They say this city is magic...this probably isn't what they meant.
Cars rush by, people hurry to their jobs and meetings, the smell of coffee and bagels waft on the air, and if you look close, you might see a rat climbing a dumpster. With modern advancement came distraction, and with distraction came the near death of an ancient art. Witchcraft, the Occult, Magic. Whatever you call it, it still manages to find a way to adapt in this ever changing world. The covens are few and far between, and bloodlines have been lost to time, but the art is still alive if you just look for it. This city never sleeps; no one knows that better than the witches of the night.
1: Please be able to write using decent spelling, grammar, past tense, and third person.
2: There may be limited spots for other fantasy species. DM me for deets.
3: You must gain permission of a player before killing or maiming their character.
4: The magic in this RP works as such: If you can think it up and justify why your character can do it, then it's probably doable. Just as long as it isn't super OP.
The Rosenthal Coven is one of the original witching families to establish a coven in the United States in the early 1600s when European settles came to plunder the new land. They sought out new knowledge, potential herbs, and the promise of a new start. However, as you know well know, the attitude towards witches was never the chummiest. The Rosenthal Coven suffered many losses at the hands of men; witch hunters. They were burned, hung, drowned, and tortured for their perceived crimes. Their numbers thinned.
Like most other covens, they learned to adapt. They only practiced in secret. They no longer shared their gifts with mankind. They were careful, sneaky, and cunning. And, due to their diligence, they have survived.
The city grew up around them. The coven has seen members come and go, new faces appear and old ones pass. Their small turf of sanctuary takes the shape of an ancient mansion that may just be held together by magic itself. It sits on a historic plot, having won out the offers of greed and pay and now deemed an irreplaceable landmark. Very few coven members actually live there; it's more of a cool clubhouse, really.
So far, the coven has survived witch hunters and the inner politics of the magic world. Through resilience and spirit, it may outlast us all.
Types of magic A brief list of ideas that can be added to and expanded on.

Witch Hunters
Most are driven by religious motivations, but not all.
A popular tool is dragon scales and hide. Live dragons are impervious to magic, and their hide and scales can protect the wearer from magic attacks, up to a certain point. Unfortunately, dragons are all but extinct now and authentic dragon hide armor is very expensive and bulky. A popular modern solution is synthetic dragon hide: a thin and plyable material that can be sewed into the lining of clothing. It's not as good as the real thing, but it may keep you alive should a witch want you dead.
Weapons used are whatever is in style for the era. Witches bleed just like humans, and magic can only do so much to stop a rain of bullets.
Hunters typically travel in groups, pairs at minimum. Hunting clans have dwindled in number as the number of covens goes down. But there are still ancient clans from the olden days, just as soaked in myth and lore as the oldest witch covens.
Rosenthal Mansion A sprawling manor and grounds that takes up nearly four city blocks. To the outside world, it's a historical landmark that's supposed to be a museum but can never seem to get it's funding together. To the coven, it's home. It has many, many different rooms. Some are practical, some...not so much.
Rooms and areas of of the mansion that can be added to and expanded on.
Cobblestone paths that wind into brightly lit forest and gardens. Small fields and clearings adorned with old picnic tables and firepits. Old mossy stairs and fountains with crystal clear water.
A mixture of old and new. Ancient hard wood lines the floors and the original cupboards have seen more history than they show. New appliances have been worked into the layout. The refrigerator gets stocked often, with both groceries and left over potion. A sticky note on the door urges you to please label your containers, lest we repeat of the hair growth tonic incident again. It's in Ismael's handwritting.
Rosenthal Mansion boasts the larest collection of magical and occult books in the United States. Because of this, their library is open to guests with expressed permission. This also means that the responsibility of keeping an assortment of forbidden books has fallen on the mansion. The dark arts section is off limits and guarded by several advanced spells.
Portrait hall is a hall of portraits. Specifically portraits of famous and influential past coven members. But these paintings aren't just simple canvas; they are bewitched and sentient. They carry a piece of the spirit and the knowledge of the member they represent, so that that witch's wisdom can be called on by new generations. Sometimes the portraits are helpful. Sometimes they aren't. And before you ask, no, Agatha doesn't have a portrait. She never gave expressed permission for one.
The Door of Possibility is a fickle object. It was supposed to be a doorway that would take the passer through to the place their heart most desired. And sometimes is does that. Sometimes is drops them off in the middle of Greenland. You take your chances with it, and it's generally recommended that you stay away from it.
Crystal balls and teas leaves, astronomy and cards, dominoes and oil. Whatever your medium of choice, it's probaby in there.
How about a door that opens to any one of a number of random rooms every time someone opens it? Or a beast pit? Oooh, or a door that opens to an endless black void, and no one knows why?
