Tales of Brilliance

The world of Glazend flourishes in a false peace, as the world’s largest continent Sephira is home to three nations who are silently vying for control of the land. Tensions are rising every day as ancient treaties are callously broken and people go missing. The nations build their armies to prepare for the inevitable clash, with only one country certain to be the victor. Each country is researching different methods of utilizing thaumaturgy into military weapons and barriers, racing against time and their enemies to develop the greatest magitechnology.

The three nations divide Sephira into three equal parts. The southern country is Sord, an oriental steampunk nation that uses steam-powered technology that has since been phased out in the other nations. The central and most influential country is Zenterr, brimming with European influences and a prospering economy thanks to the royal family investing in magitechnology research at the Sect of Maxwell. As such, the Sect’s main headquarters is situated in Zenterr, with its branch houses spread across the continent. The northernmost country is Boreas, and it is riddled with internal strife and conflict due to rampant discrimination and obsession with thaumaturgy. Boreas is the most obvious threat to peace because it has actively used its citizens in awful experiments in the past, plus its magitechnology is said to be greater than Zenterr’s. Its leaders are a council of Elves who believe they are the superior race above all and treat the other races as inferiors. In the past, Zenterr and Sord had to cooperate to quell Boreas’ activities before things got worse, and provide sanctuary for those affected by Boreas’ tyrannical rule. There are whispered rumors that either Zenterr or Sord is actually working with Boreas to create new magitechnology, but nothing has been proven.

Glazend’s citizens all have one thing in common though… or rather two – everyone has gone through the Blessing of Elements to be granted two of ten possible magic glyphs called Thauma (pl. Thaumae), named after the branch of science that studies them; thaumaturgy. Those who specialize in the research are called thaumaturges, and they all belong to the Sect of Maxwell (named after the king of elements). While these sorcerers are in high demand across the three nations, the Sect of Maxwell heavily regulates where thaumaturges are deployed. They’re also very creepy to be around, as they dress in plague doctor outfits like this one.

Regardless, everyone can use two Thauma based upon the rituals that thaumaturges perform on children to determine their strongest elemental affinities. From there, the children go to temples and are granted their respective elemental Thauma by a priest or thaumaturge who are part of the Sect. The ritual has become so common that no one has questioned when it came to be or why. Rich or poor, male or female, regardless of race, everyone is able to use two Thaumae. The ten Thaumae known to the world are the following:

1. Undine Thauma – Water element that can specialize in offensive and long-range healing spells
2. Efreet Thauma – Fire element that is excellent for offensive skills
3. Sylph Thauma – Wind element that allows for quick movement
4. Gnome Thauma – Earth element granting the user a higher level of defense
5. Celsius Thauma – Ice element that functions as the offensive form of water, plus causes the target to either freeze or have their body temperature lower
6. Volt Thauma – Lightning element that shocks the opponent and can cause paralysis
7. Rem Thauma – Holy element that’s mainly used in magic, not so much for fighting
8. Shadow Thauma – Darkness element, the polar opposite to Rem
9. Martel Thauma – Nature element that is closely related to Gnome, but makes use of plants and trees
10. Lorelei Thauma – Sound element that allows users to access a special branch of magic called Fonic Hymns, utilizing short songs to cast mystifying spells rather than using spoken incantations

These ten elements can be combined to allow people a wider range of elemental control for everyday practical usage, combat, or military purposes. For instance, an Undine + Rem user will be an excellent healer, while Sylph + Volt users are very swift and agile. The most unusual combinations are called elemental clashes because they cancel each other out by nature, thus not benefitting the user in any way. The following five are considered elemental clashes:

Undine + Volt (water vs. lightning)
Efreet + Celsius (fire vs. ice)
Sylph + Gnone (wind vs. earth)
Rem + Shadow (light vs. darkness)
Martel + Lorelei (tangible vs. intangible / existence vs. concept)

It is impossible for more than two Thaumae to exist on a person at any time. Any more than that, and elemental discord will occur and kill the user. This is known as Thauma Branding because it involves ‘branding’ a victim with a third Thauma. However there has been forbidden research in that area, along with research into the darkest realms of thaumaturgy in order to prepare for the upcoming war. Such subjects include weapons of mass destruction, immortality, time travel, replication, achieving godhood, and even creating new Thaumae. Sord’s people are demanding for technological advances. Boreas continues to plunge into the realm of black magic and sacrifice everyone’s lives for it. Zenterr is stuck in the middle trying to keep the peace while bolstering its defenses. It won’t be long before this fragile peace gives way to a potential outbreak of mayhem and blood.

