We are all tired of being stuck on this cosmical speck with its monotonous ocean, leaden sky, and single moon that is half useless. Its possibilities are exhausted, and just as Greece became too small forthe civilization of the Greeks, so it seems to me that the future glory of the human race lies in the exploration of at least the solar system!
— John Jacob Astor, Journey in Other Worlds: A Romance of the Future, 1894
Timeline
2017 – Decline in natural resources, over population, threats from asteroids, climate change and the possibility of nuclear warfare, a few of the dangers that faced Earth and ultimately led to a plan being enacted to reach the moon again and set up a permanent base of operations for eventual colonization of the moon. 2020 – It is announced worldwide through the combined efforts of namely America, Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany and India a plan to launch ten pioneers to the moon after an initial trip brings supplies and materials to the moon’s surface in a decades time. Over the course of the next decade technology is developed thanks to brilliant minds and billions and billions of dollars. 2030 – Terra, the first rocket dubbed to transport cargo to the moon explodes on launch. It was back to the drawing board and this was a massive halt in sponsors, investment and eyes on the program to colonize the moon. 2035 – Just five years later after influence from private corp SpaceEX it’s anounced that Terra I and Terra II sister ships and descendents of the original rocket would launch in Fall of that year. The launch was successful which lead to a huge media and interest surge towards the seemingly revitalized colonization program. First manned ships to begin building the first moonbase are announced for the new year. 2036 – January 15th, the date when man left for the moon to begin the long realized dream of colonizing space, the plan originally designed to send ten pioneers now doubled in size with half of the boarders being robotic rover types designated as dangerous terrain navigators and performing tasks humans can not. The journey took three days and was televised much like the original moon landing, after a tense and turbulent landing period the mission was announced successful. Temporary habitats are set up as construction of the moonbase begins. 2040 – Moonbase Eden as dubbed by residents is fully functional and on target two years away from becoming 90% self-sustainable. Plans are being discussed to expand Eden and there are murmurs of some private corporations looking to set up their own habitats on the moon. If one day there is to be a New Earth they want to be among the first to have a foothold. 2045 – Eden reaches 80% self-sustainability but is three years late on targets for higher numbers. However, the base has expanded and the human population has grown nearly 90. Rover type vehicles have been developed by or sent to Eden and are being used for aiding scientific research particularly over longer distances away from the base by the dedicated SpaceEX science corp at Eden as well as engineers and others from the original residents. 2050 – The population remained steady over the last five years with no increase and only four deaths, unrelated ocassions with two being on eploritory missions, the others an undisclosed malfunction within Eden. The base has been expanded more again now and could potentially hold up to 300 permanent residents, talks back on Earth indicate towards the first space citizenship being at Eden, however these were whispers in the wind not to be enacted for at least another 20 years.
Overview The year is 2050, the Earth’s population is about to push 10 billion, vast mega cities reign over 65% of the world’s land mass, demand for energy has doubled. The question “how will we adapt?” seems to have been realized in some small way by the success of Eden, a moon-base of 90 denizens with the potential to hold up to 300 and plans to have this as the Earth’s first outer planetary city. Humans now had the potential and the means to become a two-planet species. Dreams of colonizing Mars having been around for decades were now no longer mere fantasy but “the next project”. Governments, private investors, corporations all are pumping extreme amount of money and willpower into furthering the space frontier.
However, the expedition that lead to the fruition of Eden was no and can remain to be no easy task. Adapting to a life that is while in many ways eased thanks to terraformed habitats within the confines of Eden is not for everyone and over the course of the program some have wished to opt out despite the no turn back clause. Work and life is rewarding however for those who are willing to put in the work and most on Eden see themselves as a community.
This role-play will take part on Eden with the potential to also take part on Earth in the future and will cover the lives of some of these residents from the trivial and mundane to thought provoking and intense tasks and doings. Ideally I’d like a large enough group of 10 to play out this role-play but somewhere between 5 and 10 should suffice. Sorry for not giving out too much information here but I figured I’d give a general overview of what this is about and try gauge some interest before providing the fleshed out details in a thread.
