Location - The Kingdom of Abhainn
Interacting With - Julianna Hardin, Future Queen of Abhainn {@HushedWhispers}; King Jack {@Bishop}; Queen Rhoslyn {@Fabricant451}

He was beginning to feel a slight ache in the small of his back from holding himself rigidly for so very long. But impressions were key, he knew. Maddox's father had made certain that the boy learned that as Prince of Abhainn. Maddox had a role to play, and he would play it for the nobles of Sliabh, and when they left, then he would finally find the time to relax. He was growing sick of this facade.

"I've never even met the woman, and you except me to marry her?" Maddox had pushed the chair back suddenly, rising to his feet as Frederick struggled to stand. "Father, you know that isn't fair!"

"Madd...Madd, you know it isn't about what is fair. You're...you're a grown man!" The old king wheezed slightly as he stood. His health had been obviously failing towards the end, but Maddox had been quite blind to the rapid deterioration of his father. "It's about your kingdom now, not you."

Julianna's voice, light and fluttery, brought him back from his reverie. The blood was beginning to seep into the fabric of her dress, likely staining the expensive material. But she shrugged out of Jack's grip with little effort, bringing a smile back to Maddox as he watched his bride-to-be. "Of course, my lady," he replied, nodding slightly. "I shall show your party to their chambers shortly." As Julianna took a moment to speak with her people, Maddox took note of the Queen as she strode up from her carriage to meet the group of royals.

He had heard rumors of the Black Rose, of her beauty and also of her cunning, but she was all the more captivating in person. She moved with a confidence Maddox hardly saw among the women in his court, but he figured with a husband like Jack, confidence was one of the only things keeping her from a fate similar to that of the ill-fated herald. The way Rhoslyn spoke to Jack made Maddox feel as though he ought not to listen, as though this were something personal and to be left behind closed doors. And yet, he watched dumbly as she scolded him for his behavior.

"A king has the power to choose for himself, Father! I don't need y-"

"But you're not a damned king, Maddox!" Frederick fired back, his hand catching the table sharply, causing Maddox to jump slightly. "You're not a king, you're hardly more than a child." Even in his age, Frederick stood close to Maddox's height. Though stooped slightly, the older man made a still-imposing figure as he came to stand before "You'll make a foolish king carrying on like that. Or perhaps a dead one."

Finished addressing their own problems, Rhoslyn looked back to Maddox again. He met the bow of her head with one of his own, smiling back at her slightly. It had crossed his mind more than once that Jack might not take too kindly to gestures towards his wife.

"Yes, I suppose we shall," he replied, giving a soft laugh as he glanced back at his future bride. "I thank you for your assurances, Your Highness. Abhainn is a beauty, and I would hate to see her...sullied." He found himself naturally turning to look at Jack as he finished speaking, his words trailing off as he made eye contact with the other king. The moment could have ended awkwardly had Jack not begun to speak, sending forth a stream of gifts with a quick snap of his fingers.

The chests bore things of beauty and allure - Maddox couldn't help but find himself captivated by each and every chest that passed him. "They are...they are certainly stunning, King Jack. I do hope to repay these gifts over the course of your stay." And afterwards in the land you'll receive once I wed your sister. But, of course, he left out this final part. They both knew that by now, for certain. He stepped forward slightly, coming to stand directly before Jack. "This peace will benefit our kingdoms greatly, I am certain." It was a weak statement, one that fell flat with so little conviction behind it.

He looked back to his bride afterwards, hopefully ending his conversation with Jack - not that the conversation would continue, as it had likely already fallen flat.

"Yes, er, I shall have my servants show you and your party to their chambers. I look forward to seeing all of you this evening and over the course of the fortnight." He took Julianna's hand once more and gently placed a kiss into her knuckles. "My lady." He spoke to her as he let her hand fall from his grasp. With that, Maddox turned toward the castle, his own coterie following him in suit as servants moved forward to take in the belongings of the foreign party and lead them to their chambers.

As he took his first step, he caught a glimpse of familiar blonde hair, and it suddenly occurred to him that he hadn't seen his brother - until now, at least. His appearance was hardly something befitting a royal, and Maddox couldn't help but furrow his brow in annoyance...until he caught a glimpse of the woman beside William.

Maddox stopped all of a sudden, causing a few nobles to stumble into him as he struggled to get a glimpse of the woman who stood beside his brother. For a moment, he swore...but no, it couldn't be. He shook his head slightly, as though pushing the image from his mind, as he quickened his pace once more and strode towards the castle's entrance.

"You're no good to your people if you care more about yourself than them. I've heard the rumors -
leaving your lessons early to see...harlots. You and your ways are bound shame this family and this damned kingdom."

Julianna Hardin

Location: The Castle of Abhainn
Interacting With: Each Other

Julianna made yet another mental note to grab Aedyn so that she can discuss some matters that have been bothering her as of late. She trusted Aedyn and really felt that it was not a mistake to do so. While the nerves were coming back to her being, she could still feel judging eyes upon her and it was not sitting well within her. She just wanted to marry the King of Abhainn and be Queen, hopefully a good one. Speaking of Queens, Rhoslyn, made her presence known towards King Maddox, who also apologized for her husband's actions so early within their arrival. Julianna honestly felt that Jack should've been apologizing but everyone knew that wasn't going to happen.

Once Rhoslyn started to wipe off whatever blood she could from Julianna's dress, her ears twitched at her words as she could not help but smile. "Why thank you, Queen Rhoslyn." She bowed respectfully towards her. It was then Jack spoke once again and mentioned something about gifts, which he brought from Sliabh. Julianna noticeably rolled her eyes at Jack's display of gifts then looked at King Maddox as he complimented on the gifts.

When Maddox spoke that his servants would escort them towards their rooms, she thanked him with a smile but then gasped whenever he took her hand and placed a kiss upon her knuckles. "Oh, my." She managed to breath out then watched Maddox start to walk away. Once the other nobles started to scatter and such, along with servants moving to do their king's bidding, Julianna walked over towards Keir and smiled. "I'll be in my room shortly. Feel free to pick an outfit out for yourself from my belongings, if you wish."

Aedan had remained silent as Maddox continued to speak to Julianna and Jack. Aedan did somewhat appreciate it when Rhoslyn came forward. He didn't trust the queen, similarly to how he did not trust Jack, but he knew she was already an infinitely better ruler than Jack was, someone cool and calculated, rather than a child throwing an occasional tantrum. When one of the servants approached him, Aedan gave the man a nod and reached up, removing his heavy fur cloak as he handed it over to the man, ready to follow him off to his room as he adjusted his sheathe momentarily.

Once she spoke that, she made her way over to Aedyn, muttering towards him now. "Walk with me?" She questioned towards him as she looped her arm with his, causing a few people to mumble but she knew that there was nothing more going on between them other than a trusted friendship and that's all that matters.

Turning his gaze back over toward Julianna as he heard her voice, Aedan paused as he gave her a nod. "Of course, my lady." He said respectfully, giving another nod to the servant as he watched the man head off to take the furs to his room, he would find it later. For now he simply appreciated having the weight and warmth off his shoulders, he still never enjoyed being so far south, even without his furs the heat was getting to him somewhat, and the day was more mild than it was properly hot.

Feeling Julianna's arm loop with his own, he took his hand gently off his sword and belt and glance over toward her, allowing her to lead as he ignored the muttering of the crowd still watching - eager to get out from under watching eyes, it was one part of being a noble he had not gotten used to. "What did you need of me, my lady?" He asked, still speaking to Julianna often as though he were still only a knight, and not a lord, at least until the wedding - of almost equal rank and stature to her.

When Aedyn asked what she needed of him, she shrugged her shoulders while looking down at the ground beneath the both of them. Julianna let out a soft sigh before lifting her head up and her eyes averted over towards him now. "Not sure if it is the nerves or what but I don't feel very safe here." She admitted in a whispered tone, one only Aedyn could hear. "I need you close by, at all times, Aedyn. I feel safer whenever you're close by and plus, I trust you." Julianna mentioned towards him as she stopped in her tracks and continued to look right at him.

Aedan nodded his head softly as she spoke, idly glancing around as he moved along with her. In a way he was not surprised that she did not feel safe, he didn't particularly. For many years they had been at war with the Abhainnians, and Aedan still thought it quite likely that this so-far temporary peace could be thrown into disaster once more. He hoped he was wrong, that the Abhainnians truly wished peace just as much as the Slibahns, but he figured all that could be done was to wait and see. He turned his gaze toward her briefly as she spoke again, nodding his head once. "You flatter me, my lady - I'll stand ready whenever you need me." He assured her, unable to help his tone - speaking more like a soldier than a noble at that moment.

"Is there any reason you have been quiet thus far?" Julianna asked as she even smiled towards him. "No need to be so serious right now." She teased him slightly while giving him a small nudge on the shoulder as she was trying to loosen him up a bit.

Aedan halted for a moment as she questioned him on his silence, neutral expression remaining even as she smiled and nudged him. He considered her comment. For the most part, he had been wary, similar to how she had said - he did not truly trust many of the Abhainnians, and having fought against them for so many years, it felt strange to now be walking the halls of their castle, and preparing for a wedding. "Just a soldier's nerves, my lady." He answered simply, deciding not to burden her with his thoughts. "Though, the southern weather doesn't help." He jested quietly, offering the slightest hint of a smile for only a moment or two, before his face turned neutral once more.

Talking with Aedyn made her feel a little bit better, to be honest. It's nice to have someone be there for her whenever her nerves got the best of her and she was happy that it was Aedyn in this moment. Julianna nodded her head at his response towards her question about him being quiet and could not help but chuckle towards him after his other comment. "Well, I guess we better go and get ready for tonight's celebration, huh?" Julianna said as they made in within the doorway of Abhainn's castle.

