This is an AU Naruto RP. The only canon character that exists is the Sage of Six Paths and his two sons, which developed into the Senju and the Uchiha. Other canon clans exist, however their individual members have not.
Rikudo Sennin was a man of great power, and was born into a lawless world where war ravaged the land. Where mankind created a power struggle, the young boy saw foolish monkeys arguing over meaningless worldly attachment. He was born with eyes that could see into the divine, past the earthly plain of existence that humans were born into. He tried to teach those around him of what he could see, he attempted to show them of their wrongdoing. They did not listen... The more the boy grew, and the more he tried to share his dream with them, the more they taunted him and condescendingly called him a fool.
A disheartened child losing faith in the place he was supposed to call home, a cruel world where darkness surrounded him, the child sought to change this. He had what they did not: hope. He did not belong, and traveled far across the land, leaving behind his family. Where present-day Uzushiogakure stands, the boy found a beautiful tree with a single, vibrantly colored fruit among its branches. Climbing the tree curiously, he sat on a thick branch and gazed upon the fruit for a great time. After sitting in awe of the fruit and the energy his eyes were able to see that lie within it, he could not resist consuming it.
This moment would change the boy's life, and signify the blooming of Rikudo Sennin. He was able to feel the physical and mental energy of the world coming together within him, along with the natural energy of the universe, to form a balanced energy. He called this, Chakra. Intent on spreading his dream with this newfound energy, he finally thought he had unlocked the secret to making his dream of a peaceful world a reality. And so he did, but not in the way he had thought.
The tree which he plucked the fruit from was no ordinary tree, but the Shinju, a primordial entity which took the form of a Ten-Tailed beast upon realizing what the boy had done. With its beauty stolen, and the boy in possession of its true power, the Ten Tails ravaged the land and reaped destruction in its path.
Rikudo Sennin, still not a fully grown man nor a boy any longer, rose to the occasion and was able to defeat the Juubi by using the power of Chakra to seal the Juubi into himself. It took him many years, but eventually he was able to quell the entity that was the Juubi. Its rage was subsided with the Sage's power, though it was merely waiting until the Sage would pass to once again destroy the world. However, the Sage, elderly and ill, was able to split the Juubi into nine separate entities and seal them each in a remote location so that the Ten Tails may never be recreated to cause destruction again.
Shortly after Rikudo Sennin passed, he left the worlds in the hands of his two sons, and his twelve disciples. He wished for them to overcome their individual differences and govern the peaceful world he had left for them without violence or hatred. The gift of chakra given to the people was widely accepted, however his ideals were not so much. Those who disagreed with him on how the world should be run, despite his time as peaceful unifier of the world, left the main continent and flocked to the islands off the coast that would turn into the present-day Land of Water. Others who profited from the mindless slaughter of others who held the wealth moved north, to where the present-day Land of Earth was.
He told them not to divide the land, but to share it and appreciate it together. Eventually, their ideological differences left gaps in communication that they could not settle, especially between Rikudo Sennin's sons. The resulting squabble divided the continent governed by Shinobi into 6 provinces. The Land of Water, centered around the Village Hidden in the Mist, largest trade port in the world; the Land of Fire, a highly populated land governed by the Village Hidden in the Leaves; the Land of Stone, containing the Village Hidden in the Rocks; the Land of Wind, a desert with very little but the Village Hidden in Sand; the Land of Lightning, powered by the aggressive Village Hidden in the Clouds; the Land of Ash, holding the Village Hidden in the Whirlpools.
Rikudo Sennin was born in Uzushiogakure, in the Land of Ash, which is located in the center of the Shinobi continent. Those who did not support the Sage's ideals left the Shinobi continent and migrated to off-coast islands which would make up the Land of Water. The Land of Water controls all islands outside of the continent, and one of the larger islands makes up the entirety of Kirigakure. Kirigakure and the Land of Water became the trading port of the world, but also fell into shady dealings for personal gain due to idealistic differences with those who follows the Sage. Eventually assassins, thieves and vagrants began to flock to this country for such reasons. The Land of Lightning is located northeast with Kumogakure at the western border of the country. The country experienced frequent travel as others would have to cross into or through the Land of Lightning to do business with Kirigakure. At first this was good for business, but eventually this increased tensions as jealousy grew on Kumogakure's part. The Land of Wind is the southernmost country, where most of its population resides in Sunagakure. It's a sandy, desolate country without much traffic. They are wealthy merchants who enjoy buying and selling goods, and support Kirigakure in its business. The Land of Earth is the northernmost country which harbors Iwagakure. They are a proud people who mostly flocked to the land for the rich minerals in the area, making many of the people who live their very wealthy. The Land of Fire is the western country of the continent which is a combination of farmland and lush forests with the occasional mountain. Konohagakure lies at the eastern end of the continent. It is a simple way of life, away from all the business and trade of the world. In the center, of course, is the Sage's birthplace and place of rest. After his passing, a deep sadness overcame those who did not leave his homeland, which can still be seen up until the present time.
