The Story
200 years ago the realms of men began a war that would engulf the entire of the old world. Kingdoms formed alliances with one another in a bid for expansion and power. As the power of men proved equal to the next some kingdoms turned to forbidden powers, bringing forth entire hordes of demon spawn to wreak havoc on their enemies. It proved effective for a time, until the spawn began to devour even those who summoned them. With forces dwindled by decades of warfare and land ravaged by raids from both armies and bandits the demons soon infested every kingdom in some form or another. As time went on, the natural orders formed to defend against such powers became ever more demanded by the many kingdoms. This lead to the formation of The Order. A Guild formed of both Templars and Warlocks. An uneasy alliance of holy warriors and sorcerers. It was not the most stable of alliances but they had little choice but to find common ground in their goals.
The Templars and Warlocks decided the best way to purge evil was to make it consume itself. Thus the contracts were formed between the Daemon clans and the Order to permit them a bounty of souls in return for the destruction of those that threatened the kingdoms of men. The clans agreed and sent a selection of their own kin to live among the humans and battle at their sides. The Daemons would take human form and bind themselves to a human or “contractor” to whom they would absorb the soul upon their death.
As Warlocks, Templars and Daemons came and went through the years the wars among men slowly came to an end as the darkness tore away at all those who dared to resist the power of the Order. Now only three kingdoms remain at war and the demon spawn has all but been eliminated. With the Orders presence becoming unnecessary they have lost much of their former power.
You will be a member in this Order within the temple walls. When your new duties are assigned you will be sent forth upon the world to rid it of the filth war has brought.
ENCHANTMENTS
Enchanted weapons are an extremely rare occurrence in the realms of both Daemon and Man, for they require those who forge them to sacrifice a soul to be reshaped with the metal. Some have tried many ways but the enchantments have always had one key law.
A soul must be willing to become one with the metal. In most cases a Master Warlock is the only one with the alchemical knowledge to forge such weapons and armour, or even jewellery, with a slither of their soul within them.
Some of the most powerful relics of the 1st era were forged by cultists who would perform mass sacrifice to enhance the items power with the combined energies of those who gave their lives. These very rare items have been slowly collected by the Order and sealed away within the Black Vault Archives. Only the highest in the Order have access to those vaults.
The Great War
In the early years, when the order itself was still only a Guild of holy warriors and scholars, the kingdoms of men began a campaign of which had never before been unleashed by men. Entire realms waged endless battle as their lords and lieges attempt to usurp the realms of their neighbours. For 40 years these battles raged, thousands perished, thousands more beaten, raped, enslaved or worse. The lines between right and wrong blurred until all were blind to it save for the Templars. Still they would not aid their fellow men in such Barbary, preferring to keep themselves neutral in all things. The Warlocks, before the union, had other ideals. With their magic battles became smouldering wastes or frozen graveyards that would span miles.
It was not until the hell spawn were summoned in their thousands that the Order was forced to intervene. The Warlocks, though only a few and under the command of their King, broke the oath taken to keep darkness at bay and used their magic to reforge the ancient realm gate in the Northern valleys. A once peaceful landscape covered in Elven ruins became the seat of demonic filth almost overnight. Needless to say the Warlocks were killed along with their master. The entire kingdom fell in days forcing the Templars to finally act out their honour-bound commandments to hunt such vermin to extinction. But they could not do this alone.
After a gruelling 8 more years of battle, man found its lands being stained with the darkness of Demonic infestation, and as hard as the Templars tried they were not enough. They needed allies, and they would seek them in the oldest of their tomes.
An alliance among Templar and Warlock was forged, and using their combined knowledge they were able to halt the Demonic advance for a time, but it was only a reprieve. With the realm gate open the Demonic filth continued to flood their world in ever increasing numbers. They would not give man rest and the Templars numbers began to diminish. Even after many kingdoms swore to grant them whatever they required to win this war they simply did not have the soldiers to push forward. This is when Hamon of GreyStone, the first of the Offered, approached the Council with his own ways of succeeding in battle.
Hamon had made a Contract with a Daemon of the dark realms, a man whom though seemingly human, was in fact a creature of power and destruction worthy of his title, Daemon kin. Though at first the council wished to punish the Warlock and execute his ward, the battles to come slowly changed their mind to the idea of Contracts between Daemon and Man. After much debate, the council eventually agreed to conditions for those who would be offered. These men and women would be from the Warlock sect, and must give their soul freely and without prejudice from others, for it was a great sacrifice to offer ones existence for the aid of such dark creatures. Templars would never submit to offering their souls, but they would safe guard the Order against any who would use this power for ill.
With the newfound strength of the Daemon kin at their side, the Order we know today was born. Templars, vanguard and sworn defenders of the balance. The Warlocks, great magicians and diplomats that researched all things mystical. And finally, the Daemon Kin, Sentinels who could do what must be done in times of great turmoil.
The Great Division
Elves were not always of two casts. High Elves who have all but faded into memory were once the same as Dark Elves. The change was only an occurrence of internal factions trying to both find a way to save what was left of their people.
