Athelis sighs and smiles softly. “I know. But my life is hell and it’s my fault.” She takes a deep breath before she starts. “It all started a few years ago. I’m the second youngest of four and the only girl, but instead of the custom court training, I insisted my father and brothers take me to battle with them. Long story short, I eventually worked my way up the ranks, and my brothers started to die off. The youngest had died in battle. Anyway, I was captain of my own platoon, and, against my intuition, I fell in love with one of my soldiers.” She clears her throat. “One thing led to another, and we ended up sleeping together. When I found out I was pregnant, he had been sent home as an honorable hero so he could get some rest. The second oldest had been acquainted with the father, and he could smell him on me, and he put it together. He was the only one that knew and didn’t tell my father, so when I started to show and my father figured out that my brother knew and didn’t tell him, he.. he killed him.” Her voice breaks as she starts to cry, but she goes on. “My father told me that we could cover it up if I gave my child to him as his heir. I knew I probably wouldn’t be able to take care of my child, so I agreed. But..” she sobs softly and yet continues. “A few months later, when I was close to expecting, my lover had given me my father’s signet ring, saying that it was a token of peace. Stupid me didn’t think much of it. Anyway, he’d been sent out again before I went into labor. And.. it was a stillborn. As a result, I was disowned and exiled from my own home, but I didn’t know why I was exiled until later. My father called on me and told me that he knew I stole the signet ring because it was missing and one of the servants saw it in my possessions. And that’s not the worst of it, right when I was about to leave after packing my room, a soldier came with a message: my lover was dead, taken by an enemy explosion.” Tears stream down her face.