Eventually the tensions of the economy caused small squabbles between the people of each country, and its leaders, some the disciples of the Sage, could not see eye to eye either. The resulting feuds brewed thoughts of war in the peoples' minds, and when whispers spread of Kirigakure's backdoor dealings with Sunagakure and Iwagakure, Kumogakure became infuriated upon hearing this news. Meanwhile, as tensions grew across the world, the two sons of the sage, who once respected their father's wishes and led the country equally, could no longer stand to work together to lead the village. The one who inherited the Sage's eyes envisioned a future where everyone was at peace with each other out of fear of an incredible power, and that fear kept them in line. For what he saw was that without the fear of his powerful father to keep everyone in check, human emotion and arrogance would lead to their self destruction. The son who inherited his father's body, the younger brother, disagreed and believed that there was another way to unite everyone under a less forceful regime. In the end, the older brother scoffed at his yougner kin, and disregarded his wishes. The two fought, and the older brother's arrogance inevitably ended in his defeat. Though he survived, the older brother was an outcast and was not allowed to remain in Uzushiogakure. He left to Konohagakure, and became the First Hokage, while the younger brother governed the Land of Ash and became the First Uzukage.
These events created tension between the land of Fire and the land of Ash, as tension mounted between the land of Lightning and the land of Water. The land of Earth wanted dearly to protect its interests in the business of Water, so they declared war on Lightning. Water joined Earth, and war began in the northern sector of the continent. The land of Wind remained largely neutral, only wanting to continue its backdoor dealings with Water. The land of Fire and the land of Ash clashed at the same time, creating two warzones on the continent. Ash and Lightning joined forces as neighbor countries, as many of the land of Ash resented Water for those inhabiting it, whom did not support the Sage or his teachings. Ash became caught in the middle, and as war progressed, eventually became the battlefield as the other nations fought amongst each other. The Sage's homeland, and teachings, were largely forgotten as a result. No one seemed to remember that a few short decades ago, there was peace.
The First Shinobi World War ended with much bloodshed on all ends. The Land of Ash was truly mostly just that, ash. Uzushiogakure was barely left standing, and was largely uninhabitable. Suna made out the best, selling goods to the countries as they needed it and saw little action on the homefront or the forefront, rarely engaging in battle. Kiri and the Land of Water suffered heavy casualties, but remained very in tact at home, as their geographical stance gave them a clear advantage. The Land of Lightning suffered much, but stood strong throughout the war, sustaining the second most casualties next to Iwa and the Land of Earth, who were not ready for the vigor and will of Kumogakure. Iwa was ravaged as well, but survived and could rebuild their homes in the sides of mountains. Konohagakure was destroyed by the younger son of the Sage, but the elder brother prevailed by killing his younger brother, and remained Hokage. Iwagakure and its wealth slowly stopped supporting Kirigakure, and became more withdrawn after the war. Uzushio was truly the one suffering the most, with its people left suffering long after the war ended.
Tension still runs high even twenty years after the war. There was simply no way to win in a war like that, and the fact that so much damage had been caused left some wondering why the war began at all, though most simply wanted to end the bloodshed after seeing how terrifying war really was. In the end, none of their problems were solved, it only created more. The world was left with unresolved feelings toward each other.
During the twenty year period following the war, the Senju and Uchiha clans were established, two prominent clans from Uzushio and Konoha, respectively. The two clans fought often, and even after the war still clash on the border of Fire and Ash. Strong leaders remained in Iwa and Kumo, while Suna and Kiri resumed their business, though Kiri gathered and army of trained assassins to support themselves.
To this day, there are rarely talks of peace by anyone. It is clear that without someone of world leader material to strengthen the bonds between Shinobi and remind them of their humanity, the world is left with nothing more than conflict, stuck in the same cycle that had plagued them for years before the Sage, though now with the power of Chakra taught by their savior, the stakes are even higher. The power of Chakra is respected by some, and corrupts others with thoughts of seizing control in a much less sensible way than the Sage had. Many who have learned the ways of using chakra criticize the Sage as a fool for not using it as a forcible means to control others, and that notion is not rejected by as many as you would think...
Dark times lie ahead in this world if the Shinobi are unwilling to learn from their mistakes. And the evil that lies in the hearts of humans has opened the gates to an even more tempting evil... the Bijuu.
