Everyone who's been born in Granite Oaks in the past twenty years knows the story of the Granite Oaks Reaper. Over a six month period, twelve high school students were killed by one deeply disturbed young man, Harrison Hughes. Hughes was an outcast, born on the wrong side of the tracks and a loner by all means. They locked him up and threw away the key. After that, the town sort of went to shit. A good portion of the town left, fleeing the horror that had plagued them for far too long.
Now days, Granite Oaks is a quiet town with a population just a little under one thousand. The story of Harrison Hughes is always in the back of everyone's minds, but it is rarely the subject of a public conversation. We've almost erased the stain that the Reaper left on this community. Key word: almost.
Granite Oaks was founded in 1856 by a Massachusetts born man who'd made a fortune during the 1849 Gold Rush. He and his new wife settled down in the middle of a forest, only a mile from the chilly Pacific Ocean, and soon a town sprouted up. This man, Jeremiah Jefferson, helped build the small group into a tight knit community that would soon become Granite Oaks, named for the oak trees that populated the forest, and the granite that lay hidden in the rocks up and down the coast.
Granite Oaks would go on to reach it's boom just after the end of World War II. A factory sprung up that was devoted to mining and refining the granite that was littered throughout the town. The small, coastal town would go on to become one of California's top producers of granite. However, after the 1970's recession, the factory was left in shambles, and Granite Oaks fell off the map, and became the sleepy town it is today. Well, aside from the Reaper Murders.

After the closing of the granite factory and Granite Oaks' slow decline into irrelevance, the town went through a period of time where nothing seemed to happen. Life moved on, but rarely did it ever excite anyone. That is, until 1996. The Granite Oaks Reaper claimed his first victim, Casey Harraway, on January 13th, 1996. She was found, sliced up in the middle of the school's courtyard. The police investigation turned up no leads, and just as they were beginning to think that the culprit may have been a drifter passing through town, two more bodies turned up.
Kyle McMahon and Lucy Armstrong were discovered in town square, their bodies sliced up just like Casey's. That was when the FBI got called in, but they wouldn't be able to stop the killings. The Reaper continued killing until June, but by that time, a good portion of the town had fled. Harrison Hughes was caught while attacking his last victim, Mary Kastner. In Harrison's home, they found the sickle that had been used in the murders, as well as pictures of each and every one of the victims. Mary was saved, and Hughes was arrested. He was sentenced to life in prison, and left to rot. No one shed a tear for him.

Granite Oaks is comprised of four main sections, whose official names have long since been forgotten: Town Center, the Factory District, Manor Town, and Ocean View. Town Center, so called because of it's location, as well as it being the area where all the major town buildings are, is where most people spend their time. Town Center is where the town hall is, as well as Granite Oaks High, Granite Oaks Elementary, and the police station. Also found in Town Center are a multitude of small businesses, such as Lucy's Diner, and the family owned corner store, Jefferson's.
South of Town Center lies the Factory District, where the more industrialized part of town lies abandoned. A small section of town, the district is practically empty. Home to the abandoned granite factory that caused the town's boom, the Factory District is a mess of similar factories whose owners left town after the recession. Now days, most kids use the warehouses to throw parties or smoke weed with friends.
To the east of Town Center, Manor Town lies, big and beautiful. This is the rich section of town, the nicest part there is. Here's where the money is, where the mayor lives, and all the big names of town. There's a bit of a resentment between the residents of Manor Town and those of the much poorer Ocean View. Over in Manor Town, they blame Ocean View for turning the town into a horror story, as that's where Harrison Hughes was raised.
Manor Town's counterpart is on the other side of Town Center. Ocean View, so named for it's perch on a cliff overlooking the ocean, is where the infamous Granite Oaks Reaper was raised, and is where the poorer residents of town live. Ocean View in it's best section, is a nice enough part of town. Smaller houses than their contemporaries to the east, but nice enough. The worst parts are on the outskirts, where drugs have a tight hold on many of the residents, and where plenty of them curse the names of the town's rich families.
