Posted. As far as NPC nations go, how will you be handling matters with them (such as diplomacy, trade and war)?

I leave it for players to decide. I just oversee things and makesure there's no blatant bias and abuse of power. At the end of the day, this an RP style nation... well, RP. I don't want it to become one of those statistic driven monsters, because frankly I think they're messy. And I don't want to dictate to everyone how their nation's history plays out. From your post, I'm 100% certain I can trust you to be sensible, and I'm sure others will be the same.

Like I say, I'm just the overseer. Play realisticly and no one gets a volcano cropping up in their capital city.

EDIT: "- NPC provinces will be up for joint control of all players, however I reserve the right to wade in if I feel you're exploiting this power." is what I put under the Core Rules section.

It has been a while since I have RP'd. I hope mine was alright?

Edit: Also, how would I know if my ships sank during the voyage if I am also to control the NPC provinces in a whole length of post? D;

Would I not have skipped the sinking part if I jumped straight into having the NPC province respond to my actions?

If we want, can we have you decide what happens?

^ I agree on that, since I am sure we would not choose to have any enemies at the early stages, no one would have their aggressive neighbors wage open war.

Perhaps you can leave them dormant until they are engaged by the players or if you feel that it's time they made a move?

If your ships sink, that's upto you. The rules I've laid down are advisory based. If you start voyaging all over the region, from one place to the next over and over, without encountering turbulance then I step in and say "Hey, look, there's a huge tidal wave UH OH".

Okay, okay, let me try and explain this from another direction. This is an RP, like when you have characters walking about. In an RP, you come across NPCs, right? And sometimes, more often than not, you and the other players manipulate this NPC's actions - unless the GM assumes direct control of them. That's what this is. You have an NPC neighbour? What happens between you and them is your story to tell.

I mean, when I used to play nation RPs waaaaaaaaaaaay back when Blizzforums was an RP power house (and I was still in school), this is generally how they played out. People had a country, and did what they wanted, unless it became unreasonable or upset other players.

HOWEVER,

If this is going to cause problems, and you guys feel you need my input to make the RP more 'game-like', this is fine. I've been asking for advice and suggestions during the whole creation process of this, and recieved very little, so I've been rolling the dice at each cross roads and running with it.

We better come to a consenus on this quick though, before things start getting tangled.

I enjoy the fact you are leaving it to the players - I think you should step in when someone starts being too OP with their RP, but I trust your judgement in that regard.

Blizzforums? Do you mean the World of Warcraft Roleplay Forums, back when they were huge? ...Did we roleplay together?

Anyway, I'm cool with this staying as it is OR being more gamey. I've played both sorts of games, and there are advantages to each. However, my very favorite game of this sort was a deity game on the Giant in the Playgrounds Forums that was mostly freeform with a few rough "This is what you can do each turn" limits.

I'm just waiting before concluding my actions. I already have an idea for how negotiations will go with the NPC nation north of me, and in the same post I'll probably write about emissaries asking to gain passage into the player-owned provinces. But I have to wait, since it feels way too soon for me to do that.

That's the current system in play. I'm a reasonable fellow, I will be a fair judge and jury. You have the benefit of me being a decent GM who reads every post in detail and I even go so far as to crack out my note pad to write down things that I need to keep an eye on.

I don't think they were the same thing, Blizzforums was related to Blizzard, but I think it was a fan forum. I used to be Rokdar Ironvein, and I had my hand in many pies (forums), so you may have seen me around.

I thought about a turn based system, maybe it'd of been best. I don't know. The way you're doing things is pretty much what I'm used to.

I think the best thing to do is to keep it how it is for now. If problems arise from the way the RP functions, then I will act quickly to modify the existing system. This topic is very much live however, so anyone may feel free to keep throwing ideas or concerns at me.

Posted, although it might have turned out a bit more detailed and high-fantasy-ish that I would've liked.

Concerning the matter of GM intervention, SyrianHamster looks like a seasoned GM so I'll trust his judgement. Wouldn't mind some random events though.

Anyway, am off for some much needed sleep, g'night. From my timezone at least.

Random events are a green light. Drawing up a list of them.

Yeah, it's half one in the morning for us British folk, so I think I better turn in too. Laters people, keep it real and all that.

I got this event idea that I got to say. in the far future, a massive empire of tiny hamsters riding giant beast invade.

Edit: Anyone want to discuss becoming trading partners? It would help to be close.
Do I count militia's below 500 in the standing army?

Ah I get it. This will be my first rp which is a lot less gamey. Past nation RPs that I have joined were very gamey based so I was quite caught off guard.

I do not mind establishing some sort of trade pact for the time being. Also, perhaps you are able to send diplomats through open sea? Which may be risky if I would say..

Regardless, I will wait until your diplomat enters my borders.

Standing armies are the troops you always keep active, regardless of their type or quality. Over time, your country might look at updating its existing forces or expanding them. Either way, if an army comes marching across your lines, you'll naturally sound for a call to arms. Every eligible combatant will assemble at the nearest rally point, and militias will be formed. Within a couple of days your standing army could increase rapidly, but then I guess depending on how wealthy you are, the resources available and your nation's stance on training, the militias will be of varying quality and unreliable against a professional army.

If you go on to defeat the attackers, and then you launch a counter-offensive over their border with an army of 40,000 soldiers, then I will start paying attention to what you're upto. It's all well and good having those soldiers, but if met with thick resistance and you're forced to lay siege, coffers are gonna start getting hurt. Just remember, you have to pay to keep your soldiers supplied, and you have to pay for their services UNLESS you promise them the loot from the besieged city. But then, razing a city and stealing its valuables wont make the occupied population like you very much.

^^^ Just a few more of my thoughts on the subject.

Hm... I should have read your new nation history before I wrote what I did. If your nation is very aggressive, well, this could be the death of Erimir's finest merchant!

BTW, Syrian: Concerning the discussions between the Halfling delegate and King Dryadson, shall I simply make a post (tomorrow) stating what the Halflings offer and ask in a less character-oriented and more overarching manner? Or would you rather we shoot PMs at each other, perhaps, going over what the outcome of it would be and then posting that?