I’m looking for fairly active writers, I’m not a grammar-nazi but I appreciate that you don’t text speak and have some grasp on creative writing. If you’re active and willing to post at least 2-4 paragraphs every 3 days, the more active the better and take part in a sci-fi story that may branch off in any direction in the future but for now being about life on the moon then express your interest. Of the maximum ten players I’m looking to fill out a few roles and professions which will be explained in greater detail later including: Medical personnel, Engineers, Researchers, Mechanics, Technicians. Get your creativity hat on because I want to hear your ideas as well.
That's one small step for man. One giant leap for mankind.
Plot? The 60's and 70's were an incredible era for space exploration. Missions from NASA's Ranger and surveyor to Russia's Lunokhod all gathered data on the moon whether from orbit or on the surface in order to prepare for man's landing. The climax of the era of exploration of course, was Apollo where humans stepped on another body in our Solar system for the first and only time in history.
This role-play imagines a fictional alternative where man revisits the moon and sets up permanent base there while talks of colonizing the entirety of the moon are in talks back home. EDEN is the first and so far only base built on the moon with a capacity for 300 people and a current population of 90. EDEN is located on the far side or dark side of the moon at the South Poles, a region known to experience long periods of darkness and sparce light. While originally starting and still acting as a scientific outpost, in it's efforts to become self-sustainable and supported by numerous expansions still continuing, EDEN has become the first step in building a city in space that can house citizens rather than purely a workforce dedicated to scientific research or upholding EDEN.
While the main idea is to keep this relatively open to be able to go in any direction in the future; Lighting, supplies (EDEN is 80% self-sustainable and relies on quarterly deliveries from Earth costing in the millions each), hazards, espionage (Private corporations and countries are looking for their own foothold on the moon and may have sent spies to EDEN underhandedly to try and gather intel or sabotage) among other things and possibly the introduction of alien life will give plenty of story arcs to work along to keep things interesting. The idea is depending on occupations will effect a group of 2 or 3 players in a certain arc more than others.
Occupations These are just examples, feel free to get creative. Mission Specialists - Responsible for the management of the science or other major payload elements of the mission. Please specify in Passport. Flight Engineer - Serves as systems and field engineer, copilot or driver on moonscape vehicles, and would assist Mission Specialists in performing any other mission objectives. International Mission Specialist - Same as Mission Specialists but usually assigned payload missions by home agencies i.e. Russia, America, UK. Manned Spaceflight Engineer - Military personnel who accompany military payloads from EDEN - Earth and vice versa. Doctor - Deals with most medical issues that require more than first aid/first responder attention. Flight Medic - Paramedics in space
Citizens of EDEN
Name:Lucas Riker Age: 29 Sex: Male Nationality: United States of America Occupation: Manned Spaceflight Engineer - Specializing in the maintenance, usage, and logistics of munitions. ID no.: LR7132021 (Tell me if you want to make the ID numbers, I just put the first and last initial of my character at the beginning, then put in his birth date after.)
Bio: Born in Topeka, Kansas July 13, 2021, and thrust upon the age of space colonization. Just a year before his birth they announced the efforts to join hands across the globe and pursue space exploration. Like most children living in the outskirts of Topeka, he always had his head in the clouds. Dreaming of going beyond his hometown and doing something spectacular with his life. The quickest way out he found, upon graduating high school, was the military. At 17, he began to push for them to receive him into the Army as early as possible. It wasn't moments after graduation that he was already preparing to leave his family and loved ones behind. Serving as an ammo logistics specialist, he spent most of his career being a "BB counter", as they were called. Learning about different things that went "boom, bang, zoom" and anything in between. It interested him to no end. Fast forward to his promotion to Sergeant First Class in the Army, he had just reached his 7 year mark and he was no longer as satisfied as the child of old. One thing that had taken the world by storm though was the constant pursuit of space colonization. At that point, Sergeant Riker took it upon himself to diversify his portfolio in hopes of making himself more of a candidate in the space programs being created. He began enrolling himself in classes discussing different interstellar equipment, mining tools, and anything that might need a proper eye kept on during travel. After years of training, networking, and constant badgering of any Lunar recruiter he could get his hands on, he finally got his opportunity. In 2045, he left his military service and joined up with SpaceEX as a Manned Spaceflight Engineer. With his prior experience being in explosive weaponry, taking care of the maintenance and logistics of mining equipment, parts for ships, bits and bits of research pieces used at EDEN was a little less stressful. 5 years, that felt to short, have past since he began his life with EDEN, and he couldn't have been happier with his choice. Personality: Riker is a natural joker. He understands that these situations are extremely serious at times but likes to bring light to those situations with a little humor. However, he has the capacity to be professional at any time it is needed to be. Other: Music is his biggest hobby. The Ukulele is his pride and joy and he will always take it on long flights to help relax the mood of himself or anyone else.