Bowing his head somewhat as she suggested they move to get ready, Aedan moved to gently clasp his hands behind his back, stopping in the doorway as he looked over toward her. He had concerns over how safe Julianna would be in the long run. While he was there, he was able to protect her, and he would certainly do so - but in time he would return home, and he could do no more. It had been one of his promises to the late king of Sliabh - to protect Julianna for as long as he was able. Now it seemed that was beginning to come to an end, and it troubled Aedan.

She leaned over towards Aedyn, giving him a brief hug then held onto his shoulders while looking into his eyes. "Thanks for making me feel better, Aedyn. I truly appreciate having you around." Julianna mentioned towards him with a soft smile to follow her words. She really did enjoy her moment with Aedyn though and hoped that he could feel that vibrating from her.

Somewhat caught off-guard by the hug, Aedan only shifted his hands to his sides, not properly returning the hug as she spoke, eyes watching hers as he'd give her a nod. "There's no need to thank me, my lady." He said with another gentle nod, unsure how else to really reply. As their conversation ceased, he let her head off first, taking a moment or two to himself as he glanced back outside, briefly resting his palm upon the pommel of his sword. He stood there for a moment or two, thinking, before he sighed and turned, heading for the room he'd had prepared for him.

"See you at the celebration." Was all she left Aedyn with before waltzing away from him and heading towards her room, which was specially prepared for her. She did wonder to herself if her lady-in-waiting, Keir, was in her room and picking out an outfit like she had requested earlier or was Keir in her own room, getting ready. Julianna shrugged the thoughts away as two guards surrounded her now and escorted her towards her room.

The skies above the palace of Abhainn have finally turned a certain color to signify that nightfall was definitely upon them. While many were already making their way towards the ballroom for the celebration, others were putting the finishing touches on their outfits and even masks. Yes, masks because the celebration was a masquerade ball and the excitement that filled the air was one of a kind. Most people did not know who was who but isn't that part of the fun when it comes to wearing a mask? If one did not bring a mask or simply needed one, there was a table set up not too far from the ballroom that was filled with them. Inside of the ballroom there were at least five tables were set up, three full of certain foods while the other two had goblets of wine scattered upon them. Nobles alike from Abhainn and nations nearby were more than invited to attend the ball, which is a celebration to further unite King Maddox and Julianna closer together of some sorts. The room was starting to fill up with masked people as the hired masked dancers entertained the guests for a moment.

Julianna had released Keir from her duties so that she could go to her own room and get ready for the celebration. Thoughts of hers and Aedyn's discussion filled her mind now as she wondered what he was wearing to the celebration, since the weather was somewhat bothersome towards him. Being pulled away from her thoughts, some of Abhainn's servants knocked and entered her chambers as she turned to face them, eying them as they bowed respectfully before her. In one's hand, she held a box while another held a smaller box that resembled the bigger box. Julianna's eyebrow rose up with curiosity as she parted her lips and spoke towards the three servants that stood before her. "What's in those boxes?" She pointed her index finger towards the boxes whenever she spoke those words. One servant stepped forth and placed the bigger box down in front of Julianna now. "Present from the King." The servant muttered as the other two bowed and another servant presented Julianna with a small box and inside of it contained a mask.

"You ladies may go." She muttered towards the servants as she waved them away. Julianna did not know how to feel about these gifts since they were for the celebration, which she just found out that it was a masquerade ball. Her eyes averted towards the mirror as she caught the look of her own face, a slight smirk began to form among the corner of her lips. It wasn't exactly fair for Maddox to dress Julianna for the night since he would know who she was but she wouldn't have the slightest idea who he was. Julianna wanted to play along with everyone else attending the ball so instead of placing Maddox's gifts, she called for her servants to come back in and help her get dress.

Her body was adorned with a pinkish red dress and her hair was braided into a ponytail as her ears had pink colored earrings lodged into her earlobes. She smiled a little bit then looked over herself as the servants helped her bathe and dress looked at Julianna with widened eyes and expressions. "You look absolutely stunning, my lady." One of the servants said as Julianna thanked her with a nod of approval. She had sent one servant towards the ballroom and get her a mask off of the table, which she did so successfully. Grabbing the mask, she thanked the servant then placed the mask upon her face and she gasped along with the servants.

Turning heel away from the mirror, she released her servants then shortly after they left, she opened up her chamber doors and saw two guards standing beside her door. "Well, gentlemen, escort me towards the ballroom, please." Julianna spoke towards the two guards, who nodded towards her as one walked ahead of her while the other walked a few paces behind her. The closer she got towards the ballroom, her nerves were settling in. She muttered for the guards to stop at least three times before they turned a corner and there she was, standing within the doorway that lead into the ballroom.

A smile formed and plastered her face now as she walked further inside of the room, ears twitched at the lively music the musicians were playing and a chuckle vibrated from her at the dancers that were dancing. Julianna had no idea who was who so she just decided to waltz over towards the table, where the goblets of wine were and picked one up and took a sip from it. Luckily for herself, Julianna was no longer nervous because she really had no right to be as no one knew who she was. She continued to stand by the table and sip from her goblet while waiting for someone to approach her and ask for dance or just to simply converse with her.

Location; The Kingdom of Abhainn
Interacting With; Sir Chester (NPC), Jetta (NPC), Future Queen Julianna Hardin(@HushedWhispers)

Drops of sweat fell from Alice's sore, overworked arms, and from her various spots along her face and chest. Though the sword still feels, per usual, as an extension of her arm, the weight became more apparent as the harsh sparring would continue. The room grew silent from grunts and the clashing of their blades, save for the panting that the two, Chester and Alice, were releasing endlessly. It was only after a few short rounds that Alice finally seized the match,"Stop!". Alice dropped her arm to her side and proceeded to the servant that stood in the same, presentable position for the entirety of the long match holding out a small towel for Alice's use. Alice grabbed the towel and patted the sweat from her body, finally releasing her grip from the, now heavy, longsword to give it to the servant.

"Are you alright, Lady Alice?" Chester questioned from the other end of the room as he dealt with his equipment,"You were fighting more -- forcefully, than you usually would. Something on your mind?"

Alice winced as she removed her worn gloves, eying her shaking, rough hands to see the familiar blisters and calluses that became more severe from the match that seemed to have lasted all day,"I was merely just letting out some built-up anger. It is nothing, Sir Chester, you need not worry." She began to stretch out her fingers to try to bring back the usual comfort of her hands while exiting with a smile and a sincere voice,"Thank you for the match, but we'll have to save the conversation for next time -- I'm late."

"Wait!" Sir Chester exclaimed abruptly as Alice halted and looked over her shoulder to Sir Chester. He continued, hesitantly, with a stern, yet heartfelt tone,"I heard she returned -- I heard Lady Amaryllis has-."

"Yes, she is back. I'm not sure for how long, but what you heard is correct," Alice interrupted coldly,"Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get ready for the 'celebration'." Alice emphasized celebration, indicating her disinterest in the event and what it commemorates.

Alice proceeded to her room to prepare for the celebration that was explained to be a masquerade. Her mind trailed to Sir Chester and the history they shared, containing nothing more than just sparring and a trusted friendship. It was proven that Sir Chester still remembered the feud Alice and Amaryllis indulged in, and that word travels fast in this kingdom. During the dramatic time of the rivalry, Alice expressed many of her opinions to both Jetta, her maid, and Sir Chester, her sparring partner. Though Sir Chester doesn't know the majority of the details, he still is well-aware that the relationship between the two ladies was a very hostile one -- primarily on Alice's side.

Alice finally reached her room in which Jetta, and a few other maids were running around to perform any last-minute alterations. Thread, fabric, and clothes scattered along the bed, and an abundance of makeup was laid out on the vanity. Jetta looked relieved that Alice finally returned to her chambers,"You're going to be late, my lady!"

Alice sat rather insensibly at her vanity and let the flustering maids tend to her as they usually would, occasionally looking into the mirror to see what look they were giving her; an even skin-tone, light blush and eyeliner, and a dash of shimmer along her cheekbones. Her hair, left curly and natural, but brushed carefully to let it fall nicely. She didn't doubt their abilities, but she always loved to see the process. In this moment, Alice let her mind ease by taking a few deep breaths, trusting in their great ability to beautify her appearance, but seeming to have increasing apathy towards the rest of the night. Alice was rushed to get ready, though she still looked just as spectacular had they had more time. She slipped on a black and red dress that was embroidered with beautiful lace patterns that had an alluring, revealing concept. Alice paired the dress with a matching mask that had mild traces of glitter and a lovely design. Alice was sure to give her maids a kind thank you, though she didn't dwell long enough to really admire herself and have her regular vain moment.

Alice was soon welcomed into a beautifully decorated ballroom full of a plethora food, beverages, and unfamiliar faces, causing a small, foreign feeling of anxiety to form in the pit of her stomach. Amidst the boastful crowd, the clinking of dishes and glasses, and the servants already rushing to maintain a comfortable and cheerful environment, there was a recognizable woman dressed in pink that formed a faint expression of distaste. The figure was none other than the future queen -- elegant, youthful, and stunning. Alice took a confident deep breath before approaching her slowly, dismissing her rising disdain to properly execute a pleasant conversation, hoping to befriend the woman for the sake of any future schemes.

Alice performed a sincere, respectful curtsy as she greeted the future queen,"It seems as though you've made quite the entrance, your majesty." With the vague statement, it could imply that her beauty stunned the Abhainnians, or King Jack's hostile act devastated them instead. Alice lifted herself from the curtsy to stand in with good posture, adjusting her flowing, curling hair to fall over her shoulder. "I suppose the rumors are very true, your beauty does exceed the already high expectations we had," Alice complimented,"I do hope that Abhainn is welcoming you to your liking. We definitely do not want to disappoint."

