An open post is a post that allows multiple or mediated interpretation by the combatant, allowing them to determine the damage done and what other effects happen to them.. In contrast, a closed post leads to one intended interpretation. A semi-closed post leads to one intended interpretation of the post, but leaves room for the opponent to get out of the damage and effects if they have the power and ability to do so.

For instance if you hit and sliced into Khan's sand dude and decided to lop off a limb, you would write it as the intended outcome, however because of his sandy nature he writes that the blade to sliced through the arm, which falls to the ground and then back into his form since he is composed of sand.

This is sounding more and more like I should have chosen another one of those options I had earlier.

The most violent of the three.

I suppose at a later date I'll enter him, but only when shit gets into a genuinely OP battle.

This is seeming like more and more trouble by the minute, and seeming like my character is going to be a punching bag because he doesn't "prep" things, but reacts reflexively to pretty much 90% of things.

Most discouraging.

First of all, Rilla did not join. :( xD He's probably dead after the following events:

His grandson took his spirit animal, Ouroboros, when Rilla had to make a deal with the Axis Mundi to get out of the prison his adopted granddaughter put him in. The deal was that Rilla would take the Mundi with him, which came in the form of this adorable little white creature. But what he didn't know was that as long as the Mundi was out, Rilla would continually get weaker. Once he got too weak, using what bits of his Creation magic, literally Creation, he puppeted himself to his brother... who 'shot the strings' probably killing him. Afterwards. Ouroboros had a tweener/heel turn and went to Joseph.

SO..

HA! :P I am not OP!

In that sense you prep the idea that he will react reflexively to something. You call it prepping for counter-attack if defending, or prepping in anticipation of contact if attacking.

Eh.

I'm mostly worried about my upcoming character not being able to do much when it comes to fighting. Too many bullet timers and people wearing indestructible 14th century armor.

I might have to branch away from the Fallout fluff/canon to make him fit.

Nah, it is actually not as hard as it seems. You just write your characters action, but make sure that if you start something there is mention of it, some way that if I am called to judge the action I can readily tell that you are doing a charged or prepped action, otherwise it is a normalized action/attack. The complexity comes later on when high tier characters are looking to score the hit that can end the fight.

When you get into a fight I can watch it to make sure that you are not being taken advantage of because of lack of knowledge.

Obliviously, the only clear way to win an arena fight is to prep everything.

I had to walk to the end of the Earth, TWO LIGHTYEARS AWAY, holding my breath and smoking a cigarette at the same time - while whistling Dixie and sacrificing a small child to the God of Ashtkoa, which is located on the other end of a galaxy, four hundred light years away to get this armor. And i had to do it in THREE days.

So don't you hate on my savvy armor! :(

Or be like me and just enjoy the writing aspect, and have your character lose if the opponent won't themselves, all in the name of:

I should probably mention I have only seen like three preps land. None of them were the deciding factor in the fight. Just my experience. :P

@Beta - If you treat the current format as a system, it will make more sense to you. Sure, the whole prep thing is pretty darn weird, in the sense that it can allow someone to break through your prep 1 super adamantium shield with their prep 2 pinky toe poke. Once you look past that though, you'll find that it's still feasible to do some proper fighting.

Personally, I don't fancy the prep aspect of it, but I understand why it's there.

Edit: Mind you, if no combatants start prepping, no one will ever need to. Escalation, ladies and gentlemen.

Edit edit: There's also the type of character who needs to prep to get their ability to work in the first place. Pretend that's Goku preparing a spirit bomb, and you're good.
