All,

Hello! I hope you’re all well. I am interested in starting a new NRP. Given that, I have a few ideas I would like to pitch to you, the players. These ideas will certainly be fleshed out. As always, all your comments, suggestions, concerns and complaints are requested.

  • The Gods, Men and Everything in Between: This is probably the least inclined to represent a hard faction NRP, but seems to embody the necessary characteristics nonetheless. Players take on the form of Gods/Goddesses and start in a world that barely exists. Utilizing well defined mechanics, those deities will shape the world—-it’s geography, it’s climate—and create races for which to populate it—-humans, elves, dwarves, frogmen, whatever your imagination can come up with.

Upon a predetermined set of terms, the “First Age” will begin, where, having nothing but the Gods that made them exist, the strength of the Gods are at their peak. As they enter subsequent Ages—-the races they fostered in the First Age will form kingdoms, enclaves and personalities. These unique cultures can be corrupted, purified, cursed and blessed.

Unique among the world are the plethora of abilities the deities have. Giving birth to empowered champions by choosing a unique citizen of the world and imbuing them with a segment of your power. Taking reign of a certain sect of the world—-becoming ruler of Death, the Oceans, a certain element or even a facet of the living world—luck, love, lust, etc.

The subsequent ages will see the world change as only by the whims of the Gods and those unique individuals that pop up once in a millennium.

  • The Statesmen: A geopolitical, economic and military simulator that takes place following the The War. There are the Great & Victorious Stayes, The Defeated, and the Forgotten. You must meet your nation’s National Goal, work towards your alliances Strategic Goals, as well as seeking opportunities that may help your own nation or simply hurt your opponents.

Given this is immediately following a tremendous war, your nation will have considerable military forces available to it. Demobilizing will keep discontent down at home, but once a unit is demobilized, you may not mobilize it again—-this is after all The Great Peace. The longer it takes you to demobilize, the less enthusastic the people at home will be.

Whether your nation was defeated or not, the end result is simply to be put into the most advantageous position of your nation.

Well, Greece—or anything else that exists in our world—doesn’t exist in this world. You will be creating your own diety, but considering this game begins immediately after TWO EVENTS (Creation of the Gods and Creation of All-Existence, or what we’ll call reality), all there will really be for your deity to start with is a name.

After that they/he/she can start to take on more traits, powers, forms, etc.

If we get 8 players to join, that would be sufficient. Expect an an OOC thread tonight.

I'll throw my hat into the "Gods, Men and Everything in between" idea. God NRPs were actually tried and there's a decent following for it. I figure the reason why this is picked is the same for most of us. We wish to finally play such game to competition or at least to our satisfaction.

@TheodorableCan you divulge more details about how this game would be played? Would there be game mechanics or more narrative based with events spawning and in-character deeds rewarded with various achievements? I'd support the latter more as it's basically the ideal of what most players in this section like (yet never really get). Game mechanics have to be very expertly created to avoid somebody gaming the system. Plus I don't like the idea of being beaten because of a cheese strat rather than writing down a fun story and mutually decide to have things play out the way they do.
I am just curious. Thank you in advance.

It will be the former. All of my games are specifically designed to have concrete mechanics that can be utilized. Every turn (which we will call a Millennium in the First Age, a Century in the Second and a Year in the Third), every Deity will have 3 Actions.

Actions not used are saved. Such actions would be: Change Landscape, Change Climate, Create Race, Corrupt/Purify Race, Create Subrace, Instruct Race, Bless/Curse Race, Consolidate Power, etc.

All of these have concrete results, some modified by a DRM (Die Roll Modifier). I have long been a proponent, in accordance with real life, that the results craft the narrative, not the other way around.

I—-as the GM—-am simply here to hold the game together and make sure everyone abides by the game mechanics and crafts the world they want. Purely narrative games fail because they become a tyranny of the majority or the GM. In a game of ten players, it becomes a game of six players telling the other four what they can or cannot do. Or, in the realm of “mutual” megotistion you get gridlock. Here, you can fully envision the world and races you want, limited only by the reactions of other players.

I don’t personally believe any of my games have allowed for cheese or min-max strategies, so I wouldn’t be worried. There will be a plethora of random events dictated by a die roll referencing a list of events which I will make available to the players.

@TheodorableSystem appears to be light enough on the game mechanics to not worry about such.
So long you also avoid stat numbers and players influencing these it's actually easy to keep things pure.
As for overall the system sounds similar to what Alternate History forums and Sufficient Velocity uses, maybe a bit simpler thus more free.
Albeit the idea of saving up leftover action does worry me a bit. It might allow some cheesy things by giving the player freedom to stack up their actions while watching what everyone else does while negating the chance the other side would do the same. I'd say you could invent a theoretical limit to this while also watching out for players who appear to be intentionally making this sorts of play. This is the only potential pitafall I can see. Intentionally saving up a few points is fine, just don't stack up ridiculous numbers. Because I feel it'd be trouble. Kinda the same as having dimension door in Heroes of Might and Magic, especially the earlier games. You stack up sufficient "mana" that you can basically perform several if not dozens of turns worth of stuff without the other side being able to do much to counter it.
While I say this is trouble, all it really requires is you to say "no" when somebody tries to scum like this.

As for tyranny of majority, I don't think it was a trouble in narrative NRPs. The main reason they fail is because there's nothing to really hold them together. Many games are just too freeform and/or lack GM presence to be kept being engaged. With your more prominent presence and sufficient number of players I bet this could be fairly successful.