Alice reached over for a glass of red wine that was laid out, taking a sip from the beautiful chalice before a rush of memories entered her mind from the familiar taste. The wine was one of the finest of Abhainn, one in particular that was fond of Alice and Lady Amaryllis from commonly drinking it with her now-enemy. Alice blinked rapidly for a second to bring herself back to the conversation,"So how do you like your new home in comparison to Slibah?"

Location; Abhainn's Ballroom
Interacting With; Eachother

A ball, a celebration. Candles were lit, keeping the cold night beyond the windows. Food was being served at a constant pace. A great many people were dancing around. Others were laughing with a glass of wine in their hand. Instead of the common, harsh leathers and tunics mostly worn outside the castle people now wore colorful doubles and absolutely stunning dresses. Much like anything in the noble world, the celebration became a competition. Who could out-dance the other? Who could boast with the strongest story? Who could conquer a kiss from the most beautiful maiden? The mood was filled with happiness. Everyone was genuinely enjoying themselves. Even the musicians on their stage.

William had spent quite a bit of time in front of a mirror in his own room. He could easily hear the laughing and music from the hall. As he stood there, trying on doublet after doublet he quickly started to realize he disliked all of them. Hard leather and strong spun cotton were more his thing. The soft, red wool felt foreign. He could count the times he had to wear it on one hand. One, particular moment stood out. The funeral of his father. Now he had to wear it to celebrate his brother’s betrothal. And β€˜had to’ was very much the word to be used if you asked him. If he could choose, he would just have jumped ship. Maybe go hunting again. He was toying with the idea for quite some time in his room, trying on different clothes. The stewards would be more than displeased for sure if he ran away that night. But displeasing the stewards was becoming a bit of a hobby these days. Then he thought of Amaryllis. It would be unfair for the girl, no woman, to leave her like that amongst the people. He reckoned he could ask her forgiveness with a fox-pelt cloak. But still, it would be unfair. The final reason was the one that made him stay though. His brother. He saw the look on Maddox’s face near the carriages. His outfit displeased his older brother. So here he was, standing in front of a mirror, looking like a fool. Looking like some minor noble. Hell, not even that. He was noticeably devoid of any gold or silver jewelry. Instead opting for a his wolf-fang necklace.

Then he went and waited in front of the great doors of the hall for Amaryllis. An awkward time for him. He never waited for anything. Mostly the wind carried him around. And now the wind wanted to carry him out beyond the castle walls. But he willed him to stay, to wait for Lady Amaryllis, holding his mask in hands. Some loved the idea of a masquerade. Being hidden in plain sight. But William had no intention to hide himself. In rebellious defiance he had made his mask a long time ago. It left the space around his mouth and chin open. The mask itself was made, outward, of harsh, crude bark. With even some moss still on it. The side of the mask were two, smaller antlers he found during one of his numerous hunts. All-in-all, he looked very much like a creature from the forest with it. Few who knew of him wouldn’t immediately realize it was William.

Getting ready had not been an easy task for Amaryllis. She had spent far too long hung up over which dress she should wear - if she were to follow the usual attire for such celebrations then she would opt for a delicate, full-skirted gown set with embroidery and jewels the like. But instead, she found her hands hovering over a silken black middle-Eastern dress. It had been a gift to her from some foreign lord, something that she had never cast a second glance towards, but now it called to her; the flowing skirt made it seem as if she were shrouded in midnight, and the golden pieces set in brightened her look from one of mourning to one of mystery. Some would say that the dress was somewhat revealing - that no lady would dare wear that to such a formal event, but it was Lissa's own small act of rebellion. She may not be able to openly express her distaste towards the marriage, but it was the small things like this that would make her opinion clear.

And so she allowed Clarice to tend to her hair and cosmetics - the final result was one she approved of greatly. She kept her face as bare from makeup as possible, bar the painting of black and gold around her eyes to create a cunning, feline look; and her hair was left loose and cascading down her back, adorned with a headpiece set with intricate gold medallions and an ivory veil. Lissa almost chuckled as she watched Clarice run her fingers over the material of the veil, the two taking a moment to marvel over the irony of it.

"It is perfect, Clarice. Thank you." It was rare for Amaryllis to thank anyone - never mind servants - so genuinely, so the maid's beaming smile surprised her little. The fleeting glimpse of her sentimentality was over in a matter of seconds, however, as she stood up from her vanity and walked to the door. She was already late, as was apparent in the loud music already playing in the hall that could be heard from all the way up in her room. It was fashionable to be late, she assured herself, as the door was opened for her by one of her guards. Offering him a small smile, she looked down at herself once more - ensuring that everything was perfect - before leaving her room, leaving nothing but the faint scent of her sweet perfume in her wake.

It was a relief to see that William was still waiting for her when she arrived at the doors, and Lissa allowed herself to relax. Her fluid composure righted itself, except for her hands which were now clasping and unclasping in a nervous gesture - through which anyone looking closely enough would realise that she was far more anxious than she would like anyone to think. Such was apparent in the tightness of her stomach, which she was now trying her best to ignore as she stopped a short distance away from the Prince and swept low into a graceful curtesy.

"Good evening your grace. I must apologise for my tardiness - on a night such as this, of course I have to be running late." She chuckled lightly, her eyes briefly running over what the prince was wearing before returning to his face with a warm smile. As handsome as he appeared, it seemed as if William was not as comfortable as he had been when they had first reunited - it was a feeling that she could not help but share with him.

She was taking her time, that William knew. There were few people in the castle William would wait for. But Amaryllis was now one of them. Even though he didn’t really like it. Every minute allowed his mind to wander further. It walked through the woods, yelled off the cliffs and showed him the world beyond the walls. Yet here he still was, waiting. Every now and then a couple passed him, entering the hall. Greeting him in a courteous manner before they continued on their way. But William knew that the courtesy was mostly a faΓ§ade. He is not a part of them. He’s not like they are. After quite some time, William was on the edge of changing. Impatient as he was, he wouldn’t mind the evil eye he would get from Maddox. His brother probably knew by now. But then Amaryllis appeared.

There is very little in the world that could take away William’s breath. He thought that none of it could be found in the castle. But when he saw his childhood friend, dressed the way she was, he was absolutely stunned. So much even, that when she apologized for her lateness, William had to gather his thoughts before he could speak. She was beautiful, wonderful. Mysterious like the midnight sky and as enchanting as the full moon. It was then that William knew their joined plan would succeed. Maddox would not be able to take his eyes off Amaryllis. What man could!? She would make every lady inside look like a common fish-wife! Immediately William regretted not having anything to offer such a beautiful lady anything.

β€œMy lady…” he had to take a moment still to choose the right words. β€œI-I assure you. You do not need to apologize.” He didn’t really know anything about being fashionably late.

William’s mind grasped for the few bits of socializing he knew. Most of it came from books. So not knowing any better, he took her left hand in his, lifted it up and gently kissed the back side. β€œWith you, I now believe this celebration might even be pleasant.” He said with a smile, turning to stand next to her, hooking his arm in hers. β€œShall we then?” He said, putting on his own mask.

Despite her composure, it still made Amaryliss flush to see William so flustered. What was wrong with her?! She was not a silly little girl anymore! She would show everyone that she was poised, composed and the true definition of a lady. No giggling or blushing and certainly no dancing.

Of course, when the Prince happened to take her hand to plant a gentle kiss on it, all of those rules flew out the window and she found herself dimpling. She had not been treated with this much affection since, well...since she first met her husband. He had showered her with gifts and he had been the true meaning of a gentleman - up until their wedding night.

Pushing back the dark thoughts, Amaryllis gladly took the Prince's arm and together they walked towards the hall. In all honesty, she despised masquerades. It was a celebration for fools, she had told herself many times. You didn't need to see someone's face in order to recognise them! You could easily do so with their clothing, with the way they were standing, or even the mask itself. Nevertheless, she still couldn't help but feel a thrill as she fit her own mask against her eyes and blinked a few times.

It was a simple thing - one that only covered the area around her eyes with gold, in a pattern that would only resemble dragon scales. Well, at least to her it could. She knew for a fact that she was still very much recognisable in the mask, but she would not have it any other way. She had been right when it came to knowing who people were despite the masks, of course. She could already spot a ridiculously stunning gown at the other end of the ballroom - one that made her look down at herself and frown - and didn't need to even guess who it belonged to. And the familiar figure next to the future queen had to be Lady Alice with her love for dramatic deep reds. Lissa almost stopped in a moment of confusion as she watched the two women converse - Alice had not been Julianna's chief admirer, that much was clear earlier on - so what had changed? The thoughts were simply brushed aside, however, as Lissa held onto William just a fraction tighter; a subconscious movement that went hand-in-hand with her twisting nerves.

Glancing sideways as they walked, Lissa finally registered the mask that the prince was wearing and allowed a brief smile to grace her features. Of course his would be from the forest, she didn't expect anything else. It was only as they came to a stop at the edge of the dance space that Amaryllis spoke, this time slightly leaning into William to ensure that he could hear her over the music.

"Your mask suits you, William." It was a simple compliment to anyone else that happened to be listening, but she hoped that he would see that it meant so much more. She approved of his rebellion and was there to stand with him against this marriage whenever he may need it.

Location - Royal Chambers --> Abhainn's Ballroom
Interacting With - Lady Amaryllis {@Filthy Mudblood} & Prince William Pengrace {@Legion02}

It took him a great while to shake off the nobles who tagged along after him, but by the time Maddox reached his chambers, he simply bid the stragglers a good day and closed the door far more forcefully than he had initially intended. Sealed in his chambers now, Maddox gave a soft sigh and pushed himself away from the door. Everything seemed to grow overwhelming, all of a sudden - the collar of his doublet scratched against his neck, the fire in the hearth made the room far too warm, the nobles outside bickered too loudly with the guards who turned them away - and he couldn't stand it. His fingers fumbled with the buttons on the front of his doublet, attempting to pull it open as his frustration began to bubble over.

