North Riventor

"Sir, I am Medivac from the Haynek Institute and I am here to help. In order to do that, I require your assistance. Now, I want you to take deep breaths, ok? Deep breathes. Breathe in, breathe out. Good, good. Are you feeling a bit better? Calmed your nerves? Are you hurt anywhere? What is your name? Do you live close by?"
Medivac

"Good sir, I assure you we are the two bravest individuals you'll see today, Can you tell us more about this Chicken Lady and Pretty Lady? Were you kicked out trying to play a song for someone dear to you?"
Radiant

"So kind, s-so very k-kind... Y-you two are just like h-him... My d-daddy! But... My papa has changed, m-mister and miss. Just l-like my mommy. They will not l-listen to me, they w-won't hear how sad I am, sir..." That was the boy's sole response before Medivac pulled Radiant aside to discusse their next course of action.

With the boy reassured that neither of the Operators were harmful to him, he emerged from the tractor. His appearance was horrible, beyond horrible. The clothes he wore were normal, a dark blue shirt and a pair of gray trousers. It was his body that was disturbing, it appeared to be decomposing. The skin on his head were sloughing off, only a few strands of dead hair remained. His mouth had mostly lost its lips and his ears were on the verge of falling off. A small, white smiling mask with a long, cute nose attempted to hide the deformities, but it was too small and covered little.

In his gnarled, rotting hands was a broken violin. "T-The Chicken L-Lady owns a l-lot of chickens... Lots! S-She lets them r-run around h-her house. S-She doesn't want t-to share them with a-anyone... k-keeps them to h-herself like t-the Pretty Lady. Some o-of the other v-villagers sometimes t-try to chase one of t-the chickens... but they a-always run to t-the forest... a-and no one g-goes to the f-forest." The boy answered Radiant's question. "A-And the Pretty Lady i-is very beautiful! I-I fished out h-her shawl d-during the w-winter solstice... D-Do you know w-what that means? Oh yes, I will become the Pretty L-lady's husband! We w-will walk hand in hand, m-ma'am. I will play for her, mister a-and miss.

The boy was happy to be answering the Operators's questions. Although it appeared he had trouble even standing up, his form was hunched and he seemed to have trouble breathing. Looking closely, there appeared to be very severe Originium growths beneath his clothes. He was clearly infected, but was this typical symptoms of Oripathy?

Radiant’s felt aghast at the horrible appearance of the boy. She had never seen a person in such a bad shape who was still able to walk. Such an appearance sent chills down her spine. Was this the ultimate fate of those who could not manage their Originum infection? No, that could not be true. This had to be unnatural. In her years of working on Terra, escorting Medivac, this was the first time she'd seen someone in this advance of a stage.

Radiant found herself gripping the arms of the catatonic woman, as if to reassure herself. “Medivac, what’s your diagnosis on this boy? I’ve never seen someone in such a horrible state. It’s almost as if they are falling apart, literally. Have you had any cases resembling this?” Radiant whispered with great concern.

The old doctor shook his head. “I’ve seen my share of near terminal cases. But what I’m looking at here, it’s miraculous how the lad is alive. This boy is in no condition to look after this woman.”

“On that I agree. Perhaps we can carry her to the main village. Come to think of it, maybe the others would know the way?” Radiant replied.

Medivac nodded. “That’s an option for now but we still need information. I’m not sure if this lad can give us reliable information. He appears…regressive but he’s eager. Did you catch that part about the forest? How no one approaches it?”

Radiant scowled angrily. “Yea, the forest. I’m not the superstitious type but it is the place where one of our own went missing. We just came out of the forest too. To think it could’ve been us.”

“Let’s talk to the boy and see if we can get a better picture of what’s going on here,” Medivac replied.

Medivac approached the boy and maintained a safe distance. He did not want to get to close to the boy, as the last thing he wanted to do was startle him.