CHARACTER SHEET

For the Race category, there are six available to choose, although the last two are extremely rare in the regular series:

Human – Standard homo sapiens that are flexible at learning magic or fighting skills, but not both. They have the highest population on Glazend, but normally live up to around 80 years.
Elf – People with long pointy ears. They are very talented with magic and thaumaturgy, and have much longer lifespans than any of the other races. Elves in Boreas believe they are the strongest race and will persecute anyone and everyone, including fellow elves, half-elves and dark elves.
Half-Elf – Folks born between a Human and an Elf. They’re often persecuted by both sides and are often on the run. Many belong to the Sect of Maxwell because it doesn’t discriminate against race; it will accept anyone as long as they have skill. Half-elves are said to live up to 1000 years, but not many do because of the manhunts against them.
Dark Elf – A manmade race created by fusing captured Half-Elves with dragon’s blood; they’re the result of the unethical Dragon Blood Project in Boreas to see whether or not mortals can wield the godly power of dragons and then be turned into brainwashed soldiers. As a result, their skin turned darker and the sclera of their eyes turned black, but otherwise they retained normal elven features. Dark Elves are treated even worse than Half-Elves because they’re seen as either slaves or rejected test subjects that need to be eliminated. Even Zenterr and Sord are a little leery of Dark Elves, but still provide a safe haven for them.
This race is to remain extremely limited! As we already have 3 Dark Elves for the story, I will be extremely strict about adding any further Dark Elves. I want most of them to have been killed by Boreas and Sect exterminators, and the ones we're playing are the rare survivors.
Dwarves – Perhaps the rarest race on Glazend, Dwarves are short-statured and talented craftsmen who don’t involve themselves with world affairs beyond crafting tools and weapons.
Dwarf-Elf – As one has never been seen, it’s not known what Dwarf-Elves are like.

RULES

1. You may use a character from an existing Tales series (from Phantasia all the way to Xillia 2 – we’ll leave Zestiria alone until it is released). However, they will need to be equipped with at least one Thauma that best suits their existing skill range, i.e. Kohak with fire, Veigue with ice, Tear with music, etc. If they are mages that normally use a wide array of elemental spells, obviously many of those artes will need to be cut. And yes, spoilers will be inevitable.
2. Likewise you may create an OC and start them off with a short list of base artes or first-tier spells. Your character’s skill list will expand as the story goes on. If you don’t know what base artes or spells to use, please look here for more.
3. You don’t need to know the Tales series like the back of your hand. This will be a fantasy setting with heavy emphasis on elements, of course. The Tales Wiki has plenty of information about the games’ lore if you wish to research more about it.

OOC's up now for those interested. I will be busy tomorrow, so I won't be able to make my own CS until Saturday. Originally I was going to make an Efreet + Gnome user, but I've switched to Efreet + Lorelei.

Name: Cyreth
Age: 25
Appearance:
Birthplace: Zenterr
Personality: Quiet and reserved, Millia is a very farouche adventurer. Constantly haunted by her memories of experimenation, as well as the abuse and discrimination she faces in the streets during her daily life, she's very untrusting and wary of humans and even somewhat of elves. However distrusting she may be, however, she also can be extremely loyal to those she deems as friends or those who at least show her kindness. She often goes out of her way to defend or stand up for those who've shown her kindness as well, acting as a sort of vigilante to an extent, trying her best not to fall to her hatred of the people who did terrible things to her.
Race: Dark Elf
Canon or OC: OC
Weapon: Sword and Shield
Thauma #1: Gnome
Thauma #2: Celsius
Base Artes/Spells: Rock Trine, Ice Wall
Bio: Millia was born as an average elf, in Zenterr, where she grew up alongside her kind and humans both, having a rather average childhood. That is, until she was kidnapped at age 12 by a group of mysterious men. Brought to a labratory in an unknown location in Boreas, she was subject to terrible, inhumane experiments involving infusing her, along with many other Elves, with dragon's blood. Or at least, attempted to.

Regardless, she eventually managed to escape... but not before being tainted by the experiments, permantently altering her appearance like a scar, permanently reminding her of what she was now. As she slowly made her way back to Zenterr over the years, she also managed to pick up skills, items and even some money on the way, becoming somewhat experienced in the use of weaponry, specifically a combination of sword and shield.
Of course, if anything needs to be changed, I'll gladly add or remove anything to make it more acceptable! I'm not terribly experienced with the Tales series, but I've played a few of them.

I think the only thing that needs changing is her name. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, but if someone wanted to RP as Milla Maxwell from Xillia, I'm concerned that the two very similar names are potentially going to cause a lot of confusion. That's a very big if, but you never know.

