Apparently Facebook bought Ocuclus Rift, those 3D immersive monitorgoggles. Thoughts? I just have one question: why'd Facebook buy it?

Facebook bought it so they could invest their massive capital in an effort to generate greater revenue. Good if you wanted a cheaper, better Occulus; bad if you wanted one that didn't come with popups and spy on you.

They recognise the potential in the product? Most likely they'll try to link it to social media, but we can hope they don't want to mix it in and are just investing in something that already has huge hype and will make a fucktonneandahalf of money.
Oh, who am I kidding, ads and social media tie-ins everywhere. To keep their media relevant they have to establish themselves as part of every new advance in technology, and this is a new one - the first step to virtual reality.

Purchasing the company (and/or the product) doesn't necessarily mean they're bringing it fully under the Facebook system, I guess. But you'd have to expect they're gonna want a little 'link activity to my facebook account' button. The long and short of it is, Occulus Rift is going to make money, period, and Facebook wants that money. Now, they're firmly invested in 'not ruining the Occulus Rift,' so at the end of the day, I really doubt they're going to flood it with unwanted social bullshit. That wouldn't make sense to do -- hurting both the 'facebook' side with bad press, and the Occulus side with annoying popups. Companies don't make money by making bad decisions..... but, we'll see. I'm pretty sure it's gonna be fine though, in the end.
