The world of Monster Hunter is a huge and fascinating realm for those who love to adventure faraway lands and slay beasts with powerful weaponry, including the massive great swords, hammers, and even ranged weapons like bowguns. Our adventures start with a young upcoming hunter who makes his way into the world by joining guilds and takes on hunting quests. Our protagonist starts out small, hunting smaller and weaker creatures, while even helping local villagers with gathering quests, while slowly progressing onto larger prey until becoming one of the greatest hunters that the world has ever seen by slaying a looming threat...

While we set eyes on the hunter, rarely do we get to see what goes on in the environments that the hunters hunt in. This realm is alive, a huge living and breathing ecosystem that houses a great expansion of all sorts of creatures. From the smallest bugs, to the largest Elder Dragons, they all thrive in a vast assortment of biomes, some of which we can't even comprehend with our own eyes. They can be found in the oldest of forests, the vast stretch-lining ocean coasts, the frozen tundra of the north, a beautiful coral forest, even in the harsh volcanic environments, and more.

In fact, when the hunters aren't looking, even they go out on their own little adventures right in their very backyards. You can find these magnificent creatures go about their daily lives, struggling to survive against the elements and from other monsters and pesky hunters, or perhaps teaming up to bring the balance of democracy against an imposing threat that threatens to destroy everything and anything in its path. If you think the life of a monster is nothing but boring, then my friend you are most certainly misinformed with human propaganda!

This is where YOU show up. You take control of your very own monster in a connected ecosystem... an uncharted part of the world that only now is being explored by hunters. It's here where the ecosystem thrives, You can pick a monster known to science, or perhaps make up your own, and set it loose! Will you be a solitary monster that does its own thing and is aggressive to everyone around you? Or will you be a social creature to form alliances with different species? The choice is yours! After all, all eyes are on you.

Now go out there and explore!

Welcome to Monster Hunter: ECO! A Monster Hunter RP that lets you be in the shoes of the monsters rather than the hunters. You take control of a monster in a vast unknown ecosystem as you survive against other larger predators and even hunters. It's rather simple really.

As for how this actually works from a social point of view, these creatures can "speak" to one another in their own language if need be and can even form alliances provided you keep to your tongue and convince them to do so. Think of it like the Jungle Book in a sense. You are free to do almost anything you want normally, but there will be times that a "warning" can come into play. These act much like how the "quests" work for humans, only you are the monster and you're defending your turf against either a band of hunters OR a rival monster or even an elder dragon, which in that case your monsters should temporarily team up to kill it. The ecosystem is also vast and diverse, having areas with forest, desert, grasslands, volcanos, tundra, etc all within reasonable distance of one another. A monster doesn't always need to remain where it's home turf in, it can wonder around.

That's it really. If you have any questions or suggestions, please ask me. Creature wise, again, you can also create your own monster if you don't want to pick an existing one. No elder dragons yet - and the number of large creatures are quite limited (just so there won't be too much attention by hunters and in a biological sense), but regardless smaller creatures of any kind (up to small bird/brute-wyverns or fanged beasts) are still fine. If enough interest gets by, (lets go to 5 LOYAL members) I'll start the RP up.

So who's interested?

I'm in. However, I think it would be problematic if everyone started as a high-tier monster (in both a RP and biological sense). A bunch of Raths would certainly draw the attention of every hunter in a fifty mile radius.

That's true. I'll have a limit on large monsters then. Maybe 3 max for the time being. The rest should be smaller creatures.

For the longest time on JPLegacy (RIP) the Live the Legend RP (where you played as dinosaurs) had a system to determine how many members of a particular species could be present in the RP at a time. Luckily Monster Hunter has a "star-rating" for each monster. That would be a good place to start (ie— two or three five/six-star monsters). And that's not even factoring in "cull" characters (GM-controlled characters whose job it was to kill/injure player characters and their NPCs).

Ah yes. I could also add that in as well. I did consider doing Light-Weight, Middle-Weight, and Heavy-Weights, but the stars would do just fine, keeping to the Monster Hunter theme.

Mentioning The Jungle Book, I thought of the one line from the 2016 film. I think I'll start off as a Great Jaggi… the only sane member of his pack. I can picture the scene now!

"NOW this is the law of the jungle, as old and as true as the sky,
And the Jaggi that shall keep it may prosper, but the Jaggi that shall break it must die.

As the creeper that girdles the tree trunk, the law runneth forward and back;
For the strength of the pack is the Jaggi, and the strength of the Jaggi is the pack.

… Alas, poor Jerry."

Oh, also, what about Fifth Gen monsters? Or are we just going to keep them out?

You can use Fifth Generation Monsters (I mentioned Jargas and Great Jargas in the profile above), but try to be accurate with their move sets as possible. Watch and study the demo vids carefully regarding the monster you want, otherwise you shouldn't play with them yet. Only play if you actually know all their movesets.

I saw that you want to limit the number of large monsters, but what do you consider large? I consider rathalos to be medium size along with the likes of lagiacrus and zinogre. I consider large monsters to be the likes of uragaan, deviljho, and najarala.

I’m talking about Elder Dragons mostly, but yeah those you listed are such as well (at least now). But no there’s enough spaces for the medium-large creatures so you’re good there.

Since this is called ECO, a focus on the Monster Hunter world having an ecology similar to ours (like in MHWorld) is interesting to me, since I've always been a biology buff. After all, super abilities and aggressive behavior aside, the monsters have always been portrayed as animals. Granted, the Elder Dragons (some of whom have been implied to be sentient) and the ???-class monsters (whose very appearance has been depicted as very Eldritch Abomination-y) are exceptions.

Forgive me for pulling a biology lesson out, but allow me to demonstrate.

At the bottom we have the producers (in Monster Hunter's case, the plants and mushrooms… or even rocks in the case of some monsters). Next are the primary consumers (Herbivores, small monsters like Altaroth, and some Fanged Beasts and Wyverns), then the secondary consumers (anything that would feed on them, such as Bird Wyverns, Brute Wyverns, and Flying Wyverns); and finally, at the very top are the tertiary consumers (depending on how far it goes), AKA "super predators." These will eat whatever they can, be it an Aptonoth or a Velocidrome. The perfect example is the Astalos' intro video from MHGen and MHXX.
