I figure it would be best to finally kick up an OOC/IC so we can discuss things and keep them all together.

So far we've settled on the idea of magic being a generic trait in modern times.

Each country would be native to certain magical traits and skills.

And there would be an unrest between the wealthy and poor, the magic and non-magic people.

And that some people are aiming to use genetic science to bank on the gene for the rich who either want it or don't.

Now we're trying to figure out a plot so we can see what characters would work best.

And the general age range we're thinking of is mid to late twenties I believe.

If that is still the case, school/education as a location is out. Workplace and every day situations may be the best means, coffee shop, office, laboratory. I think for the sake of having different characters (be it views of magic or the literate magic & non-magic) they should at least have a common interest so that they're not at each other's throats. Like long time friends or something. If we wanted something light, we could start off with a premise, a camping trip, a trip overseas. I still feel as though there would some dark unrest or rebellion boiling under the surface, it would depend whatever side our characters would like to take. I don't want to get into mega ultra drama or action but at the same time, conflic is needed, it just depends how we want to handle whatever it is.

We could probably use some kind of guerilla who plans to overthrow a magi led government, backed by an anti-magic political faction. It's a simple formula, really, but it provides a solid conflict for us to start with. I'd say a workplace... perhaps a university? As coworkers, of course.

An university provides a platform where: 1. both of us would be in a same rank or job position regardless of magic, the only thing judged would be merit; 2. we'd have a direct link of the conflict, given the students and the political expressions they develop (openly anti-magic groups, the magician students banding together, etc.); 3. we'd get plenty of excuses to have a friendship, trips for the faculty professors, meetings and a common interest on knowledge of some area; 4. we could open a discussion on morality, science and societal issues.

By the way, I love the title of this thread.

University for a workplace works fine I think, it would put both people on equal footing as far as education goes (assuming they both have a B.A or whatever they like) and it's a common meeting space, filled with activists, riots, clubs, all that fun college stuff that want to get attention or change happening. Oh yes, it seems you're on the same page as I am! That's great then.

We should probably settle on a country for us to start, I'd assume and like to believe that we'd travel elsewhere when the need arises.

And thanks, simple but swell.

I will be taking my final tomorrow (freeeedom) and then I'm having a friend over to help me get drunk off my ass so I may be indisposed for a day or two, as a heads up.

Be careful out there and have fun! I also had an exam yesterday, so I get how you feel, it wasn't a final though.

Country... country... well, a magician is in power so it can't be a country like Cuba or China... I actually wonder how some revolutions would have fared if magic existed, like the French Revolution. Oh, well, it's best we assume the world is as it is right now, not to delve too much into it. I guess... hmmm... maybe Finland? Its harsh winters would make for some interesting magic. Or Brazil... or... man, there's a lot, any you like?

Also, just read your sig, congratulations!

Ew god, I just got done with all that...(hence the celebrating and MIA status) but good luck! *waves banner* I'm still here, still interested. Don't worry. I only had one final (one class but come next semester that won't be the case...) and it was annoying enough, if you have multiple, well good luck staying alive~

Right-o. So let's continue setting things up after a loooong delay.

To not overcomplicate things, should we use a randomizer or something?

Shiz, yeah I almost forgot what we were doing but hurray for fantasy. Yes, I'm still on board. *nods*

*re-reads* Okay so we're settling on a location, well my top five picks would be:

London
Germany, city unspecified
China
Japan, probably someplace classy like Tokyo or Hokkaido, or someplace like Okinawa
I hate to suggest NYC because well, being American, I'm kind of "over" the USA in terms of excitement but I do have decent knowledge of Japan, China and London, having been to at least China, having studied Japanese for 5 years and well tv makes knowledge of London/UK pretty decent I think...

Aaaand I don't know much about many of those places.

Probably a bit about London and Germany, and well, what I know about Japan comes from anime and manga knowledge which is obviously inaccurate and exaggerated, China would be an interesting country to play as (Communist One-Party government that regulates everything. Who knows how they regulate magic) and I know as much as the average person about the USA and of course, New York. Most of it, comes out of TV.

Sorry, I really need to travel out of Colombia at some point. :/

Well Wiki is useful for such brain-gaps. As far as university settings go, I'd say it may be easier to deal with Japan or the USA, I'm not sure though. If you're set on China, there's no reason why we can't do some digging in terms of knowledge. Heh. We'll have to consider what elements originate from each location as well, depending on how in-depth we want to get, it may deal with political crap too, even just lightly.

Hm... I guess the USA should be fine, I certainly know more about the US than Japan in terms of, y'know, real knowledge. And, man, as for magic in the US? The plenty of urban legends, myths and folklore could be incorporated onto this or we could use, for cultural purposes, magic could be tied to Native American tales and elements. Although it would be a lot more ritualistic and less inmediate. (Example: Magic circles, chants and such, not: *ZAP, PEW, ZAP*)

Are you considering the practice of magic itself be different in the regions of the country, rather than just the elements themselves? I don't mind going in more depth, granted we can keep track of everything. If you're into that, we could probably map out the general areas of the US, be it north/south/east/west? I'm a sucker for chants, magic circles, probably alchemy (not just magic circles but with herbs and natural stuff) and possibly potion making or voodoo? For the south perhaps.

Words can't convey how awesome I think this is. I had thought more nation-wide, but region-specific magic sounds awesome. And vodoo... I agree with all of this.

we could say...and I'm just spit ballin here:

Region of the South specializes in Voodoo and Water based magic
Region of the North specializes in Potions and earth/rock based magic
Region of the West specializes in Alchemy and fire based magic
Region of the East specializes in Chants and Incantations and wind based magic

Sounds fine by me, although I don't know why the North specializes in potions. Now comes the part where we decide which region should we start in or play in. I personally would like the South or the West more than the other ones because of the mystique those areas hold in regards to folklore (Vodoo and myths of the smoking gun on the Wild West along with Native American traditions, count me in!) but I would be completely open about the other two areas, which I'm not entirely familiar with, being foreign and all.

West would be good in my book. That would mean, CA, WA, er...other areas. I'm crap with geography...but if you wanted, you could have a character coming from the South, ex: someone trying to change how they learn magic and use it? Wait, were we doing a University setting? That could work then, your character could come in and teach how Southerns (dif term needed?) do magic, while mine would be a purest with the West stuff, and they could probably have some interesting battle techniques, and I assume they'd go aboard soon...maybe the both of them uncover some political plot brewing in the underbelly of the school? Does that make sense? I'm in a good mood (rare for me) so I'm kind of buzzing everywhere, not totally focused as I should be haha.
