Ideally, you wouldn't have to shoot at all. I'd rather be able to hear clearly leading up to a potential confrontation. Most people, I imagine, rather not argue at gunpoint.

True true and I guess if I did put them on, the jury could be like "Well he was obviously out for BLOOD!"

I know. That is one thing I'm not a fan of.Who even are you, Kagarood?

You're not a fan of the fact that whole families don't own guns in Canada? :s

At least in Eastern Canada. Like Dervish said, it is way more common out West.

More like 5 per person, but yeah... we got guns. Our daughters got guns, just because.

So pretty much, this happened but with less actual shooting.

Anyhoo.. closest moment I had to being shot was turning-in from a day of clearing a scout-camp in a hastily-repurposed hunting-shack... never bothered to check for guns... one of the younger scouts found one laying next to his bunk, a loaded .22 lever-action... Aimed it straight for a scout's head and pulled the trigger... the remmington Thunderbolt cartridge misfired... probably the only time I've seen it do so... then he re-cocked and drew a bead on me, still thinking it was a toy, and that the cartridges were batteries.

Years later, the scout that was in front of me went through Army Ranger school, I'm deaf and blind on the left side.

That's... actually a pretty reasonable point I didn't consider. It could be argued that if you took the time to put on hearing protection, you had the intention to shoot, regardless. Interesting.

A close call is the exact same thing as absolutely nothing having happened at all. You'll be fine.

I feel its a very slippery slope
If you weren't planning on shooting the intruder why did you load the gun?
You where very quick to grab you gun before knowing if you where being robbed. It could have just been a family member, maybe you hoped someone was robbing you?
So the man was downstairs yet you decided to walk down them, could you not have waited upstairs for the police to arrive?
All questions that make no sense but hope you slip up on....
Yeah it sucks and can really depend on how the laws in the country/state you are in.
In the UK the policy is to apply "Reasonable force" meaning you should give the same amount as they give.
The problem with this is what is deemed reasonable force? A big drugged up guy could probably kill me with his bare hands. If he attempts to attack me can I defend myself with a gun? Or is him not having a weapon meaning I act unlawfully?
Very slippy....
Luckily I live in a ok area with a bunch of grannies but it isn't a bad thing to be prepared.

That's because Canadians tend not to get worked up about firearms in the way Americans do, despite there's enough firearms in Canada to arm 1/3 of the population. Out here in central Alberta, if you tell someone you own a gun is like saying you own a car or a power drill. It really isn't a big deal. That said, if I ever have a reason to, I have no problems loading a rifle if I have a legitimate concern about my safety or my property.

That being said you don't usually keep it in your room, and it's more likely to be used for shooting unsavoury animals (like coyotes or porcupines) than self defense.

Rifles are all over the place here, but people really only use them for hunting. The biggest kind of tourism here is people coming up to hunt.

Yeah, but if you're 16, owning a car, and being able to take it out on saturday afternoons and drift around on the ice with it... or enroll in competitive drag-races with it... is a pretty big deal...

Heck, even if you're 43 and going through a midlife-crisis... getting top-score in a certain lumberjack-ing competition is probably worth bragging aboot, don'tcha-know.

edit: and there's nothing quite like playing a good clean game of 'chicken' with a pair of loaded shotguns.

If you're 16, you're still not an adult and have a long life ahead of you, ideally.

I mean, when you can't vote, buy booze, have your full driver's license, or own a gun, I think it's pretty safe to say you aren't indicative of the majority of the population.

Also, if any kid has a car at 16, they either A) have no plans of going to college or university, B) have rich parents, C) Were gifted a hand-me-down from a relative, or D) no concept of money if they plan on doing more than own that car.

Back in Ontario, you can't drive on your own until you get your G2 license, which still limits when you're allowed to be on the road, how many people you can have in the car, and access on certain highways (unless they changed all that in the past 3 years or whatever).

It's not until you get your full license that you're really free to do whatever you want. So, whenever I saw a kid in high school who had a car, I wasn't really impressed. I thought they had poor decision making skills, which for the most part came out being true.

Well, actually they kinda could, and to an extent, still can via loopholes the size of sperm-whales.

-Minimum age in local elections in America are not covered by the 26th amendment, just that it can be NO GREATER than 18 years. In theory, you can legally vote by age 3 in some states.
-Booze can still be consumed via strawman-purchase by the person's legal gaurdian. And the person may reimburse the gaurdian for said costs.
-Actually, it's a 6-month probate period, and you can start that at 15 years old because the graduated driver's licensing scheme fell-through in a few states
**Racing/commercial-occupational driving can be accomplished by age 6. My mother drove a tanker truck that age, her twin-brother operated the pedals... Forklift certification is even more hilarious.
-As for firearms, yeah, you can buy a gun and start hunting as young as eight without an adult immediately-presesnt (just need line-of-sight).

...

I,,, may have had a slightly different upbringing than the rest of you... Since I was already offloading semitrailers by age five.

Remember kids, America is the home of Audie Murphy.

Hmm. . . Maybe if you got some money to spare you could try a motel. (If you don't have access to a friend's house I GUESS. I'm not Merlin the Wise.)

If you noticed, the household is armed.

Motels are just as likely to have robberies, shootings, and meth cooks there.

Oh, and sheets with massive period blood stains.