My character will be similar to Luke from Abyss and Asbel from Graces and Graces f
Name: Lucas "Luke" Flamberg

Age: 21

Appearance:

Birthplace: Zenterr

Personality: Lucas is a kind young man who is often seen helping the people of Zenterr in need. His inquisitive personality usually gets him in trouble with the wrong people, but his combat prowess helps get himself out of those situations. He cares a lot about his friends and would almost always consider giving his own life to save those close to him.

Race: Human

Canon or OC: OC

Weapon: Blade and Sheath

Thauma #1: Efreet

Thauma #2: Volt

Base Artes/Spells: Demon Fist (Majinken!) Fang Blade Lightning Tiger Blade (Fang Blade empowered with Volt Thauma) Devil's Inferno

Bio: Lucas grew up in a small village on the outskirts of Zenterr where he was raised by only his mother and was given his Thaumae by the local priests. He lived a happy life, getting good grades in school and making friends. He didn't know much about his father, but he sometimes came to the village to teach his son how to protect himself. His father was a high ranking military officer who worked to protect the Sect of Maxwell (I'll call is SoM) and it's secrets. However, his father had gotten too close to what the SoM was trying to keep undercover and was branded a traitor to the military in order to keep their secrets away from the citizens of Zenterr. His father had fled back to the village to the woman and child that he loved so dear, to show them affection for the last time before he was slain by the government, but the SoM had sent the local military to raid the village for his head. Surrounded in flame and soaked with tears, Lucas sat in front of the two lifeless bodies that were his parents remembering the last thing his father told him. "Don't trust the government. Find the Truth." Lucas survived the purge of his village and moved into the capital of Zenterr where he became a military knight, the ones who had killed his family and friends, in order to find the "Truth" that his father wanted him to find.

@ neko-sama: I would prefer to keep the population of Dark Elves to a minimum since most of them have been slain by the Sect and Boreas to hide the secret. Playing as a Half-Elf would be helpful since they're more common and they're still subject to abuse. I know I'll sound like a hypocrite since my OC will be a Dark Elf, but I just don't want this RP overpopulated with Dark Elves just because the history behind them is so dark and compelling. Half-Elves suffer the same discrimination and experimentation as Dark Elves; they just don't have dragon's blood infused into them.

@ Darkrougenin: Accepted.

This has my attention. If I might ask, which of these four characters seem most plausible for Brilliance, and so which one should I pursue?

#1 - Animated suit of armor, origin unknown at the moment, dialogue consisting mostly of grunts (though he can speak and will), wields a hefty, intimidating claymore, surrounded in cold air and possesses limited mastery over shadow. Is hella tall when standing up, and he is (most likely) human. Or, was...
#2 - Old researcher, hails from Sord (may be government or private sector), prioritizes his own set of agendas over himself and others (to an extent; he's still a moral man, but...), still dresses in his old, formal attire for a number of reasons; one being that people can find him easier. Human magic-user and face-puncher.
#3 - This guy is an oddball. His appearance and choice of weapon will scream "Villain!" due to an incident in the past, but he's actually a really sweet and doggedly nice human guy outside of battle, and he's not much different in battle either, only switching to a victory-based mindset with a tendency to jump in the line of fire for others.
#4 - Human knight of Zenterr, granted autonomy by an unknown-as-of-yet direct superior; he's investigating something at the time the story begins. Slightly sociopathic personality, but is focused on upholding his given duty. Wields a pole-arm, and showcases extreme disciplined skill in combat, to make up for his clashing elements.

I'll await your response. I've always secretly wanted to see how a "Tales of" story would grow...

Well, if someone else came along and wanted to be a Dark Elf, and then I said no after accepting yours, I'm going to have problems. But if you're absolutely insistent on being a Dark Elf, then I can let it slide. But I need to update the first post with this info since I don't want Dark Elves overpopulating this RP. I know the history behind them is interesting and compelling, but let's get real here. I want a variety of races, not just Dark Elves.

This has my attention. If I might ask, which of these four characters seem most plausible for Brilliance, and so which one should I pursue?

You're welcome. I was quite reluctant there, but as long as we don't have a ridiculous influx of Dark Elves, you should be OK.

Speaking of which, time to introduce mine.