The doublet half-way unbuttoned, he threw his arms up slightly and then buried his head in his hands. It had been a disaster, that meeting between his future wife and him. None of the reports from his advisers had prepared him for the rival king's actions. And now he was damned to be stuck in a marriage with some mad king's sister.

Maddox moved across the room to the decanter of wine on a side table. But Julianna seemed nice enough, beautiful enough. He couldn't drink the wine fast enough to sate his thirst, and he poured another goblet of it almost as soon as he had downed the first. There was nothing he could do about it without inciting a war. Neither Julianna nor Jack would take it well, and so he was stuck with nowhere to go.

And why the sudden doubt in the first place, he wondered? Certainly, that hadn't been Lissa there - after all of these years. And yet, couldn't it have been?

A knock on his door interrupted his thoughts. "Enter," he replied, finishing his drink before placing the goblet down. A wave of attendants entered, ready to ensure he still looked his best for the evening's festivities. He had such little interest in dealing with the foreigners, but perhaps he would have time to drink himself under a table and forget that in a fortnight he would be married off to a woman he hardly knew.

By the time he had been dressed in brilliant golds and black, he had imbibed further, bringing his head to a gentle swimming feeling. Perhaps he had over done it, but he was a king after all. He had no one to be accountable to. His final touch was to tie the mask around his head before he moved towards the door.

It was quite a walk down the hallway to get to the ballroom, but he made it there all the same. His entrance was met with a fair amount of fanfare and an introduction from the herald who had been stationed to read off names. Maddox couldn't help but wonder if the poor sod from earlier would have been stationed there this evening had he not been murdered that afternoon.

Starting down the steps, he scanned the room and his guests. William was the first he noticed, but he certainly had to do a double take to recognize him, groomed and looking quite, well, proper. But then he had to double take once more as he noticed his brother's mask, if it could be called that. Stumbling down the last step, Maddox started towards his brother, his mouth pulled into an expression of distaste.

"William, I don't know what -" he hissed, coming to a stop next to his brother. But he cut himself off as he noticed the woman standing beside his brother, garbed in a revealing, black gown. "My lady, I apologize, if I -" Maddox cut himself off once more as he stopped to truly take her appearance in.

"You..." he started before drifting off. Could it have been her after all of these years? It had been so long since he had seen Lissa, perhaps he was only hoping to see her now, in the midst of this chaos. "Excuse me, my lady, I...you reminded me of someone..."

Prince Antoine
Location: Guest chambers β†’ Abhainn's ballroom.
Interacting with: King Maddox Auclair @Scarlet Loup; Prince William @Legion02; Lady Amaryllis @Filthy Mudblood; Lady Julianna (mentioned) @HushedWhispers.

It was almost cruel, in a way: looking out the window from his guest chambers, Antoine found there was so much about Abhainn that struck similar to Slibah, yet there was so much that was starkly different. No matter how much he tried to focus on the horizon, to try and measure and identify the differences between the peaks and valleys, his attention always wandered back to the commoners. Out in the distance, naked flames atop torches dotted about as the peasantry secured their lands for the night, while the merchants and better-off carried about the city to celebrate the royal marriage in their own way.
"Off to the inn, no doubt..." Antoine thought out loud, with one foot crossed over the other knee and his chin resting atop a fist. With the thought of the royal marriage and the celebartions, his thoughts wandered to the next event on the itinerary: the masquerade ball, as hosted by none other than the King of Abhainn. A gentle scowl formed on his face as his thoughts were guided back to harsher things: there would no doubt that word of Jack's actions would have spread throughout the King's courtiers, and if the King truly intended to sabotage the royal marriage, the masquerade would be an excellent time to do it.

Antoine let out a gentle sigh as he twisted about, standing from his chair to step towards the mirror. Looking at the reflection of himself, bare for all bar undergarments, he didn't see much. It was just him, after all - the very same person he had woken up to for his whole life. While he continued to look, his thoughts were not with the image before him. He had every intention to become the King of Slibah one day, whether it be through patience or intrigue. His thoughts returned to the peasantry in the fields and the merchants in the streets: he imagined them in battle ranks, clutching spears in hand at the front of an Abhainn Army. That would more than likely be their place in a war; need not mention, it would likely be their last place. Antoine let out a tired sigh as the thought occurred to him: compared to that image, intrigue almost seemed like a mercy.

With a slap to his own face and a mouthful of water, Antoine centered his thoughts. His father would no doubt be scheming how he could ruin the masquerade and his mother would no doubt be scheming how to control the damage. His parents may scold him for not arriving with them - a particular risk in itself where his father is considered - although they could be forgiven for forgetting about him, with the weight of recent events considered. He lifted both his hands to his face and pulled down on his cheeks; the core of it all is that if he wanted to have any sort of political clout, he needed friends, and that went double if he was to have any part in averting a war. The King and future Queen of Abhainn would definitely be the people to have a good impression with by the end of the masquerade, although the odds were certainly against him...

Almost as if blowing out a candle, Antoine switched from swift reflection to snatching up his trousers for the night. After sitting the waistband snug about his waist, he creaked the door open:
"Ah-" he began, interrupted when his eyes fell on the two servants. "I'm terribly sorry, I did not realize I had kept you both waiting." He pulled open the door as he continued: "Please, come in. I'd like a hand with my attire, if you'd please."

The longer Antoine lingered in the ballroom, moving from circle to circle, the more anxious he felt. The nobles were skeptical of Slibah and, as much as he hated to admit it, for fair enough reason. While it was his intention to arrive early, he couldn't help but feel he got there too early; he had yet to sight either the future Queen or the King, both of which were his prime marks for the evening. It was just then, as the thought came to him, that the arrival of Lady Julianna was announced. Antoine's head craned, quickly seeking out the new arrival before his feet set into quick motion. Navigating through the crowd, let alone with courtesy, was a difficult task in and of itself. By the time he drew near, he sighted another starting a conversation with her.
"It seems as though you've made quite the entrance, your majesty." the woman began, greeting the future Queen with a curtsy. Antoine watched for a moment, contemplating whether or not be should approach, before the fanfare sung announcing the arrival of another. His eyes shifted to the staircase, at which he spotted his other mark for the night: the King of Abhainn. After a moment of thought, he pressed any creases out of his doublet before moving to meet the King.

As Antoine approached the King, who was already in conversation, he slowed his pace to listen to the tail end:
"Excuse me, my lady, I...you reminded me of someone..." the King explained, to the vague interest of Antoine. It appeared he was too slow: both the King and Queen were already in conversation, so perhaps he'd have to wait. His glance shifted over to the Prince of Abhainn - definitely somebody he had intended to avoid, knowing his thoughts on Slibah, although perhaps while he was with his father...

Antoine approached the small gathering, his white crescent mask sitting in suite with his black and white formal attire.
"Not a bad time I hope, your majesty?" Antoine asked as he approached the King and his circle, coming to a halt with a curt bow. He continued to speak after he rose:
"Prince Antoine, of Slibah. I understand congratulations are in order - for both your wedding and this lovely masquerade." His attention moved next to Prince William, to which he offered another bow. "And Prince William - I believe I haven't had the pleasure..." Finally, his gaze settled on the last in the circle - Lady Ward, who he had yet to meet. "...nor have we, my lady." Yet a third time, he bowed forward to introduce himself, although this time he attempted to gently take her hand to press a kiss to her knuckles - although, if there were a sign of retraction or hesitation, he'd make his best attempt to play it into a standard bow: whether it be awkwardly or not.

Location: Her Chambers --> Lady Julia's Chambers --> The Masquerade
Interacting With: Lady Julia {@HushedWhispers-mentioned}

Keir would have been hesitant to leave her Lady's side so soon, but she knew that she would be in good hands with Lord Aedan. She hoped the matters that they had to discuss were not too serious in nature. The atmosphere surrounding their arrival already felt too heavy and who among the observers could disagree after the spectacle to which everyone was exposed.

Her escort took Keir to her own room first, and at Keir's insistence, showed her the way to Lady Julia's room from there. She used the trip to start memorizing the layout of her new abode--at least for the time being. Her own quarters weren't too far off and they were far from bare. Even when she stayed at court, Keir did not live with so much finery around her. Then again, she did not actually stay in the royal palace for the majority of her time with Lady Julia. Her family had been granted an estate near the palace like all the other lords and ladies when her they were given the title. Of course, the Farren Estate wasn't as vast or as well decorated as all the others, but you couldn't find finer gardens save at the palace.

She'd brought few evening gowns of her own. Her family's allowance hadn't raised so much that they could spend wantonly, but luckily for her, Lady Julia was a kind and sharing soul and always humbled Keir with a pick from her wardrobe for many an occasion. It was a fine collection, to say the least, but what else could one expect from a future queen? Keir had searched through some before giving up and deciding on a bath first. Her thick locks always took an inordinate amount of time to dry so best to get it out of the way early. After a good soak and scrub to rid herself of the invisible layer of filth she had felt settle with being so close to the gruesome scene, Keir felt much more refreshed and ready to face the evening.

Her feelings were a bit split on the revelation that this gathering was to be a masquerade. On the one hand, this was a great boon for Keir. Whereas the company she walked among had been raised into this life, Keir was still learning the finer points to being a lady in high society. It had been a slow and painful assimilation for her thus far and she still had some ways to go; she still remained quite awkward in many interactions. On the other hand, this means that unless someone could tell whom she was, she would be free of any judgment or ridicule on behalf of any faux pas she committed. She decided to go with boon.

