“As anyone who has experienced it will know, war is many contradictory things. There is brutality and heroism, comedy and tragedy, friendship, hate, love and boredom. War is absurd yet fundamental, despicable yet beguiling, unfair yet with its own strange logic.”
Tim Hetherington

“Genuine tragedies in the world are not conflicts between right and wrong. They are conflicts between two rights”
- Hegel

“Beyond the fiction of reality, there is the reality of the fiction.”
- Slavoj Žižek

The years become murky as time marches on from the point of destruction. In some far distant past the androids called the year 2348 there was such a calamity it seemed humanity wanted to just forget about it. Forget that they had ever caused it and so crawled back into the caves of simple barbarity. But it wasn't just that they wanted to forget, but for what seemed like generations the fires that cataclysm brought did not seem to want to die. Man had made the seas boil up. Man had struck their own cities from the Earth. Man had put the proverbial handgun to their forehead and pulled the trigger, but fucked up its own suicide and instead forced itself to limp away all the more stunted and scarred from a bullet that passed two far – within the centimeter - of just ending the entirety of its existence.

It was as much as it was personal, impersonal. But in the details of the thing man came to forget because the devastation wasn't ever important to itself as a species. What came to be was living with the current world. But it was the androids that remembered just what had happened and they found themselves sitting in the caves and under the rocks watching over the course of centuries wondering if their mission had been finished, had yet to be finished, or what had happened in the course of their relatively short existence should all of this come to a fiery end. As the skies filled with dust that blotted out the sun and the world lived in an ecstasy between putrid hot and rotting cold they silently debated in their minds what the course of humanity would be on this planet and whether they – their fathers and mothers – would come around the next day to continue what life they could scrounge together.

The vast temples to the progress of man became ruins, forgotten and unable to be really used. Towering skyscrapers, great automatic factories that whirred and sang with electrical life fell silent. And when the clouds cleared and the dust settled nature un yet destroyed by fire sprung back to life like a dormant seed waiting for conditions to improve and took these back, filling them with grass, weeds, flowers, and trees until they were but concrete and steel shells enveloped in green drapery.

And humanity was like that seed, it too sprung back to life. While its dormancy was as fitful as a man living a nightmare it had awoken and crawled from the underworld where it had lived a petulant and unforgiving afterlife and reincarnated itself in new green fields. But it had entirely forgotten what it had been. It stepped into the new reality seeing the vast ruins of over a millennium of development and stopped to wonder who had built it. Were it these strange silver men who watched from an uneasy distance? All the same, they – the androids – yielded back to them the world and they resumed progress, slow, choked. Over the next three centuries new communities emerged, cities, society. And as they did they began to peek into those old dungeons and castles they had forgotten about and rediscovered what their ancestors had made, and knowing not what they had found took it back. What did not kill them, only made them stronger.

But the androids as they watched saw the uneasy unevenness of the treasures found. Man called it magic. The androids called it science. Never the less, its possession made kings. Its possession made the androids mortal. These weapons mad man more mortal. And so the power of kings was sealed.

DIALECTIC 0: BEYOND MAN

In the far future it was believed that man would over come its differences, that the pace of technology would bridge the gaps between nations and people as man went off into space and beyond. As man sought to conquer the oceans themselves as well as space. But instead of bringing the world closer into unity mankind became more jealous. To a point, that by 2127 war broke out between the nations, and over the years escalated into complete cataclysm in 2132 that drove mankind into hiding as the rest of the world was cast in immolation, wiping the slate clean for mankind's resumption to reclaim the planet they call home.

But mankind is not alone on the planet Earth, and as elsewhere across the globe so it is in the remains of America. For to perform the backbreaking labor of their former modern world and to fight their wars for themselves are the androids; a whole species of artificial manufactured man with the intelligence and craft like biological man, but more strength and centuries worth of wisdom and observation.

With the present world three-centuries after the apocalypse, mankind has reset its footing across the globe, and focusing the world on the eastern half of the United States such is the case here. Civilization breathes new life in the renewing forests and wilderness of the eastern US, and in the plains across the Mississippi nomadic societies scour the plains for food and sustenance. And in this world nature has wholly reclaimed the old cities, what had not been blasted away. This is home now, and they share it with the androids.

