I'm the last person who should be posting here, probably, but never mind.

Simple idea pitch. Story of the week, say, 200-500 word entries with a voting system? One week to write, one more to vote 'n stuff, and start the next cycle after that. Stuff along those lines so there's a point for this forum to exist, as compared to grand writing entries.

To be frank, this does sound like a great idea. I've been wanting to try out the writing subsection, but you know, it is kind of dead.

What I'd like to do is get it official pretense, though Frizan hasn't been able to poke anyone high enough to get that and get anything substantial.

Worst case scenario... we could always just up'n do it. >.>

Not a bad idea. One important thing to make sure for such is to not have rule-overload.

beyond setting time constraints and following guild rules, a contest doesn't really need much in the way of rules.

I absolutely agree, and the way I plan to have everything set up is that there are as few rules as possible, and they are all very simple and intuitive.

No whoms't'dv'e on my watch.

200 words seems almost a little too narrow to create anything particular. But I like the concept of it.

To 500, extensible to 600 or 700. Besides it being a mechanic on a forum where I think it was executed very well, it does force you to condense your thoughts and not go off trying to bamboozle people with walls of text.

If this works as intended and there's interest in longer writings too, then perhaps one can start up a longer one on the side for say, 700-3000 words or such. But step one should be to get this section active again.

If this section gets active again, it can return to monthly and yearly activities... but the idea is simple - one step at a time, without starting off too grand so as to immediately fail.

I mean it's an interesting way to tell as much as possible with as little as possible words.

I would separate it into 3 sections - small, weekly 200-word stories, bi-weekly or monthly 500-600 word stories and the monthly 'whatever amount of words you feel like' stories.

Additionally, and this is wild, but I'd also like to see art and other forms of creating involved in the latter monthly contest -> music, poetry (although technically you can put that under writing) drawing, digital art, etcetera.

Splitting into different sections would definitely be a decent way of doing things, and different mediums will be considered for future contests. I think for the first few months or so though, we'll be sticking with normal story contests, mainly to gauge the interest of the rest of the Guild. Then other mediums will be incorporated as activity rises.

@Frizan even if you keep it to 1 contest, you'll still need assistant mods to help you judge the contest. Is that something you've brought up to management yet...?

I have not personally brought that up to any mods, because I assumed that naturally there would be more than just I running the Contest section and judging entries. I mean, the recruitment thread started by Hank is even called Recruiting new Contest Mods. Mods, plural. But given as I am the only one listed in the Contest Mod List on the Guild at this point in time, I can only assume there are no others. In light of Hank and Ruby's absence, I will have to independently recruit judges.

Art (screenshots at least) is actually a monthly thing on the same site that this thread was based on. It's a valid idea, and something that could also be put to use. Though, I'm personally an advocate of simply introducing things one at a time, to first get people looking at the forum and then interested so that it can be expanded gradually.

I'd be interested in contributing to the development of this section, though that's up to Frizan and the forces above if that's a possibility. If not, hopefully the core ideas at least get put to use.

Consistent problem with previous contests was that they were too literate for the actual playerbase. I am all for super literate contests but when you exclude 95% of the active community you are left with a possible 5% that is probably not even interested. Introducing 'simpler' art like screenshots, art, music, poems, or shortform stories, is a good way of introducing people at least, so I agree with you.

I was just throwing these alternate contests out there as a way of providing future ideas. I suppose the hard part is getting started now (and since it's just Frizan doing this.. it'll be harder).