“His infection may have accelerated rapidly with what appears to be a lack of support from his parents. Most definitely, this boy is in an abusive relationship. Never mind his appearance, the state of his violin is another story on its own. Saving someone in such a state, would it be mercy instead to let them pass on? What is the best way to help this boy?” Medivac thought to himself. To see a child in such deplorable condition...

“Lad, what’s your name? My team are here to help the locals and that includes you. Can you tell us a bit more about yourself? How you became like this? Where are the other locals? Perhaps you can tell us a bit more about the forest and your beloved.”

“Hey!” Radiant interjected, “If you live around here, then maybe you know this gal I’m carrying? You know a spot where we can leave her safely behind? Her home burnt down."

"M-my n-name is pretty h-hard to s-say if you a-aren't from h-here. J-just call me t-the Musician. I-I'm the o-only musician i-in Riventor so I c-can claim the n-name." The Musician answered the first question. "The Cursed Rock appeared o-on my skin one d-day. T-The main village then started to stink f-for me and my family, s-so we built a s-small house in the s-swamps. Ever s-since, my Sickness has g-gotten worse. M-My father gave me this beautiful m-mask, so I could be healed of my afllictions. Maybe you could have one too..."

"T-The forest is alive, mister and miss. E-evil too. Dark t-things lurk within t-the woods, and lures in hapless p-people who are never seen again. B-Best to stay away from it, o-or at least don't get l-lost in it." His description was more of a warning.

“If you live around here, then maybe you know this gal I’m carrying? You know a spot where we can leave her safely behind? Her home burnt down."
Radiant

"O-Oh, I know her. I-I don't know her name, but I know t-that the villagers burnt her home down a-and killed her spouse because she g-gave birth to a-a monster." The Musician revealed. "T-They threw the baby down their w-well, I believe, before sealing it up." It appeared taking her to the town might not be a good idea. "M-Maybe you could leave h-her with the Chicken L-lady, but she i-isn't very welcoming."

Medivac thanked the boy and turned around to face Radiant. “Well Radiant, what you think of our Musician’s tale?”

“He’s the best source of information we got,” Radiant replied with some worry in her voice. “It’s a lot to take in to be honest. Regarding the mask, I’m sure the father made the mask to protect him. Probably to hide his infection at an early stage. If it actually worked as intended…”

“Mhm, then our lad here won’t look as he is now. The forest is...alive it appears. Did you notice anything out of the ordinary when you were keeping a lookout?” Medivac asked.

“No, it was simply quiet. I didn’t sense anything strange while you were checking on her. Perhaps whatever manner of evil lurking within hasn’t noticed us.” Radiant replied.

“But something did cause one of our own to go missing in the forest,” Medivac replied thoughtfully.

“How can you lose track of someone? Especially in a group! Sigh…what about her? If what the Musician said is true, then the trauma this woman suffered was most likely a few hours ago. I doubt any other locals will welcome us if they see her or the boy.”

“What happened to her is unforgivable. I cannot condone the murder of a baby. Still, we should try to ascertain the truth for ourselves. To give birth to a monster...”

“Perhaps we should find this well and see the truth for ourselves,” Radiant said with an hardened expression on her face.

“Radiant, try and see if you can coax her out of her mania. It’d be best if we can get her side of the story. Hmm…this is troubling. We have much to do and little time. Our immediate priority is to find our missing person. We will need to link up with the others eventually.”

Radiant set the girl down on the ground carefully. “You’re asking more questions?”

Medivac nodded. “Just a few more. I’m aware we short on time, especially pertaining to one of ours going missing. We may need to split up.”

Radiant was silent. She already knew that the Medivac was already making plans to stay behind. Perhaps he’ll try talking to the Chicken Lady by himself. Perhaps he wanted to investigate the well himself or both.

“You want me to look for our missing man with the others.” Radiant stated bluntly.

Medivac nodded. “Your speed will cover a lot of ground. Your senses are stronger than most and that will keep the others out of danger. Hopefully.” Medivac strove forward towards the Musician.

