Tin Men

Facing continuous political upheaval, massive economic collapse, a major energy crisis, and environmental disaster on a global scale, the world has been engulfed in chaos of near apocalyptic proportions. The EU and other World-wide organizations have collapsed, and alliances are breaking down as countries compete with one another for the world's dwindling resources. In this sea of anarchy, the only thing that separates order from anarchy, as nations wage free-for-all-battle for survival and supremacy, is the military might of the United States, who are determined to keep the peace- whether other countries want them to or not.

But such unprecedented conflict worldwide requires as unprecedented of a military force. Enter the Remote Infantry Corps: robotic soldiers deployed in warzones around the world, controlled by human operators thousands of miles from the action. These Remote Infantry- dubbed Tin Men, are highly resilient machines, unfazed by fatigue and possessing of the intellect and decision making prowess only a trained soldier could provide. While the Tin Men are not indestructible, the soldiers piloting these machines have little to fear about possible injuries or sickness. Immune to injury and death, and seemingly untiring, this new breed of American warrior has a battlefield edge that's all but unstoppable. With their powerful new tools of war, the American military has forcefully begun policing the entire world, and bringing its anarchy to heel.

Or so it would seem.

When a routine patrol through the civil-war stricken streets of Syria goes awry and the men and women of the 1st Remote Infantry Division finds themselves cut off from headquarters, they must make a desperate push out of hostile territory towards home. However, such a daunting task is easier said than done, and far less simpler than originally believed.

With the men and women of the 1st Remote Infantry Division finding themselves facing up against foreign nations, sick and tired of being under the heel of American occupation; anarchists, ranks swelling with rocket-wielding “Bot Killers”; and even each other, it’s the worst possible time for the Tin Men to face their most crucial mission. An economic summit under terrorist attack, the U.S. president running for his life, and more, the Tin Men must take the fight to the next level—if they want to be the last combatants standing, and not the first of their kind to fall forever.

Plot and Context

Hello and welcome to the interest check for 'Tin Men', a military RP based in the alternate near-future, when America has become something of a Freedom enforcing equivalent of the schoolyard bully, forcing its will upon the smaller, less influential nations. In this alternate universe, organizations such as NATO, EU, the UN, etc still exist, but are considerably less powerful or influential. America is not the only major power in the world, however, due to the energy crisis and general economic crash the world is in, most countries tend to keep to themselves and look out primarily for their own interests. Thus America has taken upon itself the role of international peacekeeper, and have deployed its forces to various locations across the world- much to the chagrin of other nations.

Political intrigue aside, this RP will focus primarily on the struggles and tribulations of a single squad of the 1st Remote Infantry Division, as they struggle to survive in an increasingly hostile place. This RP will try to adhere to some sense of realism, and will aim to be a dark and gritty military RP- so if those aren't your cup of tea, this probably isn't the RP for you. I want this RP to focus on a relatively small group, so I'm going to try to put the character limit at 4-5 players total. As such, this RP is not first come, first served.

No lie, the T-visor kinda sold me on the armor set. I wanted them to look like 21st/early 22nd century soldiers, but still just a bit out there, a bit edgier

@Gunther and honestly, Avatar really didn't spring into mind when I wrote this, though I definitely see where the overlaps would be.

I have to agree, what springs to my mind are Avatar and CHAPPiE. Luckily, two of my favourite movies!

@vietmyke Wait, I'm not really feeling the urgency here. If an RIC unit is trapped behind enemy lines, we wouldn't be feeling the spirit of a death-defying adventure, because if we 'died' we'd just go 'oh crap, there goes a few billion dollars', and we wouldn't sustain any bodily injuries.

Also, what year are we in?

I would agree the "Sense of urgency" would be different because no life is being lost, but in a capitalist country like the US, preservation of high value equipment is a concern. I recall having to pay money by means what is called a "Statement of Charges" (DD-362) for the loss of something I may have neglected to properly secure. The loss of money can be a real motivator. Personally, if I was a RIC pilot, I wouldn't want to have to pay for losing my RI-1, :(

But it seems to me, the real story is with the lives of the operators back in Virginia or California or wherever our characters are located. The story can be split between the two locations much like in the movie Avatar.

There is plot devices to put that sense of urgency in place, not to worry. There's gonna be an 'Oh shit' moment, when the typically invincible and cavalier operators realize that they're kinda fucked.

I kinda want to leave it a surprise, but since the book synopsis is fairly readily available, I don't mind mentioning it if people truly want to know.

And as far as year goes... I hadn't really come up with a concrete date. Lets call it 2042

@DeadDrop I am- this whole shebang isn't first come first served, so I accept players based on the quality of their writing and factors like that.

Plus, you're only the 4th person here anyway so I wouldn't be cutting it off from interest just yet. I am however going to do my best to keep this RP small. I always have a problem with accepting more people than I know with what to do, so I'm committing myself to focusing this story on a small team.

That being said, everyone feel free to start working on CS's, and I'll translate this page over to an OOC thread

Thank you, sir. I always enjoy RPing one, two or several hundred NPCs when the availability presents itself. I also prefer smaller RPs. I don't get a lot of time to do this so, if I only have to keep up with three or four others I should be good to go.

Was my CS sufficient? should I add more? I wish I could take a "bare bones" version of the tin man (RI-1) and add all the patches and "tatoos" I listed on the CS. That would be sweet. :)

@Gunther I'll give you more detailed feedback in a bit, but technically, you can buy an RI-1, those armor sets are called 'Galac-Tac'. Runs about $800 for the helmet and armor, so it's not exactly cheap.

Cheaper than one would expect for a state of the art robotic soldier. The again, you speak in USD, so who knows how much it's worth.
