"One's demise is always one's own making."

Rather recently I came across an interesting idea for a game and I wanted to see how many people were interested in giving it a shot. The idea is that the players work together at the start of the game to create a horror story antagonist by first deciding if they want it to be a Slasher (Serial Killer), Monster or Natural Disaster. After that selection, they get to establish the rules on what their antagonist has to operate by. This can include powers, weaknesses, ect. For example the antagonist of the game I first saw this tried with was a bloodthirsty ghost who could only attack (and basically instant kill) someone while they were in darkness; As long as someone had enough a source of light that lit up their immediate area just brightly enough, the ghost couldn't actually attack them even if both of them were in the same room and looking at each other. The ghost in question could also be harmed and driven off with iron, through it wouldn't actually kill it.

Once the antagonist and their rules have been set up, the antagonist becomes the sole property of the narrator (In this cause, myself) and the players get to create their own characters. Just normal humans who are just on the verge of having the worst (and possibly last) day of their lives. Once the players have their character, the game begins. This is a game of decisions and the players will get to decide what they do every step of the way. The goal is to survive in a horror movie where tropes have a great deal of power and the powers that be are brutal and unforgiving.

Like all horror stories, there is a very real chance that everyone will die due to the fact that things will be heavily stacked in favor of the antagonist. In the event that there is only one player character still alive, that last character will gain... something of a buff. Exactly what shape that buff will take varies but it'll be something that will even the playing field between the player and the antagonist they are up against quite a bit; That doesn't mean that they will win, but it'll give them a fighting chance.

But before we can create our victims, we have to decide how to make our antagonist!

I've put some thought into how to do this fairly. For starters, we're going to start with a simple vote; What do you want the antagonist to be?

Slashers (Serial Killers): A stock standard when it comes to horror, Slashers can range from a single human who is just really good at sneaking around and killing people (Michael Myers from Halloween), a human/former human that has become something a bit more... supernatural in nature (Jason from Friday 13th) or even several people or beings working together (Cenobites from Hellraiser).

Monsters: Monsters are often depicted as mindless, bloodthirsty beasts and to some degree this is true; Where a Slasher might have a mind that processes something akin to a human thought process, Monsters tend to be much more primal and inhuman. The beast that stalks the woods at night, the alien that hides just beyond the firelight, the undead creature raising from the grave hungry for flesh.

Natural Disaster: Natural Disasters are among the scariest of enemies; You can't really fight back against a mist that people disappear into or a plague that does horrible things to those that get it. All you can do is survive.

Time to vote. This will be preferential voting, so you get to number your selections from 1 to 3.

Well, since I'm here I'll throw some votes in...

Monster: 1

Slasher: 2

Disaster: 3

I did that correctly right?

@neogreggory

Yes you did.

Honestly starting to think I would have been better off just doing the vote normally. Oh well.

Monster's in the lead so far. Anyone else want to step up and have a say?

Yes you can. While I want to keep this a somewhat small group (6 tops), we've only had one commitment so far. You'll boost it to two.

Alrighty, I think this will be enough people for the first attempt at this. Five is a good number.

After counting up the votes, we have three for Monster with Disaster coming in a close second at two.

So now let us move on to the next step of the process: Monster creation!

Now since you're all going to be working on this, there is going to be some back and forth discussion between all players. Discuss and debate as you will, I just ask that you keep it civil and be fair to each other. Work together, combine and build off of ideas until we've got a monster that everyone would be proud to have hunting them down. What it looks like, how it behaves, strengths and weaknesses, ect.

I only have three basic guidelines to follow here:

1. The strengths and weaknesses of the monster you create have to make some kind of sense: This is just some simple common sense. A werewolf like creature that is a physical apex predator isn't going to be making people's heads explode with physic powers just like the frail squid monster with physic powers isn't going to be able to sniff someone out by scent.

2. For every two strengths that the monster has, it must have a weakness: Got to give the victims some sort of chance, right?

