The convenience of the first aid kit bothered Zaino more than the amount of people that had now surrounded him. He could understand the water, but if there was a town nearby, why would it have been necessary to bring rations along? Under normal circumstances, he could've been called out for being too paranoid, but to him it was all but justified. Everything about these people seemed off, and even though he recognized Helena, he wasn't sure if he could trust her either. After everything he'd been through, how was it even remotely possible for him to do so? Even if these people really were survivors, the chance of them turning traitor was more than likely to occur. Again, he couldn't take his chances, throwing the first aid kit back at the cavalier and spitting in the face of his apology.

"You can keep your knight in shining armor games to yourself."

Zaino wiped the sweat from his grimy blood-stained face, shoving past the horse. It was then that his body began to succumb to the long days of fatigue and an array of other sickly conditions, having not been able to take more than ten steps before falling to his knees and nearly keeling over. His sword, acting as a temporary leverage, quickly fell to the side as the rest of his body that was still upright hit the ground headfirst. As much as he desperately tried to pull himself back up, he no longer possessed the energy to do so. His head inched to his face to view the right side of his lower abdomen, where like in many other places around his body, an open wound presented itself. Poison... the coward's weapon.

Fuck... I pushed myself too far. I can't move...
And with that, unconsciousness swept over Zaino.
"Oi," Xanxus snapped his fingers twice in front of Lantus' face, wondering if the old man had entered one of those temporary hibernation periods that elderly folk were known for. He shrugged, folding his arms as he waited for Lantus to break his trance. Now's not really the time for this.

As Xanxus apologized to him, Lantus simply nodded and waved a hand, accepting the apology. Xanxus's attitude didn't bother him much, as he'd dealt with far worse before. Compared to his now-deceased mother-in-law, gods damn that harpy to the deepest pits of the abyss, a bit of cockiness wasn't much to get worked up about.

"Think nothing of it, General Xanxus. As long as you do your job well and I do the same, we'll get along fine."

While it was annoying that Xanxus refused to use his own men, Lantus couldn't exactly complain, seeing as he had no intention of recalling any of his own bannermen in the first place. After all, there was no point in running his men ragged chasing after what remained of the Shepards if Darrian planned on inciting war with Plegia. Lantus's own knights were among the most well-trained and equipped in Ylisse, and he was certain that they were a more than a match against Xanxus's personal unit, especially if Lantus was leading them himself. Fielding an elite force like that just to chase down a few ragged survivors was simply a waste of resources.

As Xanxus began discussing their troop choices, Lantus took a moment to consider his words before nodding.

"Agreed. We'll field a force of fliers and mounted infantry." The old general said before turning to leave. "Considering your dislike of common soldiers, I trust you won't mind if I gather the men myself. Send for me if you need something." Lantus left for the barracks, his two knights trailing behind him.

Talbot coughed lightly, covering said cough with his fist and squeezing his eyes shut. His throat was so dryโ€ฆ he could drink his own piss. Sure that would be disgustingโ€ฆ but he would do anything to survive. But thankfully, the fight wasnโ€™t going to happen. There would not be any spilling of blood or screams of pain. No dead bodies hitting the floor. He sighed, but the sigh was short-lived as the cavalier tossed them a canteen sloshing with water and rations. Of course, that glutton Silas got to it before he could. When he was handed the canister and then the rations.
The very famished and parched sorcerer licked his lips and downed the rest of the water. When his throat was wet once more, he shoved down some rations, sating his roaring belly. Oh Gods above, his prayers had been answered!
โ€Weโ€™resh Shepherdsh alโ€™ight.โ€ he mumbled around a mouthful of bread and meats. โ€The bestsh Shepherdsh. Cause, yโ€™know, we left camp. And we ran to shave this woman!โ€ he finished off his mouthful and blushed a bit. He probably sounded ridiculous.
All of a sudden a woman came, and he watched as the red haired woman groveled at her feet. Arching an eyebrow and glancing at Silas, he handed him the rest of the rations. That was strangeโ€ฆ โ€Well, it seems like weโ€™re all Shepherds. Funny that we found each other now.โ€ he jumped when the man began to cough, and glanced at Silas. โ€We didnโ€™t choose to live in the desert. We couldnโ€™t go to Valm and we couldnโ€™t go to Ylisse.โ€ he told him. โ€Maybe if you stop opening your mouth so wide, not as much sand would go in.โ€
Ambra looked back at Zaino and frowned when he tossed back the first aid kid at the poor knight. Well, that was rudeโ€ฆ The man was being nice to the other Shepherd. Her pale lips curled into a frown, and her reddish brow furrowed. Now, Ambra was sweet and kind, but neither was she blind. She went to the first aid kit and picked it up, dusting it off and handing it to the cavalier. But when she looked behind the pretty horse he had, she saw Zaino stagger to the floor.
โ€Oh no!โ€
She ran up to the man, eyes flitting over the multiple wounds that ripped his clothes apart. They were all matted, gaping, and red. But the one on his abdomen caught her attention. Swollen, red at the edges, and grayish skin surrounding it. Poison. This was a slow poison, as if it was fast, he would be dead in a few minutes. Her hand moved to her satchel and pulled out a few parchment wrapped herbs, and opened it. The herb, a lance shaped leaf, had been cleanly stored in her bag.
Snakeweed, it was called. And it did what it sounded like it did. It expelled poison from the body. She took the leaf and placed it into her mouth, chewing rapidly as she mashed it to a pulp with her teeth. In a few moments, she spat it into her hand and grimaced at the taste. With that, she placed it on the wound and rubbed it into the gash. The poultice would clean out the blood. And, just in case, she pulled out a tiny, metallic flask.
Well, she was a walking medical office, now wasnโ€™t she? The juice of snakeweed would dispel the poison. Double the dose, double the certainty, she always said.
Tipping his head back, she poked her finger into his mouth and pried it open. She poured some of the juice into his mouth and massaged his throat to ease it down. There. Sighing, she sat back and looked at the wound. It was becoming less and less gray and the redness was disappearing. Perfect.

