The last post I wrote had the captain on his way to rock bottom. His lady friend just ended things with him in a pretty explosive manner, and he’s just spent the night gambling and partaking in other pleasures in a tiki-themed brothel to try to lift his spirits. Unfortunately, he still needed to take care of business, namely, getting a new mule since the last had been abandoned in a quick get away.

Here, the captain is flat on his back in the street having paid through the ass for a new mule that barely runs because he mentioned to the mechanic that he’d just met the man’s sister at the whore house.

Any critiques are welcome. I tried to get through this image as quickly as possible through assembling lots and lots of pre-made (pre-paid) assets (thanks Ian Hubert). It was more about story telling for me with this one. I’m sure none if the above comes through in this shot, but it was fun to make. Thanks for reading.

All done in Blender from modeling to comp.

Messing around with some 3d art converted to 2d with grease pencil. This is a Halloween theme that satisfies my love for coffee.

This is an early shot of the viewport in Blender, but I modeled all of it from scratch.

A variation:

I made an icon for getsol.us just for fun because my favorite Linux distribution is rebasing onto Serpent OS and becoming an immutable desktop. serpentos.com

@wanderingwolf Gorgeous, I wish I found blender a little more intuitive!

@penny Thank you!

It definitely took some getting used to the interface. Now that I'm familiar, it becomes like second nature. I'm sure it's the same in the software you use for your drawings.

I heartily recommend Blender to every artist, though. If you don't want to learn the 3D stuff at first, the 2D interface might be a little more simple. Once you get a hang of it, the Grease Pencil stuff (seen above in the Death Before Decaf image) is just drawing strokes, though I leaned heavily on 3D objects and outlined them (the skeleton arm, the stars, even the text).

Blender is not a classic drawing program, for sure, but skills from other drawing software can be applied there. I could gab about Blender for hours--days probably. Let me know if you are interested, or want maybe a simple tutorial!

@wanderingwolf

I feel like every tutorial is either: These are buttons, you can push them! or Here is how to procedurally generate your own universe from a 4-d fractal.

@penny Haha!!!

There are definitely lots of different approaches for sure! I could record something for you that would be more tailored if you had a specific question like: How do I draw a picture in Blender using the grease pencil. Or: How do I even use this thing?

With the level of effort and attention I see in your drawings, I'm sure you could learn Blender! But me, I'm biased. And also I'm addicted to the grease pencil right now.

Finished this today:

I'm messing with a NPR (non-photo realistic) toon shader here.

Some behind the scenes shots.

Worked a little more on it today with some texture painting and posing.

This is just an exercise in representing an expression. I'm not really doing any heavy lifting, and I feel guilty for that. The model is from MakeHuman. The painterly effect is from the Tragiditalist Toolbag Live Painter filter.

I'm literally just painting over the model in places that I want the color of the filter to change slightly to give a more expressionist feeling. All in all, it's therapeutic.

This is my take on a mimic from the game Dungeons and Dragons. Since it's Christmas time, I set the short animation to Jingle Bells by mad/no/mad. I used @curtisjamesholt 's setup from the Modular Workspaces addon to set the evil mood for this mimic. The textures were adaptations from @Felicia_White !

Almost all the deformation for this animation was done with a lattice; the rest was done using the AnimAll for the curves, which comes with Blender by default.

Merry Christmas!

I followed a course on simple projects that have big impact and this is the result of the first video series. Had a lot of fun doing this one, and I can't wait for the other ones.