To embrace her new anonymous role in society, she opted to leave her hair down for the evening rather than tidying it away from her face as was her custom. Now she just needed to find something to wear before she could complete the ensemble. As she retraced the steps she took earlier in the day to Lady Julia's room, she wondered if she had already left for the party. It was for her, after all, and it wouldn't do for her to miss the festivities and her curious guests--how could they not be curious about their incumbent queen? She gave a gentle knock on the chamber doors as she arrived but heard no response. She gave a second louder knock in case she hadn't been heard the first time. Still no response.

Keir pushed the door open slowly now and spoke out as she did. "My Lady Julia? I've come to pick out a dress..." She trailed off as she entered the room fully, seeing no one inside. She knew her attendants had been in here earlier, but perhaps they were off to spy on the party now that their patroness was off--as they were want to do. Pushing the door closed behind her, Keir decided that she could finish changing in here after he selection. As she turned back, two large shapes and bright colors caught her attention at the periphery of her vision. Turning fully to face them, she saw two boxes. They almost looked like presents.

Keir's mouth dropped slightly as she peered inside the boxes; it was a gown and matching mask. A thought occurred which made her most pleased. She moved forward now to look for a note, but found none. With further investigation of the room, Keir found all the telltale signs that her ladyship had come, bathed, dressed, and gone. For whom else could the boxes be? It seemed clear to her that Lady Julia had played an unfair but most loving trick on Keir when she'd told her she could pick out a dress but had a gift prepared all along. Perhaps she retrieved the mask in the time between their arrival and Lady Julia's departure for the party. That had to be it. Somehow Keir made all the puzzle pieces work, and of course, Lady Julia was so generous with Keir that it was completely within the realm of possibility in her mind.

She couldn't debate it another moment and immediately set out to putting on the lovely velvet purple dress with gold trimmings. It flowed beautifully around her and fit quite well, though the top dipped down a bit lower than Keir usually liked, but no matter. She gasped as she pulled the mask from the smaller box. She loved the curves and the colors and she hoped that those stones she saw laid in it were purely decorative. She could never pay Lady Julia back for such a lavish gift. After donning her disguise, a little color for her lips was due; another habit she did not generally practice except when required. Tonight certainly required it. She decided to go with a lovely violet to match her garb.

Her ensemble complete, she took one last look in the standing mirror before making her way to the ballroom. She was ecstatic with anticipation. Of course Lady Julia would recognize her since she picked the outfit out, but Keir did not mind if she knew. In fact, she preferred it. As she entered the ballroom, she stopped the announcer as he was about to say something and motioned for him to stay quiet. She descended the stairs to the floor below, searching faces in the crowd for any signs of familiarity or any signs of recognition from others.

Aedan Merryn

Location: Guestroom -> Abhainn's Ballroom
Interacting With: Me, Myself and I

Aedan had sat by the window in his time waiting for the ball, staring out into the castle's training grounds below as time went on. He had removed his tunic as the heat of it had begun to bother him, but had yet to change into the outfit he would be wearing to the ball, much more a soldier's uniform than a noble's garb. But then again, Aedan was much more a soldier than a lord anyway. For now, it sat on a mannequin and had been left there alongside the mask. He'd allowed a servant to pick the mask, not particularly being one for parties where they were needed, but he found himself regretting it - a look at the mask and anyone would know who was beneath it - The Lionheart.

Aedan loathed the name, he loathed titles such as that in general, among soldiers they were often earned, they had meaning. He had never greatly minded when he'd heard his men casually refer to him as such, or other officers among his station use it in passing, but it was never considered much more than what it was - a name. Aedan had learned quickly that this was not the case of such names in noble court, they were weapons, used to beat anyone and everyone around over the head with until there was a clear understanding of who was deserving of more honour and praise.

Sighing, Aedan shook his head and turned his gaze back away from the outfit, back towards the training yards as his eyes drifted between those fighting, soldiers training with all sorts of weapons, archers practicing with bows, even a woman - he figured a noble lady, though he had not noticed her when he had arrived, practicing with the sword. Under any other circumstance he would have happily spent his time down in the yard training with those there, but given his reputation, he figured the training yards were the last place anyone in Abhainn wanted him, he doubted indeed that he would be received warmly.

Moving to stand, he turned back toward the Mannequin and walked over to it, looking over the coat as he went to retrieve a shirt, placing it on and beginning to lace it up. He made no effort to call for a servant, and had turned away the servants who brought the outfit to him in the first place. There was something... Odd to Aedan about being dressed or 'readied' by others, he doubted he would ever allow such a thing, for him it far too well reflected the loss that came with nobility. He had once been told, and he knew many nobles believed that their rank meant they could do anything - in Aedan's mind, the higher you went, the less freedom you had. Unfortunately - it was also harder to get into an outfit with a hundred buckles and straps with only one set of hands.

By the time Aedan was ready, the masquerade had begun. Sighing as he placed the lion mask over his face, he moved to the desk of his room, reaching out toward his sheathed blade. He halted for a moment, it had been instinct for him to reach for it, to wish to carry it with him even to a celebration of sorts. He felt naked without it, but he fought the urge to take up the blade, trying not to cause perhaps a diplomatic incident as he sighed, turning back towards the door of his room and pushing it open, moving down the halls toward the ballroom.

It did not take him long to find it, the sounds of music, cheers and chatter carried through the halls like a siren's song luring him nearer. As he reached the hall, he sighed as he took in a breath, moving into the room as he glanced around, immediately taking a goblet of wine from a nearby servant as he took a long drink. His eyes flicked through the crowd, meeting the occasional glancing or watching eye, and many faces he did not know. He felt as though he was trapped, and had to remind himself again that this was no longer 'enemy territory'. Sighing, Aedan slinked toward a quieter corner of the room, briefly catching Julianna's eye, as he gave her a nod, more to let her know he was present, than anything.

Amaryllis was just beginning to relax, just starting to let herself melt into the beat of the music when a frighteningly familiar voice pulled her out of it. Why was it frightening? Because she had replayed that voice over and over in her head for the past six years, witnessing first hand how it faded away into a whisper of memory. But now it was here. And it belonged to someone standing right in front of her. And that someone was talking to her.

To be frank, Lissa had played this moment in her mind again and again, coming up with different scenarios of how they would meet, reunite and embrace. Of course, it would always end in the same thing, but it was only now that she realised that it was impossible for that to ever happen. Stupid. She had planned to be graceful, charming and, well, in control - but now all she could do was stand and stare at King Maddox, almost clinging on to William for dear life. It was after a few agonising moments that Amaryllis finally managed to pull herself out of the state of shock she had seemed to be frozen in, only to replace the silence with ridiculous stammering.

"I...um - well... I don't -" Thankfully, she cut herself off before she could do any more damage. If he didn't recognise her before, then what was he going to think now? This moment was supposed to be perfect - the reunion she had come all this way for! And now she was letting it slip through her fingers like sand. Maybe it was the mask? She should go somewhere, take it off and then come back. Start again. Yes, that was a good idea.

Standing up a little straighter, looking uncharacteristicly flustered, Lissa let out a deep sigh and finally looked him in the eyes while letting a small, embarrassed smile grace her features. She was just opening her mouth to excuse herself when another voice made itself known in what could now be identified as a group. Lissa almost sagged in relief as her gaze flitted away from the King to a vaguely familiar face addressing the circle one by one.

Her jaw involuntarily clenched at the mention of the marriage, but she replaced the grimace with a friendly smile aimed towards the Slibahan Prince in a mere moment. She had heard his name here and there during her time in Slibah, although he had never been a firm topic of conversation for any of the other nobles, so he had never particularly caught her eye. But now when she met the young man's eye, she felt herself relax more with his steady gaze. Lissa took a second to marvel at how much of a reassuring presence this boy seemed to possess despite him being so young, even moreso when he addressed her with impeccable manners that only a royal could ever possess.

The fleeting glimpse of tranquility was gone, however, by the time he reached for her hand as a gesture of greeting, she assumed. She was brought back to reality as her mind processed what was happening around her and, again, her heart began to hammer in her chest so loudly that she would not have been surprised if the men around her could hear it. Vaguely, she accepted the brief kiss on the knuckles with a gracious smile and a dainty blush as her mind whirled. Fortunately, her voice escaped from her lips as smoothly and as confidently as she was used to while she returned the greeting.

"The pleasure is all mine, your grace. I trust your journey here was pleasant enough? I'm sorry I couldn't join you - I left a few hours earlier to visit my family, you see." Upon waiting for an answer from the Prince and with a smooth tilt of the head, she then returned her gaze to that of Maddox's and swept down into a quick curtsy.

"It is wonderful to see your majesty again, and of course to be back in Abhainn." Her eyes sparked as she allowed them to sweep over the ballroom before meeting those of Maddox's, her once-lost composure now fully righted despite the near-hysteria she was feeling inside.

"It is quite enchanting. I find that so much has changed, yet some things have remained exactly the same after all this time." Like most of her words these days, it was disguised as a simple statement - yet, if the listener wanted, a whole new meaning could be struck away from the words. Without even having to introduce herself, she had confirmed to the King that it was indeed her, that she would be staying for at least a while, and that there was still some part of the old her in there somewhere that was still reminiscent of the good old days.

William Pengrance

Location; Kingdom of Abhainn, ballroom
Interacting With; Amaryliss Ward@Pundii, Prince Antoine@vFear, Keir Farren@The Valkyrie and King Maddox Auclair@Scarlet Loup

"Excuse me, my lady, I...you reminded me of someone..."

Hope burst up as William’s brother was noticing Amaryllis. Of course, it would have been preferable if he immediately recognized her. But so many years had passed now. But still, Maddox could see through the foreign dress and mask and almost recognized her. If that was not proof that the two shared some bond, then he didn’t know what ever could be. Still, William was literally on the brink of introducing Amaryllis. As even his mouth stood open ready to form the name. But then the prince of Slibah butted his ugly head in.

