[OOC] Welcome to Drumvar: A Slice of Life RP (Always Accepting)

To cut a long story short, this is a slice-of-life RP set in a fictional town in ~2013 Scotland. Having spent a long while taking part in heavier plot-based RPs, and not seeing any pure slice-of-life roleplays in the Advanced section, I thought I'd try my own hand at putting together a more relaxed setting. If you're looking for an epic world-shattering plot it's not likely to happen here, but if you're hoping for a relaxed RP with a heavy focus on character interaction, development, and relationships, then you've come to the right place.

Of course, specific events will be happening, and there should always be something going on for you to deal with - generally these events and the time between them will operate on a timer, and each one will provide you with a decent amount of time to interact with people and sort stuff out. I'm not going to force people together though, so players will have to take a certain amount of initiative when it comes to seeking out interaction.

For now, the story starts in late September; uni's just started again, the winter cold's just starting to set in, and the local harvest festival's soon scheduled to begin.

𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝒯𝑜𝓌𝓃

Drumvar is the type of place that most would call a hidden gem - a large-ish town halfway up the West Coast of Scotland, it often finds itself overlooked in the face of Glasgow's bustle and activity or Edinburgh's historical charm. However, for those that take the time to look, it quickly becomes clear that the town has an appeal all its own, drawing in people from all walks of life with an array of diverse - if perhaps slightly unrefined - attractions.

The community is a fairly mixed bag thanks to the town's rich cultural and historical heritage, though the majority of the population tend to be on the younger side thanks to the large student population. Once you get further away from the college and university, however, there's a fair bit of variety when it comes to who you might run into. Like anywhere else, there are richer and poorer areas, though most of them are fairly safe to wander around regardless. Violent crime rates are fairly low, although drug-related offences have been increasing over recent years.

As for entertainment, the town has a semi-decent nightlife, and a fair variety of pubs and clubs on offer. In the daytime, the local cinema occasionally has something decent to offer, and sports clubs range from tennis to rugby to soccer. On the three days a year when it isn't cloudy or freezing, the beach is always available, and the beachfront is littered with restaurants, arcades, and stalls deigned to sell cheap tat to the occasional visitor.

If you head a little further inland, the ruins of Drumvar Castle draw many people's interest, the hills are an attractive and intimidating prospect for many a hiker, and the moors provide as much peace and quiet as anyone could ever need. The concert hall is a little too small for any major artists to bother visiting, but an occasional performance by a local band or school choir often manage to fill it up to an extent.

Many of the town's residents find themselves attending the local college or university, both institutions with an impressive historical pedigree and an impressive variety of courses available - one of the main factors that can attract new faces to the town. How the rest of the town feels about that tends to vary somewhat.

At the end of the day, whether you're a history enthusiast eager to explore the ruins of a once-intimidating tower, a student pursuing their education at the local university, a businessman looking to make a fresh start, or just someone searching for a quiet life by the seaside, Drumvar provides something for whatever path you're looking to follow.

Drumvar University

Drumvar University is located not too far from the town centre, making getting to the campus fairly convenient for just about anyone. It's pretty much within walking distance of just about anywhere important, and for those who live on the outskirts of town or don't have access to a car, public transport provides convenient access for just about anyone. It's not blocked off at all - pretty much anyone can walk through the outside portions of the campus, although they'll get some pretty strange looks if they actually try to get in anywhere.

With several new buildings constructed in 2008, the new-and-improved campus is a striking mixture of past and present architecture, home to a diverse and well-established variety of subjects and backed up by an impressive historical pedigree. The contrast between different sections of the facility is striking, with the main building and courtyard dating back centuries, refurbished more than a few times since their initial construction. The stone exteriors of the older buildings are grand to the point of being genuinely imposing, and while the interiors are a little less overdone some remnants of their grand heritage still remain - whether they be sparkling chandeliers, winding staircases, or the dozens of statues that dot the corridors.

When it comes to the actual classrooms, though, they've thankfully kept with the times. Individual desks fold down for each student in front of slightly cushioned seats, packed slightly too close to be completely comfortable - so everyone can experience the untold joy of listening to their professors drone on in a lecture as a team. Or rather because they needed enough seats to fit the larger classes, and packing them in more tightly was the cheapest solution at the time.