Name: Melvin
Age: 23
Appearance: Old image of him here
Birthplace: Boreas
Personality: Melvin is as hot-blooded as they come. He doesn’t think things through rationally, preferring to act on raw instinct and emotion rather than what’s logical and ‘right’. This also makes him charismatic and courageous, taking the hits for others and accepting blame for anything he feels he’s truly responsible for. He has an incredibly strong will to survive, and nothing will get in his way. Melvin possesses extreme hatred for Boreas and the Sect of Maxwell due to the experiments they did to him, and has been trying to rally others into staging an uprising against them. He wants to expose the horrible truth of the Sect to the world, hoping to overturn the Thauma system and throw them out of power. Despite his overbearing masculinity, Melvin hates alcohol due to personal reasons.
Race: Dark Elf
Canon or OC: OC
Weapon: twin axes
Thauma #1: Efreet
Thauma #2: Lorelei
Base Artes: Tiger Blade, Tempest, Beast, Hell Pyre, Burning Wheel
Bio: Melvin started life as a Half-Elf, and right from the start he’s had it rough. He was sold to the Sect’s thaumaturges in Boreas by his alcoholic Human father to get enough money for a day’s worth of liquor. Melvin was one of the first subjects in the Dragon Blood Project, and also one of the most successful. His appearance had radically changed, and he felt like an alien in his own body. The thaumaturges then tried to use different Thaumae to try and control his mind, but Melvin’s willpower was too strong for them.

Then an Elven traitor to the Boreas High Council – Duke Larcen Serizawa – marched into the place and single-handedly destroyed the facility in one night. He rescued many survivors of the Sect’s research, including Melvin, and burned documents relating to forbidden subjects. This greatly damaged the Sect’s stronghold in Boreas for a short while, allowing the captives to escape south to Zenterr or Sord where Boreas’ political power couldn’t reach.

Larcen’s strength and actions inspired Melvin to pursue the same path, although he never did ask why the Duke was destroying the Sect’s research. At first he assumed that Larcen was rebelling against the council, but then he disappeared and the Sect regained its footing in Boreas. Larcen hasn’t been seen since, so it’s left many unanswered questions in Melvin’s mind – is Larcen trying to save people, or is there something else? Despite this, Melvin continues to build a resistance force of his own in Sord and southern Zenterr in the hopes of finding the truth, thereby crushing Boreas and the Sect for good.

Name: Lumen

Age: 21

Birthplace: Boreas

Personality: Systematic, confident, curious, composed, sarcastic, and sometimes generous.

Race: Elf

Canon or OC: OC

If Canon, which game: N/A

Weapon: Wooden staff

Thauma #1: Lorelei

Thauma #2: Undine

Base Artes/Spells:

Bio: Born to strict parents and always under the watchful eyes of other Elves she learned discipline at a young age, respect, and to follow the teaching of the Elders. Lumen’s younger years were nothing particularly special though her kind was well off compared to other races in Boreas no doubt. Time was often spent anxiously awaiting the practice of Thauma, which could not have come soon enough. Both parents scurried with her to begin the ritual. Elven heritage traits were a plus during this time as she possesses a natural knack for spells unlike some others who were a bit clumsy during the first few months of practice. Much like the Elves who obsess over experimentation Lumen obsessed over learning to hopefully someday master her abilities. This dream came before family and drove a wedge between friends, which altogether isolated her. Not minding one bit however as her once pure ambitions turned to pompous and dangerous endeavors to become powerful.

For some reason Lumen’s parents began to question the Elves plan with thaumaturgy and magitechnology, which immediately placed a red flag on their family. At the age of 19 Lumen became engaged to a rather well to do Elf who knew a thing or two about Boreas’ direction but kept any information under lock and key—so to speak. While little did she know that her family planned to place matters into their own hands. With the hope of coming to a peaceful compromise they sought the Elven council and were not heard from again. Word spread like wild fire about her family’s traitorous views and her fiancé was none the happier about wedding a conspirator, and she fled in fear of being torn asunder knowing that’s exactly what they’d do to her.

Lumen’s beliefs have now been shaken to the core with banishing herself to the border of Boreas. Lumen eventually met up with exiled elves and half-elves alike who gradually became like family. In the beginning she still contained the characteristics of a typical pretentious Elf and held her nose high above everyone else. Time soon calmed her cruel heart a bit and with eyes wide open Lumen currently sees the ostracism of half-elves and the damage her pure-blood heritage has bestowed upon the land. She utilizes supportive spells the most in hopes of aiding fellow adventures who share a similar view. Now aiming to somehow try and put a stop to this madness though the world continues to spiral in a deepening darkness. Lumen sometimes fears she will inevitably become swallowed up by it all as well.
Sorry, made an elf...had a picture I was dying to use.

Hope it’s ok that I didn't indulge further in the personality department. I think that you guys will come to understand her better as I rp her since she’ll react differently to everyone/thing.

& I adored Tales of Xillia and am currently playing tales of Symphonia & Symphonia Dawn of the New World. ^^