No, we haven’t met yet. But here I was, hoping to keep it like that. Those were his thoughts. Those thoughts of pure malice he wanted to utter. Not only was it a horrible time, William simply could not stand the mere, close presence of his counter-part. The two could not be more different. As William had to grow and fight on his own, this sorry excuse of a prince was given every single thing he desired. He lived with nobles and William had lived in the forests. Could he even shoot a deer? Probably not. He was probably too busy writing poetry or pretending to fight. From the depth of his heart, William wanted nothing more than to insult the prince and send him away to annoy someone else. The only one who saved the young Slibah from that fate was Amaryllis. As a fight between Maddox and William, which undoubtable would break lose, would ruin her chances to reconnect completely. So he kept quiet. But he did not return the bow. Instead he stared down Slibah's prince with fire in his eyes. That was the best he could do.

In his rather self-absorbed hate, he failed to notice Amaryllis’ slight distress. In fact, as she talked, he thought she was holding up alright. With carefully chosen words, he thought, she was summoning up old memories. Maybe he was biased but he hoped his brother would realize the truth sooner rather than later. Now he should give the right example and give the two some privacy. β€œI must excuse myself." He began, only then realizing that he actually had no reason to leave the conversation without looking suspiciously unoccupied. His eyes darted left and right, trying to find a reason. Until he found one: a beautiful lady, dressed in purple. He turned to Maddox with a rather mischievous grin. β€œThe Stewards have been harassing me for weeks now. So I guess I should go appease them.” With that, he left and went towards Keir. Even though he didn’t know who she was. But not before he threw daggers with his eyes at Prince Antoine.

β€œGreetings, my lady.” He said as he made a small bow before Keir. β€œA interesting night, is it not?” he said, not particular paying much attention to her. In fact, the very words themselves didn’t sound sincere. They had William’s distinct sarcasm in it. To him, Keir was but a decoy. Best case scenario: nothing happens. The worst? Some gossips would form about him and some unknown woman. Which would get the stewards off his back at least for a little while. So instead of focusing on Keir, he was letting his eyes dart behind her, at Julianna.

Staring into Amaryllis's eyes, Maddox found a wave of memories rising deep within him. He had tried so hard to tell himself that Lissa certainly could not be here for the celebrations, that it genuinely took him a good moment or two to recognize her behind the mask. But there was no mistaking her.

When her heard her speak - or, rather, stammer - he realized it truly had to be her. A soft smile broke out across his features, his eyes lighting up behind his mask. Before his eyes, she melted into the love-struck girl he had known all of those years ago. She stumbled over words, struggling to address him, and Maddox figured he would step in to help her out, but another voice jarred him from his thoughts.

"No, not a bad time," he replied, whipping his head around to look at the younger man. His head swam in response, reminding him that he was still very much so under the influence. "Thank you, Antoine. I look forward to the union of our two great families." How easily the rehearsed line rolled off of his tongue. "You will be my nephew when this union is completed, won't you?" That made him sound old. But so did having a child of his own, which he figured would be expected soon after the marriage.

But Antoine's attention had already turned to Lissa by the time he stopped worrying about his mortality. And why did his gut clench slightly as the prince took Amaryllis's hand and kissed it? The Lissa who received the Prince was one he had known only in court - the mature, well-mannered young woman who conducted herself so well that Maddox's own father hadn't realized the two had been carrying on, so to speak, for months. Maddox looked to William for a moment to see how he reacted to Antoine before his attention was pulled back to Lissa once more, just before William excused himself from the conversation. In truth, Antoine could have given just about any reason for his departure and Maddox wouldn't have even taken notice.

Now he was the one captivated by her as she quickly regained her composure. "Yes, some things never do change, my lady," he replied, meeting her gaze. "Abhainn is all the brighter now that you are back." He wished to reach for her or to run off with her like they would have all of those years ago. But Antoine was here, and he'd be damned if he showed his future nephew that side of him. Despite how...tempting it was. "It has been far too long...perhaps we might catch up with each other if time permits?" Tactfully put, Antoine would hopefully see it only as two distant friends rekindling a relationship. But perhaps Lissa would see it as more.

Prince Antoine
Location: Abhainn's ballroom.
Interacting with: King Maddox Auclair @Scarlet Loup; Prince William @Legion02; Lady Amaryllis @Filthy Mudblood; Lady Julianna (mentioned) @HushedWhispers

Antoine offered a gentle smile as he rose from his last bow, after - to his concealed relief, at risk of embarrassing himself - kissing the hand of Lady Ward. He glanced between both Maddox and Ward to share the smile before offering his reply:
"The trip went well enough. The Abhainn river is spectacular, isn't it? Oh no, please, no need to apologize, my lady - family is paramount, after all." he replied with his attention on Lady Ward, before glancing over towards King Maddox to continue: "Why yes, I believe we will be nephew and uncle. A day I look forward to." Throughout the exchange, Antoine met William's fiery gaze, even if for but a moment, but for that moment he offered the same gentle smile before simply moving his gaze on.

Out of respect and some degree of passing interest, Antoine remained quiet to let Lady Ward and King Maddox speak. As he folded his hands neatly behind his back, he turned his attention to Price William as he made his leave:
"Farewell, your grace." he responded simply, with a gentle smile and a vague bow. He met the prince's daggers with a fairly standard gaze, although also perhaps one that betrayed the focus of his thoughts: calculating. While the conversation went on between Maddox and Ward, to which he returned his gaze to, he gathered his thoughts: his haphazardous plan to get a foothold with Prince William went about as well as expected, although he was now certainly in a good position to press his objective. It was fortunate enough that, at the tail end of the conversation between Maddox and Ward, an almost perfectly opportunity presented itself:
"Please, don't let me interrupt your reunion; it's a wonderful thing, rekindling friendships." Once again, for the umpteenth time since the conversation again, Antoine offered another bow - this time, a parting one. "I hope you enjoy your night your majesty, my lady." He offered each one an affirmative nod as he mentioned their titles before he turned to leave. As he started to make his exit, a wave of hesitation came over him: the conversation was done, perhaps he should make a second pass later. As if a metaphorical slap to the face, Antoine reminded himself: fortune favors the bold.

"Oh, I beg my pardon, your majesty-" Antoine began, turning towards the King - having made a point of stopping almost right next to him so he could speak a little more quietly: "I believe it's in the interest of the realm that this union is successful, so if there's anything I can do to ensure it's success... please feel free to write. I think we've all had enough of the bloodshed." He offered a brief parting smile and nod before now turning to leave. As he continued on his stride, once he was out of the King's estimated earshot, he let out a quiet and tired sigh. Admittedly, he was nervous: if Jack I was aware of what could in some schools of thought be treason - need not mention his little birds about - it might give Jack the excuse he likely wants to get rid of him, or worse. A necessary risk, he reminded himself time and time again, for the sake of the realm.

In foresight, his meeting with King Maddox could have scarcely gone better: it was brief, concise and polite. It was only a shame about Prince William. All that remained was the future Queen before he could really branch out in his networking - no doubt, he should be making friends with the lords and ladies of the court, especially those landed - especially those landed in Slibah. After spotting the future Queen in the crowd, Antoine started his way over.

Keir was fascinated by the way that people moved. She couldn't decide if they looked very organized or lost out of their minds. Most just looked like they'd have a few too many drinks; it wasn't hard to see the flush of color that framed the edges of their masks. Before too much longer, she'd have to find her own way to the libations. No doubt they would be easy to spot with the thickest of the throngs huddled close by. She began to move through the crowd, people-watching as she went--one of her favorite past times. As she did, the scene almost looked like a dance planned ahead of time: one person greets another person and either pretends that they don't know who they are or--if they truly don't--pretends that they do know; pleasantries are exchanged along with well-wishing for each other's families, the future Queen and King, peace for the two realms, and perhaps some gossip of the last person they greeted; then they shed the facade to move away and start again. When some of the more notable lords or ladies were 'unmasked', a sizeable host of admirers would flock to them, flush with praise and knowledge of their family's good deeds. They, too, would be gossiping a moment later about the more... unsavory parts of the said family's past.

She smirked at the goings-on; she felt that if she watched for much longer, she might even be able to imitate them reasonably well. Many of these people didn't even need masks to hide themselves as they did it on a daily basis. In many ways, it was dishonesty by a different name, all prettied up and made palatable for polite company. Keir might be wearing the physical mask, but she could never bring herself to wear a dishonest one. Luckily, not all nobles behaved in such a manner. Lady Julia among many others in Sliabh conducted their affairs in an honest way. Keir had high hopes that she would find many like minds here in Abhainn as well. After all, they hadn't been so different so far.

After pausing a moment to decide where next she should make her way and whether or not she should try engaging in the 'game' of the evening, the decision was made for her when a man in red velvet paired with a rather wild looking mask approached and gave a swift bow.

β€œGreetings, my lady. An interesting night, is it not?”

She gave a quick curtsy in returned but studied his mannerisms closely; it was easy to do seeing as his eyes were glued elsewhere in the room. Keir spared a quick glance at his target and almost immediately recognized the gown and the woman wearing it. A sly smirk crept onto her exposed lips as she turned back to the man.

"Good evening, my lord. It seems so if one knows where to look." His sarcasm had not gone unnoticed; she considered it a very useful tool, one she'd picked up as a girl with two older brothers but which she honed after her family received their new title. Her own sarcastic reply aired, Keir had her own inquiry to put forth. "I cannot decide whether your mask is intended to lure people in or drive them away. Did you make it yourself?" While she figured she might as well attempt to make some semblance of a conversation with the man despite his apparent disinterest in anything but Lady Julia, it was a genuine question.

