Welcome to the Voting and Feedback round for RPGC#27!

Voting and Feedback guidelines
  • Please take your time to read through all the entries before voting for your favourite work. Did it make you laugh or cry? Was it the most original? Did it have the best grammar? The reasons you base your vote on are up to you, as long the vote isn’t based on whether or not you like the author.
It would be nice if you could share why you voted for a specific work too.
  • Giving feedback is optional but highly encouraged. When giving feedback you should be respectful and constructive. It’s good to point but the flaws in the story as it will help the writer grow, but don’t be mean.
Make sure to point out what you liked or what worked well too.
  • Contestant may and are encouraged to vote for and give feedback for the other entries, but don’t vote for your own entry. If contestants wish to withhold a vote and only give feedback, that is good too.
  • The entries are anonymous unless the writer asked for having their name added. That being said, writers may claim their work at any time during the voting period.
  • The entry with the most votes will win, but in case of a tie a Contest Mod will cast the tie-breaker vote.
  • You can vote for entries and post your feedback in this thread.
  • If you rather have your vote and/or feedback be anonymous you can PM it to @Calle instead.
  • The voting period deadline is July 15th, 9:00 GMT+1, which is 7:00 game time (both times are in a.m.).

@Calle Sorry, didn't mean to leave you hanging. ^-^' Hope I can participate in the next one. And I appreciated the effort made of updating the contest.

Unfortunately, this month was a little too hectic on my end to work on my story. But I did write a plot outline. (That’s longer than one of the entries now that I look at it again.) But I guess it was a little too ambitious, since it probably would've been closer to the maximum word count. Oh well, there’s always next time. Least I can do is give these entries a thorough review.

Preamble: So, whenever I write or edit any story, I run it through Google Docs or any place with an automatic spell checker. Because that sort of feels like the bare minimum effort required to make sure there’s not really easy and fixable errors in my story. (And knowing how the writing process is, there’s still always something that slips through the cracks.) But, I’ll admit, when I copy+paste a story into Google Docs and there’s several highlighted problems right off the bat. It does make me feel a little less motivated to plow through them. And that’s the case with two of the three stories, before I even read them and notice what Google missed. (Which I know it did from merely skimming the works.) But, typos aren’t everything. Nor will it particularly affect my overall impression, if the rest of the writing is solid. So with the prewritten preamble out of the way, I’m going to read and review these from smallest to largest. (Since that’s what I usually do.)

I wish good luck to all three contestants! Hopefully anonymity makes people more compelled to vote. But whatever I or others may say, please do continue submitting stories in the future contests. Because hey, at least you accomplished the step of getting your entry posted.

My vote goes to "The First and The Last."

Life got in the way as it is wont to do, so I did not finish whatever I had planned for this contest. However, I'm here with feedback for the entries and imaginary champagne for all the entrants!

I won't be doing an in-depth sentence by sentence breakdown because I don't think those are helpful outside of creative writing workshops and don't fit the vibe of casual, friendly critique on an internet forum, so consider this more of a broad review. If any of the authors would like a more detailed one, I am happy to provide in PMs.

If any of that at all comes across as harsh, I apologise. Tone is hard on the internet. Writing for an audience (worse, a competition) is one of the most difficult things to do, and trust me when I say that I appreciate all of the stories up for consideration for the creativity on display and the obvious hard work put into them. Good work, everyone!

As per the norm, I'm gonna whip out my reviews in public.

The above voters want you to continue submitting entries. They want you to take no offense. You should. But I'm here to tell you that if you want to play ball in this corner of the internet, you're going to need thick skin, buddy. Maybe get some sharp claws so that you can defend yourself. You're in the jungle now, act like it. Let's hear that roar!

Hopefully no one took that seriously or got offended.

Five more days for the voting period. I want to thank all the people who left a vote and a review so far.

And remember: you may post here or PM me if you wish it to be anonymous.

My vote goes to The First and the Last as well.

Depending on how I use the time I have over the weekend, I might be able to post some constructive thoughts. But for now I'll just leave this with a vote.

It's the last day of voting!

I won't close this thread after the deadline, so people who still want to submit feedback can, and the contestants can claim the works if they want to.