Name: Erica Stewart
Age: 28
Sex: Female
Nationality: United States (of Irish/German descent)
Occupation: Doctor / Former United States Air Force
ID no.: Not Yet Assigned
Bio: Erica was born in Seattle, Washington to a pair of physicists. Growing up in a world of academic prowess and science, she took a particular interest in space travel at a very early age. During high school, she competed in robotics competitions, and entered college with interest in engineering. However, while working to tweak the mechanics of biomedical equipment that a local hospital was planning to improve in its laboratories, she discovered a whole new area of science: medicine. From that point forward, she pursued a career as a doctor, specializing in biomedical advancement (such as creating artificial organs, internal prosthetics, brain-mapping, etc.) During her residency, she made the decision to enlist in the Air Force, deciding it was the best way to continue practicing medicine while still being surrounded by engineering and staying close to aircraft advancements. It was through this that she was approached by NASA and the SpaceEX program, who were searching for individuals of various professions to begin the process of colonizing the moon. Having no family and no other commitments, she accepted. Erica was within the first group to be sent out, and while her main objective is to monitor the health of everyone else and run tests, she has also taken it as an opportunity to conduct her own personal studies, keeping a detailed record of the way the new environment interacts with human biology, as well as psychology.
Personality: Erica was raised in a very strict household, and has no time for bullshit. She has a very strictly-business attitude to everyone she interacts with, and can at times come off as too serious, uptight, or even condescending. While she values human interaction from a psychological standpoint, she doesn't like to make small talk, and makes no time for it. Growing up very focused on her studies and academics, she isn't very well versed in the way of socializing, and although she has a strong personality, tends to keep to herself not only due to her analysis of others, but due to insecurity. She is also very much a stickler for the rules, and fails to see why people get upset when she calls them out for doing something they aren't supposed to. The way she sees it, they were all sent here for one purpose: Discovery. Their duty is simply to check things out and report back the results, for the future of mankind, rather than for themselves.
Other: Nothing I can think of for the time being.
