CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW PLAYERS
Wanted jobs:
1. Engineers
2. Tactical officers
3. Exploration officers
Earth has been destroyed by a vastly powerful alien race known as the Necroids (They are similar in nature to the borg or the War of the Worlds martians).
However, humans managed to evacuate and colonized another star system: The Odin System.
Now, 300 years later, human civilization is finally starting to rebuild. Space has turned into a frontier, similar to the American wild west.
However, human civilization is on the verge of civil war, as anarchist insurgent groups begin to predate at will and spread chaos and lawlessness where they please.
To make matters worse, there are rumors of Necroid scouting ships being spotted on the edge of the Odin System.
Our characters are crew members aboard the USS Gabriel, a starship designed with many purposes in mind, but chief of which is exploration. By exploring the system, the Gabriel will find resources and trading partners for their corporate sponsers.
Our ship:
Some ideas for occupations:
Pilot: Fly a cool starfighter that comes out of our ship. Great for scouting and ship-to-ship combat. Or you can be a 'ground pilot', who drives land vehicles on away missions. Example: Starbuck, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker (to some extent).
Tactical Officer: Tactical officers control various functions on the ship, such as the shields, teleporters, guns, and tractor beams.
Exploration Officers: Go down to strange new worlds and seek out new life. This often involves beaming down onto planets and searching for artifacts or collecting samples of alien organisms. They often carry energy weapons as opposed to firearms. Examples would include Samus Aran and pretty much the entire cast of Star Trek that goes on away missions.
Engineering: As you know, things break. As such, somebody has to maintain, fix, and build machines on board the ship, otherwise, things break. Example: Geordi La Forge
Programmer: One who programs. They have various functions, such as hacking and sabotaging enemy machines, and programming electronic systems.
Security Officers: They operate as police and paramilitary ground units. In contrast to Exploration Officers, Security Officers usually use firearms rather than energy weapons. When something needs to be arrested or killed, Security Officers are who to call. Example: Commander Shepard
Medics: Healing people, as a good doctor should. Really, what would a space opera be without their doctor?
____
Races:
Humans: Homo Sapiens. Humans are not native to the Odin System, so they truly have no home planet. They are relatively weak physically, but they are the second most advanced species known to mankind (The Necroids are vastly more advanced than humanity, but aside from them, Humanity is easily the most advanced). Humans are also 'socially dominant' in many regards. The current government was set up by humans, and all major corporations are owned by humans. Most human colonies are no larger than the state of georgia.
Aliens:
Aliens are the sapient species native to the Odin System. None of them ever invented anything more advanced than gunpowder, so once human colonies came, they were basically helpless. Luckily, human colonists were largely non-malicious in their take-over. They purchased any land or resources they wanted, and even offered citizenship to the native aliens. At the federal level, they have the same rights as anybody else, but smaller governments (city and occasionally planetary governments) tend to pass laws that render them second-class citizens. In most places they can't vote or run for office, for example.
Androids: Advanced AIs. They are a very new invention, one that's sparked a lot of controversy. Currently, they have it even worse than the Aliens. Legally speaking, they are only property, and have no rights whatsoever. However, there are attempts by the government to extend rights to them, but they've all been shot down.

-Equipment/Weapons: (For an engineer, this would be their favorite tools. Like duct tape. For a Tactical Officer, this would be the console they operate. For an Exploration or Security officer, this would be any weapons that they own) (Keep in mind that, at this point, the Gabriel is not a warship or even a police ship. So, no assault rifles, energy blades, or powered armor, at least at first. The most powerful weapon security gets to use are submachine guns)
You can have as many characters as you like, by the way.
A note on Energy Weapons:
Energy Weapons come in two varieties: Lasers, and plasma. Lasers are essentially fully-automatic and highly accurate. Plasma weapons fire a ball of plasma, which explodes upon hitting the enemy. Plasma weapons can be charged by holding down the trigger. Some of them come in gun-like forms, while many have different designs, such as arm cannons. Many of them cause some sort of side-effect to what they shoot. For example, setting the target on fire, non-lethally knocking them out, or giving them radiation poisoning. They also don't run out of ammo quite as quickly as firearms do.
