[IC] The Orphanage for the Unusual

As you enter the orphanage you are handed a letter from the benefactor. The letter reads:

Welcome. This is your home until you feel you are ready to take on the world at large. Here we will educate and train you. You may pick any room you like. There is a library, a pool, and several gyms. You will be required to take classes so that you can one day hold a job and be a part of society. The important thing to remember is that you are welcome to be yourself here.

David got up from his bed. It was another sleepless night. He stretched and took a hot shower to keep himself awake. He dried off and dressed. David drank a energy drink to keep himself awake during the day. He was still tired but wanted to stay awake today. David heard the thoughts of people in the morning. He sighed rubbing his temples

It was the first time in ages since Rebecca had woken up so calm. She had almost thought it as too good to come true kind of thing, when she found this place... after all, there wasn't much options to a girl of her age, abandoned to the unknown world by herself. Of course she wouldn't survived out there. It would have been just far worse way to try to stay alive rather than to live.

It was a rather large room for just one girl. The two double floored beds signaled that it was supposed to be for four people, but there wasn't any stuff to make it look like anyone was living with her at the moment. Getting herself ready to the shower, Rebecca was still furiously thinking the classes... she didn't want to look lazy, so that would be the first thing at the morning after getting breakfast. Her thoughts were suddenly cut short in the sound of the shower tap turning on... god it had been long since she had a proper shower.

Half an hour later Rebecca was already walking downstairs to the canteen, getting herself some breakfast. Walking past a few people she already felt more homely than ever before, as she chuckled inside of her head at the sight of three guys showing off to each other with their skills. Getting to the canteen, Rebecca went for very basics, porridge and few pieces of bread with butter before going to a corner of one of the empty tables. She had some trouble approaching people casually, but hopefully the classes she was going to start at the start of next week would provide her at least few friendly faces.

The housekeeper smiled at each student as the entered. The housekeeper lookered lot like Mrs.Clause. She was portly with white hair and she always wore an apron. She made her each student had whatever the wanted to est anytime of day. She was also in charge of making sure that everyone knew the schedule of the day. Today the children would be taking a test to see what careers the talents, skills, and interest would be best suited. The benefit or wanted them all to have a career picked out before they left the orphanage.

David walked in a little late and said "Sorry everyone. I slept in today." He took a seat by Rebecca and looked at the Mrs.Clause lady. He was bored and began reading began the minds of random people. Same old thoughts. Greed, concerns, love etc. he decided to have some fun and use his telekinesis to spin the hands of the clock fast

Arabella slowly trailed down the stairs, careful to keep her hands tucked against her side to avoid touching things. Ice didn't always form when her skin touched an object but she didn't want to take any chances. The girl stepped into the cafeteria and almost ran back out again at the sight of how many people filled the room. She wasn't a social person by nature and the fact that her parents had keep her locked up for 11 years because they were ashamed for people to know what she was didn't help either. Arabella slowly inched toward the line for the food, keeping her eyes fixed firmly on her shoes as she tried to hide behind her snow white hair.

Rebecca paused for a second as she could feel someone sitting right next to her, but didn't let that stop her hunger, biting down on the other bread she had. Being on her own for a moment, she then swallowed. "Not hungry huh?" she then asked, turning her head for a second to look at this guy, before continuing to eat. Not sure what he would be doing in the cafeteria if not eating... then again, she was far from judging people, especially here. All she could know he was eating some mind food or something like that.

"Eat up children," the housekeeper said. "Today will be a busy day. The benefactor has arranged for everyone to be tested. He wants to know your strengths and weakness. You might want to give some thought into what career you want to pursue in the future. When you are done go to the computer room."

Arabella reached the line and grabbed an apple. She then walked away with just an apple, not really feeling all that hungry. She raised the apple to her lips to take a bite then gasped when she saw ice slowly spreading over the fruit. In only seconds it was completely encased in ice. Appetite not completely gone she quickly threw the apple in the trash before hurrying from the room, tears of frustration pricking at her eyes.

