Once upon a time, as all stories start, magic dominated the lands. Creatures that cannot be described roamed free and no one was safe from them. Humans, nor the other races, knew how to harness the magic around them and these creatures could only killed by it, so, only prayers and luck were their only defense. That is, until one day when their prayers were answered. Something that wasn't seen in these lands appeared one day and it was capable to heal any injury, rain fire at a flick of its wrist and other miracles. Never this creature spoke a word and soon it was called "The Silent One". The Silent one roamed the lands and killed all the magical creatures it found, until, one day when it closed the portal they appeared from in the first place. Some persons of every race was chosen as The Silent One's disciples and taught how to bend the magic around them to their will, as soon as these persons mastered this skill, The Silent One disappeared without trace. The people that learned to use magic started calling themselves " The Magi ". They, themselves taught others to use magic and soon The Magi Guild was formed. The original Magi soon found that they aged very slow and soon they were renamed as " The Immortals" while the lesser Magi used the original name of "Magi". Many years later, the magic that consumed the lands faded and number of persons of any race that could learn how to harness magic lessened, The Immortals started loosing their powers slowly and age soon caught up with them. It was deemed necessary to do something in order to preserve their lives. The strongest of the Immortals sacrificed the lives of the least strongest of them to create an artifact able to harness magic from the air around them. 'Thus the Amulet was created. But it was not enough. While they didn't loose power anymore, they still aged. Another plan was made. Reduce the number of people from every race so that less Magi would be born. Using the Amulet, creatures akin to what inhabited the lands before The Silent One's arrival were created and turned upon the others people, killing anything that they found. After a few hard blows against the other races, The Warrior Guild was formed. A union of the races against the rising power of The Immortals and their Magi.
After 70 years of fighting the Warrior Guild, now called The Empire, won the war and enslaved the Magi, killing those of them that were too powerful to be left alive and destroying almost all the inventions made by them. The Empire enacted the Citadel 75 years after the war. The Magi that are detected with magical talent are sent to the Citadel. An anti-magic prison of sorts. Inside, Magi were imprisoned and most killed.
Anything of magical in nature was brought to the Citadel and then they were examined and either locked inside the Artifactorium or destroyed.
A shadow crept along the walls, as if alive. The Lord Templar guarding the "Artifactorium" didn't noticed anything out of the usual. They seemed to be talking about a certain Mage that was caught training with swords, when the shadow materialized and slashed their necks before they even had time to move a hand. A Mage soon came out of the shadow. Shadows crept over his body as armor, his face was covered in shadows. All of it except his neck where an Amulet that was broke hanged from his neck, devouring the shadows as soon as they tried to cover that exposed part of his body. The Mage approached the door and put a finger on the door and a shield of pure light repelled it as soon as it touched the door. The Mage shook his head and put his hand on the Amulet and it glowed slightly and then the door broke in many, many pieces. Revealing the artifacts inside the Artifactorium.
A small army of Templar came out of the halls attracted by the sound and the strong light that emanated from the shield. The Mage turned his head and shook it as he pointed his finger towards a 4 Templar dressed in golden armor and suddenly their eyes turned red. They stopped in their tracks and turned towards the other Templar and attacked the others. The Mage entered the Artifactorium, closed his eyes and soon the broken Amulet started glowing and in the other part of the Artifactorium another artifact started glowing.
Many artifacts were kept there but the Mage simply ignored them, moving towards the glowing artifact. After a few minutes, minutes in which the Templar he "persuaded" to join him fought everyone that tried to enter the Artifactorium, he reached the glowing artifact. A small part of the same Amulet he had on his neck. Fire parts were missing from it but with this one, only for remained. He looked at it, grinned and moved his hand over the Amulet piece and it flew into the Amulet around his neck, uniting the two parts. Soon after the Amulet started glowing again and a small explosion of magical energy emanated in the room. The Mage, was of course shielded but nothing else was as everything in the room disintegrated instantly. The Artifactorium, stood now empty and the Mage simply smiled and then simply vanished.
The guards that protected the Mage were killed and more guards poured in the room, only to see it empty.