As for the wider campus, after the remodelling a whole host of new facilities are on offer, from a three-story gym (open to the public) with the latest equipment for everything and anything you want to train for, a cafe for those too lazy to walk anywhere else for their lunch, and a huge library with enough books and study-space to last a lifetime. Add to that the polished modern look of the newly-refurbished courtyards, and the park only five minutes walk away, and Drumvar University has a campus with something to offer for just about everyone.

Drumvar Castle

Located on a hilltop not far outside of the city, you'll be facing a fair climb if you want to visit the ruins of Drumvar Castle for a day-trip. Gravel paths and convenient stairs have been installed in the hillside, but at the end of the day you'd still better be willing to put yourself through a little bit of exercise. There's more than one reason to visit the castle, though it's not been involved in many events of particular historical importance.

It's relatively intact, for one, and efforts have been made to maintain it as well as possible - although climbing to the top of the tower is still a little precarious, especially with the steps being worn down by centuries of people making the journey up and down. Once you're up on the ramparts, the view's impressive, and you can usually see all the way to the coast.

Of course, there's several billboards dotted around detailing what each part of the castle was for - the main hall, the courtyard, the cells - as well as providing some background on previous owners and other historical information deemed important. Most of it's fairly surface-level, written with the assumption that anyone who really cares will spend time doing further research on their own.

As far as locals visiting the castle, one of the main reasons for doing so is privacy. Not many people tend to visit throughout the year, and it's a good place to go if you're looking for quiet or just somewhere to get away from it all. Which isn't to say no-one comes by at all; people do need to maintain and clean up the place, although they'll tend to leave you alone so long as you're being harmless.

Beachfront/Harbour

One of the main tourist attractions of the town, the beachfront is lined with just about every kind of gift shop, cafe, and overpriced ice-cream shop you could imagine. There's a sort of cheap and cheerful atmosphere to the whole place that makes it difficult not to find some kind of joy in the brightly-painted storefronts and boats that pass by manned with crews for just about any imaginable purpose. It's not large enough for any ferries or cruise ships to stop by, of course, but a decent number of people find work there; whether through fishing, providing sailing lessons, or running one of the local boat tours.

Most of the shops tend to sell overpriced tat and souvenirs, although you'll find the occasional local craft shop selling higher-quality and handmade items if you're looking for a gift. Most people who've been around for a while know where the good ones are, but the town gets enough visitors that most shop-owners manage to scrape by one way or another.

When it comes to food, though, everyone comes to the beachfront. Most of the city's best restaurants are around here, and if you can tolerate the place being a little busy then the food you'll receive ranges from 'pretty good' to 'absolutely delicious'. For the places that sell seafood, most of it's so fresh you can actually see it being brought in from the harbour, and intense competition has forced the standard to be fairly high. None of it's particularly posh, though; hearty portions and simple-but-delicious dishes are the usual order of the day.

The beach itself is fairly rocky, with one or two long stretches of sand breaking up the expansive sections of seaweed-covered stone. That's not to say that the whole place isn't accessible, though; provided you've got decent footwear, it's safe enough to go wandering between the rock-pools and looking for crabs, limpets or whatever else you see fit. As long as you're confident in your ability not to go tumbling, most of the beach is pretty simple to wander around. Swimming is technically an option, but with the freezing temperatures of the Scottish surf, most people wouldn't recommend it at any time but the height of summer.

Venus Nightclub

Providing bright lights, pounding music, and an exciting (if slightly shady) atmosphere, Venus is the slightly unpolished jewel of Drumvar's nightlife. Generally popular with the student population, along with anyone young, irresponsible, and in possession of a halfway-passable ID, there's never a weekend going by where the place isn't full to the brim with people that aren't going to remember half of their night by the time they wake up the next morning. It's wild, otherworldly, and a whole lot of fun once you get a few drinks in.