Dark Elves
Where the High elves chose to fade away rather than pollute their bloodlines, Dark Elves saw otherwise. Entire families broke away, forming their own kingdom that focused purely on sustaining their kind. Though with no more than 1 or 200, it was inevitable that inbreeding would become a danger. A new hierarchy was formed among their kind in which producing a child of human blood was admissible for the more prestigious of households.
With what human servants they had, a breeding program was enforced in which Dark Elf males were to breed with human women, while the Elven women were only to breed with Elven men. The new royal family were the only ones who did not partake in such an act, instead they maintained the purity of their line the only way they could.
Children from pure lineage were given arrangements to breed with the royal daughters. After the first few generations, when impure bloodlines became more common, the royal family began compelling incestual marriages to ensure the blood remained pure. Though this has kept the royal line as Elven in blood as the first days of their division, the repercussions of these choices are evident. Many of the ruling class are not quite right, the current prince the most evident. His madness and bloody rage has tested the family to a point they fear he may need to be restrained until a wife of fitting breeding can be found.
High Elves
With their darker halves now committing to abandon the old laws and ideals, High elves have attempted to maintain themselves with the old ways. It has been a losing battle, with only a few dozen of their kind still in existence in the old citadel across the lost seas. Occasionally a ship will arrive with one of their kind aboard, having decided that they would rather marry into the blood of man then see their house line forgotten or suffer dying alone.
The Council is all that remains of their old court of nobles. Their royal line having faded away, the last of their ruling class, a young Elvish woman, having gone to the realms of man and never returning. Some say she found a man to which she fell in love with and had many children, the purists of their kin refusing to believe this and instead insisting she was killed in one of the many battles of old. It would take one of her possible descendants to prove which story is true.
For now their Citadel, a crumbling remnant of the past, is all they possess in the Lost Isles. Man does not dare set foot here, for the magical currents the Elves wield form storms to protect their home from dangers.
Daemon Culture
The society of the Daemon world is a strongly Feuedel in its design. Every Daemon belongs to a specific clan or Dominion, this clan exists to keep their particular bloodlines running strong. Females who do not seek battle are traded among other Daemon families to strengthen their bloodline and produce the next liniege of warriors to maintain their strength as a clan.
The realm of the Daemon is filled with many hundreds of clans, each forming a piece of a pyramid society where one clan serves another, which in turn serves the clan above that. Less powerful clans will become vassals to the more powerful ones until a single Clan holds sway at the top. The only problem with this scheme is those above can only trust that their servants will one day try and kill them for their power. It is a system of constant flux as clans rise and fall, alliances are forged and broken all in a bid for strength. It has kept the Daemon Kin at one another’s throats for many generations and yet kept their bloodlines strong and independent.
Smaller clans are normally absorbed into the stronger in times of great conflict, their men butchered and women forced to carry the children of their enemies. It is a dark realm of power, yet somehow it has held sway for so long.
Higher clans, although acting similar when a bloodline wishes to seek another families strength added to their own, will be more diplomatic. Challenges are made and offerings are given. The female must then, if she wishes to remain unclaimed, challenge her would-be master to a battle of death or submission. If she is victorious, she will execute the male, however if the male wins, he will take her as his own. At this point only the Circle, a collection of the most ancient of Daemon, may deny the male his prize. An act that has not happened for centuries, almost as long as the Circle has existed.
With the introduction of the Contracts many Daemon offer themselves to the council for binding to such agreements. Using their gained souls to increase their prowess and advance their ranks among otherwise equals of their kin.
The Daemon Clans have been oddly neutral to one another in recent years. The current reining clan swiftly destroying all others who would show signs of disrupting their seemingly perfect balance and rewarding those who aid them in this act. It has kept them as ruling clan for over 64 years now.
The First Contract
In the beginning, there was chaos. Man had only begun to scratch the surface of understanding and much of the magic learnt then was taught by the Elves in the dire times of their fall, in an effort to aid them in their demise. It was not to be, for their great empire collapsed inward. The boundaries of their once great kingdoms receding until they had all but vanished. Some say they made the mistakes we are doomed to repeat, others say otherwise. No matter.
In the early founding of the first kingdoms of men, warlocks were praised as those given the gifts of the gods. Able to bend the elements to their will and were richly rewarded for their work. In this time, the 1st era, women were forbidden to learn such powers. They were seen as lower, less pure then man. But one of them we know to have defied these laws.
Though her name is forgotten, the time of her discovery is not. For it was on the very day when the world threatened to swallow all of man in floods and fire, when no other Warlocks were able to hold back the tide, she emerged to sooth the earth. Yet man was no grateful. On her completion of silencing the world, exhausted and weak, her friends turned on her. She was beaten and raped, left in the forests she had saved to die alone. But she would not die…
It is unknown if she knew of the circle all along, or if they came to her hearing her pleas for help, but listen they did. She offered her soul, believed the strongest essence of its age, in return for a warrior able to purge the kingdom she had saved from the lands. Needless to say the Circle agreed, dividing her soul between themselves and placing a warrior in her charge that could consume all through flame and death.
The Kingdom of her people fell one by one, for they were nothing to the Daemon of the Circles charge. Those that beat her cried for mercy, those that had raped her begged forgiveness. But her heart was already cold, unmoved to their tears. They were butchered in their thousands. No sword could harm her charge, the first Daemon of man.
