Countless times throughout the history of mankind has shown us that no Great Empire, no matter how rich and powerful, lasts forever, all great peoples fall eventually. The Romans, the Ottomans, the British, the Mongols, and many more. Great Empires that simply withered away into the passages of time, small traces left only in the history archives of their successors. And into the truly far and distant future, yet another is to fall into oblivion, by far the greatest successor of these previous powers in sheer scale alone, the Terran Imperium. The Imperium came about in the 28th Century, seven hundred years after humanity left Earth to colonize known space, there was a great conflict that had engulfed all of Human Space, a war between the Democratic Nations of the Solar Confederation, and the forces of the young Terran Imperium. Over a decade later, and the Imperium proved to be victorious in its final conquest of Earth and all of Human Space.
The victorious Teran Imperium soon turned its gaze upon the greater galaxy, and embarked upon a Grand Campaign that would last for over five hundred years. By 3345 A.D. or the 560th Year of the Imperial Calendar, a great portion of the galaxy fell under the dominion of the Terran Imperium, and would continue to rule for over a thousand years and so begun Pax Terra, or the Terran Peace, although for many, it was far from it.
The next Millennium was far from Peaceful for the most part, wars, insurrections and revolutions were a common occurrence, and all met with brutal Imperial might, all seemed hopeless, the Imperium seemed an unstoppable and well-oiled warmachine, what they were unaware of however, the Imperium was slowly rusting away from the conflict and sheer size, and was on the verge of collapse from within, but the Emperors of past and future had fiercely maintained the Propaganda of a unified and stable Empire, despite the contrary, even the Imperial Family and the ruling Noble Houses were divided among generations that schemed against one another.
By 4455 A.D. or 1670 I.C., It all came crashing down, the Terran Emperor and Empress, along with several members of the Imperial Family were assassinated, their personal star yacht shutting down and crashed towards the Capital City of New Rome. Blame was set upon by many suspects, be it the the older children, rival Houses, Anti-Imperial terrorists, the list goes on, nonetheless, chaos and disorder fell upon the Imperium as the various Princes and Princesses bickered and fought to claim the throne for themselves.
With no clear successor, the Imperium fragmented and fell into civil war, all the while thousands of various revolutions sprung up throughout the Imperium, cementing its final breaths. Over two centuries have passed, the former Imperium now split between dozens of Successor States, some claiming to be true Inheritors of the Imperium, others leaving the past behind and looking to the future. For over two centuries, the galaxy was wrought with war, as pretenders, despots and mad men had ruled many parts of the former Imperium, very few bastions of stability remaining. The Galaxy was in a turbulent state of peace and war, a perfect status quo after the fall of the Imperium, the Great War however would change this.
For almost two years the Great War waged, the galaxy's major powers all pulled in this massive conflict, and in its aftermath, in such a short amount of time, the war had left countless worlds in ruin, nations had collapsed, Earth, once the seat of power in the old imperium, was no more, now a lifeless husk. the Nations of the Former Imperium had been left into disarray once more, forced to rebuild from the conflict.
It is the Imperial Year of 2000, over a century has long passed since the end of the Great War, a wave of new change washes over the galaxy once more, new nations rise out of the ashes of the old order, powers from beyond the Imperium's borders are on the rise, and old threats make their return.
