So, Spam knows films. I'm doing a group presentation on a film that depicts a historical event or period, which largely means talking about the film as a source. I'm looking for some suggestions, they don't have to be extremely accurate portrayals of the period, I'd prefer they be interesting, inventive or challenging really. I'm watching Dallas Buyers Club now, and I'm going to watch three more on Sunday and decide what to suggest to my group. Any ideas?

Here are some that I've watched, and I'm thinking of suggesting:
Django Unchained, Cabaret, Pocahontas, The Last King of Scotland.

Here are some I'm currently thinking of watching:
12 Years a Slave, Persepolis, The Agony and the Ecstasy, The Birth of Venus, Titus.

Here are some I can't do due to essay overlaps:
Gladiator, A Knight's Tale, Kingdom of Heaven, Made in Dagenham, The Battle of Algiers, The Battle of Britain, The Duchess, Amazing Grace, any of the bounty films.

A majority of movies out there could be classified as historical, if you gave me a time period or genre of film that you would prefer I might be able to help, but I am not about to just pull random movies out of my ass from the countless number you could be using.

American Civil War: Cold Mountain, Gettysburg

American West: Tombstone, Dances with Wolves

World War I: All Quiet on the Western Front, Warhorse, Joyeux Noël

World War II: Saving Private Ryan, The Longest Day, Tora, Tora, Tora!, Das Boot

Vietnam: Platoon, Full Metal Jacket

Ancient Rome: Spartacus, The Eagle, HBO's Rome (it's not a movie but an extended miniseries, it's too amazing to leave off), Ben-Hur, Warrior Queen (Boudicca)

Middle Ages: A Lion in Winter, Henry V, Black Death, Braveheart, The Seventh Seal, King Arthur

(I'll add more later but I can't say how historically accurate they all are)

I did specify interesting, inventive or challenging with reference to their portrayals of the period or event, combined with only getting to watch three ahead of time it was clear to others that I wanted one or two they thought particularly interesting. So there's no need to be an asshole about it.

Might watch this one, thankyou.

Sounds interesting, but I've got enough now and will probably have to watch it in my own time.

Unfortunately I can't do any series, otherwise I'd of settled on Blackadder a long time ago.

Anyway, I've got enough now, thanks again.

The White queen is a series but they also have a book written by a historian who majored in that time period. Might be of interest.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley

If you like depressing movies and you get twice the bang for your buck since it is about the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War. That and is beautifully well made and then makes you want to go just get drunk so to stop feeling the emotions afterwards, like a real Irish person! lol

That or Stalingrad (The 1993 Version), which is another depressing war movie about a group of German infantry during the Battle of Stalingrad and it is depressing, sad, and real on ways that are hard to describe.

Braveheart. Most historically accurate film I've ever seen.
