The Future Diaries are created by Deus Ex Machina, the god of time and space, who had an idea to achieve human evolution. He thought it would be, entertaining. The result of such a project is the creation of the Future Diaries, that can read the future, doing so in several different ways and forms. The most common form is a cell phone, in which people write entries, however other forms exist, such as picture books, recording devices, etc.
Each diary reads the future in many different ways basically reflecting its holder’s personality, traits, desires and much more. For the sake of Deus's game, the diaries have their strengths and weaknesses. For example, one may be able to read the future about others, but not of oneself and vice versa. It all depends on what type of journal entries the holder’s would write before being chosen as a contestant for the game.
When any user uses the diary to read and otherwise change the future in any way, this will have an effect in reality, changing what would have happened in normal circumstances. When this happens in "battle" among holders, entries in the diaries are changed as to cope with the changes due in the future. Sometimes, an entry known as a Dead End will appear. This entry means that there will be a high probability of the holder dying unless they do something to change their fate. Another entry that is known to appear, is the Happy End an entry that shows when will the holder be successful in his or her goals.
A diary holder is a person capable of predicting the future his or her Diary. Primarily, there are twelve diary holders who are candidates for Deus Ex Machina's survival game. Deus selects these people himself, and implants a future diary into their diary of some sort. There are twelve of them obviously, and these twelve battle each other in order to win the game’s prize: To become a God. Aside from acquiring the title of a God, the winner will also be able to direct the next game, repeating the cycle over again.
The Diary Holders are able to use their diary in whatever way they wish. But the downside of having this lucky diary, is that if their diary source --phone, book, recording devices-- is to be destroyed, so will the Diary Holder and they will vanish from the game. This means that your diary makes you much more vulnerable. If a diary holder were to jump off a building, yet their Diary was still working and in good shape, they would still die. Having a Diary doesn't replace a Diary Holder's life; they are still mortals.