Julianna continuously stayed by the table within the ballroom, her eyes gazed towards people that were dancing and applauded once they were done. She took another sip from her goblet of wine then turned around and saw a very lovely lady curtsying before her, respectfully while Julianna bowed her head. Hearing the lady's words made her blush and chuckle slightly as she sat her goblet down upon the table beside them now and placed her hands together, resting them lightly against her body while responding to Lady Alice. "I thank you for your kind words, Lady Alice. And yes, Abhainn is very much welcoming to me and to the people of Slibah, even my brother, King Jack." She responded, her eyes watched as Lady Alice picked up a goblet from the table now.

She picked up her goblet, as well and took another sip from it while her ears twitched upon hearing her next question. Julianna rested the goblet in her hands as she turned towards Lady Alice once again with a smile. "While Slibah is indeed my home, I do nothing but grieve there nowadays." She mentioned towards the counterpart she was in conversation with at the moment. "But so far, I love it here in Abhainn and I plan on staying to become its queen." Julianna continued as she looked off in a nearby corner and recognized the male that was staring at her as Aedyn. She offered him a nod of her head back then turned towards Lady Alice as another fanfare played and a smile formed upon her face.

Julianna knew all too well that it was husband-to-be, her king, Maddox. His features, like many others now were very recognizable in her mind and she would know who people were from mere miles away. It was then when another female entered the ballroom now and Julianna's jaw drop and mouth opened. Her lady-in-waiting, Keir, had placed on the outfit and mask that was suppose to be wearing for the night and while Julianna should be slightly upset, she couldn't be because Keir looked absolutely stunning in the attire. "If you'll excuse me." She said towards Lady Alice then started to walk away, goblet in hand still as she looked at Maddox briefly, along with everyone that was surrounding him before making her way towards Keir but someone got to her before she could.

Standing in the middle of the floor, she scoffed then looked at the corner where Aedyn was standing and saw him still standing there. Julianna was now making her way over towards the corner and went to stand beside Aedyn now, smiling brightly towards him. "I am surprise that you are here, Lord Aedyn. I thought you'd be asleep by now." She could not help but tease the male as she chugged down the rest of her wine then gave it to a servant nearby, shaking her head for no more wine. Julianna then looked back towards Aedyn. "Did the servants dress you, or did you dress yourself?" She asked of him as she already knew the answer but wanted to hear Aedyn's response anyway.

Her eyes trailed out towards the dance floor then looked as a male figure was coming her way. Instead of tensing up, she remained in a good and gracious posture but noticed something about this male. His features were familiar to her now that she thought about it and Julianna recognized who the male was. It was Prince Antoine making his way over towards herself and Aedyn now as she kept her eyes on Antoine, still awaiting responses from Aedyn, as well.

Prince William's absence couldn't help but bring about a small frown to Amaryllis' features. They were supposed to be in this together and now he was away flirting with one of the future queen's servants. It was snooty of her, she supposed, and he was clearly uncomfortable with the presence of the Prince of Slibah, but it briefly distressed her nonetheless. Her anxiousness did not take long to melt away, however, when she heard the King address her once more with that voice she had treasured for so long. Her attention turned to Prince Antoine before her gazing seemed abnormal, however, to listen to him.

"it's a wonderful thing, rekindling friendships."

The words caused a small, coy smile to grace Lissa's features as she shared, what she hoped was, a secret smile with Maddox. She felt a blush heat her cheeks as he spoke of them catching up in the near future - apparently nearer than she had first assumed, she realised, as Antoine offered his farewells. She bowed her head to him with a polite smile, despite the fact that her heart was already beginning to thump at least twice it's usual speed.

"It was lovely to meet you, your highness. Have a wonderful night." The lady waited until Antoine had left, paying little mind to the words he murmured to the King for she had no interest in politics, before speaking once more.

"Hello, Madds."

Making sure to step slightly closer to him and lowering her voice to avoid any passer-by's from listening, Lissa allowed, for the first time in a long time, her lips to split into a genuine smile. She finally let her eyes fully survey him, taking in all of him - from his mask to his shoes.

"You seem older...In a good way, of course." She paused slightly, hesitating as she chose the right words to say, before finally settling with a simple: "It has been a very long time indeed." The tone she used - a stark contrast to her previous formal, guarded voice - was lilting with both compassion and excitement. Before she got too carried away, she dragged her eyes away from the King's, only to land on a beautiful figure obviously belonging to the future queen. The mere sight of the woman caused Lissa's reality to come crashing around her, and the bright smile soon slipped away from her features. Every bone in her body screamed at her to grab Maddox's hand and run away from this nightmare - anywhere would do. Just not here. Of course, she couldn't do that, so instead she regarded Julianna with a superior tilt to the head and the burning fire of jealousy in her eyes. Most unladylike.

"She's awfully pretty, don't you think?" The King had to agree with her - she wasn't sure what else she was really expecting from the statement. It was a reckless thing to say with such a look on her own face, but Lissa was already sick of hiding everything. She wasn't interested in the stupid alliance between kingdoms, and she was just not ready to see some woman take away everything that she had ever wanted just because she was born into some title.

She was getting worked up - losing control. She knew she was. And yet it still took every inch of her self-control to smooth out her features and turn back to Maddox with a warm, yet tired, smile. She had probably looked like a jealous madwoman for that brief moment, and was already considering leaving again - should she run? No, that would just make people stare and she would most likely fall. This encounter was definitely not going the way she had planned.

Location; Abhainn's Ballroom
Interacting With; Future Queen Julianna Hardin(@HushedWhispers), King Maddox Auclair(@Scarlet Loup), Lady Amaryllis Ward(@Filthy Mudblood)

Although Alice made a relatively sincere-sounding and polite introduction, most of the future Queen's words went right over her head to allow her attention to be focused elsewhere, such as the accumulating nobles, some unfamiliar and many unrecognizable. Alice picked up on a few words, distracted by the boastful atmosphere and tasty wine -- something about grieving in Slibah, confidently expressing her goal to become future queen. Alice struggled to keep her eyes from rolling at the thought of this woman being anything higher than her. It was then that Alice decided to take in the future Queen's features to properly recognize her, and possibly judge her poorly for the sake of her own self-confidence. Nothing negative or unappealing seemed to stand out to Alice, causing a confound smirk, save for the personality, that wasn't expressed, but primarily assumed the woman had.

During this careful scrutinization, it was clear that Alice wasn't the only one that was distracted in the conversation. Alice watched the future Queen nod her head towards another area of the ballroom, Alice following the direction of her eyes in which they're met with what seemed to be another noble that the future Queen must be fond of, given that she's expressing a reassuring nod. Alice, so badly, wanted to see the face behind his lion-resembling mask to figure out who it would be that she's interacting with, but instead she let out a small sigh and turned back to the jealousy-causing dalcop.

Alice returned the smile with an incredibly fake one, an unnoticed, awkward silence seemed to have stirred in the conversation from both their distracted minds. Alice attempted to break the silence,"So, I suppose you are-"

"If you'll excuse me."

The future Queen was distracted once more, but instead she fled the conversation, perhaps from boredom, or just an eagerness to interact with the rest of the nobles. Her interruption irritated Alice, causing her to mumble under her breath as she was out of audible reach,"Bitch." Alice shook her head, grabbing another full chalice of wine and began questioning the, now previous, situation. How did the future Queen recognize her and how did she know her name? This made it clear that the woman was taught who was who, and that meant that there was a possibility that the future Queen was told of what kind of person Alice was. Depending on the source would depend on the information given. This made her nervous, hoping that the future Queen wasn't told any dark secrets or terrible lies. Alice let her eyes scan the room, thinking to herself as she sipped at her wine. It must have been some sort of ambassador, maybe an envoy or a diplomat. As her eyes are met with a galling sight, she spits the wine back into the glass as she was reminded of the hate she had for this particular wine from the associated memories with it.

The sight was none other than the easily-identifiable woman in the revealing, black dress. From her tan skin, beautiful complexion, and choice of clothing all the way down to her accustomed mannerisms that were embedded into Alice's memory, her identity was evident. Lady Amaryllis -- a possible source of information that would be far worse than any diplomat or envoy, someone more likely to spread nasty rumors and cause trouble on Alice's behalf. A small gasp escaped Alice's lips as she witnessed her conversing with King Maddox, also just as distinguishable from his attire and mannerisms. No second thoughts entered her mind about approaching the two to end their little, and now concise, reunion. Alice placed her chalice on a passing servant's tray and fixed her posture, hair, and gown, walking elegantly towards them. A faster pace was assumed as the two drew closer and a memorable irritation resurfaced from the pit of her stomach. She slowed down as she drew closer.

As she stood with the two, an unprepared feeling arose, realizing she had no idea what sort of action she would take. She decided to go with a pleasant front, for the sake of the night and for the sake of King Maddox. Alice laid her eyes upon King Maddox, giving him an elegant, though seductive, curtsy that seemed alluring and appropriate from the revealing, laced dress she sported,"King Maddox, it's so wonderful to finally see you here." Alice looked up with a contagious smile,"You look handsome per usual, the future Queen is probably dying for the night to end just to be alone with you." She gave a small wink and a chuckle while her genuine expression seemed to lose it's authenticity as she then turned to Lady Amaryllis. After all these years, the hatred still lingered, and now that the three of them were together, it was as if a merciless battle stirred up in Alice's mind. Alice eyed her up and down, not for the sake of analyzing her appearance, but rather to let Lady Amaryllis know that she was most definitely judging, and watching, her. Alice spoke again, conjuring up a fake smile,"You caught me off guard earlier, Lady Amaryllis. How does it feel to be back in Abhainn after all these years?"

Aedan Merryn

Location: Abhainn's Ballroom
Interacting With: Julianna Hardin, @HushedWhispers Prince Antoine @vFear

As he finished his drink, Aedan sighed as he handed it to a passing servant, clasping his hands idly behind his back as he looked over those enjoying the celebration, as well as the guards around the outside of the ballroom. There weren't many, so as to not spoil the mood, but he did appreciate that there were at least a few Slibahnian guards along with the Abhainnian ones. He also appreciated that King Jack had thus far seemed disinterested in attending the ball, the less of an incident which could be caused, the better - at least in Aedan's mind. His own concerns over safety in Abhainn did not need the addition of Jack's antics.