Of course, it's not totally uncontrolled; there's still some security present, and if you act out too badly they won't hesitate to ban you from the premises. After all, business is booming, and one badly-behaved patron isn't worth all the trouble to keep around. For that reason, while there'll always be plenty of questionable decisions on display, people rarely push it too far and generally have the sense to take things outside if they're really looking for a fight. The local police tend to pay more attention to the area on busy nights though, just in case.

And while it may not be too popular with those that love peace and quiet, the club's popularity means there's no questioning that the place is here to stay.

The Bull's Head Pub

The more laid-back of the two popular hangouts in Drumvar, the Bull's Head Pub has been around for as long as anyone can remember. Visited by a fair base of regulars, there's generally always one or two people present, but even on the busier days it never reaches the chaotic and crowded levels of Venus. Steady but not overwhelming would be the best way to describe it, with the crowds increasing whenever there's an important sporting event on or as people come in looking for a drink after work.

It's fairly old-fashioned as far as decoration goes, and you could go as far as saying some aspects are a little shabby, but at the end of the day that doesn't seem to discourage most people. The atmosphere's pretty friendly, and it's generally the type of place you'd go if you wanted to meet an old friend and catch up, or just hang out with some acquaintances to play some pool and chat for a few hours.

There'll occasionally be a more informal community event on at the pub, though they don't seem to operate on much of a schedule beyond 'whenever the owner feels like'.

Glasvar Park

Popular with dog-walkers and families alike, Glasvar Park is a welcoming sight during the day, with impressive greenery surrounding a variety of winding forest paths that snake around the outskirts of the park. Towards the centre of the park, the forest thins, to be replaced by a large and open grassy field often occupied by people playing with their dogs, kicking a ball around, or just lying down to watch the world go by. Benches are located at fairly regular intervals on the park's main paths, so there's usually somewhere to sit down.

The popular areas of the park are generally kept clean and free of litter, although as you get further in you're likely to come across the occasional half-empty bottle or discarded wrapper. Still, the scenery tends to make up for it, and you're pretty likely to come across the occasional squirrel or other small animal if you decide to go for a walk. Although if you head up during the summer on a day where the wind is low, the midges will be an absolute nightmare as they do their damnedest to eat you alive.

And while the park may be a tempting place to visit during the day, heading through at night is an ill-advised venture if the local gossip is anything to go by. If you're particularly keen on being stabbed for stumbling across something you shouldn't then of course feel free, but the general advice is to steer clear. When it's totally necessary to cut through, then it's better to just stay on the brightly-lit paths and not go too far off the beaten track.

Century Shopping Centre

While not the largest mall most people will ever have been to, the Century shopping centre boasts a variety of clothing stores, internationally-recognised chains, and something for just about whatever you need. For those with expensive taste, there's certainly one or two designer brands available, their stores squeezed in-between the larger and generally more accessible retailers. Pretty much all the clothing retailers in the town can be found here, so everyone has to stop by at one point or another unless they feel like making the journey to a bigger city.

That's not to say clothing's the only thing on offer; several of the larger shops have their own built-in cafes,
and there's always the opportunity to stop by the food court to satisfy your appetite. As well as that, the local supermarket can be found pretty much right next to the mall, meaning pretty much everything can be found in one easily-accessed location. Open practically every single day, the high-profile chains that occupy the mall can at times be far more convenient than many of the locally run stores.

Many of the local business owners aren't particularly fond of the mall, finding that a lot of people opt for the convenience of having everything in one place over the more personal touch of a family-run store. Generally speaking though, a vast majority of the residents appreciate it being there.

Charlie's Cafe

A casual restaurant for those not wanting to break the bank on a meal, Charlie's is the type of place you can stop by if you're wanting a meal fast. The food isn't really anything to write home about, but it's warm, greasy, and comes in large enough portions to defeat even the most hardened stomachs, which in most people's books is enough to get a recommendation. They tend to hire part-timers, and it's the kind of place where most people would find a first job.

It's nice enough to sit in; the atmosphere is fairly comfy and the room brightly-lit enough to feel spacious enough even when it's full, while the staff tend to be friendly but not overbearing, though the owner himself can be a little too boisterous for some folk's taste. It may not be high cuisine, but with the speedy service and convenience that make it a favourite of anyone that has to work a long day, Charlie's Cafe is a staple of the community.

