(Due to lack of players and my own time constraints, this RP failed to begin.)

The tenth installment in the acclaimed Rift Warriors series has arrived!

"Huh. So this is what the world looked like in twenty forty-five..."

Standing in a crosswalk with The Flatiron Building at his back, longcoat flapping in the wind, the popular character Aster Wilde gazed up at the towering skyscrapers of New York City's financial district, the camera dollying out to show the urban environment this fictional character was located in. After a cut to show his face more clearly, his attention then turned to the upright standing oval of swirling black and purple accented by a light blue ring across from him in the middle of the street.

"It matters not what year or state the world is in. I, Queen Morag of Arlington, shall be it's conqueror!"

A gleaming steel greave extended from the swirling rift and stomped the pavement, followed by the rest of the character in her shining plate armor and black crinoline-supported skirt as the camera panned up then zoomed out. As the two characters readied their weapons - Morag, her halberd; Aster, his pistols - the voice of The Messenger sounded the familiar opening announcement to each match:

"Rifts closed, dimension stable. Ready? FIGHT!"

What followed was a series of clips of in-game footage captured from the perspective of the two fighters one after the other as they fought in a full 3D space modeled after the real-world location the ad had shown Aster and Morag appearing at, combining motions of the players in place of normals, and the players imitating well-known poses to perform their respective characters' special moves (although all of Queen Morag's soldier-summoning specials had the same pose, so it was clear that the game had some ability to read what the player's intent was when making the pose, too). It was obvious to anyone familiar with the team at Okami Sun Games that the players were members of the dev team, as both of the players in the virtual environment clearly looked like fairly well-known Okami Sun Games employees, just with the outfits, weapons, and accents of the Rift Warriors characters they were playing. Not only did they have the characters' weapons and special moves, but they even seemed to be capable of super human feats, with Aster's player running on the facades of skyscrapers while firing his pistols, while Morag's player showed to be able to crash right through windows without a scratch on him.

After about a full minute of this gameplay footage, the pre-rendered animation took over once more for one last shot of Aster Wilde and Queen Morag rushing toward one another, before cutting to black. Then, the title card for Rift Warriors faded in, followed by a rift opening next to the "s" from which the roman numeral X burst in, causing the title to spin as the black background shattered and fell apart, revealing an aerial view of Paris, France, Eiffel Tower smack dab in the middle, a pair of swirling purple and black rifts accented by a ring of blue opening on its middle platform.

Suddenly the ad cut to a somewhat shaky shot of the Rift Warriors' series director Ryuichi Masada standing in an office room with a smartphone to his ear. "What do you mean "The Rift is connecting to our world"?! It's fictional! I'm the one who made The Messenger!" said the English interpreter.
.

"Rift Warriors X launches on October 13, 2045, exclusively for the PS Ocular Superior."

The first officially sponsored tournament for Rift Warriors X begins on May 12, 2046 in New York City!

Released in the year 2045, Rift Warriors X is the latest title to be directed by legendary video game developer Ryuichi Masada. A huge departure from the traditional fighting game genre the series had comfortably stayed in for entries I through IX, this title was released on the portable AR/VR gaming platform PS Ocular Superior. Players are able to meet in real life, start the game on their game gear, take on the weapons and visual elements of their chosen character and battle in an open environment copied into the game from their real-world surroundings. The players are still limited somewhat by the specifications of the character they chose; a player with well-trained muscles will not be able to swing a slow, heavy weapon-wielding character's armament any faster than a player with no muscle training whatsoever would, but can otherwise move and attack however they wish. Of course, for anyone without their own PS Ocular Superior and copy of Rift Warriors X, it'll just look like the players are standing there staring at one another with their headgear on. Naturally, there is also an online component with pre-loaded map data gathered from popular real world tourist spots so players can engage comfortably from their own home.

From a narrative standpoint, the Rift Warriors series is about warriors from across Earth's history being drawn from their own time periods into The Rift, given a superhuman power related to their time period of origin or style of warfare, and tasked with fighting for their right to return to their own time period by a mysterious entity known only as The Messenger. The characters themselves are completely fictional, but they are inspired by different types of warriors and warfare from human history; think "Spike TV's Deadliest Warrior" but as a fighting game with a bit of a fantastical flair.

The first Tournament for this unique gaming experience is going to be equally unique. Rather than a normal tournament bracket in an enclosed event venue, competitors will have the freedom to engage one another as desired anywhere on Manhattan Island. Players will compete to qualify for the semifinals by accumulating WP, or Winner Points, either by winning their best-of-one matches with their chosen opponents, or by completing challenges and minigames set up around the city by event staff.
  • Competitors begin the tournament with 0 WP.
  • After winning a battle against a competitor with equal or greater WP than them, winners earn either half of the difference in WP, a tenth of their own WP, or 2 points; whichever is highest.
  • After winning a battle against a competitor with less WP than them, winners earn either a tenth of the loser's WP, half the WP they would have lost, or 1 point; whichever is highest.
  • After losing a battle, competitors lose either the amount of WP the winner gained, half their WP, or 10 points; whichever is lowest.
  • Challenges and Minigames reward 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10 WP depending on the quality of the competitor's performance.
  • All changes to WP are rounded to the nearest integer.

At the end of the tournament's one-week period, the players with the top 4 highest WP totals will move on to the semifinals, the winners of which will move on to the final round which will determine the tournament's winner. Matches taking place during the tournament will be livestreamed and saved as VODs online for the majority of the audience, while people with their own VR gear will be able to watch the matches happen live on the street if they're physically located near the competitors.

Ryuichi Masada himself is even scheduled to make an appearance during the tournament's opening ceremony to give a speech!

Create your Player and their Fighter and enter the tournament to come out on top!

For this RP (which, for anyone curious, is a reboot of Rift Warriors X: An Isekai RP that is being made because the GM ended up too burnt out to follow through with his original plans for the RP), I'll ask players to create two characters: the first one will be their actual real-world character, the player of the video game called Rift Warriors X. The second will be the fictional character they play as in Rift Warriors X, who's weapons, powers, and visual aspects your first character will take onto themselves while playing. You're free to take inspiration from any kind of warrior from history and give them a special power based on either the time period/location/culture they come from, or the type of warfare they engaged in. For example, a viking character may have the ability to manipulate ice and snow, or the leader of an army or nation could have their far-reaching influence represented by the power to create portals anywhere they've personally been.

As for me, hi! I'm Nyaha, and this is the first RP I'll be GMing on this forum. I feel like it's important to state that up front. We have an assortment of players from the RP this is being rebooted from, myself included, but feel free to hop in anytime! I might impose a player limit if it gets to be too much to keep track of, but the open nature of the tournament should leave people free to join in up until the semifinals start.

Also don't feel like you have to focus only on the tournament arc, players can pursue individual plots, or the overarching story that will begin once I get comfy in the GM position. It'll focus on the mystery behind Ryuichi Masada not appearing to make his speech, along with sightings of tournament participants who appear to be able to replicate characters' abilities in the real world. With that in mind, I hope we can all make this a fun time for one another!

By the way, everyone who was part of the first Rift Warriors RP is free to post their CS directly into the Characters tab. For everyone else interested, please post your character sheet into this OOC tab first for review. :)