David looked at the girl who asked if he was hungry. He shookd his head at her. His eyes had black rings under them. He stopped seeing a girl but a apple that was now frozen. He rose a eyebrow. He then heard the mrs.Clause lady talk about the careers. He rolled his eyes. *cant get a job if I can hear everyone's thought in the damn room.*

"You will learn to block thoughts David." The housekeeper scolded. "The point of the orphanage is to give you a safe place to learn how to become a member of society. You are the future. Think of all the ways mind reading would be beneficial in the business world."

Rebecca did as told, starting to eat with bit more pushed pace. Seemed like the guy wasn't much in a mood for chat, so she just let him be, focusing on her food. It didn't take more than roughly a minute or so for her to already empty the place. Slight red going on her cheeks as she realized how vulgarly she had just taken down her breakfast, she then heard the guy next to her was a mind reader.

The immediate idea that her mind could be read anytime at this school made her brains go in slight overgear, as she was now afraid to think anything at all about anyone. She then sighed, quickly getting up from her chair with the tray. Keeping her head low, she tried to repeat the basic words of 'don't think anything stupid now' in her head, getting the tray to the pile with the rest of the dishes. She then made her way out of the kitchen too in a slight hurry...

David got up and said "Sorry lady I don't want to use my power to make some fat CEO rich." He left as he walked into the hall he laughed hearing Rebecca's thought. *icam here you love.* he walked up stairs to his room and laid down

"I meant you would be the CEO you brat!" The housekeeper said with a huff. She understood the kids need time to believe in themselves and more importantly the benefactor, but sometimes they were very frustrating. The housekeeper knew she would have to chase David down to take his test, but she would give him an hour of peace first. The benefactor was already working on a way to make David's room sanctuary where he could get way from all the voices.

Arabella walked slowly down the hall, head down. Small patches of ice formed where she stepped and she paused to take a deep breath. Conceal, don't feel. Conceal, don't feel. Conceal, don't feel. She chanted like a mantra in her mind and slowly the ice patches faded away. She let out a breath of relief and continued walking. Why was I cursed with this? I can't touch anything without destroying it. Maybe mother was right, maybe I should never had been born. She thought to herself as tears trailed slowly down her cheeks.

David heard another girl's thoughts. It was the ice queen. He thought "I love that movie. I understand how you feel. Having a power. Having no control over it. No matter how hard you try* he sighed and said to himself "seems like I have some people who are like me.."

The quick strall Rebecca made was to the bulletin board to make sure she would know where to go and what time. There were few other people looking information, bu they left shortly after Rebecca started checking anything about the tests... last thing she wanted was to be late from something like that. It was amazing how a quick stroll into canteen could make her feel that much more confident about herself. After all, some of the kids, well, most of these kids had powers that had their downsides. She didn't have any other than to be that kind of little 'freak' to others, and she was glad for it... but now, she was making quick scanning through the long name list to see when and where her test was being taken, mumbling peoples names in her thoughts.

"Let's go. Time to test those minds of yours."The housekeeper stuck her head into each students room. She considered each arrival to be in care. She knew what it was like to be powerless and unwanted. She would do everything in her power to make sure they had a second chance, just like she had gotten.

After an hour no one arriving for the test the housekeeper decided to try again. This time she rang a loud bell as she entered each students room. "Come along, children. You agreed to try to become active members of society you can not do that without an education and control of your abilities."

Being so baffled about everything new, Rebecca had missed the first call entirely, still wondering around, trying to find every place of importance so she would know where to go. As she suddenly heard bell rang around the school, she knew she was most likely in trouble... seemed like some people hadn't gone to the tests yet, her being one of them. Walking past the housekeeper with a slight blush of shame, she hurried for the tests, hoping she was at least on the right way, not losing her tracks in the big place.
