In the small village of Kute, few or little magic users lived or traveled through. Heskin was the one and only doctor of the town, and he ran a righteous and profitable practice that operated under nonmagical means through science. A respected member of the community, Heskin was popular with the people of the village for his altruistic, if not curt, business.
Heskin married an elvish woman named Adra Aetherbreeze at the age of 28. The Aetherbreeze bloodline was known to produce powerful mages, and Adra herself was no expception. Her lineage made her a high profile target as many powerful nobles wanted to use her to enhance her own bloodline or to have a powerful weapon under their control. Wanting nothing to do with either, she found herself on the run and eventually heavily injured in the town of Kute, where she was brought to Heskin. Originally, Adra only planned to stay in Kute for a week to recover from her injuries. However, for whatever reason, she found herself compelled to stay with Heskin. Perhaps it was his genius and precision while he performed his medical duties. Maybe it was the way she turned him to a bumbling fool with a simple compliment. It could have been the interesting debates the two had about the potential of magic versus technology. Either way, the two grew close, and friendship blossomed into courtship, and the two eventually married. She told Heskin of her powerful magical abilities and the target on her head, and Heskin vowed to keep her and her secret safe for as long as he lived. Adra lived a quiet life compared her previous one on the run from bounty hunters, and she was happy in the small village of Kute.
Three years into their marriage, Adra was with child. The two were overjoyed at the thought of the child, and the two prepared the best they could for the coming baby. While Adra prepared the house and researched ways to take care of the child, Heskin researched the best ways to deliver a half dragonborn half elvish child, but he unfortunately could not find enough information on Dragonborn-Elvish childbirth due to the lack of readily available information near him. Adra gave birth to their daughter but did not live to see her grow up, as the complications in childbirth lead to unfortunate passing. Heskin named his daugher Adara, in memory of his fallen wife. For the next five years, Heskin redirected all of his spare funds and time to building a the Adra Salvescale Public Library in Kute, paying for the construction of its walls and supplying of its books. After its construction, he spent another five years researching and writing his book, Childbirth Procedures Relating to Halfbreeds, and donated copies of the book to all the libraries he could contact in Salem.
Heskin never coped with the loss of Adra, due to a combination of raising Adara, maintaining his practice, his various side projects, and his own stubborn refusal. Being an Aetherbreeze, Adara began to show magical talent at a young age, but Heskin forbade her from practicing magic, as Adra's warning about her bloodline echoed in his mind. When asked for an explanation, Heskin told Adara that magic was simply a waste of time compared to science. This grew to be a point of contention between the two, until the two had an argument so intense that Adara left for her own at the age of 17. Heskin was wounded by his daughter leaving, but refused to take responsibility for his actions. Bitter and jaded, Heskin blamed magic for the reason Adara left, and grew to hate it.
Heskin ran his practice as he did before he began his family, and his life was unevenful until the discovery of a vein of the powerful magical element, Lyrium (leer-ee-um.) Lyrium was an element that could be refined and processed to increase a mage's magical abilities, either through extending their magical reserves or spell potency. Kute, formerly just known as a small village for the occasional traveler to find rest, became a bustling mining city rather quickly, and it's identity was changed, even to the point of being renamed the Lyre after the Lyrium the town was populated for.
The expansion of the formerly small village came with mages, all of which made Heskin's medical practice irrelevant, as healing could now be done through a swish and flick of a wand. With his source of income gone, Heskin was forced to sell his medical practice, which was demolished and turned into a chain of stores that sold potion shops.
Hitting rock bottom, Heskin blamed the loss of his once happy life on magic, and vowed to show that it was inferior to his scientific pursuits. He began inventing devices and machines that replicated magic spells that mages could cast. However, the research and materials took money that Heskin no longer could produce, and his savings were eventually depleted. Unable to provide for himself, Heskin turned to a life of adventure to pay for himself and research. His goal in life is to replicate every magic spell known in Salem, but even Heskin himself knows this task is impossible in his lifetime. As this old dragonborn roams the world, perhaps he can comes across something to end his journey, whether that be a breakthrough in research, a reconnecting with his lost daughter, or the wrong side of a blade in his chest.
