Have you heard of Elvarren?
If lately you have been dwelling on that one word; please proceed with caution. While we all seem to be looking for it, our quest will be no simple walk in the park. For one, the ‘park’ is rather a thick forest in the far north of Canada, a few kilometers off the nearest road and half a day by foot from the nearest town. Here is hoping that ‘they’ won’t find us in a region of the world so cold and remote. Our closest neighbours consist of various predatory species: lynxes, foxes, wolves and even bears. But hahaha… of course those aren’t the worst things that could spot you when you go to fetch water from the river.
We hope you enjoy your stay irrespective! It’s likely to be fun, at least sometimes. We’re not exactly in the best position here and none of us really know what’s going on but Dusk seems to have some idea so why not follow him? I mean, he’s pleasant enough, especially compared to some other people in our group. Let’s hope we all get along, though!
So what can you expect from this RP? We’re not sure on the specific genre it will twist to but for now let’s say it’s a mix of thriller and fantasy with some sci-fi elements. We’re playing as a group of young people fighting for their life and for their goal - the mysterious Elvarren. They’re facing quite a few challenges along the way but what’s important is that they’re together now. It is up to you how your character ended up in such an odd place, though if you need help we’re here to aid your brainstorming.
The group consists of about 25 people and they all seem rather… unstable. Well, maybe not initially, but can you really trust someone who can kill people by touch and hears voices in their head? Not that you’re not one of them. Perhaps exactly because you are you should know better. Does unity make us stronger? Only time will tell.
Check below for the general outline of constraints you need to work within. We generally encourage creativity so have fun devising your character. The template is in the character section and the first post will be reserved for updating the active characters as we progress. How long you’ve had the abilities, how well-developed they are, how well you can hear your internal voice and what does it tell you; and even how long you’ve been with the group - is up to you. Your attitude to your situation may even be positive!
When it comes to pace, we hope to see at least one new post (per player) every couple of weeks but we won’t be super strict about pace. The story starts, as we established, in a cabin in the woods of Canada and the year is... let’s say 2018. For the rest - just wait and see!
Last but not least, we’d like to extend a special thank you to @Solekii who is the original creator of Elvarren, and the person who gifted us with the wonderful opportunity of going to look for it. We hope you are well. And perhaps, if fate and Elvarren allows it, we shall be reunited once more!
The supernatural
Your ability. To some degree it must have always been a part of you. But never has it been as apparent as in recent times. At one point, you have been feeling weaker and less energized by the day… Gradually sliding into the darkness; if not for that one word. ‘Elvarren’. What does it even mean? But for some reason it speaks to your most base instinct. Indeed; the prospect of finding it instills you with a sense of hope.
For starters; one ability we all share is to drain energy from living things by the touch. And needless to say this can go at the expense of human (or otherwise) life. Some of us have unknowingly taken energy from their friends and colleagues to keep themselves energized, lest they themselves faint or worse. Perhaps it is for the better to leave the civilized world, as we have, for the good of all humanity.
The abilities we have beyond draining energy? Personally we are looking towards (real life) mysticism and the occult rather than blatant fantasy magic. But if you have a good idea, we won’t bar. Anything you can think of is fine so long as it's not ridiculously powerful, and in a relatively early stage of development. And not per say violence orientated. For example, you could have extrasensory perception, the ability to animate objects, manipulate and read minds, levitation or even flight, etc.
These powers are gradually awakening inside us, accompanied by a voice.
‘’Voice?’’
They call themselves Perpetuals. They are mostly mute, and seem to share little. But, at any given moment they may come to speak to you, ask you questions or commandments with such a dominating presence that we are compelled to comply each time. Resisting the voice, the Perpetual, takes strength. They come like ebb and flow. But they seem to not be hostile. It is my belief they wish to help us -- certainly in regards to not being CAUGHT by Men in Grey. The Greymen. The ominous ‘they’. They seem to be employed specifically to catch people like us. But by what agency or body of government? ...I honestly cannot tell. Let’s hope we live long enough to find out.
Some Rules
Try your best to spell correctly. It’s a shame to have a really interesting post littered with spelling and grammar mistakes to detract from the point. Pay special attention to capital letters, apostrophes for words ending with ‘s’ and you’re/your. I’m not your babysitter, man. Just be cool yo.
Whenever possible, try to drive the story forwards with your post instead of just reacting to what someone else has done/said.
Try to be polite and respectful to the people you’re playing with. We’re all here to have fun so let’s try to respect each other.
If you have a problem with anyone, try to talk it over with them before taking it to the GMs.
Feel free to introduce, with good measure, unforeseen circumstances without GM approval. For example, your character gets spotted by the Grey men while doing groceries or slips and breaks a leg while hiking. We encourage initiative and creativity.
