Phosphoros

“By my blood … and those before me.”
-Mennonite warrior’s oath

In an age lost to time, a great mountain once dwarfed these lands - lands inhabited by the ancients, corpulent and arrogant. They raised their civilizations under the shadow of this mountain and warred, drank, fucked and prospered… for a time. Their magics and excesses upset the mountain, corruption at its feet, and tolerated it no longer. A great eruption, the Omega, drenched the land in ash and fire.
The once-great ancients perished to a man, leaving behind their ruined temples and monoliths. For many years, the clouds of ash choked the life from anything foolish enough to linger. But it eventually settled, turning the land rich with minerals. The Omega reformed the geography into a massive plain, ringed with volcanic ranges - a land we call the Cradle.
Nowadays, life has returned to the Cradle and the great mountain stands no longer. Five nations thrive within its boundaries, sometimes competing, at others coexisting. The greatest and most warlike of these, Kothar, marches on its neighbor Mennon, intending to break the back of its alliance with the western nations for good. It is the largest offensive seen in centuries.
As if this were not the worst of it, the magic of the ancients did not die out with its creators. In the shadows of the Cradle, dark things lurk unseen. Crypts are nesting places for horrors, children are snatched in the dead of night, shadows descend on caravans that are never seen again.
Legends tell of men and women of great ability, strength and character rising against such adversaries and emerging victorious. In times of need it is said they will appear, triumphant against insurmountable odds and bringing balance to the Cradle. If there was a time to make themselves known, now would be it.

It is a time of war, a time of monsters, but most of all, a time of heroes.

Welcome! This RP revolves around the volcanic plains of the Cradle, a bountiful, yet dangerous land of war, monsters, magic and myth. The story takes place in the midst of a war between the kingdoms of Kothar and Mennon, and threatens to drag neighboring states into the fighting. As the war rages, ancient creatures stir in long-forgotten tombs, awoken by the scent of blood and ancient magics that linger, cast by long-dead civilizations. You will step into the shoes of a great individual, akin to a classical hero, their companions or any other gifted persona. The RP will take you on a journey across the breadth of the Cradle and into the heart of Kothar - your deeds etched into legend and your spear into the heart of your enemies.

More info and sheets to be released on OOC. This is a preliminary check for interest and chance to ask questions before more work is done.

I'd like to be a Greek mythological monster, but I don't know if that would be allowed.

Maybe, if it is with in reason and able to socialize with the others, there is an off chance we could scoot them in.

Also, things are really shaping up! Excited.

@Aristo

I think maybe a day or two more and then we can set up the OOC.

I can actually do that, I have numerous mythological characters able to socialize. I could do for instance a version of the Greek giant Polyphemus, as a woman. I can also do a Minotaur or Centaur,as well as perhaps the Scylla monster or any one of those.

Might I suggest her? I mean I can be the other creatures, it's just I have a visual reference of her.

Note: If I can be her I can make her smaller, I just known that in the Odyssey the giant is bale to pick up and swallow men whole easily. I can also make her more human in form, (this is just a FC version of that classic Greek character for my personal lore.) I can play her as just a giant one eyed lady.

Oo, I hate to be the critic but I don't think that's exactly what we have in mind for characters, aesthetic wise.

@aristo Do you agree?

Errr, yeah, I don't really think this will fly here. Nevermind the whole Sonic thing, but I'm imagining PCs being humans slaying monsters. I just don't think it jives with what we have in mind for the setting.

I guess i'll just stay out then. What is it with this site and not being allowed to play a monster or an evil character?

Plenty of other RPs for that sort of thing. In a RP where the aim is to *hunt monsters* and *play heroes*, doing so kind of misses the point.
And given the tone and setting are supposed to be serious and not without grit, I just can't see a Sonic "Original Character"TM cyclopess jiving.

In Robert Howard fashion, the first thought that came to mind was someone from a destroyed kingdom or from a group on the hinterlands in some fashion. I'm very interested because I am all for this genre.

Ooooh, a dark and gritty fantasy RP that pulls from the likes of Conan? Fuck yeah! Sign me up!

Will we have access to magic and the likes? And if so, what sort of magic should we consider?

What sort of biomes does the cradle contain?

What technology levels are we looking at? Crossbows? Muskets?

Oh, and since we're taking inspiration from Conan, I assume rule-of-cool applies to armor design? (or rule-of-cleavage I guess for the women?)

The way I see magic, most of our contact with it will be via the residual sorceries left over by the ancients, or ensorcelled artifacts. They lived in what could be called a magical 'golden age.' Much of that know-how has been lost, and the new inhabitants of the Cradle are not as gifted in that regard.
However, there are those that have innate aptitude - say 1 in 10,000 or so. The ability to channel magic would very likely skyrocket you to rockstar fame.

As for biomes, we're still working on that and are in the process of having a map drawn up. But know that there are badlands, plains, upper temperate forests and lots of geysers.

I'd love to be able to just say "tech level is CONAN," but to narrow it down - technology will vary from nation to nation and proximity to major population centers. Bronze and iron are the dominant weapon/armor materials. We look to early-mid antiquity for a rough analogous period.

Rule of cool is the order of the day - though this applies more to badassery and feats. A great warrior might take on and defeat ten men at once, but the fighting itself ought to be grounded in realism (no swords slicing stright through breastplates like butter, and what-have-you).

Aristo pretty much nailed this head on. If you do decide to do magic, please do it in a more.. Howardian Homage style than say Tolkien.. I.E ritualistic rather than frivolous flicks of the hand. Magic has to be just as bizarre and gritty as this crazy world of ash, blood and sword!

As for everyone else. I will be making a discord for us to chat about our ideas, and expect the ooc shortly.

@Cleverbird Also! I have a rough draft of the map, a little hand done doodle, but it's currently being made into a more comprehensive map by @Isotope. In the mean time:

The cradle is the area inside the ring of volcanic mountains, known as the Brimlands. The Brimlands are littered with ancient ruins and terrible happenings, an almost if not forbidden area among most intelligent peoples. Beyond the Brimlands is the Dark lands... a place were we as a people have not been since we first escaped it in favor of the Cradle itself. One can only speculate it is still as terrible and horrifying as it was during the age of ash, from which we pull ancient myth and legend to understand such a enigmatic land.

The Cradle itself is dominated by a fertile plain, mostly under the guard of Mennon, the people of the horse. To the southeast, near the Silesea and Kothar border there are immense sprouts of geysers and giant lakes, left over from the Omega's blast. Far northwest, deep in the territory of the Rosahd there are nigh impenetrable dark forests, filled with wildlife both known and abnormal. It is not unusual for tales of monsters that had come from the close by Brimlands to have taken a home in such a land. To the Northeast of Mennon are the badlands of Baccum, a rough, arid place were law seems to have died along with civilization, we do not go there (of course this means we WILL go there). @Aristo Did I miss anything?
