History: Callum's family lives in a small village on the border of the Stairia Empire and the Voston Dynasty. One army or another would march through their modest hometown depending on whom fortune favored at the moment. The armies came and went like seasons, and selfishly took what little the village had for the soldiers. Under such circumstances, he and his family often went hungry, sleeping on the cold floor while soldiers commandeered their beds for the night. The only difference Callum could tell between the nations was the color armor their soldiers wore. He didn't know why they were fighting, and didn't particularly care; it was all stupid, and he just wanted some peace and quiet so he could study.
Callum's formal education was scant, and books were rare, but when he could get his hands on them, he absorbed everything. Whether the material was fascinating or mundane, Callum relished every moment he spent hidden between book pages. He was smart for a farm boy; hell, he was just smart, but his home offered him no further opportunities to pursue his trust for knowledge. So, for a time, he accepted his inevitable future of hard labor to support his family.
Then, his father gave him a map. It was crude, but discernible, and it marked the location of a mage called The Dragon. Callum repeatedly asked where his father got it, but he refused to say. Then, one day, he told him that there wasn't enough food for all their mouths, so he kicked him out. It was the kindest thing that anyone had ever done for him. His father had effectively disowned him, freeing him of the responsibilities of taking care of his family, and letting him pursue this mysterious lead to what would surely be a better life.
Getting to the Middle Continent proved to be a difficult task, as he had no money, and virtually no supplies. However, he did have experience with manual labor, so he was able to take on a job as a cabin boy on one of the ships, asking only passage and rations as pay. He made his way along the middle continent, scraping by doing jobs nobody else wanted to do, scrubbing chamber pots, removing rat corpses from attics, all that good stuff. Then, finally, he arrived at that mysterious location marked on his map.