“Musician, you’ve been a great help. Do you know where this well is? Was it by the burnt house? If you want some more help, perhaps we can talk to the Chicken Lady about your beloved one.”

ACTION:
Radiant attempts to get the woman to talk. She begins by inquiring about her house, her husband, and finally, her baby. She sees the woman still holding onto the silver key for dear life and makes a note of it.

(I know this is several actions but I'm writing the ACTION this way so we don't go back and forth over 3 failures to get the woman to talk)

"The w-well's at the main village, m-mister... N-Near the mayor's house." The Musician immediately answered. "But b-be wary, mister. If y-you have the S-Sickness... then the place w-will stink! Like something w-was rotting f-for days...!"

"H-help? You want to h-help? So kind, s-so very k-kind... Y-you are just like h-him... My d-daddy! But... My papa has changed, m-mister. Just l-like my mommy. They will not l-listen to me, they w-won't hear how sad I am, sir..." The young infected boy then made his request. "P-please... Please find the k-key, good s-ir! T-to the Pretty L-lady's room! The.. The C-chicken Lady has it! W-well, Mr. Jan also h-has it... I saw him r-recently, near the w-well.
H-he used to play with m-me. We th-threw rocks into t-the well and l-looked into our r-reflections, while m-making silly faces!
D-daddy used to say not to d-do it, else my face w-wil stay that w-way... Now the water in the w-well is always h-hazy. It s-shows these weird i-images...
"

"W-will you bring me the k-key if you f-find it? I p-promise to repay y-you somehow... M-me, and the P-pretty Lady!"

-

Radiant's attempts were fruitless. She continued repeating her mantra, unresponsive to all the questions thrown her way. When the Operator made note of the key the madwoman was holding though, the object gleamed and Radiant was struck by an eerie vision.

Images flashed before Radiant with various noises. First was an image of a lovely home next to a familiar structure that would be recognized as the Chicken Lady's house. The next image was the home burning in the night, a silhouette of a man in the building being charred within. A mob of shadows armed with torches and makeshift weapons surrounded and watched the inferno. They then lifted what seemed to be a baby while a familiar figure watched from behind a tree, the madwoman.

The last image was the well which was then boarded up with multiple planks. The last sound the vision gave was the snarl of a terrifying beast.

The madwoman stopped her mantra once Radiant was done with her vision, staring at the Operator with dilated eyes. She then got up and dashed into the forest, disappearing between the dead trees. Her sprint was swift, too fast for either Radiant or Medivac to chase and catch her.

"If I find the key, yes I will give it to you. Could you describe it for me? Can you tell me where I can find Mr. Jan?" Medivac asked the Musician.

"Damn!" Radiant cursed as she pushed herself up. It was all too sudden. In the blink of an eye after seeing those visions, the mad woman suddenly roused herself and shoved Radiant to the ground before bolting towards the woods.

"Hey come back here! It's dangerous out there!" Radiant shouted." That shove completely took Radiant by surprise and by the time she got back up on her feet, the woman was long gone, hidden away by the forest, too far way to give chase.

Before hearing the answer to his questions, Medivac headed towards Radiant. "What happened? Why did she suddenly get up and leave?" he asked.

"Hell if I know. I just looked at her key, saw some...visions and up and away she went. You wouldn't believe how much strength she pushed me with Medivac. It was as if she got possessed by something. Damn, now that's two people who are now missing in the woods."

"Visions?" Medivac asked with great curiosity. "Did something happened while I was talking to the lad?"

"Yes, I saw some interesting stuff when I looked at her key. I saw the Chicken Lady house, then a house burning in the night. Inside that house was a charred man. There was a crowd watching, I think I saw her hiding in the woods as the house was burning."

"Interesting," Medivac mused, "That coincides with what the Musician was talking about earlier. And this key she was carrying, do you have it?"

"No. She was still holding onto it. A silver key...there's one more thing you should know Medivac. I saw the boarded up well. Didn't see what was inside it but I did get a very nasty sounding snarl."

