She died suddenly in a car accident along with her boyfriend, and his grandfather adopted him, swearing to finally do right by his daughter. Unfortunately, John wasn’t terribly good with children and quickly resorted to hiring nannies to care for the boy most of the time. He grew up with few truly close emotional relationships, and no role model for what love looked like. Victor has dated many women, but none of the relationships went very far. He ultimately decided to take part in the marriage experiment partly for the publicity (he's a bit of a celebrity, after all), but mostly to see if the experts could find "the one" for him... of if she exists at all.
