His father and mother were both members of the Hand, and when they fell on a mission it seemed only right that he was inducted into their organisation. his youth was of benefit, as he took to learning rather easily, although until he was a teenager most of his lessons took the form of games. Upon becoming a teenager his lessons took a turn for the worse, and his lessons were more real. Nonetheless, he took to them like a fish in water, seemingly in his element. It was during his late twenties that he suffered an epiphany, and sought to leave. It was during one mission that his team encountered some League of Assassin members. Both were after the same target.
A furious fight erupted, and he took the opportunity to escape in the confusion, looking back at the carnage - all were dead. It was at this time that he encountered Oliver Queen, who just happened to be on holiday. Seeing something in him, took him back to the United States. Over the next few months found that his protege had a keen sense of justice, disappearing at night, deciding to teach what he had learned, hoping to guide his replacement.
