Our characters were just normal humans riding the new Cosmic Dragon Dash roller coaster at Six Flags in Los Angeles on a warm Summer day. But there was a mechanical malfunction and they all tumbled to the ground, suffering fatal injuries. Soon they found themselves floating as ghosts in the Emergency Room, realizing they had all died within a few minutes of each other. They watched helplessly as their families mourned their passing, but before they could fully understand their situation, a portal opened up and pulled them in like a vacuum, flinging them though a tunnel of rainbow lights to a distant fantasy world.

Upon arrival, they gained new bodies reminiscent of their old selves, but altered slightly to exhibit physical characteristics of D&D-type races, such as elves, dwarves, gnomes, orcs, etc. Stranger still, the magic of this new land granted them capabilities far beyond anything they had experienced on Earth. Was it some form of afterlife, or were they actually reborn on a new planet? The search for answers would take them far and wide on a quest of epic proportions...

This RP is partially inspired by both Critical Role and the impending release of Baldur's Gate III, but the fantasy world will be one of my own creation. We will use some aspects of the D&D tabletop game, but what we take will be heavily modified to work for play-by-post roleplays here in the forums. Whenever the main thread is up, I'll include a link to a dice roller, but for simplicity's sake, we'll each just roll a single d20 at the start of each Combat Scenario to gauge an overall success rate of each character in the battle and then write out the scenes accordingly.

To keep it simple and roles defined, I'll make a list a character archetypes that people can then claim. We'll still monitor progression from Level 1 to Level 20, with Level-Ups happening at major story points spread out over the course of the adventure. We won't use health points or numbered stats, however, relying instead on that d20 at the beginning of each Combat Scenario to determine how the characters perform in the battle and how injured they are during/after it. The Levels will primarily exist to determine how many Abilities, Spells, & Proficiencies your character has.

For instance, if you roll a 1, you should write your character's scene accordingly, having them mess up, get their ass handed to them, and maybe break a few bones or suffer grievous wounds. You will then roll a second d20 at the end of the encounter and if that one is a 1 as well, your character succumbs to their injuries, falls unconscious, and will suffer True Death if not healed quickly. Or if you roll a 20, your character is a total badass in that Combat Scenario. More info on that later if there is enough interest.

I was going to list character archetypes here, but I decided to instead wait and see what types of characters people want to play and then work with that. If you're new to D&D, here's one of the Critical Role animated openings to give you an idea of the types of characters that exist:

@CaptainManbeard Oh! While I'm thinking about it...

I was thinking for my character, would it be possible for me to play a Genie (Djinni) Warlock?

@Guardian Angel Haruki

It was so awesome seeing Bells Hells back together XD. Plus there was a... "certain moment" when the Twitch chat was absolutely loosing it, myself included XD.

And a Genie Warlock whose patron is an Air Djinni does sound pretty cool, but we need to find a way to make most possible classes work with our shared origin story. So, I'm thinking when our characters wake up in their new bodies, they each have some kind of amulet or trinket that acts sort of like a Jedi Holocron and has all the knowledge of their class that they gradually unlock. In the case of your character and other Warlocks, the items could be the connection to the entity that becomes their patron.

I'm thinking after arriving on the new world, they each find themselves laying on runic spell circles on the floor of a giant cave with an opening to the sky from which their souls entered. They each find their item next to them, which we'll just call Soul Conduits. For a Warlock, it might be a weapon or trinket, for a Wizard, it might be a grimoire or a staff, for a bard it might be a lute, etc.

I know, right?! The reunion was both hilarious and a huge relief. I am impressed with Aabria/Deanna with her final question during Commune.

As for working in the Genie Warlock into the intro, the item granting knowledge aspect works perfectly!

According to the rules/flavor text, genie warlocks use genie vessels for their spellcasting focus. So maybe my character’s item would be a lamp, or a bottle, or a ring with an empty compartment?

Sure! I was thinking about reasons for their items to be there, and while I want it to be vague at first, there can be a little known up front. So, I'm thinking they are greeted by an elderly wizard who explains their Soul Conduits used to belong to powerful figures throughout history, and he was hired by a mysterious group to collect them and summon souls to bond with each one. They try to question the wizard about the mysterious group, but he just says he did his part and teleports away.

I only started my first DnD campaign not that long ago. It’s Disney themed! (Hi @Guardian Angel Haruki) But I’m usually in most of your RPs so why not.

I’ll be a Fairy. Because that’s an option in DnD.

Showing interest!

I've played a lot of 5e and Pathfinder (but not for a while now) DMing a lot of that time but also being a player too.

I haven't watched Critical Roll though lmao

Regardless I think this will be fun ^ ^

I may do an artificer inspired character. Always drawn to that.

Hey there! XD Welcome to another D&D game.
Which class are you thinking?

@CaptainManbeard To add onto my character a bit, I do have a personality and a bit of her background for her previous life figured out.

For now, I am thinking that with her class being a Genie (Djinni) Warlock, I'm thinking that she would be reincarnated either as a Human or an Elf.

Great ideas, everyone! I'm thinking the old wizard also collected small samples of bone, hair, or tissue from the corpses of the Soul Conduits' previous owners to use as a genetic basis for growing new bodies. The new bodies are then shaped in the images of the souls they are formed around but still retain the traits of the race of the corpse the DNA was pulled from (the D&D races).

To further specify on the body thing, it would be like the characters in their original form looked into a mirror and thought, "What would I look like as an elf? A gnome? A dwarf?" and so on. They will still mostly recognize themselves if they look in a mirror, but they'll notice the physical traits of their new fantasy race mixed with their own, such as pointed ears or green skin or changes in height and body mass.

Thanks for showing interest XD.

Also, just so everyone knows, I don't think I'm going to create a world map or anything - at least not at first. Since our characters will be new to this world, I will present info as they discover it. I will include visual references as we go though, and will probably throw in lots of images that I create in Dungeon Alchemist. As for character images, we could probably use actors as faceclaims and then create the fantasy version of their appearance in Hero Forge or something. For example, here's a party of characters I created in Hero Forge for a different project:

From left to right, they are: Pineapple Jojo, bard and captain of the Jade Jolly airship; Tamalasha Esleone, the first female Justice Knight; Darbin Crest, lost heir of the Volox Imperium; Taurik Eiberdoss, former Imperial Battlemage; and Taurik's apprentice, Celena K'caelnu.

Also, here are some images for a different character I had created - Kamran Qaarn - in different poses:

@CaptainManbeard Would it be okay if I just used HeroForge to create my character’s appearance and disregard the actor faceclaim?

I've got a piece of art I'd prefer to use over a face claim or hero forge. I'd either be human or half elf so I don't think my character's face would change much.