After the theft of the Amulet piece, a group was formed with the Empire's finest and the strongest Magi that were not yet killed, but even them failed their mission. Again and again, groups were sent to retrieve the Amulet pieces and all of them failed. The Empire decided to throw caution in the wind and sent an army to pacify the Wasteland and retrieve the pieces and that signaled the beginning of the end. The Magi Saint waited for them with a remade Amulet and when the army came, so did the end of the Empire. Using the Amulet, The Magi Saint consumed the souls of every soldier in the army and then unleashed the magic of the Amulet. The Wall exploded into many, many pieces and an army of magical creatures was let loose. Magic soon took the lands as it consumed anything it touched and the Empire fell. Now, a few years later, the lands are very different from what they were. Magic covered the lands and the remaining survivor races put aside feuds and fear of the Magi in order to survive. The Dark Human race was the first to go extinct and soon the Gargantu gone extinct too, followed by the mass slaughter of Kil'garen and Gob. While the first survived in small numbers, the Gob slaves were all killed. Whatever is left of the Humans,Elfan and Kil'garen races have taken refuge inside The Citadel. The last bastion of a fallen Empire. Screaming defiance at the slowly approaching magical ooze.
No heroes remain in the Citadel, as those died at the start of the war. Refugees, thieves, children and some Magi are the what stand between victory or defeat.
520 BMW (Before Mage War) - A group of the most talented Magi met in Boralis's Library to discuss the face of the world. After a week of talking, they decided it's time to challenge the Gods themselves and cast the most complex spell ever.
521 BMW - A year later diseases and monsters started to roam the lands. People gone to the Magi to help but were sent away or killed on the spot.
522 BMW - The attacks continued and in December The Warrior Guild was enacted. The Magi soon started to loose power to the Warrior Guild
523 BMW - The Human capital has been attacked by unknown monsters and everyone in the city was killed. The Magi didn't do anything to stop the attack. People started to understand who was behind the attacks.
525 BMW - The Warrior Guild started to gain more and more influence as the attacks became more deadly than before and entire cities were erased. The same year the Magi sent an army to kill the Warrior Guild's leader. The attack failed and at the end of the year , the Magi War started.
595 BMW - 70 years later the Magi lost most of their cities to the united races of the Warrior Guild. Too many casualties were taken by the Warrior Guild. Something had to be done to win the war otherwise they would soon loose even if they took most of the Magi cities.
596 BMW - An attack of the Magi Capital city of Boralis was deemed necessary to win the war against the Magi.
597 BMW - The siege of Boralis began but the Magi left in the city didn't need food nor water and their defenses could withstand years of fighting. Years the the Warrior Guild didn't have.
598 BMW - A plan was conceived to end the siege of Boralis. Now the biggest and bloodiest fight in the recorded history. A low ranking soldier devised a plan to destroy the Magi's biggest weapon , the Amulet of Dala'radan. The Magi's source of infinite power. An attack on the Boralis was followed by a infiltration team sent to take the destroy the Amulet. Most of the army was getting decimated as the low ranking soldier and a few suicidal soldiers infiltrated the palace and with luck from the Gods , she fought two Magi Masters and destroyed the Amulet. When the Amulet was destroyed an event called the Rapture happened. Magical energies kept in the Amulet exploded and destroyed a big part of Boralis along with the army sent to conquer it. From the ruins of Boralis a woman was seen holding a small Amulet piece. She was beyond saving but she was soon raised to the status of Saint.
1 AMW (After Magi War) - The races gathered together and decided to unite against the Magi's offspring that still appeared.
2 AMW - The Empire was founded and all races joined it but the Kil'garen and Gob.
10 AMW - The Rapture apparently did more that destroy a part of Boralis. Magical Energies spread around the Magi territory killing or mutating everything in it's path. At the end of the year , the place started to be called The Wasteland and monsters appeared to kill those that approached too much.
15 AMW - After a few failed experiments with Magi technology , the technology was deemed " too dangerous " to be used and everything that was Magi related was destroyed. Many people were killed in the attempt to hide artifacts and such from the Empire's army.
20 AMW - Creatures started to attack travelers and such outside of the Wasteland. In September a large wall started to be built to completely cut off any access to the Wasteland.