"Hrm, I wonder if that was the key he was looking" Medivac muttered under his breath. "So, there may indeed be a monster. I know where our well is, it is in the main village near the mayor's house. Apparently it stinks if you're infected."

"So what's your plan Medivac? We have two missing people in the woods now. There is a well that may actually be holding something dangerous. We're still scattered from the rest of our teams. Then there's the issue with the boy and the Chicken Lady."

Medivac cracked his neck. "Let's head towards the village. I don't believe the Chicken Lady will be very receptive to us for now. We'll check for signs of the two missing people as we make our way through the woods and once we arrive at the village, we can come to the bottom of this mysterious well and what happened recently."

"Well, if there are any survivors of our team, I'd imagine they will be trying to make their way to the village too. Yea, this makes sense. Let's get the others. We can ask the Musician to guide us there. Less chance of getting lost too." Radiant said.

"Mr. Musician," Medivac called towards the boy. "Can you show us the way to the village? Or point us where it is?"

Medivac

"The k-key is gold i-in color... but it's n-not actually gold... Other than t-that, it's pretty n-normal..." The Musician answered. "A-and you can probably f-find Mr. Jan near o-ormaybe inside the well... That's where h-he hangs out most o-of the time... I-If not, then I-I don't know where h-he would be... B-But the well has been sealed u-up for a long time now... Y-You'll probably need a r-rope or something to g-get down."

-

The Musician then pointed the two Operators towards the village. It was just south of the Chicken Lady's house, the same direction Wu and his group came from meaning they probably already came from the main town. After bidding farewell to the Musician, Radiant and Medivac return to the Chicken Lady's house to rendezvous with Wu and the others.

The two Operators found the Feline Defender and Ibon sitting beside each other right beside the house's door. They looked despondent, and Will-O-Wisp was nowhere to be found. "Hey, you two." Wu greeted Radiant and Medivac. "Don't ask about Will-O-Wisp. Just... just don't." A silence then came over for a few moments before Wu resumed. "So found anything in that tractor? There was someone there, right?"

"As for the lady here, we didn't get much from her other than the story of the burned house next door." Wu motioned to aforementioned ruin. "There was a couple there, Antek and Hanuska. One day, Hanuska gave birth to an... 'abomination'. The village then took her baby and burned the house down with the husband inside. I'll bet Hanuska is the Kuranta woman with you."

"Speaking of that woman, where is she?" Wu then chuckled a hopeless laugh. "She got taken by the forest too?"

“Don’t ask about Will o Wisp?” Radiant said angrily. “What do you mean don’t ask about her, we’re now missing 2 of our own! What the hell happened here? Where did Will o Wisp go?!” Radiant began to yell as she grabbed the collar of Wu.

Medivac grabbed Radiant’s shoulder and gently nudged her. “Let him go Radiant. When they are ready to talk about what happened to Will o Wisp, they will talk. We need to talk about our next move.”

“Well, judging from Wu’s words, we just lost 3 people to the woods in the blink of an eye! Will-o-Wisp, Dragonheart, and that woman, Hanuska! They are all gone!”

“And as I told you, you need to calm down,” Medivac stated bluntly as his grip became tighter.”

“Tch, fine. I guess you’re right Medivac. What’s done is done. Sorry Wu and Ibon. Whenever you guys want to talk about it…” Radiant released Wu’s collar and Medivac did the same for her.

As the tension relaxed slightly, Medivac cleared his throat. “Radiant and I met the a young infected man under the tractor. His condition is quite severe , calls himself the Musician, but he was friendly enough. Here’s what we learned. The Chicken Lady is apparently holding this man’s lover. He needs a key to access her room. We’re going to find a Mr. Jan in the main village. I imagine we’ll also find other Haynek operators closer to the main village.”

“Wait, he literally calls himself the Musician? And is that our plan? Helping an infected man get a key so he can see his lover?” Wu expressed in bewilderment.