As he caught sight of Julianna approaching in the corner of his eye, he turned his gaze toward her, bowing slightly before he looked back up toward her, letting her speak first as he shrugged his shoulders slightly. "I wouldn't be doing my duty if that were the case, my lady, after all, I should be here to ensure your safety." He spoke plainly, as if stating orders, only noticing a moment or two later that she had been teasing him, before she continued on with her questions. Reaching up, he sighed as he took hold of his mask, lifting it up and removing it from his head, already having had enough with the visage as he glanced back up toward Julianna.

"They saw fit to decide upon my dress, though - I still feel, strange I suppose, having others dress me." He commented with a nod, looking over the mask in his hand for a moment before he just shifted it behind his back, turning his gaze to follow Julianna's, spotting Antoine as he approached. Aedan had no quarrels with the young prince, and in fact, enjoyed his company far more than that of his father's. He occasionally had found himself lamenting the fact that Antoine had not been born to the late king, he would have made a far greater heir in Aedan's mind to the despot which now wore the Slibahn crown.

Bowing again toward Antoine as he neared them, Aedan remained low for a moment longer before he straightened up his stance again, looking down toward the Prince. "Your Grace." He greeted simply, halting himself before he spoke further, still very much locked in the idea of not speaking less he was spoken to.

Prince Antoine
Location: Abhainn's ballroom.
Interacting with: Lady Julianna Hardin @HushedWhispers; Lord Aedan Merryn @Pundii.

As Antoine approached the would-be Queen and the lord at her flank, he took a quiet breath in. If he was nervous before, he was certainly more nervous now: with the King of Abhainn the stars had more or less aligned, and he wasn't nearly that blessed with his luck for lightning to strike twice. The stakes are also higher with Aedan and Julianna: not only is Julianna integral to any plot or scheme he might make to inhibit or even seize the reaches of his father, but Aedan was more-or-less the same - being a seasoned warrior and general as he is - and he certainly had less time for conspiracies. It was an odd thought: Antoine certainly didn't like to think of what he was doing as a grand conspiracy or plot, but in reality, it was definitely treason. As he pushed the breath out, he reminded himself: he wasn't plotting regicide, he was plotting peace, and both of these people seemed trustworthy enough. To some extent, he believed he could be transparent.

As Antoine approached the two, he offered a curt bow to each one - Julianna first, followed by Aedan.
"My lady, my lord; or, your majesty soon enough." he began, following with a smile, "I believe congratulations are in order. It must be so exciting, marrying a man such as his majesty and becoming a Queen. I hope that it's not too stressful - this should be a time of rejoice for you, not worry." He then turned his attention to Aedan, pressing on with the thought: "And Lord Aedan- a pleasure, as always. I'd ask if the trip treated you well, but I feel like you'd never say if it didn't."

After initiating the conversation, Antoine paused. Naturally, time for replies and conversation was required, need not mention room for a response from him again. Yet, in the pit of his stomach, he couldn't help but feel the elephant in the room; no doubt the others felt it as well. Even if Aedan was a reluctant ruler, he was somebody that he wanted to trust, and Julianna went much the same - even if at arguably greater risk. Fortune favors the bold, her reminded himself; in the back of his mind, he assured himself that that saying was going to kill him one day.
"Although, I'm not going to pretend there isn't an elephant in the room." he began, his tone shifting to something more somber as his stance became less stiff.

Location; Private Chambers
Interacting With; A Pointless Tradition

Rhoslyn had known one king for a portion of her life - and that one had been a poor example of a king and a man. There were times where she found it difficult to hide her resentment behind the carefully selected smiles and turns of the head, but all she could do was soldier on. The Queen had no desires to constantly play maid to the constant disasters brought about by petulance; so long as she was in her position she could hold the reins. Was it not her who turned the pointless affair at the arrival into something that wasn't an unmitigated disaster? Surely. Whenever the petulant ruler was setting fires, it fell to Rhoslyn to bring the bucket of water. But the curious thing about fire is that sooner or later the one playing with it winds up seared.

With the introductions out of the way, Rhoslyn could confidently say - in confidence - that she had yet to meet a king even after trading words with Maddox. The situation the young Abhainnian was put in upon the arrival of foreigners was not something covered in most lessons at court, and Rhoslyn was not about to give the pointless death any credit or dues, but such acts were the time when a stronger leader would make that apparent. In the brief moments of interaction, Rhoslyn knew that Maddox was many things. Conventionally handsome in a soft sort of way - not unlike Antoine. And that softness carried to his personality. There was a weakness there, in his speech and his actions. She hadn't expected him to rub flint over the pile of sticks that was this peaceful exchange but it weakened his position when all he could think to say was a blind thanks and a dull well-wishing.

How was it that these kingdoms were still standing when boys were playing at games of men.

Rhoslyn's eyes rolled at the 'defense' her supposed king mustered in response to her admonishing. No one was embarrassing him other than himself. What he failed to understand, it seemed, was that the crown was not a pass to do as he desired, and that it came with the representation of the kingdom it represented. Such barbarous acts served only to make Slibah seem like savages. But of course, she kept her barbed words to herself, letting her roll of the eye towards the boy-king serve as punctuation; in situations such as these it was preferable to let them think they got the last word. It made them feel good about themselves.

With the unfortunate introduction out of the way, Rhoslyn was led to a prepared chamber. Smaller than she anticipated, but then she was a guest here so naturally the small comforts of space such as back in her own chambers at home were just well-wishing. She thanked the servant and made sure the scullery maid closed the door on her way out. A moment alone was sorely needed, more these days than before, and she would savor every ounce of it. The room itself was suitable. There was a fireplace with a soft flame dancing along the logs, with lit candles atop a mantle. A mirror gazed back at Rhoslyn and neither of them looked particularly happy to be there. All of this for a wedding. There wasn't this much fuss when she was wed, but then when had gestures of romance been high on the king's list of human tendencies. Rhoslyn supposed it was hard to think of romance when marital fidelity was not something the king concerned himself with.

Perhaps that would be a page she would tear from the book for her own use. But someone at least should make the attempt. Was it pettiness or realism that had Rhoslyn thinking that Maddox would in time turn to the likes of maidens and whores as well? Julianna might have been pretty enough to be used as a bargaining chip, but there was always someone younger, prettier, and more willing to do whatever was asked of her.

If only the girls fantasizing about princes and castles and crowns knew the truth of it all.

Rhoslyn had removed her dress down to her undergarments when a knocking came at the door. Her attention was on the mirror, and her appearance within it, but not to the point of going deaf with vanity. "Enter."

The door swung open and with it the familiar sight of the maid from earlier. "Pardon, milady, I've-" the maid paused and turned around when her eyes processed that Rhoslyn was standing in linens and a close-fitted chemise, which had the indecency of showing more skin than a queen often did. "Please," Rhoslyn turned to the maid with a small trace of disbelief to her otherwise noble tone. "You're embarrassing yourself. I suspect this won't be the last time you stumble upon someone in a state of undress. Come now, why are you here?"

Rhoslyn cared little that a maid was in the room, nor did she think the maid should be so surprised. She must've been new to the position, perhaps chosen specifically for the foreign guests. "Apologies," a nervous bow of the head as the maid set a box on the edge of the bed, nervous fingers opening it for approval.

"What's this?" Rhoslyn crossed the room towards the box, taking the contents in hand. It was a curious thing, a mask of dark purple with frills along the edge. It was finely made, she supposed, but its purpose eluded her.

"I-It's a mask, milady. For the ball tonight."

Rhoslyn placed the silly thing back in the box while keeping her eyes on the maid and her awkward, nervous gestures. This servant was not used to this. Or perhaps Rhoslyn inspired fear, as if the events earlier reached the ears of the help who no assumed Rhoslyn took after certain sorts. "Milady?" The maid stammered.

"What's the point in a mask? More childish antics I assume. Something that covers my eyes won't make a difference. The voice. The dress. The damned hair. Masquerades are a frivolity for bored lords and ladies who are too rigid to admit they want to fuck other people. I won't be wearing one. However, you can stay and assist me in dressing for this ball. What's your name?"

The maid didn't respond right away. She was still trying to understand Rhoslyn's position when it came to masks or the lack of them. It was only after Rhoslyn asked a second time that the maid focused on the more pressing matter. "Romilly, milady." Romilly had a long way to go when it came to being a maid, let alone a handmaiden, but Rhoslyn felt a little bit of pity for the dirty blonde. She was trying, and that had to account for something.

"Romilly. Be a dear and fetch my purple gown, then do be kind as to help me out of this confining chemise. And while you're doing that, do tell me how they treat you here. I'm just dying to know whatever it is you're willing to share."

Perhaps this excursion would not be all bad. Maids were notorious gossips after all.

~~~~
Location; The Ballroom. Fashionably Late.
Interacting With; Masked Buffoonery
No one had to guess as to who Rhoslyn was as her arrival came with a lack of concern for the theme of the night. The Queen of Slibah showed up without a mask covering her face and a smirk as she passed guests who had been wearing them. She could only imagine the thoughts and glances of surprise as she effectively slapped the notion of formality across the face. She didn't so much as speak to anyone upon her entrance, nor was she locked in arms with the king or any present noble sort. She strode with confidence across the floor, stopping only when she arrived to where wine was being served. A glass was handed to her and she accepted with a grin before turning to observe the moronic masquerade.
Let them talk. Let them indulge their frivolity. And let any who took issue voice them to her specifically. Of course she knew they wouldn't. If there was one thing lords, ladies, nobles, and knights did it was keep their thoughts to themselves.
They were all cowardly that way.