42 AMW - After two decades the wall has finally been built. Manned by Dark Humans alone , it served as a protection against any kind of monster that would come out of the Wasteland.
70 AMW - A new technology based on the Magi tech was created by the Empire. A device that could be used to detect magical energies in a person as soon as they are born. Killings soon started as Magi were killed when they were babies.
71 AMW - After some time, it was decided that it would be better to study some Magi and use their own powers in the advancement of the Empire instead of killing Magi that was found.
75 AMW - The Citadel was enacted and Magi that were found were imprisoned and most killed there after they were no longer useful or too strong to be left alive.
80 AMW - Yet another technology was created based on Magi Tech in secret. Phylacteries that kept the blood of a Magi that could be used to track a Magi if he escaped imprisonment and would find a way to hide their magical energy.
94 AMW - Rumors about a Magi "Saint" started to spread as wildfire in the Empire. A Mage that resided in the Wasteland. It was soon deemed that any mention of the Magi "Saint" to be punished by death.
97 AMW - Even tho' the Magi "Saint" was no longer mentioned in large circles, the rumors continued and so the "The Wastelander" was born. Bards sang about his "evil" deeds against the Empire and all that is good but no one has ever seen him. He became a legend to common folk that was used to scare children that didn't obey their parents ( something like the Boogie Man ).
100 AMW Summer - A thief entered the Citadel's Artifactorium and stole the piece of the Amulet that Saint Courage brought back from Boralis and a group of the Empire's finest and a few Magi is sent to the Wasteland to get the Amulet piece back.
100 AMW Winter - After a few months, the group is declared dead and a few other groups are sent with the same mission
101 AMW - An army is formed and sent towards the Wasteland in order to pacify and eliminate "The Wastelander"
102 AMW - The army is defeated by a single creature and the Wall falls.
1 EOT Spring (End Of Times) - Magical ooze spreads life wildfire throughout the lands, killing and mutating everything it touched
1 EOT Winter - The magical ooze took over everything but a small territory in which the Citadel is located
2 EOT Spring - First sightings of magical ooze near the Citadel
2 EOT Spring - A magical-whisper is received by the Holy Templar from an unknown source with a location and one other word "Hurry".
2 EOT Summer (Present Day) - A group of volunteers is gathering in the central yard of the Citadel to receive their mission
Magic System
With magic anything and everything is possible. From the smallest fireball to the biggest earthquake spell, from healing a small cut to bringing back the recently dead and the list can continue. But as big is the spell, so is the cost. To heal blindness, one could loose his own sight and to incinerate a person, one could first burn himself.
In 102 AMW, a device is built by the strongest engineers and enchanters of the Empire to negate the costs of these spells and 'thus, the Rings were created. The rings gave the use the power to harness the magic around them and releasing it without having to pay the costs of the spell they cast but it didn't come without it's downsides. While the costs were negated, the knowledge to cast the spell was not so one would need time to study and understand the spell before it could be cast and that was not the only downside, the ring needs time to recharge it's power and so, a Magi could cast any spell he needed but with delays between them.
Magi Spells are categorized in schools of magic and they are :
Life Magic : Life magic spells are used to heal any wound and condition that someone may had. Complex spells allow the control of unintelligent beings, bringing back the recently departed etc.
Death Magic : Death magic spells are used to wage war against everything that is alive. The spells most commonly known are Death Touch, Necromancy (complex spell) and Domination (a spell that allows the user to completely destroy a creature's mind).
Black Magic : Black Magic is known to be used to create diseases and the corruption of one's soul.
Nature Magic : Spells of the Nature Magic school are used to influence the nature. Raise trees out of the ground or kill someone using a poisoned vine are spells that are common between the Nature Magic users.
Elemental Magic : Spells of this school are used to influence the elements. Be it a fireball or a sudden hurricane a Elemental Mage is known to be a force to be reckoned with.
Kinetic Magic : Similar to the Jedi (this is just for reference)powers (Force Push , Force Pull). Magi that master this Magic school are known to be able level entire buildings with a mere move of their hands.
Enchantment Magic : A form of magic that is only usable on objects. Any Magi can learn this magic school but in order to master it they would still need to study another Magic school. Users of this school of magic were the people responsible with creating the Rings.