“Yes, the infection has affected his mind a bit. Can’t recall his name. He said he would repay us in some way. I don’t have a reason not to trust him for now. And if we collaborate what he said with what the Chicken Lady said, the incident with the burnt house should’ve been quite recent.”

“We’re also going to investigate the well near the mayor’s house. It’s in the main village,” Radiant interjected. “The Musician told us the village was south of this house which was the same direction you guys came from. We might find signs of the others on our way back.”

“What’s in the well?” asked Ibon nerviously.

Both Radiant and Medivac were silent. Radiant looked at Medivac and extended her hand out as if telling Medivac to break the news.
“A corpse in the best case scenario. A sealed up abomination if what we’re hearing has been the truth,” Medivac answered.

"Wait, what?!" Ibon sprang up at the answer. "A corpse at best?! What abomination are you talking about?" The Medic Operator demanded from Medivac and Radiant. "What happened with you two on the tractor? And you didn't answer Wu's question on what happened to the woman you're carrying." It seemed the party was not going anywhere until Ibon had her answers.

A tired Wu was the next to speak. "I'm not sure if you guys want to head to the main village. I mean, it's alright if you're not Infected like Zasada but if you are, then it smells bad. Really bad, like something's rotting for days. We've heard from a local source that it's what's keeping the the forest's evil away... and I guess Originium." He explained. "The locals call it the 'Miasma'. Supposedly, it comes from the mayor's mansion. Zasada's there right now talking to the town mayor."

"Ah, you haven't met Zasada yet, haven't you? She's an Ursus and works as a researcher." Wu said. "I'm pretty sure you've heard of her. She's pretty infamous in Haynek Institute."

"What happened with you two on the tractor? And you didn't answer Wu's question on what happened to the woman you're carrying." It seemed the party was not going anywhere until Ibon had her answers.

"She just got up, pushed me down and ran into the woods when I tried to get her to answer some questions. Was holding really tightly to this key too. Where she went, your guess is as good as mine." Radiant replied with a sigh. "By the time I realized what happened, she was long gone. Couldn't risk chasing after her and split us up even more."

Radiant paused to consider her next line. Should she mention the visions she saw from the key? She frowned; Ibun's nervous demeanor would probably not take it too well. Best to leave that out.

"From what we gathered over at the tractor with that infected boy, the villager believes Hanuska gave birth to a demon. Her husband was killed, her house was burned down, and her newborn was thrown down the well. And given the state of the burned house, I'd say it happened not too long ago. So, either the village are raving lunatics harming innocents, or they were justified in their horrific actions." Radiant shook her head. Such acts of violence were not unfamiliar to her but it still rolled her stomach at times.

A tired Wu was the next to speak. "I'm not sure if you guys want to head to the main village. I mean, it's alright if you're not Infected like Zasada but if you are, then it smells bad. Medivac was intrigued by this 'miasma'. "What a coincidence, the well we are looking for just so happens to be near the mayor's house. This warrants an investigation don't you think? While we are there, we can also look for a certain Mr. Jan for a key. Zasada is there too? I think it would be prudent to meet up with Zasada, we can share information with each other."

Radiant looked back at the chicken house. The stench couldn't be worst than the stench at the main village, right? "Gotta wonder how our locked up lady is handling this," she thought to herself. She turned in the direction of the two tired operatives. "By the way Wu and Ibun, what were you and the others coming here for? Did you have an objective here? I don't recall the reason if you did give one."

Radiant

Ibon was speechless at the answer. She could not believe that not only that the townspeople might be more hostile than she thought, they could also be justified in their hostility. And that justification could be lurking down in the village well. She sighed and said nothing in response, but it was clear that she regretted asking.

Medivac

"Hey, hold on. We came here, specifically, to get away from the main village and the 'Miasma'. We were supposed to just wait for Zasada to finish with the mayor before we head out east." Wu put a damper on Medivac's plans. "Uhh, yeah, about that. While we can't stay anywhere here in Riventor, a local told us that there was an abandoned radio tower east of here. If we can get the comms there running, we can contact Haynek Institute for help."

