So characters were summoned from all over the multiverse but in the process lost most of their power so they have the regain their strength over time. The world can't be traveled to through other means so there can't just be an all powerful alien race landing there to disrupt everything. Sound good?

What if they're...

What if the characters aren't real?

Like, Smash Bros?

But not dolls.

They're weaker copies of the original character, thrown into a wholly new world.

So they can be the character with reduced versions of their own powers, born into the world where the roleplay takes place?

Heroes from the multiverse have their essence collected by some cosmic entity and placed into empty vessels that take on their form and some of their power. This will also explain how they come back to life as the essence gains a new empty vessel to use. The taken essence is its own entity from the hero it was taken from even if originally meant to be an exact copy. They can learn and remember even if they die and transfer to another vessel. The essences are sort of like mercenaries because they can be summoned to aid in conflict across the multiverse.

The ability to be summoned is built into their vessel so they must obey the summon, although perhaps later on can develop a method to free themselves from such obligation.

This is similar to an anime series but has plenty of original ideas. In the anime its past heroes categorized into different classes such as archer and berserker and they fight over a McGuffin. For example, you can summon the anime's interpretation of King Arthur.

That sounds like an amazing idea.

Save for the summoning, maybe a slight buff. Summoning is totally one sided.

Let's say you guys use a mix of the two ideas. An old fantasy world, where warring factions are engaged in a battle to determine the ruler of said world. Henceforth known as LeeMel, the Republic of Skallandia.

There would ideally be no more than two or three factions, tops. Any more than that and it gets messy. Depending on the amount of people, maybe only two. One led by an NPC charismatic rebel leader named, Shin, and one led by the vicious fist of an NPC robot named Clockwork.

Each skirmish would take place in a predetermined land. Where the victor would gain some type of overall advantage. Perhaps Shin sends two of his lesser leveled rebels out to the crimson badlands, where they run into trouble with the tyrant, Clockwork man's equally leveled soldiers sent to set up shop.

Now you have an overall conflict. What is your goal? Is it for Shin's men to esscape? Is it for Clockwork's to wrangle up any rebel supporters? Is the sin condition capture or escape? Win by defeating the opponent? The GM decides such things and the players play it out, with the GM providing some commentary and background as the battle occurs to help flesh out everything.

Well, what is the prize? For the rebel leader is it more men for his cause? For The tyrant is it the decimation of his foes, conquering more land as he proceeds?

Let us say, for this, Shin's men are captured, after a ruthless game of car and mouse. The thread is awarded to Clockwork and his faction. What are the reaults of such, again. Up to the GM, but for this:

A marked increase in Clockwork soliders in the area, making future camapigns. Harder for the rebels in the area. Clockwork's presence is further felt in surrounding lands he may not have reached yet.

I foresee the map, if there is one, being colored based on who controls what, the beginning it is slanted towards Clockwork by one, a lot of unclaimed land, etc. Each had a xerttain number of victories needed to be claimed by either party. For instance, The Dreamers Forest would require three wins by either side to be claimed, while the Olde Wood needs only one

In case it was missed.

You may think the Olde Wood is unimportant, but it actually becomes the most sought over land in all the...land. It is where wars start and end. The land to launch 1,000 ships. Indeed, I shall claim that land or die trying. Possibly die trying many times as Evvie's track record will likely suggest.

On a serious note, maybe I'll create the battleground for Olde Wood.

I've not really thought about anything. Everything I've said has been basically on the spot. Aside from figuring out how to word it.

Ever read The Ballad of Edgardo?

Why not use that as a world?

We don't know much about the world's setting. A similar tone is fine with me, allowing muscular men with squids for faces and all if they really wanted.

It could be interesting to single out certain characters and try to make their lives miserable and they have to power through it. All in good fun, of course. So for those of you who don't know the story, mods kept trying to destroy two characters by throwing in "random event" challenges and then sent characters out to kill them, yet somehow the underdogs survived and exploited loopholes and stuff to win.

It seems like the way this multiverse will run will allow for random events and stuff as they progress through the story, so something like that could happen to willing victims.

I... think, it might be best to discard the term 'multiverse' and instead focus on the persistent world element. If that means certain characters are excluded, so be it. The characters should mould to the setting, rather than stretching the setting to accommodate every type of character.

That's why I suggested reducing pre-existing character's abilities to match the setting. Maybe a uniform source of magical, spiritual, technological, and physical strength is accessible to everyone on this planet. Some people, the player characters, are way more adept in this setting.

I'm fine with this even if it means Evvie's out. We can still do other multiverse battles outside of this roleplay, after all. Perhaps I'll at last find inspiration to get a new character out once this setting develops.

From my point of view, persistent worlds could be the best if you have a thread for each location. For example, if a group of characters want to go to the Olde Woods, there would be a thread labeled as such as you jump into. I believe we did something similar in the past but not on large scale. This style of roleplay is best if the forum itself is dedicated to it, unfortunately, as it would take up a lot of threads and organization would be an issue on here. If we made another forum then getting a lot of people involved would be a separate issue, as we'd need advertisements and stuff.

I think that Rilla had something different in mind to this, and I agree.

In the many failed old attempts, we had loads of threads dedicated to varying locations, and the problem was simple. There were too many of them for too few players. Everything got spread way too thin.

This idea revolves around having the setting laid out, and then having individual 'campaigns' as such popping up. Each campaign would be like an ordinary arena fight, characters in a location with a goal of some kind. But, the result of said thread would impact the overarching world.

Me and LeeRoy have been talking about it. My humble suggestion is thus:

We start small, smaller than we have in the past. The setting is a sprawling med-fantasy city surrounded by wild and wonderful places, and inside that city two (or perhaps three) mercenary guilds (preliminary idea for factions) are vying for political control. In order to further their aims, the members of each individual faction get involved in crazy situations, both PvE and PVP, with the other faction or with bandits or criminals or anything really.

We make the city the OOC thread, and the IC for when people have down time between 'events'. We give out 'quests' or the like in this thread, and people go and do them in new threads, recording the results and having it impact the world. Things can start pretty small, with limited impact beyond fatalities and the like. But eventually rivalries will grow, political figures will rise and fall, and we can introduce more of the world and bigger threats at will.

That's what I would like to see, at any rate. Opinions?

It's a chat app that's very organized and uses way less processing power than Skype. It's fast and easy to use. I'm trying to gather all of the Arena players to it, because if we can have a more lively and organized chat going on, we'd probably be better off getting these things started.