Races Available
Human : The main population of Mal'Gar ( the world's name). They could be found anywhere in the world before EOT, now their population is counted at several hundreds.
Note : Non-Magi Characters cannot cast spells.
Kil'garen : The Kil'garen live separate from the Empire being the only race that maintained it's neutrality in the Magi War. They are humanoid in shape but have a fur all over their skin, got a tail, green eyes and cat-like ears. Even if they live outside Empire territory, they still subject themselves to the laws of the Empire due to being afraid of a invasion. Now, only a handful remain and old feuds no longer matter.
Note : Non-Magi Characters cannot cast spells.
Elfan (Elves) : The Elfan had the second biggest population before the Humans, now, their population is counted at a few hundred as most Elfan stayed behind to defend their, now fallen, homeland.
Note : Non-Magi Characters cannot cast spells.

Skills (2 combat skills and 2 life skills(cooking/survival skills/reading(yes, that's a skill in a medieval world. Without "reading" skill, one cannot read what is wrote on walls, books etc)) : Also. Remember. Our character will not be seasoned fighters/Magi. All of those were sent to stop the disaster from actually happening and then to defend the Capital and other important places. Think in the lines of : village hunter, peasant on the field, village smith etc. For Magi Write "Reading and Writing Skills" and then go to the next section.
Spells : For Magi Only, leave blank if not Magi Prior to the EOT, you lived inside a prison. You are now free only because no one cares about keeping you imprisoned anymore. If you were imprisoned, you were not allowed to study so when freed you only had time to learn maximum 3 spells + reading/writing skills.
History : How did you escape the magical ooze ? Where were you when it started? How did you end up at the Citadel taking refuge? What were you in your previous life? Why did you volunteer to the mission? ( This is a must ) For Magi Prior to the EOT, you lived inside a prison. You are now free only because no one cares about keeping you imprisoned anymore. So, your history is easier to write. You lived inside a prison 99% of your life and now for about an year you are free. What did you do in this time? Why did you choose to stay inside the Citadel? How do you cope with the idea that you'll help the people that imprisoned you in the first place for something that your ancestors did? Why did you volunteer to the mission ?
Personality :
Notes (things purely for story) :
Inventory : Objects that characters have on them. Enchanted objects will survive the journey but nothing else so write here only the Enchanted objects your characters have. For Magi Only write "Ring of Power" here 'cause that's the only thing you've got, for now. For Non-Magi Think about any object that can be carried easily (think daggers, swords, bows, amulets, not backpacks, horses etc) with a maximum of one magical property. Don't go crazy. It will be upgraded as time passes so think small. Example : a dagger that never gets dull, a bow that help the user aim, an amulet that makes the user heal a little faster or detect poisons etc.
AMW
When Magi are born they start to release some magical energy. The Empire tracks that energy and finds the mage wherever he/she is.
Parents of a mage are killed as soon as the mage is found. Parents from influential families abandon the child as soon as he is detected having magic to avoid defamation, those that don't suffer a harsh blow to their reputation.
95% of Magi children are killed as soon as they are found. The other 5% are sent to the Citadel, a stronghold prison where they are raised and then confined to magic dampening cells.
Most Magi kill themselves in their cells because they cannot handle the isolation.
The Magi cells are like this : Everything is black inside their cell. The only light that comes in the cell is once per day when food is given to the Magi. The cell itself is empty with no bed and wet floor. There is only one hole in the ground that serves as a toilet that opens up once per day at night.
The only time Magi interact with each other is only when they are chosen to study magic at the library. Only 1% of the Magi are selected to do so every 6 years. The Magi that were selected before are killed and they switch places with the new Magi.
Magi that don't follow orders or become too powerful are killed. They are sent to the Death Row or killed on the spot.
EOT
Magi have been freed from their cells.
Most Magi left the Citadel the moment they were set free
There is still some hatred towards the Magi
Most magic scrolls and artifacts have been sent to the Citadel prior to EOT and 'thus the library/Artifactorium is mostly empty and kept under lock and key.
If any new questions appear, I'll answer them and add them here.