"Besides, shouldn't we set up a base of operations first before we go out doing favors? We're scattered and disoriented and we need to establish contact with Haynek Institute... or, I suppose, anyone who can help. We should get our bearings first and then we can see what's up with Riventor and this weird forest."

"By the way Wu and Ibun, what were you and the others coming here for? Did you have an objective here? I don't recall the reason if you did give one."
Radiant

"It's just as Wu said, we're here to wait for Zasada. Once she comes back, we'll make way for the radio tower. Supposedly, there's also a bunker under the tower so we can stay there." Ibon replied. "We didn't know that things would be... interesting here." The Liberi Medic seem to have calmed down for the most part, but she was still sad.

"First, a plane crash then an evil forest then an unhospitable village. Just what have we gotten ourselves into?"

Medivac gazed lingered on the dark woods. If Ibun and Wu's encounters with the inhabitants was met with such unfriendliness, then trying to investigate the well will be kicking the hornets nest for sure. Forget trying to understand what was going on with the originum in the area, all Haynek operatives would be in danger.

Medivac sighed. There was truth in their words. Getting the comm tower up and running would be an immense help in locating the scattered Haynek operatives, especially the leader for this operation, Blizzard.

But why were the comm towers down in first place? Even a place as remote as this one would want to keep contact with the outside world. And why was the bunker abandoned? Lack of personnel? Something was off.

"Radiant, change of plans. We will wait for Zasada and see what the situation is in the village before we make our next move. What we were about to do won't do us any favors with the locals and may jeopardize whatever it is Zasada is trying to do. Right now we are blind and that is deadly for any operation. Waiting for Zasada and seeing what she has to say would be the most prudent course of action." Medivac replied firmly.

Radiant bit her lips. She agreed with Medivac's action but time was not on their side. "Medivac, I don't mind waiting but can we actually wait for her? She'd have to go through the woods to get here. You know, the woods that is apparently evil and spirited away 3 people that we know of. And you two can correct me if I am wrong but from the sounds of it, she's coming here alone?" An uncomfortable silence lingered in the air.

Radiant cursed under her breath. "I don't doubt the strength of an Ursus but even that may have trouble against whatever it is we are facing. Ibun and Wu, how soon do you think Zasada is going to arrive? Do you have any idea?"

"We're just north of the main town. There's not much forest between here and there, don't worry. I mean, it's not completely safe... but it's safe enough." Wu assured Radiant before addressing Medivac. "I'm not sure. Hopefully, she considers that we're waiting for her and gets straight to the point with the mayor. But knowing Zasada, she will."

It was then that another figure appeared, an Archosaur boy with dark skin and green scales ran up to the group. "Archosaur? What's wrong?" Wu greeted the newcomer with worry, not liking how the boy approached them with panic. "Uh, guys. This is Archosaur. He's one of the locals who helped us out and told us about Riventor and the forest around it." The Defender introduced the boy.

"Guys, guys. It's bad. Really bad." The Archosaur panted. "The forest. It's agitated. Not sure why, but everybody else has already went inside. I came here to warn you but I really need to get back." He told the group of Operators. "Listen, don't bother looking for refuge here. Nobody will let you in, and my place is too small for all of you. Not to mention the 'Miasma'." A pant before he continued. "Head straight to the radio tower. I know the path there passes through the forest but I'd say you should go while the forest isn't at its angriest."

"Don't worry about your Ursus friend. I'll find her and look after her. Just go!" The Archosaur finished before leaving, going as soon as he arrived.

Wu and Ibon looked to one another before looking at Radiant and Medivac. "...Looks like we have no choice. You two ready?"

As the Archosaur boy slipped back into the forest, Radiant and Medivac simply stood there trying to process what just happened. "So there are decent folks in this place. That's very kind of him to go out of his way to warn someone of the danger," Medivac mused.