Name: Thomas 'Tommy' Hackett Age: 36 Sex: Male Nationality: Irish Occupation: Flight Engineer ID no.: TH1667906
Bio: Tommy was born an only child to working class parents of the generation birthed during or around the time of Ireland's 2009 crash and recession. From a young age he was fascinated by Outer Space, books, documentaries, fiction, science-fiction - the topic was something he could just never tire of talking or thinking about. When asked by his elders "What do you want to be when you grow up?" The answer was almost always the same with a little variation in his teens. "I want to be an astronaut, I want to go to space." Tommy was always a bright kid. His mother, Judith (affectionately known as Jodie) had always called Tommy their 'miracle' on account of how up until his conception they believed they could not have children. In secondary school getting into the wrong crowd and through the almost ritual rite of 'boys will be boys', Tommy's grades began to slip and his record as a trouble-maker began to grow. Fighting, use of substances on school grounds, verbal and physical threatening of teachers were a few of the marks against him. Coming into his senior year at school it seemed like Tommy was going to be 'asked to leave' effectively being expelled without the hassle of going through the BoE (Board of Education). Thanks to the good graces of his Technology & Workshop teacher who fully believed in Tommy's potential, he was saved from fate with the knowledge that in the time it would take them to process his expulsion he'd have already finished school with his results. Thomas senior, young Tommy's father had always had his own problems, alcoholism, drugs and gambling to scratch at the surface of deep psychological issues but he was always someone Tommy looked up to in some respects. He was a hard-worker, a good father on occasion he was sober, a provider and a man who maybe with a push in the right direction could have been more. In those ways, Tommy wanted to be like his father and go on to achieve greater things, truly spectacular things. The realization came the night he nearly left school forever, sitting across from his dad at the kitchen table, drinking and passing a joint as they did many nights. Tommy knuckled down for the rest of his senior year and stuck his head into books harnessing his natural talent and intellect and capacity for learning. He left school with relatively impressive results went on to study Mechanical Engineering in the capital, Dublin's Institute of Technology. It was during his third year of the course that his work placement for 6 months lined up a series of events and acquaintances that realize Tommy's lifelong and childhood dream. Reaching space. The year he finished and graduated from his course, 2035 was right around the time Terra I & II had been successfully launched and landed, the first idea of building a base on the moon had been realized. Tommy secured a job working for the ESA (European Space Agency) as a Systems & Mechanical Engineer mainly dealing with design, construction and use of machines among other things that would be taken to the moon or used to get there. It was only a couple of years later before Tommy was approached with an opportunity of a lifetime, to join those on EDEN as the base had been dubbed as a Flight Engineer, his background in mechanical engineering, short but interesting experience at the ESA and handyman capabilities made him an ideal candidate and after three more years of preparation in 2040 Tommy Hackett arrived at EDEN a fully fledged astronaut, a dream he thought for the longest time had been lost with childhood. Tommy has spent the last decade on EDEN. Personality: Something of a reserved introvert, Tommy can seem at a slower pace when interacting socially with others, preferring to think before he speaks or acts. Never the type to wake up and spring into action this has become a bit of a forced trait closer to a habit since coming to EDEN. Like running, for many it can take time to put on their jogging shoes, feet feel heavy as if they'll never get moving but when you pick up pace nothing will stop you. Tommy is not an unsocial creature, some would argue it's the Irish in him and he just can't help it. His accent and potatoes often being the running joke at his expense. A friendly face and smile for just about anybody is Tommy's way of being, while it may take him a little while to warm up to you, he's a loyal and honest friend. Other: N/A
Bio: Casey is the middle child of three, her father is a journalist back on Earth and her mother a Nurse. Her social status could be described as middle class although she does not personally agree with a class system - one of the things she likes about her new home.
Casey's childhood and adolescent life was spent mostly online. She had her history of friends and boyfriends and was particularly active sexually in her teens but when given the option she'd much rather spend her time online in second life type games and forums and grew an interest in conspiracies and potential for life in the universe. One of the things that drew her to an interest in space and particularly life out there were the many conspiracies she read about the moon; a faked landing, music on the dark side of the moon, the moon actually being inhabited by aliens. While she enjoyed the fantasy she saw in many of these another pass time she developed was debunking said conspiracies.
Doing well in school she went on to major in Bio-Engineering at university in East Germany and never returned to Poland since. She made her way to EDEN through SpaceEX where she worked on numerous classified projects as well as some more mundane research from anything to medical to botanical before leaving Earth. She has only been on EDEN for 6 months, having being among the last to have steadied out the population and losses from death there. Personality:
Ambitious - Reliable - Impulsive - Boring
Casey is very goal orientated and is often perceived as boring on the surface. Ambition for discovery fuels her and she prides herself in her punctuality and reliability. She has a bit of a wild side that can come out among those close to her but is generally a level-headed down to earth kind of gal. When working on a project that requires teamwork she is a good player but if it is her work she is known to be bossy in order to get results. Other: Polish is Casey's native tongue but she speaks German and English fluently and conversational French, she can also speak a little Klingon from a previous relationship with a Star Trek enthusiast.
