Chapter 1: The First Outing
Unusual, exciting, daring, risky. Within the world I am about to show you, folk from all walks of life have embarked upon adventure for all manner of reasons. Those who find success on their adventure are well rewarded for their endeavors. Fortune, glory, the opportunity to weave their names into the eternal tapestry of history. All of this and more can a successful adventurer hope to claim. Those who do not find success however... well I'm sure you can imagine what happened to them.
But I digress. Our story will focus on two such adventures. Your brother's adventure and your adventure. For as long as he had been able to move of his own accord, Pietro Cappellini had desired nothing more than to explore the world around him. It was a wanderlust that grew with each passing year. Then, shortly after he turned 15, things came to a head when he answered the call of a knight in need of a squire. An all consuming worry gripped the entire family when Pietro left with his new master. An all consuming worry that turned to full on panic when Pietro's letters stopped coming and the knight he was squired to stopped sending reports to the Doge of Acquascura. Your father brought his wealth and noble status to bear, hoping to entice and adventuring party into finding your lost brother. Alas, wealthy nobleman though he was, he lacked enough funds or influence to secure any adventurers capable of bringing the boy home. And so the House of Cappellini has languished in grief and misery ever since, despairing over the loss of their youngest child and their powerlessness to do any thing about it.
Until today...
You are Fiorenza Cappellini. And last night, something made you an offer. It came to you in your dreams, taking on the form of a well-crafted elven shortsword. It made promises of power and all that you desire. All it asked in return is that you gave it a name and used it to slay creatures of the undead. When asked if it could help you bring your brother home, the shortsword promised you that with its aid Pietro would be home just in time to celebrate your 20th birthday. It did not take much convincing to win you over after that.
You awoke the next morning to the sight of the blade from your dreams sitting on your bedside table. A moment later, you heard its voice reverberate in your head.
"Take me up and bear me hence to the city. The cemetery. Something there is restless. I can sense it. Long hath it been since last I bit into unliving flesh. Thou shalt satiate my desire."
What do you do?
