Alias
Aquaman, The Waterbearer
(Formerly) King of the Seas
Name
Orin Atlan-son
Powers and Abilities
Atlantean Physiology
Orin's physical attributes are dependent largely on his level of hydration, and so will be displayed here on a relevant scale.
-Submerged: When Orin is under water, or in water, his strength can be compared to that of Superman or Wonder Woman. Though not a speedster, his level of speed far outclasses the finest human, or even Atlantean athlete.
-One to five hours out of water: In this time frame, Orin's Atlantean strength begins to wane, although he is still quite powerful. By three hours, he is able to lift approximately 25 tons as a limit to his strength (about as much as a tank). His speed at this time remains impressive, and still faster than any non-superpowered human, though it is drastically reduced from his incredible speeds in water.
-Five to nine hours out of water: At this point, Orin is about as strong and fast as an ordinary Atlantean. That is to say, he is about as fast/agile as an Olympic athlete, and is able to lift approximately two tons.
-Ten+ hours out of water: At approximately ten hours without contact with water, Orin is weakened to the levels of strength attributed to an ordinary human who engages in regular vigorous exercise. The only time Orin will reach this point is if someone forces him against his will.
Telepathy
Orin, as a memeber of the Atlantean Royal Family is a practiced telepath. Though not as powerful as beings like the Martian Manhunter, he is able to communicate telepathically, and defend himself to a degree against psychic assaults. Control over sea-life is a facet of this ability.
Trident of Poseidon
Orin is in possession of the Sea God's Trident. It serves as both a symbol of his right to the throne of Atlantis, and a powerful weapon, having been granted to his ancestors by Poseidon himself, along with the title of King of the Seas. The trident has various uses, listed below,
-Hydrokinesis: The Trident allows it's wielder complete dominion over water, allowing them to manipulate and conjure it to every degree. From the tiniest drop, to the largest wave, the Trident's wielder has absolute command.
-Storm summoning: The Trident's wielder can summon and control storms, like Poseidon himself. From Hurricanes to Tornadoes, although larger storms require more concentration.
-Electrokinesis: The wielder of the trident can discharge bolts of powerful electric energy in the form of lightning bolts directed at enemies. This power is usually focused through the Trident itself, but can be focused through the hands as well.
Hand of the Waterbearer
Orin's right hand, lost in his brother's treachery, has been replaced by the Godlike being known as the Lady of the Lake, and is now made of sentient, living liquid that is magical in nature.
-Molecular Manipulation: Aquaman can alter the shape and density of the hand, for example Orin can make his hand into a sword or harder than steel.
-Healing: Using the mystical water of the Hand, Orin can heal himself or allies from grievous injuries, though this requires concentration, and cannot be performed on the fly, or during battle.
-Moisture absorption: The Hand allows Orin to absorb moisture from anything he touches, be it animate or inanimate, and use it to hydrate himself. This can be used as a weapon, but it is a drawn out process, and isn't necessarily effective during combat.
-Scrying/Communication: Orin can use the hand as a scrying pool, allowing him to see through any source of water, as if it were his own eyes. The Hand can also be used to communicate with the Lady of the Lake directly.
Back story
Born into the Atlantean royal family as a descendent of Poseidon himself, Orin was raised to be a king. From an early age he was groomed to command and protect, and to be served. Well-suited for his birth-role, Orin made a name for himself, rising to a prominent position in the Atlantean court when he was just a prince, learning the ways and politics of his people, as well as those of warfare. By Twenty, Prince Orin was well-respected, and it was obvious that he was the chosen successor to the throne of Atlantis. However, his brother, Orm, envious of Orin's position of respect, plotted against him. Orm, though powerful, was not a match for Orin alone, and he knew this, so he exiled himself from Atlantis, and searched the forbidden depths of the seas with dark magics, in order to find some way to defeat his brother.
During Orm's mysterious disappearance, Atlan, Orin and Orm's father, died, conceding the throne of Atlantis to his only remaining son, and most worthy heir, Orin. Orin decreed that he would not be corronated until his father had been properly mourned and laid to rest, and so a week passed by with Atlantis in silent mourning for their lost ruler. After the week was done, Orin's corronation day had come, and he recieved the Trident of Poseidon, and prepared to receive the Crown of Atlantis, when the ceremony was interrupted by explosions that rocked the entire city. Orin's brother, Orm, had returned, and brought with him horrors from the deepest reaches of the sea, where the lines between dimensions blur. Using his Atlantean royal command over aquatic life, he had built himself an army and laid siege on Atlantis.