For all comparative purposes, man is back to where it once was at the 16th or 17th century.

Map and World

This is the world for Beyond Man, or rather half of the North American continent. The rest of the world is still there, but in the interests of trying to keep things localized I've chosen to limit the scale of the map for now to keep us all nearby. If in the future more people sign up and post, and things spread out I'll expand it to encompass the whole of the continental United States and probably the rest of the Canada and Mexico, maybe.

And you might be wondering: what are those regions of the coastal United States that are just giant holes? The effects of the super weapons of the cataclysm at the end of the Great War. Those cities are region targeted for destruction by foreign enemies were so thoroughly destroyed they are naught but deep craters now reclaimed by ocean and the waters of the continent, the land around it wasteland in the immediate aftermath.

It is safe to presume that interior cities suffered the same fate are themselves scoured holes in the ground. But haven't as thoroughly flooded.

Being a non-native American, I only have tangential knowledge of the map, although that somehow plays somewhat to my advantage as it also immerses me into the environment as Humans have all but forgotten civilization before the cataclysm. I shall start getting to work on an application, though I am a little bit challenged in terms of creating a nation from this as the post apocalypse is no laughing matter, perhaps I shall make a theocracy, I'm sure the humans who have made their return would most likely see the remains of civilization and the Machines that they've built and mistake it as the work of Gods, for now I just need to conceptualize, I'll get an application up soon.

For what I can offer per geography, since that's what would matter in this world: The region of New England (North-east United States, above the state of New York) is predominately rocky and hard to farm. Not to say it's impossible since the region has been farmed for centuries and farmers made proper fortune there since they were otherwise close to major ports like Boston (now gone completely). Agriculture in the area left when the Eerie canal was dug connected the Atlantic with the Great Lakes which meant mid-western farmers in the states of Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan and points further could more readily get crops and commerce to the outlet to the great shipping lanes of the coast without anything spoiling or making the adventure more complicated than it was worth.

Not everything culturally though would be totally forgotten, I can grant leniency on the matter of material passing into oral history and some androids passing down information otherwise lost, as they would have in other fields appropriate for the current constraints of civilization.

The Appalachians extend for the most part from the very northern north-east down through the south into Georgia (at this point I'm going to say if all else, you'll Google the states to see where they are). Here's a handy map of the subdivisions of the range in the north:

The Appalachians going south through and passed Pennsylvania can be hard and craggy enough that it would more than likely house and keep semi-isolated various communities or pockets of people. The Appalachians come Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and on down are known for being religious in the Christian since and have had their own brand of mystical quasi-shamanistic interpretation with snakes.

The southern coast is defined by bayous (swamps), and depending on how things may go in the region in the future-world pre-war may or may not now be conquered by kudzu, which was imported over from Japan and then let go wild when people didn't know what the hell to do about it.

Michigan in the south is a lot of soft rolling hills, and the Upper Peninsula has always been poor and depopulated and I could easily say would be one of the least effected places, like with the states passed the Mississippi.

I've had some help from a friend who knows the US Geography and helped me figure out where I would like to start just from my description of the landscape, however, thinking on it more, I realize I may have 'jumped the gun' with my interest.

Seeing as my knowledge in geography in terms of the US is quite weak I might withdraw my interest as I see it as a major disadvantage and a hassle, not just to me but to others as I can't be as detailed as I wish to be or need to be in order to maintain a good role-play. I could make an individual character instead but I might become extra baggage instead of being a contributing participant in the RP.

I'm sorry if I wasted your time, however I really was interested and I hope it goes well.

@Liotrent

I don't think it's necessarily important, in any other NRP people pick up nations or regions with unfamiliar geography and roll with it. Not having first-hand experience with the area isn't very important when you can Google and look at the region in Google Maps.

Well, I was planning on starting off in Virginia, I heard there was a mountain range there that extends south into Georgia, doing a quick search up it's called the blue ridge mountains and as far as I can tell just looking at the topographical map of Virginia there are a few places where I can get fresh water, I'm not sure however how farming would look like, but just reading about the geography tells me it might not be possible in such a forested and mountainous area, this is of course not mentioning the possible effects of the super weapon strike nearby and how that would affect them and the area around them.