Rules

These are pretty much the same rules as you usually see, but it's better to be safe than sorry. You'll be warned if you're pushing it.

• No metagaming. If your character doesn't know something, don't have them behave as if they do.
• No one-liners, please. I don't want/expect every post to break the scrollbar, but try and have at least a few paragraphs and some decent detail for people to react to.
• In the same vein, if you're having a character interaction, collaborate on a single post instead of having a whole page of back-and-forth, it's a lot more practical and better for my sanity.
• Feel free to have romance with other characters, but if you're going full-on smut (or anything above pg-13) keep that to PMs or a separate document and don't post it in the RP proper.
• Try and post fairly regularly. At least one post every week would be ideal, but I'm happy to give people some leeway - just keep the GMs updated if you're busy with other stuff or disappearing for a long while.

Appearance:

Thomas is a big man, even amongst the rest of the Highlanders. At 6'4 and getting up near 220 pounds, he is impossible to miss. Blue eyes are frame by a red beard and collar length hair of the same colour. Having spent the majority of his life outside he looks a bit weather worn and certainly comes across as a rugged mountain man, which is exactly what he is. He tends to dress the part as well, wearing well known outdoor brands like Arc-Teryx, Patagonia and others.

He certainly gives the impression of someone who is confident in his abilities when it comes to being outdoors and enjoys talking to others. Though he rarely cracks a smile, and tends to speak in the same tone of voice much of the time, he is not unpleasant to converse with and is certainly nice to look at.

Thomas used to be a Mountain Guide for Canadian Mountain Holidays, a Heli-ski Company based out of Banff, Canada. However, about three months ago, he won Lotto 649, an estimated $63.4 Million, the largest jackpot in Canadian history. He became distressed by the number of "friends" who suddenly appeared in his life, the media attention, and unending solicitations from unwanted businesses, scam artists, etc. In an effort to escape he has moved closer to home and temporality adopted his mothers maiden name of Bennet. She lives not far down the coast in Oban.

Personality:

Thomas is a very guarded person, more so since his lottery win, and tends to not share much information about himself until he gets to know a person, and be absolutely does not talk about his sudden wealth. That said though, he is kind to his friends and all animals, avoids children like the plague, and is an excellent man to have at your back. He loves to be outdoors at all times if he can manage it and is a technological disaster in motion. He still uses a flip phone, no longer has an email address, and only uses his computer for working on photos, one of his many hobbies.

Thomas is often sarcastic, without using it as a tool to hurt other people. He hates the media, advertising, television, and wants very little to do with anyone who wants to talk politics. A friend once accused him of burying his head in the sand to which he had simply replied "And it's so quiet in here".

He is currently struggling with his new wealth and sudden isolation from everyone he used to know, except another Canadian ex-pat friend who lives in Bristol and immediate family. While willing to talk to anyone, about most things, Thomas is shying away from serious friendships and relationships due to his new wealth and being unsure how it will make him appear to others. With women he is always polite, is not opposed to light flirting, and will happily pay for the odd coffee or lunch out.

History:

Thomas is the oldest of three children born to a Canadian father and Scottish mother. When he was ten his parents decided to go their separate ways. His father, Spencer, was rising in the North American television world as the creative director of the Amazing Race, and his mother, Margaret, wanted to return home to Scotland. They separated just before Thomas's eleventh birthday. The kids, dual citizens, spent the school year with their Dad and flew to Scotland for the summers to spend time with their mother.

During this time Thomas indulged his love for the outdoors in both places, equally beautiful in their own way. In Banff he engaged in hiking, skiing of various sorts, rock climbing, and more. In Oban he continued to hike but added sailing to his skillset. By the time he was eighteen and leaving home he was already considered a "rogue" or "adventurer" by his friends.

On his eighteenth birthday his father met him at the bottom of the stairs with a backpack and an envelope. "You'd better start packing, your plane leaves in 24 hours." In that moment Thomas's life was changed forever. The plane ticket took him to Argentina where he lived with a friend of his fathers for a few weeks before back packing across the continent. He took every opportunity he could to explore and outdoors and live as locally as possible. In the year he was gone he learned to speak Spanish fluently and when he returned home to Canada he continued to converse with several penpals he had met on his journey.

