▅▅▅▅▅ ▅▅▅▅▅ ▅▅▅▅▅

THEY SAY the great wizard Halastar Blackcloak crawled out of the Cradlelands some thousand years ago. They said it was providence itself that bade him here, that a great elven kingdom once stood in Waterdeep's place. They say Halastar was one of the first wizards, magic-users they called them then, from some great kingdom buried in sand and time and dust. They say he came from Netheril, they say he came from the stars, they say he marched from beyond the vale. They say he had seven great neophytes, they say he called beings from other planes and bade them to build his home, they say he enslaved the fell. They say he burrowed into the depths of Mount Waterdeep with molemen, that the halls of Undermountain are filled with wild treasures beyond imagining, they say he froths at the mouth and casts chain lightning with his eyes and shoots magic missiles out of his arse.

They talk alot of guff between the spluttering candles within the Yawning Portal Inn, but luckily the booze is good. You are here with your budding adventuring party, a few stories of your own under your belt and the flash of wonder and wanderlust still burning in the crucible of your eyes. Truly, the tales of Undermountain and the promise of hoards unclaimed below is enough to whet the appetite of any self-respecting adventurer. Indeed, even the very proprietor of the inn himself, Durnan, made his fortune down in those depths and used his haul to build the very flagstones beneath your feet. He'll be happy to tell you all about it himself if you like, before challenging you to descend into the depths and charging you a gold piece for the pleasure. Only if you're metal enough to stomach it, of course.

As you immerse yourself in the hearty hollers of drunk and brigands, your benefactor catches your eye from across the way and hails your parties' table. It's a straightforward enough proposition, a search and rescue or proof of whereabouts, and it certainly helps her case that she's picking up your tab and paying for your lodging. As your gaze scans over the lip of your tankard, you can see quite a few characters wheeling and dealing and barganing over the Mad Mage's dungeon. Truly there is mint to be made here, for the wily and foolhardy.

Yes, there are many tales about the Mad Mage and his mountain. But one thing rings true: there may be fortune and fame below, but danger comes to all who dive too deep.

Looking for an additional 3-4 players for a traditional dungeoncrawl through 𝔇ᴜɴɢᴇᴏɴ ᴏꜰ ᴛʜᴇ Mᴀᴅ Mᴀɢᴇ. For backstory reference to those who may be so inclined, this module is set in the Forgotten Realms in Waterdeep, though our version of that universe will have some non-cannon variations (such as the presence of Ebberon races because they're cool). For the benefit of our timeline, it is set prior to the events of evil dragon deities taking over the world and giants going ape. You are welcome to include ties to Forgotten Realm factions and characters if you wish, or ignore them completely, as this is a stand alone Megadungeon game. You may also feel free to invent locations to place in the world for your backstory as needed within reason, as personalising a setting brings the world to life.

To any newer players of D&D, welcome! No previous D&D experience is necessary to join, however be aware we will be starting at a higher level, so you're skipping the wonderful experience of dying to kobold crits, or in my case, grass. There are character creation options available for use from other supplements if you wish to make use of them, and I am available for assistance if you're curious but need a helping hand. Characters can also be crafted from the base PHB if you don't need all the bells and whistles.

𝕮ʜᴀʀᴀᴄᴛᴇʀ 𝕴ɴꜰᴏʀᴍᴀᴛɪᴏɴ:
► Characters start at Level 5.
► All characters will be part of a pre-established adventuring group. You are in the early stages of making a name for yourselves. Your party has gone on one or two adventures and you are at least acquaintances with the rest of the gang, though some may be newer then others. I'd like everyone to contribute one or two cool things they've done that have led to them getting to this level of experience.
► You start with normal starting equipment and 625 gp.
► We will roll for stats.
► We will not be using milestone XP but rather XP will be granted for dealing with monsters, trap disarming, exceptional interactions, and cleverly navigating situations.
𝕽ᴀᴄᴇꜱ:
No Custom Races allowed as there are plenty available. If you need access to specific information let me know.
Tortles: I am unable to provide extra information on this race beyond the wiki, but it's cool so I'm sure we can find a place for Tortles should you wish to play one.
Unearthed Arcana: Changeling, Shifter, Warforged
Elemental Evil Player's Handbook: Deep Gnome, Genassi, Goliath*
Volo's Guide: Aasimar, Firbolg, Goliath*, Kenku, Lizardfolk, Tabaxi, Triton
Mordekainen's Tome of Foes: Tiefling subraces, Elf subraces, Duergar, Gith, Deep Gnomes
Xandapanda's Guide to All The Things: Has some pretty nifty Racial Feats.
*Heads up these are the same
You're basically allowed anything from an official supplement except Aarakocka

𝕮ʟᴀꜱꜱᴇꜱ:
EDIT 10th Aug: As play has started and I'm juggling a few things, I am no longer accepting Custom Classes I have no experience with previously.
Custom Classes are allowed rarely on a case by case basis depending on how well balanced they are. That being said I don't want a whole party of CC characters.
► Once again, anything listed in the Unearthed Arcana, Elemental Evil, Volo's Guide, Mordekainen's Tome of Foes and Xandapanda's collection of shinies are free game.

