Just say your favorite historic period and under what leader and why.
Personally speaking I like the kievan rus under Prince Yaroslav the wise bbecause Yaroslav had establish the kievan rus as a 'great power' at the time even being able to go toe to toe with the byzantine's in 1043.

I haven't really thought about a favorite historical country, though I do enjoy pre-Weimar Germany (so Prussia/German Empire era), especially given that some of my ancestors are from there. The 1700s-1800s era is kind of my thing, too, given that my friend and I have played an unhealthy amount of tabletop in made up fantasy land inspired by the era, with countries being similar to some (we had a Prussia, another one was a French Empire, etc).

Other than that I think either pre-Westernized (or early Westernized, when guns and other stuff started being introduced by the Europeans + America) or WW2 Japan is cool. Honestly, if its 18th/19th century or the World Wars, it probably has my attention. I don't really pay much attention to before that, outside landsknechts and the occasional meme about Rome or the crusades.

I don't know how to end this, so I'm going to remind everyone not to let the Austrian dogs have any onions.

Politically, I'm down with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It might have been turned over by corruption and dominance of other empires, but I like the concept of the nation. Tadeusz Kościuszko was also a pretty rad guy.

Culturally I like the late-80s-early-90s of America and Japan. I know exactly what that makes me, no need to say it.

Once read The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes. The founding era of Australia is very interesting.
