How is Shogun Total War? I haven't played a TW game since Medieval 2. I got hooked on Crusader Kings after awhile

Crusader Kings is pretty amazing, although I personally put it behind Victoria II and Europa Universalis III for Paradox Interactive titles.

As for Shogun, I wasn't personally too impressed by it, at least not compared to Rome and Medieval II.

EDIT: Plenty of people love Shogun though.

I was talking about Shogun I, there.

Shogun II is, personally, my favourite Total War game. The strategic map is not the fucking trolling from Medieval where you had to randomly specialise cities to produce actual units or be an undefended morass that pays you, and the battle is an update from Medieval II etc. graphically and informatively but not damn sunset on pike-and-shot dullness. Anything is better than Rome's "please take many turns to produce this ONE unit" insanity.

CKII is fun. I have got to oneday stop buying DLC. EUIV and Victoria II... so hard for me to get into at times. Victoria devolves into randomly trying to turn things communist or fascist for the hilarity.

I couldn't really get into EUIV, but that's mostly because "WAH, CHANGE SUCKS" EUIII feels more arcade-y and slightly less railroaded, where you can really just kind of mess with the world with abandon without butting heads with the game mechanics.

Or buy the HD edition off steam and get it with textural improvements but everything still in place.

My first play through I was the count of Western Iceland and I sat there for 50 years doing nothing trying to figure out how to play. Then I ended up being an Emperor Consort for the Byzantines.

While I do like CKII, my fondest memories are of CKI. I was once playing the count of Arborea (Half of Sardinia) and was gearing up for my inevitable showdown with Tuscany (Who always declares war on Arborea very early, with pretty much unstoppable forces) when an Irish count decided it wanted my lands. I showed him what-for, and sat my son there to rule while I fought a battle of life and death on my little island off the coast of Italy. I won. I even managed to take Corsica and the rest of Sardinia, tripling my size and power and making a nice little base of operations.

Then I died.

It didn't take long for me to notice I was now a king. Lo and behold, while I was off dicking around in Italy, my son took his ONE dirt poor Irish province, and conquered Ireland, becoming King of Ireland.

And Spain. He had half of northern Spain conquered by the time I took over. Without me noticing. At all.

I've never been so proud of a virtual son.

I like to, again, blob massively within my liege's lands and expand them massively, then wrap the rest of the council around my finger by getting at many favors as I can from them, then essentially run the country.

Of course, once I ascend to power, I completely crush any attempt at vassal autonomy.