Demographic wise, I can see that there would probably be more Caucasians than there are African Americans that would survive, I'm not sure about Native-Americans or whether there are Native-Americans in Virginia. Religion would be heavily influenced by Christianism maybe even changed to a point where it can no longer be recognized as Christianism, and significant historical event that could be preserved would be the civil war thus having heavy connection with the Confederacy. This is as far as I got into making the Nation for the RP in terms of concept.

The Blue Ridge is an extension of the Appalachian mountain range that extends from Georgia to New England, and the highland mountain strain of Christianity can be rather cultic.

Per agriculture: blueridgeheritage.com/heritage/agricu…

From what I know of the mountains of Virginia most of the area was mined for coal and some mountains blasted for that reason, and while the above mostly deals with the Carolina stretch of the range it's not inconceivable that the Virginia stretch would be without agriculture.

The Fox Fire series of books/magazines may also be a useful reference for the region because they were written to compile and record the customs and food ways of that very region, most of it passed down from the Native Americans (the Cherokees namely, most of which were moved to Oklahoma but there are groups that moved back or were never moved) or the Scotch-Irish that moved into the area. You can probably find some free downloadable PDFs of them first six or seven somewhere.

Byrd might know more, since being a Carolina son he can probably talk about it more.

Name: The Republican Empire of Troy

Location:
imgur.com/a/vwV2r

Capital is Troy, New York

History: Due to its relative unimportance to New York City, the ruins of Troy managed to avoid the worst of the apocalypse long enough for a ragged band of survivors to find shelter and some plots of enclosed but fertile land. This was an unlikely seed for a new society, but a seed nonetheless. Overlooked by raiders and warlord states, the settlers of Troy grew into a relatively egalitarian society, trading what ancient relics they can find, growing food, and, when the natural defenses of the city were not enough, forming a militia for the defense of the community.

Roderick Grey was one of the militia leaders, one who sought not just defense, but knowledge. From passing androids to priests and soothsayers, as well as the occassional trader, Roderic learned that the world was larger than himself and Troy. The young man also learned of the concept of wealth and conquest and realized that the fertile land of the city, as well as the culture of community that made his militia strong, had potential. And so he, emboldened by this knowledge, acquired what weapons he can, hoarded what relics of the ancient world he can find, and led scavenger and raiding parties out, to increase his troops' knowledge of offensive conflict.

He then turned his attention to farming and trade, as well as attracting wise men from all over the land in order to cover his mental weak spots.

And so, in a series of wars, strategic marriages, and bribes, Roderick slowly expanded his Republic, taking large tracts of territory that once secure, were put to the plow. But he was careful to leave provisions for a succession; precedent for a democracy had already been established by his creation of a Senate and a 'House of Representatives', and in order to make sure that his successors did not lead the nation to ruin after his death, he adbicated early, allowing elections to be held among the people who had grown strong and powerful in his administration. After his adbication, Roderick became an elder statesman who supported three freely-elected Presidents until he died of natural causes, revered and loved by all.

Then the Republic took a darker turn. As the territory grew and resistance stiffened among the neighboring tribes and nations, there was also a need for labor in the mines and workshops of the north and the farms and plantations of the south. So the Republican Empire, after much debate, restored Indentured Servitude for criminals and prisoners of war, a system that soon became Slavery by another name.

This led to a period of prosperity and expansion for the Empire, but this prosperity stopped being evenly spread after a while, as a small class of aristocrats began hoarding power and money for themselves. In response, the smallholding farmers who had staffed the Republican-Imperial Army in the past, and who were now threatened by the aristocrats' attempts to reduce them to serfs, threw their weight behind the more humanist elements of society and their sympathizers, creating a fault line in the Republic. Both sides used what they knew of ancient history as a precedent for their actions, and civil war loomed over the horizon. Then, the Republican Empire was contacted by other nations; multiple other nations that were their equals or even betters.

The reaction was Panic. A panic that the Republican Empire was no longer top dog, and that getting taken over by another country was a possibility, especially if the Republic descended into civil war. And so, unity was restored, albeit shakily., so that the Empire can face the other nations. Will it find opportunity or destruction?
