Oh boy. Uh... Well, I can only really speculate. They didn't exactly write letters for me, thinking I would come back somehow. Kari probably felt some sort of responsibility, a need to go because that was possible. Scarlet was always the adventurous type, so I don't doubt that she wanted to see what would happen. Zelda... I think he probably just wanted to be a pioneer, since nobody else had ever done it. And I have to assume Wynter just wanted to stay with her siblings.