Not sure what I'd like to play yet (so many choices!), but I'm definitely interested. I haven't done D&D in a play-by-post format before, but I love D&D and I love writing, so this sounds right up my alley.

ooooh... Shiny! Interesting!

A few questions:
1. Just to confirm: Not permitting stuff from Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, Tortle package or One Grung Above, right?

2. How will it be played?

3. Is it necessary for players to be online at certain times, or will it be through good ol' posts?

4. Character sheets. Will they use any specific template?

5. How will rolls be handled?

6. How did you die to grass?

7. can we join in?

@duskshine749 I thought about PMing you but chickened out! :DDD forgive me senpai /weeps

Happy to have you aboard. I'll whack a cheeky rooster together and pop your paladin on.

@Ellri Ah I forgot one! I've got a physical copy of Moderkainen's Tome of Foes so I can add that to the list if there's something your hankering for. My partner has a copy of Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide but I'm not au fait with it. I can see if I can pry it off him and have a peak through but no promises.

THERE ARE TORTLES? and it's an official supplement? I was not aware of tortle people. I found this on the wiki, but I don't have any of the other information about them. Is it accurate? If you want to play a Tortle and can provide everyone with the necessary resources about it I am 100% on board.

Also if you can convince everyone to play a party of tortles I wouldn't be against it either.

Also if people wanted to play a version of sword coast where everyone's a Tortle I can make that happen

2. How will it be played?

Play by posts with maps. During battle post order will be dictated by highest initiative first. The rest of the time we'll follow a standard post order unless otherwise stated.

3. Is it necessary for players to be online at certain times, or will it be through good ol' posts?

Through posts, although if we can co-ordinate a time we set aside to play I think it would add alot to the experience. I thought it might be a big ask though as I think we've got a wide array of time zones, but it isn't impossible if people present are willing to commit to a time slot. The roleplay is set at mid casual level so pacing wise I think it would be a good fit.

4. Character sheets. Will they use any specific template?

I am happy for people to use whatever template they feel comfortable with so long as it includes all the information, as I collect them together anyway. Myth-weavers is a favourite and @Cao the Exiled recently linked Tavern-Keeper which has some nice tools. I also have a roll20 account if you prefer to make your sheets there.

I can make a BBCode form for anyone uncomfortable with going off site with characters although I'll only provide one on request as the need arises.

5. How will rolls be handled?

The on-site roll function, each roll being properly labelled and then linked in posts.

I usually like each player to have a character PM as well, in which any specific information your character personally would know or discovers gets sent to. Roll a natural 20 on a perception check and suddenly you see the secret door nobody else has noticed? That'll get sent through PM. Then you can convey that information naturally IC.

I trust people not to meta-game but sometimes things slip through in little ways. Also, it's fun :D

6. How did you die to grass?

My first forray into D&D with a proper group aged 12 with Advanced. We suited up, left town to go pillage a dungeon, and rolled our first random encounter - grab grass. We laughed. DM laughed. We TPK'd.

It had a grapple and suffocation attack.

Our Magic-User only had two hitpoints and that was with his con modifier.

Pretty sure that grass was only worth 10 xp...

7. can we join in?
Ellri

Yep! I think right now we have:

1. Cao the Exiled
2. Lauder - thinking about Lizardfolk Hexblade Warlock
3. Vertigo
4. Duskshine749 - Triton Paladin, Oath of the Ancients
5. DTHar - thinking about Fighter/Monk
6. Ellri -

Which is plenty to get this show on the road.

@Cao the Exiled They all sound good to me. So long as they're level 5 following the specifications I'm happy :D

I'll set up the OOC shortly and then people can start linking things when they've got them ready.

I am going to be a Lizardfolk, probably a warlock or ranger (Party Composition permitting). I have yet to decide on which one is more ridiculous.

We're definitely in.

Yes, there's an official Tortle supplement. and a Grung supplement.
There are sites where it is available for free, but as they're probably not legal, we won't link or name them here, but we can link the official sources:
Tortle Package
One Grung Above

The class options available in SCAG that aren't available elsewhere are the ones that are more vaguely defined, such as feral tieflings, winged elves, sea elves, etc.

Thinking of playing some sort of full caster. Perhaps a Wizard.

Not sure on race yet.

@Cu Chulainn Hey, sorry Cu but we're full. I can let you know if something changes if you like.

@Ellri SCAG has been kicking around for ages but of course now that I need it I can't find it anywhere ;p You can risk stuff from that book in the off chance I scrounge it up but if I haven't found the physical copy in a few days time I'll be ruling against using it for character generation. Sound good?

Tortle seems cool so even though I don't have the supplement to hand we'll keep it as an option, although anything in the supplement not stated in the traits/accessible wiki will have to be either flavour or dropped.

And Grung I'm going to mean and deny. Water dependency sounds like fun shenanigans in a dungeon but poison has the potential to get a little too unruly for me ;p

I have decided! Playing as a Lizardfolk warlock would be the most ridiculous thing to chose, but Hexblade will keep it within a believable realm for a big scary lizard on the front line!