3. 'Strengths' can be a positive trait rather then a power while 'Weaknesses' don't have to actually be harmful: Not every monster is like Superman; Many of them only have one or two 'powers' but have the cunning and intelligence to by ruthlessly effective with them. Likewise, weaknesses don't always have to cause the monster pain; A monster that tracks by scent might just dislike the smell of Lavender and might avoid hunting a person who manages to mask their scent in the stuff if the only trail is a scent based one.

Ok just going to throw some stuff at the wall and try to get something going.

How about something that can physically travel through shadows instantly, the creature is very weak and relies on speed and ambushing its prey. When I say "travel" I'm thinking some form of teleportation between two shadows.

Again just spit-balling trying to get something going.

I feel the first thing we need to determine is what it physically looks like. Like are we gonna take heavy inspiration from a monster already in fiction or try and design our own creature. Will it walk on four legs, two, eight, or none. Is it slimy, furry, or bony. I feel if we start with what we want the appearance to look like we should be able to make the rest slightly easier.

In my opinion I like the thought of a creature that travels on either four or six legs. I like the sorta monster that can crawl on the walls or ceiling. And to me a grotesque slimy creature would be an awesome start. What do y'all think?

Hmm... I actually really like the teleportal shadow thing, but on the subject of appearance...
I really like the thought of some form of skeleton horror, with either way too many legs and being some form of beast like the boss of floor 75 in SAO, or no legs like some kind of floating reaper.

Slow, quiet, and skeletal.

Teleporing skeleton, eh? *Undertale flashbacks*

That definitely sounds interesting! Something that teleports in shadows probably doesn't need too many legs, unless I'm misreading the messages. Does the monster stay in shadows, or does light not bother it? Is it really slow in terms of walking speed which makes teleportation necessary for mobility, or is it kindof just a thing it has? Does it pull a Reaper from Overwatch and is momentarily vulnerable while it teleports?

I have a lot of questions for this.

I'm liking what neogregory mentioned about a floating reaper teleporting around in the shadows to quickly ambush its prey.

On that note I imagined it pretty much not having legs and being able to slowly float around, the only kind of speed it has would be the quickness it strikes with its...claws?...once it gets the opportunity to strike.

As for the whole how does it feel about light, I figured it really wouldn't mind light but outside of shadow travel its top speed would be slow float.

Oh by the way, an important detail about my life right now...
I'm homeless, and using a 3DS-XL to access the internet. That said, I hate typing on this thing, preferring the solid feel of a keyboard under my hands. Also spellchecking is useful.

That being the case, I will be posting less or not at all during the weekends, since I don't have the means to use proper computers during those days. Also, just to throw it out there, my (user)name is neogreggory, two G's in the middle. Anyways, sorry to derail monster talk, let's get back to that.

Concerning our "reaper", aside from being slower no weakness to light, though perhaps being capable of being blinded by sudden light. On the subject of sight, this thing might be due for a unique form of vision, perhaps seeing through walls at the cost of a poor range of vision, or something simular, that said being a skele it wouldn't have eyes, so I'd suggest either empty sockets, or perhaps be like duskal(probably misspelled that) from pokemon and having a single colored orb floating in it's skull? Anyways, this 3DS touch pad keyboard is annoying me, I need to go kill a dragon or something.

Sorry for not responding and for messing up your name neogreggory.

But anyways on the subject of sight I'll admit I'm not very familiar with Pokemon but I have the image in my head of a dark purple flame that sits in one socket, and will just fade away and reappear in the other.

But other than aesthetics I got the idea that what if, it can see objects that are holding still only a few feet away and otherwise wouldn't be able to see them. But if an object were moving, even in a seperate room with a wall between them.

And since I talked about his eye being a flame how about if the eye got "put out" he would be effectively blind until it could relight it

EDIT- Example for the whole moving thing, say you were standing ten feet away from the thing and holding perfectly still, it wouldn't see you.

But if you were say five feet away it would see, and proceed to rip your throught out.

But if you were avoid hundred feet away and have a nice thick wall between you and it, but you were moving around doin' the robot it would see you, get to you and rip your throught out.

And yes I'm aware I've misspelled throught I just don't feel like correcting myself at the moment.