Now nineteen, he worked his butt off to become an accredited mountain guide. As the Canadian certification was recognized worldwide he began to travel again and work on expeditions wherever he could, from Africa, to Europe and into Asia. In Nepal he climbed Mount Everest and was turned back a thousand feet from the summit by storms. Deep in Africa he summited Mount Kilimanjaro, and back in South America he conquered Aconcagua. In the middle of it all he took three years to sail the world on the tallship Eye of the Wind where he earned his sailing master ticket.

In 2011 he finally returned to Banff with stories that few others could appreciate. He began to guide heli-hiking for Canadian Mountain Holidays and spending some time with his father who he had seen rarely in the proceeding eleven years. His siblings, who had also taken strongly to the outdoors, were still visiting regularly and he began to enjoy seeing them, and their kids again.

Then, in 2013, he bought his first, and only, lottery ticket while fuelling up a work truck. Four days later he wont the largest jackpot in Canadian history. In an instant his life was turned upside down. For someone who had lived on couches, slept on mountain sides, and enjoyed the hospitality of the poorest people on the planet, it was a complete shock. Never comfortable with undue attention he was suddenly inundated with visits from people he had met one time, con-artists looking to cash in, and life became unbearable.

Desperate to get out of town he packed up his rented one room apartment, bought an economy class airline ticket, told only his family where he was going, and left town. Now, not far from his mother and her family he is looking to try and settle his nerves, slow things down a bit, and decide what to do next.

Quite well built in frame and about 5'10 in height, Dana looks more like the type to pursue a career in modelling than a Masters in History and Archaeology. Her long dark brown hair neatly rests down to her mid back, at times either tied up or neatly brushed to the side. Her dark skin, remained a virgin to tattoos, scars or any discernible blemishes save for a few moles here and there. At times she dresses herself smart and casually, buttoned shirts and skirts or jeans. Though normally, she has a preference for comfortable clothing, her outfit usually composed of plain tank tops over grey hoodies and jackets, well fitted jeans and a nifty leather strapped watch on her right wrist. Dana is self conscious about her physical well being, and would regularly keep in shape by taking long jogs early in the morning or hitting the gym.

Personality:

Dana pretty much likes to keep herself busy and active, both in her academics and during her free time. It's a habit she's quite known for although, to her its more of an impulse rather than just any other everyday routine. It's not so unusual to catch her early the same day hitting the books at a local cafe just right after taking a quick jog around town. The reason she moved to Drumvar, other than completing her Master's Degree, is because of her interest and unwavering passion for history. Often times she does some hiking and exploring at Drumvar Castle just to bask in the view and vestige of it's history. She can be a bit of a perfectionist, being raised that way by her parents with high expectations for their only child. This only brought her more stress than satisfaction or a good sense of achievement.

When you pass her by the university hallways, she gives off a stern and studious impression, and at times may come off as bland, or even intimidating to others. Despite seemingly appearing to be serious and pragmatic all the time, deep inside Dana is in fact, quite the opposite. She's well mannered, approachable and is an over all genuine person. The last years of graduate school tend to rob much of her remaining social life, and recently you'd find her alone immersed in a book or a laptop. She gets along with most people because of her supportive and even conforming attitude towards their thoughts and beliefs, no matter if she feels a tiny bit of disagreement with what they think. At times she finds it hard to speak her mind boldly and is always overly concerned about hurting people's feelings that she'd rather not say anything that might upset them. At most she'll make an effort to politely talk some sense into them, preferring to play as a mediator in an argument.

History:

Dana was born and raised in London, living under a well to do household, with a somewhat distant father and a demanding mother. Her childhood was a fairly good one, in a sense that her parents didn't get any sort of trouble or acts of rebellion from a young Dana, though that didn't mean she was a relatively fine with how her parents ran her life. As a child they would shelter her excessively, and everything in her life is meticulously monitored and scheduled between school, sports and club meetings. She hadn't got rid of a their personal chauffeur right until she moved out and took her graduate school.

