@Gowi I can vouch for Minor! He's great. <3 ...and because he's found you, now I need to take another look because I will be kicking myself if I don't. *darts off to read summary posts again*

Shy, when was the last time we RPed? And you needed incentive from one of your new friends? I'm hurt, really.

Before Gowi does a review, I did a quick and we're gonna need a background. We don't even mind a fleshy paragraph, just something that establishes who he is and his basic intentions. Gowi will make ya add it anyways so I'm just saving some time :P

Well, just do like me... got tired of dealing with my ADC's bulshit pushes and the jungler smoking herbs in the jungle while the bot gets ganked....

And then went full "fuck it"

Result: ended up dealing more dmg and getting more kills with my healer champion than the freaking ADC and the Assassin champions

Oh ok. So I can think of something I guess... Which background? Virtual or normal?

But he should review everything but that though xD.

Benchmark how I've heard it used doesn't mean what it seems to be used to mean here. Might someone elaborate?

"pool of experience"? meaning...the same town? The same playtime? The same skill level?

Do real-world skills carry over in any way to the game? For example, would a good dancer be better at similar tasks in the virtual world? And relatedly, would skill as a /gamer/ give any benefits? Like the opposite of the way that my lack of skill as a gamer pretty much guaranteed I died /very/ quickly in guild ranking battles in one of the two MMOs I ever played.

It sounds like the in-game history is the history of your avatar, and not intended to be done the way a fully-written character would be. In other words, it's known they were never born (as such), merely created. It's detailing how they fit into the virtual community, and not the fictional alternate world of Pariah itself. Right?

TFW the char you've been wanting to play is technically but not effectively blind, you start adapting and overhauling, and then you find out an accepted char is similarly impaired. Eh, I'd already decided that it needed dropping, so.

...TFW dance is a primary attribute irl of the character you're working on, and the second accepted char is a dancer. *headdesk* Right, might need to rethink this. ...Now I'm tempted to bring in Nikki. Except I really dun wanna play her. I use her too much for this sort of thing.

. . . oooh, Max and Malie might be fun. I wonder if I can pull them off in here, given there's a distance restriction. And that Max is an enforced pacifist...hm. Trying to figure out how that would even happen. Or if they'd need reworking...ugh. *throws ALL the ideas at the wall, and watches none of them stick*

Except I'd much rather remake Cecilly-the-dancer than use Max and Malie. >.< *flailing* ...Wait, this might work, if she's not a dancer in the game world. RIGHT.

@NarcissisticPotato particularly pinging you, since coDM

Narc is better with this one, but essential it is a set of acquired attributes given based on experience, training, and study. Like how Hanako’s character, Rael, can decipher herbs from one another or how she is faster because of her conditioning and experiences.

Do real-world skills carry over in any way to the game? For example, would a good dancer be better at similar tasks in the virtual world? And relatedly, would skill as a /gamer/ give any benefits?

Skill as gamer would give no benefits from a skillset standpoint because Pariah is more of an augmented alternate reality than a MMORPG. It was once described as a “Simulation with RPG elements, not the other way around”. However, I could see someone with certain talents in the “real world” finding excellent use of utilizing them within the game; especially if one person happens to be a surgeon or martial artist.

pool of experience"? meaning...the same town? The same playtime? The same skill level?

The same level of experiences and figurative level, yes. It is a safeguard to protect from having an inexperienced character with no renown and literally the top “player” of the simulation.

It sounds like the in-game history is the history of your avatar, and not intended to be done the way a fully-written character would be. In other words, it's known they were never born (as such), merely created. It's detailing how they fit into the virtual community, and not the fictional alternate world of Pariah itself. Right?

In many ways I look at this like reputation within the framework of the world so players can form character impressions based on notoriety (or lack thereof). As you can see in Hanako’s Character Sheet I’ve tried to describe how her personality, behavior, and profession have all resulted in a basic concept of who her avatar, Rael, is seen as. It is a utility for GM events and NPC interactions as well.

I’m not sure what you mean with the “virtual community over fictional world” speculation, however.

Both please, Arch! c:

@shylarah
It's 3am! ;-; But you're lucky I'm an insomniac- let's go!

OK, benchmarking is a somewhat unique design but it's based on systems like Skyrim. Benchmarking is a cut-away from traditional MMOs which work entirely on character level. I.E. in normal MMOs, you pick a class (say ranger) and as you play the game, your level increases and you unlock more ranger abilities.

Pariah is different because there are no classes, no definitions of what makes a mage or a tank. Thus, we need something else for levelling. Benchmarking is this something else. It works like things do in real life. You don't become a better swordsman by becoming a more experienced person, you become a better swordsman by using a sword. Benchmarking works by specific experience. Abilities aren't unlocked by levelling up your character, abilities are gained by levelling up skills via the achievement system. The achievement system rewards work - if you kill 100 monsters with a sword, you're a better swordsman. Alternatively, if you kill 100 skeletons, you become proficient at killing skeletons. This allows players to spec as they please.

There's another end to this, of course. Benchmarking works with nearly every skill you think deserves to belong in a medieval fantasy world. In fact, you can become a high level player without killing a single mob. This is done by speccing into non-combat skills like baking, farming or annoying your precious Co-GM at 3am >.>

So spec into what you want to, within limit, of course! c:

Right, do real world skills carry over? Yes and no. Pariah isn't like a game. It doesn't have buttons to press. It's another world and to do something, you need to know how to do it. So yes, if you're a good dancer in real life it'll carry over but you won't have abilities as they require levels.

Virtual history is just a description of what your character has been up to since the game's release. Not a lore description of your character you dirty roleplayer :P

The character we have uses dance to kill. Your character could technically just use dance to make money in game.

But yeah, I think that's everything! Anything else?
