FROM THE COLD ASHES
"People who fight fire with fire usually end up with ashes."
15 years, 4 months, 6 days, 4 hours, and 38 minutes. That is how long the combined efforts of the entire human population managed to hold off the darkness. Giant beasts that crawled out of a massive fissure in space and time known as the Rift. These beasts, known as Fera, first began appearing somewhat rarely. Several months could pass before another Fera would crawl out of the Rift. For the first few years, it seemed that it would be nothing but a nuisance, then it all changed. A mathematician by the name of Gregor Viladikov discovered a pattern between the Fera appearances and was able to accurately predict when a new Fera would arrive. The time between arrivals was shrinking and would continue to shrink. While the news shocked the global community, it still remained that with enough guns and ammo, these Fera were little more than a nuisance. When the 4 year mark hit, something seemed to change in the Rift, it grew very slightly. Until the first Category 2 Fera ripped through the Rift, no one knew how bad things would get. Designated "Gamechanger" by the US fleet stationed at the Rift, the Fera managed to kill thousands before a tactical nuclear missile managed to bring it down after 3 weeks of rampaging across California.
Two months after the first Category 2 Fera came through the Rift, the Global Defense Coalition or GDC was formed to combat the monsters. Over a thousand plans and ideas were sifted through before the GDC settled on funding and supporting two of them. The Jaeger Corps and the Fortress Initiative were formed and began developing the weapons required to destroy the Fera and protect humanity. The Jaeger Corps focused on building mobile combat units that could take the fight to the Fera, while the Fortress Initiative designed and built massive floating and flying fortresses armed with huge guns and heavy defenses. Neither of the programs was ready for the second Category 2 Fera but instead of waiting for it to make landfall, a nuclear payload was detonated as it exitted the Rift and it was so heavily damaged that naval guns were able to kill it before much of anything was lost.
Four and a half years after the first Fera arrived, Floating Fortress Alpha One was finished and the first Flying Fortress or Airfort was beginning construction. At the same time, the Jaeger Corps had completed its first Jaeger, named Excalibur and standing at 200 feet, it was a wonder to behold. Shortly after completion, another Fera punched through the Rift and began its voyage towards Japan. Fortress Alpha One was in its path and didn't give an inch. Though it sustained heavy damage, it managed to inflict very serious injures to the Fera before it was passed up. Excalibur had been deployed just off the coast of Japan and had been waiting for the Fera to arrive. Humanity gained some hope as the massive machine beat the Fera into a bloody puddle on live television. This pattern seemed to continue consistently for the next couple of years until the Rift once again stretched.
The Rift experienced a huge tremor which seemed to unleash the gates of hell. Hundreds of small Fera, designated as Shoju, poured out of the Rift in the wake of the first Category 3 Fera, which was the first to be called Hanta. It took months to hunt down and kill all of the Shoju and it took almost 2 weeks to bring the Hanta down. Excalibur along with 3 other Jaegers and 6 fortresses were destroyed before the Airfort codenamed Skyhammer managed to destroy the Hanta. A wave of innovation and renewed fervor rippled across the globe bringing about huge changes in both the Jaeger Corps and the Fortress Initiative as well as the addition of two new projects. The Home Among The Stars program was a plan to leave Earth and survive on space stations and ships until another habitable planet could be found, though this only received meager funding, it managed to make huge leaps in space technology. The other program caused some debate about what being human truly means. The Aesir program was created with the goal of creating cybernetically enhanced humans that would be capable of fighting the Shoju more efficiently.
Years passed and technology kept up, developments such small Jaegers known as Bellators and massive railgun emplacements built on mountains seemed to be the last breath of humanity escaping. When the end came, it came in the form of four Fera. The Rift didn't stretch beforehand like in the past but instead it just tore apart completely as the massive beasts ripped through. Shapeless and enormous, these creatures only known as the Destroyers only survived for a few minutes while the world processed what they were seeing. High above on the command deck of the colony ship The Exodus the Captain steered the ship downward. Like a hammer from the heavens, the enormous ship crashed into the Destroyers with such force that nearly the entire planet shook. From the ruins of the Destroyers arose the 12 Messatsu. Each standing at roughly 700 feet tall, they simply annihilated humanity's defenses. Though one of them was able to be destroyed, it wasn't enough. Within a year, every city laid in ruins and the last bastions of civilization crowded around the railgun emplacements and out in the most remote locations. On the Great Plains a nearly religious order of cyborgs, Jaeger pilots, Bellator pilots and soldiers known as the Iron Legion, do their best to strike back. While unable to kill a Messatsu, the Hantu that the great beasts birth are vulnerable. Several Airforts and ships formed the Dark Fleet out on the Atlantic ocean, staying under the radar and deploying units all along the coasts. In cities across the globe, small groups of survivors live off the scraps of the old world and do their best to survive the Shoju which seem to endlessly spawn from the Hantu.
It has been 8 years, 2 months and 6 days since the Rift closed. We have never been closer to extinction.

The world is messed up. 11 massive beasts known as Messatsu roam city to city destroying everything. This has been going on for 8 years, not much is left. These Messatsu occasionally give birth to much smaller but still huge beasts known as Hantu. Hantu seem to hunt down large power sources and population centers. Hantu give birth to swarms of smaller beasts known as Shoju. Messatsu stand at about 700 feet, Hantu stand at about 200 - 400 feet, and the Shoju stand at 10 - 30 feet.
The Remnants of humanity are as follows: a group of cyborgs, Jaeger pilots and Bellator pilots out in the Great Plains, the Dark Fleet in the Atlantic, and small cities built around massive railgun platforms built on mountains. Jaegers are huge machines standing at about 300 feet tall and each is unique, there are only 7 of these still active. Bellators are combat suits standing at about 35 feet tall. Many soldiers and pilots were given implants and some small cybernetic enhancements but they didn't get close to what the Aesir received. Most of the Aesir are 90% machine with a human brain. Masters of combat, these men and women are named after the ancient nordic Aesir gods.
Soldiers were trained by the Foreign Legion in France before the end.
Shoju come in all shapes and sizes. Some are smart, some are tough, some are fast, all are extremely deadly. Several Jaegers were destroyed by being swarmed by Shoju.