"If I was a cynic I'd say that boy is trying to separate us from Zasada. Then again, that boy did go out of his way to come all the way here to warn us about an impending danger. Hope he makes it out ok." Radiant turned to Ibun and Wu. "Alright, let's trust your new friend to handle Zasada. If Zasada heeds that villager's warning, I'd like to think she'll find someplace to stay rather than try to force her way through alone. Besides, she should know that we when we get this radio tower up and running, we'll be able to locate everyone else and confirm their status."

"Yes," Medivac agreed, "Let us make haste and get as far as we can before this forest 'wakes' up. I suspect that will be the time we encounter this miasma. How fast can you two go?" Medivac gestured towards Wu and Ibun.

DENSE FOREST

The Haynek Institute Operators did not dally. Wu took point and they located the main road, a wide dirt path, that lead to the abandoned radio tower. Their pace was quick, heeding the Archosaur's warning. Indeed, as soon as they entered the dense forest, the Operators felt a sense of overwhelming dread. The sky turned dim and the trees around them seemed to be closing in on them. The silence amongst the group was almost deafening.

"Look!" Wu broke the silence. He, too, was burdened by the dread but his eyes then spotted several figures in the path ahead.

There was a group of six people. Their skins were pale as the moon and they were mostly naked with just rags and leaves covering their nethers. On their heads were headresses, or crowns made of black material that the Operators realized was Originium, crafted and shaped into headwear. They were huddled together, looking at something the Operators could not see. Blocked by the naked bodies of this strange group.

"Could they be... the savages that Archosaur talked about?"

Despite Ibon whispering, the naked group noticed and immediately rose in alert. Their Originium crowns obscured their faces and once they found the Haynek Institute Operators, one of them screeched a war cry before they all charged to battle. Four of them were armed with long sticks while the remaining two remained behind and began hurling rocks.

"Damn it!" Wu blocked a hurled stone with his enormous shield. "It's on!"

"There's your answer Ibun! Get ready!" Radiant yelled, drawing her out her throwing knives from her side pouch. The sudden charge of these savages armed with nothing but sharpened sticks and rags for clothing made them easy targets for her. With a knife in each hand, she brought them straight above her head and like a butcher making a chop, let loose the knives as her hands came back down.

Two, four, six, eight - in rapid succession, the 8 knives flew through the air aiming to immobilize the legs of the chargers. Radiant drew her sword and prepared to intercept any of the other chargers.

Medivac stood tall and raised his shield to the chest. The ones running to them wielded what was essentially a spear. The longer range of the enemies, coupled with the rock throwers was a primitive but dangerous predicament. One rock hitting any of them in the head could be lights out.

"Let's push through," Medivac announced. "Radiant should have immobilized a number of them. Besides, we are sitting ducks here for those rock throwers if we wait for them to come to us."

The savages' naked bodies held no defense against Radiant's knives. Three of the savages were felled, screaming from pain, but the last one managed to evade the volley of blades and went straight for Wu.

The Feline Defender raised his shield and the savage swung his stick, shattering the wood weapon against the metal shield. But the hostile was not at all deterred, he leapt on the Defender in an attempt to maul his enemy to death. Of course, Wu would not go down without a fight. In fact, he has no intention of going down at all. "Go! Get the rock throwers!" Wu told Radiant and Medivac as he tried to shake off the savage off his shield.

"Look out!" Ibon warned from way behind. The rock throwers hurled stones at the incoming Operators. While Medivac had a shield to block the rocks, Radiant must evade them as they closed the distance. However, a lucky throw hit the Oni Operator in the rib and she found out that these savages threw these rocks pretty hard as her side flared up in pain. Maybe cracking a bone or two.

"Radiant, I got you!" The Liberi Medic threw a plastic orb that glowed green at Radiant. It was a precise throw, the green ball splashing medicinal salve at the Oni's blunt injury.

"Thanks Ibun!" Radiant shouted. The pain on her ribs dulled considerably with the Liberi's healing. "Medivac, you go on straight ahead! I'll come around!"