When she moved out of boarding school and onto college, she had a good taste of independence, although small and limited as her parents would still check upon her in between the school terms. On her first few years she allowed to let herself loose, made quite a lot friends, earned a lover or two, challenging herself to embrace the goodness of life without falling into the dangers of it. Though partying and drinking has its appeal, Dana has both her heart and mind set in her studies. So much that she took a masters degree after, planning on following it up with a PhD.

Dana moved to Drumvar solely for her Masters, and generally for the towns rich cultural and historical heritage. Standing at 5’8 and weighing just over 8 stone, Annest is thinner than most. She is physically weak, almost appearing fragile, something she resents but doesn’t truly care enough to do anything about. What she wears out depends heavily on who she is with and what she is doing: if she is alone, she wears whatever clean garments are most comfortable, mostly opting toward loose shirts and baggy pants (a holdover from her time spent travelling); if she is with her family (especially her nephews or grandfather), she appears more presentable, often wearing dresses or fashionable tops and bottoms. If she is working, she will dress the part: full formal for weddings, business casual for portraits, whatever-she-would-have-worn-anyway for local business events.

Personality:

Annest is, for the most part, bubbly and light-spirited. Most people would describe her as “fun to be around”, and she has never had trouble making friends. She is easy to work with, easy to talk to and generally a very easy-going person. She is also very good with kids, and, since moving into the family home, has spent a great deal of time taking care of her two young nephews - not because she has to, but because she wants to.

Despite her comfort in a crowd, she often has trouble keeping close friends, mostly for lack of trying: Annest finds it easier to keep track of relationships when they are indiscriminately kept at arm's length, and she rarely thinks it worth the effort to maintain a close friendship any longer than she feels she has to. There are exceptions, of course; but for the most part, the people who call her friend are not the same people she would lean on in times of need.

Annest is also very impulsive. This is clearly evident in her refusal to take the time to think out major life decisions, but also shows in smaller, everyday actions, occasionally getting her into trouble. In spite of this (or perhaps because of it) she has yet to truly experience regret.

History:

Annest was born in London, the second child of a Scottish mother and an English father. She spent most of her formative years in the city, spending summers with her maternal grandparents in their large Drumvar home. She loved these trips, and Drumvar was, for a long time, tinted rose in her mind because of them.

She first took an interest in photography while playing with her father’s old polaroid camera: what started as a fun game to play with her friends quickly turned into a full-blown hobby as she spent more and more time obsessing over how she could take better photos, playing with lighting and other techniques as well as reading books and magazines dedicated to photography. She purchased her own camera when she was twelve after having saved for nearly a year, and she spent every moment she could taking photos of herself, her family, their house, the city, anything that struck her.

Two days after her eighteenth birthday, Annest left London without a word. For six years after, she travelled the British Isles and then Europe, living mostly out of hostiles and occasionally sleeping on a friendly couch. To finance her trip, she began freelancing photography, specializing in portraiture and working under the table, often accepting food and lodging for her work. Although it wasn’t always easy, Annest loved every moment of her travels.

Her adventure ended when her camera was stolen in Berlin. Unable to fluently speak the local language and without a steady source of income, Annest decided that her best course of action was to head back to the UK. After finding a phone and someone with whom she could properly communicate, she called her childhood home - to find out that her maternal grandmother passed in her absence, and that her brother was taking care of her elderly and sick grandfather. Devastated, she made her way to Drumvar, arriving three months later.

Her family was overjoyed to welcome her home, and she quickly moved into the family home in Drumvar, setting up a legitimate business and caring for her grandfather and young nephews. Two years later, she has more or less established herself as part of the community; although she still feels somewhat like an outsider in a town that doesn’t quite resemble her childhood memories.

Although she has a passing familiarity with several languages due to her travel, Annest only speaks English and French fluently.

Long story short, English is required schooling in Germany, and you wouldn't struggle to find people who spoke it in Berlin. Not having a steady source of income is still a good enough reason to head home, so if you just remove the part about not speaking the language from the start of that sentence it'll be fine.