The extra-dimensional monstrosities quickly decimated the unprepared Atlantean guard, and Orm himself marched into the Throne room, where his brother was being corronated. Orm had been changed by the powers he had allied himself with, and was much more dangerous than he had once been.Confident in his dark new abilities, Orm challenged the would-be king Orin to single combat, in order to decide who would rule Atlantis. Taking up his father's Trident, Orin accepted the challenge, and the two fought. However, Orm's new dark might couldn't be bested, even with the Trident of Poseidon in Orin's grasp. Orm defeated his brother, removing his right hand with his blade, and impaling him with the Trident of Poseidon as an ironic mockery. He then hurled the trident (and his brother) into the deep blue of the open ocean, and solidified his rule over Atlantis.
Orin, near death, fell to the ocean floor. Sure of his death, he resigned himself to his fate. In the blackness, as he faded, he saw a droplet of glowing water, unlike the rest of the seawater. Indeed, unlike any water he had ever seen. The droplet seemed like a star in the blackness of the deep ocean, falling slowly toward him. Then another appeared, and another, and another, until it seemed like the sea above him was a waterfall made of liquid light. Eventually, the light hit him, it's warmth bringing life back to his dying body, it's light blinding his drowsy, half-closed eyes.
When the light resided, he was half-submerged in a pool of water that stretched, waist-deep, as far as he could see. The water shimmered with an otherworldly light, though there was no sun here. In front of him lay his trident, floating still on the magical waters, and beyond that stood the figure of a woman, blue of skin, and in pearly white flowing robes. The woman introduced herself as the Lady of the Lake, and the Queen of the Secret Sea. She explained that the Secret Sea was where they were now, and that it's waters flowed into the oceans of a thousand thousand worlds, granting them life. The Lady explained to Orin, who was still silently in shock, that he would be chosen as her champion. He would be her weapon against the horrors that his brother had brought forth which tainted the waters of the earth. She granted him the title of The Waterbearer, a title held by aquatic defenders spanning many worlds across the universe, all connected through the Secret Sea. As a badge of office of his new title, and a sign of good faith, she gifted him a replacement for his lost hand, made from the sentient waters of life itself.
With his new role as guardian of the waters, as well as his thirst for vengeance upon his brother, and need to free his people from Orm's tyranny, weighted on his shoulders, he left the Secret Sea, with a new ally in the form of the Lady of the Lake, and a new weapon in the form of the Hand of the Waterbearer. It was in this time, when he returned to earth, that he bacame known as a hero amongst the land-dwellers of earth, stopping devestating oil-rig accidents, guiding vessals through the waters, and stopping countless waves of his brother's horrors from reaching the surface world. His role as Waterbearer and protector of the seas quickly subsumed his need for vengeance, and he found that he had too much on his plate to actively seek out and challenge his brother.
And so, for several years, Orin became known as Aquaman by the surface world, and became accepted among the world's countries as yet another "Superhero" in the ranks of that ever-growing group. And so it was that he found himself allying with the other Heroes in the planetary defence against the would-be invaders from outer-space.
On the day of the attack
During the attack, Aquaman held off the waves of invaders near Los Angeles and the surrounding area with waves of his own, rocking the coast with hurricanes and storms just off of the shore, staving off any aquatic assault that the invaders had planned. He himself was on land in the city, doing as much good as he could, slaying many of the alien invaders himself. When the news of the Man of Steel's death hit him, he fought with more fervor than before, and beat back the splinter of the invasion fleet nearest him, destroying the ship that they were using with several bolts of lightning from the heavens, driving the hulking alien craft into the deep, and then using his command of the sea-life to route the remaining enemies aboard the ship. After the fighting stopped, he left the land as swiftly as he had come, not joining in the open mourning for Superman, though he had come to respect him so. He new then more than ever that he had to reclaim the throne of Atlantis. He would need the backing of the Atlantean forces to keep the world from falling into chaos.
Since That Day
Since the events of Superman's death and the failed invasion, Aquaman has launched a full-scale one-man war on Orm and his horrors in order to reclaim his rightful place on the throne of Atlantis. However, it is a constant, grueling, and nearly impossible victory for Orin, who has decidded to seek out aid from other heroes, and possibly world governments, despite his pride.
Character Aim
Proud but wise, Orin is every bit a king in personality. He will be a protector of the Seas, and will look down on many surface-dwellers for their pollution of the earth, which will conflict with his need for their aid. He will be unlikely to join in petty crime fighting on the surface, seeing such things as below his powers and title. However, he will protect those who treat the seas with respect, and will often decimate pirates and other sea-faring undesirables.