A rock flew just past her shoulders, narrowly missing her head. These savages were scarily accurate with their aim. Radiant rolled into cover behind a fallen log. She peeked out of cover and watched as Medivac pushed ahead alone.

Thwack! A shower of splinters fell on Radiant. Radiant quickly moved out of her position behind the trunk of another tree. "Damn, seems like Medivac wasn't able to draw that one's attention. That's some crazy strength!" Radiant thought.

Still, the vegetation around her was getting dense. It would be harder for the rock thrower to track her and hit her. Radiant weaved in and out between the dense foliage as she closed the gap between her target.

Radiant was now within rushing range of one of the rock throwers. She held her position, waiting for Medivac to catch up and cause trouble.

The rock throwers were now shouting frantically and the familiar and heavy footsteps of Medivac came into range.
======
Thonk thonk! The rocks harmlessly bounced off his shield. Medivac readied his baton. It was a blunt device but the strength of a draco meant that it was a weapon that could easily shatter bone. One hit on exposed flesh would leave more than a bruising.

The rock throwers were now shouting at each other as Medivac cautiously approached. They quickly encircled Medivac with rocks in hand.

"A pincer. Not bad, my shield can only protect me in one direction after all. I've had worst odds. All I need to do is take one of you down." Thonk, thonk! "Radiant will take care of the rest." Medivac raised his shield and charged the rock thrower in front of him. Perhaps a broken leg was in order.

Radiant rushed out from her position. With Medivac going after the one in front of him, she went for the rock thrower behind Medivac. Radiant raised her blade, using the blunt side to knock out the rock thrower.

The rock throwers continued to hurl stones, but to no avail. Radiant weaved and ducked through their attacks while the rocks did little to Medivac's huge shield. The two Operators closed the distance, Medivac smashed one of the savages' legs with his shield while Radiant knocked the other one out cold with the blunt of her blade. The savage with the broken leg screamed in pain as he fell to the ground.

Meanwhile, Wu bashed the savage on him to the ground with his shield before bringing it down the savage's head, crushing it into a mulch of red gore. His shield was splashed with blood but Wu did not seem to mind. "Is that all of them?" The Feline Defender sniffed as he surveyed the aftermath. Some of the savages were still alive, albeit on the ground screaming from their injuries. Victory belonged to Haynek Institute.

"W-What do we do with them?" Ibon asked about the survivors.

"Leave 'em behind. Let their beloved forest take care of them. Come on, we don't have much time." Wu, rather coldly, declared. He began moving to the radio tower, but Ibon seemed to hesitate.

"Wait a minute Wu!" Medivac exclaimed. "These individuals were clearly huddling around something before they attacked. Let's take a quick look at what they were and then make our way to the tower. If we are going to be here for a while, we should know what these savages are interested in. It shouldn't take too much time." Medivac began to move before Wu could respond.

As Wu walked past Radiant, she took a glance at Wu's bloodied shield. A lethal response to their problem. She was no stranger to killing, Then again, these savages had the intent to kill so any of them from Haynek were justified in using lethal force for self defense. And these were infected living in the outskirts and the villagers didn't appear to held them in high regard. Perhaps this would help them earn some points with the mayor?

Radiant knelt down next to the downed savage that she knocked out. She grabbed the originum headdress and carefully placed it inside one of her field operation bags. An interesting find.

"What are you doing?" asked Ibun?

"What else am I doing Ibun? I'm gathering data! We can take a look at this when we reach the radio tower. Might be nothing special at all but this is documentation on the field!"

Closing her bags, she stood up with her sword in hand carefully observing her surroundings. Radiant paused in the direction of the howling and felt her senses heightened. "Ibun, stay close to Wu! And make it quick Medivac! Never know if their howling might attract others."

====
Radiant keeps watch as Medivac quickly searches the area where the 6 figures were huddled around.

After the search, continue with Ibun and Wu to the radio tower if nothing else happens.
