So I started reading a book today that I think would appeal to the PoW crowd. It's called Underground Airlines and it's set in an alternate timeline where the Civil War never happened and slavery exists in the present day in four Southern states. A mystery book, it is fucked up and depressing, and hard to put down. I've torn through over half of it just today.

Vilage I think read something similar where a bunch of Apartheid southerners went back in time and gave Robert E. Lee modern weapons and nitro for his heart condition. I forget what it was called, I think it was Guns of our Fathers or something.

It was pretty loose as far as alt-history goes, though the more I read about it the more I get the feeling most alt history is actually pretty loose.

Speaking of alt-history and maybes, Chapa sent me some scan of a book on the history of the Atlantic concerning the diplomatic relationship of Morocco and England under Mansur and Elizabeth respectively. Apparently both nations were conspiring to carry out a joint attack of Spanish colonies in the Americas in order to nip Spanish power. However when the two rulers died the plan followed.

But what if it had become real?

I read that too. It's a Harry Turtledove book. I like a lot of his ideas and concepts but his actual prose and writing kinda drives me nuts. Underground Airlines is well written. It's more like a detective story that takes place in an alternate history than an actual alternate history book.

It seemed a bit stereotypical as far as Confederate myths go. You know, Forrest is obviously a dick, Lee is an amazing genius who will go out of character to do all the heroic shit in the novel. In the end all the southerners give up slavery because, regardless of the economic implications, they don't like the idea the future is going to judge them for it. Plus there is that scene where Lee considers his sex life with his invalid wife, which was about as awkward as that sort of thing is going to get. That's like writing a scene about George Washington rubbing one off before crossing the Delaware.

College season happened again.

Oddly, I seem to have more free time now. Maybe because I can't start playing a game like Civ 5 because if I start I'll spend like 12 hours on it and not do my homework.

I'd consider writing for Brazil again, specifically oriented around a storyline with Brazilian volunteers in Africa fighting the Spanish, but I'd need to know what state that conflict is in. I read a bit of the IC, but it doesn't seem to be well delineated.

I'm also curious if that HOI4 Precipice mod ever was brought to a state of semi-completion.
