Henric Mellowstone
Gentleman pirate with a love of all things technical.
NAMEMaster Henric "Henry" Mellowstone, A.K.A. Tech-rick
AGE31 years, 17 at sea!
GENDERYes. I mean, male.
PLACE OF ORIGINGekkō, son of an information peddler and a local "working woman". Has a second home in Hidōshuu, a small smugger's island not far from Tsukuyo.
APPEARANCEOld salt, what can I say? He has along, raven-black hair typically tied back in a ponytail, and takes great care with his appearance - always neatly trimmed mustache and beard. He typically wears a sort of vest or cuirass made from scales of an alloy that is one of his professional secrets. Beside this, he tends to wear sturdy boots and gloves, made from leather and with plenty of hidden pockets for gadgets and small weapons, and sturdy, easy-on-the-eye clothes made from wear-resistant fabric. He also tends to wear a bandolier, as he has both sidearms and long arms he uses in fighting. His belt carries his swords and four duelling pistols, as well as a number of pouches for equipment.
PERSONALITYHenric is, to all intents and purposes, an absolute oddball. Eccentric to the max, this old pirate thirsts for three things in life: Knowlegde, excitement, and the unknown! Okay, there -is- a lot more to him, but on the surface, that's all he shows to those who are not in his closer circles.
In reality, Henric is a very inquisitive man. Despite having zero magical talent, he has a keen interest in the theory, and possible applications of magic in real life. He is also very much a realist - he will not pursue a good cause just because it is good, but will consider how feasible it is. Mostly, this makes Henric an explorer - an explorer of land and sky, an explorer of academia, an experimenter with gadgets and gizmos. He plans to forge his legacy in steel and stone - or whatever fancy material he's destined to invent or discover.
He is not above doing something for personal gain, as his years as a pirate will attest. More often than not, he does something for his own sake. However, fighting the good fight or promoting the good cause is often a challenge, something this perpetually bored man will welcome more often than not. This all makes him a rather unlikely philantropist, but at least he usually gets the job done.
SKILLSET● Sailing & navigation
● Engineering (particularly metallurgy)
● Well-versed gunslinger
WEAKNESSWhile Henric is capable of many feats of chemistry and science, acrobatics and combat, Henric has zero magical powers, can barely roast meat on a stick over a fire, and is absolutely terrible at stealth, at least compared to other pirates. He is also not blessed with a particularly hardy constitution or heavy armour, so he won't survive long in a prolonged battle.
HISTORYHenric, as stated earlier, was born the son of an information peddler in Gekkō, to a woman in one of the city's places of ill repute. Despite the nature of his conception, Henric knew the love of both parents his entire life, and was quick to pick up on his parent's bartering and information collecting skills. He also grew adept at making these bits of information fall into place in relation to one another, soon learning the art of blackmail as well. He was always bookish, as reading and understanding was paramount to his success in his father's profession, but got bored in his teenage years and decided to take aboard a ship.
For six years he was a swabbie, then a deckhand, then a midshipsman aboard a pirate vessel. There, he learned the ropes of an airship and how to use force to get what he wanted. He'd often claim books taken in a raid as his share of the spoils, always eager to expand his knowledge. However, during his sixth year of pirating, henric grew tired of the gig - he felt it lacked refinement and grandeur - and moved on to other exploits.
He travelled around for a time as a tinkerer, buying broken things, repairing them en route to the next town, and reselling them at a profit before repeating the process. During this time he grew highly adept at working metals, and particularly clockwork and machinery.
This went on for another four years before Henric turned to yet another way to pass his time - pirate hunting.
Yes, Henric went on to shamelessly hunt the very pirates of which he had once named himself a number. He took hire as airship engineer aboard an imperial pirate hunting vessel, and spent five years honing his abilities as a sailor, inventor, and fighter. The crew would occasoinally take smuggling jobs on the side, low-key like, to earn some extra scratch.
Peddling his inventions and providing his services as a tinkerer in various ports eventually earned Henric enough money to buy a ship of his own - a cutter, large enough to serve as a floating, sailing workshop. Captaining this ship for the last two years, Henric has turned a sweet profit, divided and tied up in real estate and various enterprises around the Empire, and beyond.
Recently, however, with the urge to explore the unknown, came a need for sailors of daring, skill, and innovation to overcome the challenges of the hitherto unknown. Henric being Henric, he jumped at the chance to be the airship's resident engineer when invited, docking his ship and preparing immediately, sending his perplexed and overworked apprentices to practise their crafts in the unforgiving world.