Helena's eyes widened in realization when the swordsman called out her name. Past the battle wounds and torn up clothing, she recognized the man as Zaino. She had never met him before but he was renowned in Regna Ferox as being one of the few apprentices of the legendary Lon'qu. However, before she could even respond Helena was almost toppled over by a red flash. She looked down to see the archer girl wrap her arms around her legs, as if she was revering her. Helena immediately felt a blush coming on. Although she was used to attention, she never received this type of attention back home. And she was sure that she had never met this girl before.

"Um, could you-" Helena was cut off by the girl's babbling about barracks. Wait... was she at Ylisse during the massacre? Before she could ask the girl she now knew as Ambra, the red-head turned to the cavalier and announced that Zaino was also a Shepherd. This was no surprise to Helena but she still felt lucky to have found two Shep-

โ€œH-hey, weโ€™re Shepherds too!

Helena spun around, her eyes wide in shock. They were Shepherds as well?! The gods must have been smiling upon her today! She wanted to express her joy in finding some Shepherds so soon when a thump behind her caught her attention. She turned back to see Zaino now lying on the ground. Relief was washed away but an overwhelming sense of duty. Instead of running to his side like Ambra had, Helena turned to the remaining three men. "Where is the nearest camp or town? We need to get him under some decent shade and a proper healer." The blond faced Ambra and Zaino again and saw Ambra already providing some kind of first aid with her herbs. "Ambra, finish whatever needs to be done now. We have to saddle him up." She then looked to Phillip. "Can your horse carry another body? It would be better for him to ride than us carry him. From the looks of it, we're all about dehydrated."

Helena had taken charge of this motley crew in an instant, a respectable and noteworthy characteristic, Phill decided to respected her authority.
Andew huffed with strength and stood tall when Helene asked her question. "Carry another body? Andrew can carry this guy, the two dehydrated guys over there me and the girl if there was enough room!" he Proudly exclaimed next to Andrew, then getting serious he suggested
"Lets get him, Ambra and the mage on Andrew, I'll carry the archer if the need arises." pausing to look at Helena "We look like the only ones fit to walk anyway" he smirked with a friendly smile. Phill had heard only rumors of the famous Helena, the warrior lord of Regna Ferox, he had to see her in action, even more so in a friendly spar, he hoped.
"Anyway, the town is about a 3 hour run from here in that direction, behind that hill, we have only some basic healers " changing his expression to a slightly annoyed one "and I would think this grouch would find more comfort in a Shepherd camp" turning towards Talbot with a friendly face he asked "Hey mage, you mentioned something about a camp, how far away is it and what kind of help could they provide?"
Even though Phill's first action should have been to aprehend them and take them to town as a soldier, these people had suffered enough to add more to their plate, Helping them was his first priority as a cavalier.

A group of soldiers came up to the General Xanxus followed by a man with an iron sword on his belt with his hands tied behind his back. "Sir this man is convicted of being a vigilante. He murdered three bandits who were robbing an inn and forced another to back down." the soldier said as he forced the man forward. "He tried to get away shortly afterward but we caught him. He wasn't resistant per say but it was clear he is bitter about being brought here sir." the soldier said as the man looked at the general with his cold dead eyes. "He refuses to give us a name general-" the soldier continued but was shut clean up when the man glared at him and gave off a seriously irritated aura. "Hello General my given name is Carn and I served with the Silver Hawk Company until recently. Our leader was killed and I simply am off to Plegia to settle some old scores before I go and die in some hole somewhere. Before you ask I do not regret killing those men and I would do so again. Scum and villains who pick on those for fun are no friends to me or the public at large. If my sentence is death I ask that it be quick. But I did not do it out of self-righteous glory I did it because I wanted to do it. Now may I ask that I had my side told that you decide my fate. Carn told Xanxus plainly.

But I did not do it out of self-righteous glory I did it because I wanted to do it. Now may I ask that I had my side told that you decide my fate." Carn told Xanxus plainly.

"Let's try to aim for a departure time before the noon arrives." Xanxus called as he saw Lantus off. The regular military... a ragtag group for eliminating ragtag dogs. It's almost a match made in heaven.

Xanxus himself had not been particularly interested in attaining his position of power, but rather, he preferred the sense and authority of control that came with the privilege. To some extent, the uniformity of the military was a factor that he did not enjoy; mindless pawns to do the bidding of their 'leaders' were what the term military meant to him. But for his men, he had built them up differently.

Xanxus, though possessing authority equivalent to that of a General in the Ylissean Army, viewed the latter as a complete embarrassment. He commanded his own detachment force that consisted of a blend between ex-mercenaries from his old association and the hand-picked top elite of the regular military, both combining to tally a total force of sixty. This force, unofficially labeled as the Ylissean Raiders, was second to none in ferocity and combat ability, full of ethnic and background diversity. Some were orphans at birth seeking a family. Some were stray nobles seeking purpose.

Highly-disciplined and close-knit, Xanxus had originally gathered one-hundred people from both groups and left them in a hostile and hazardous environment surrounded by various bandit and rival mercenary groups paid by Xanxus through his many connections to attack them regularly, leaving them on their own for two and a half weeks with his occasional check-ups. By thrusting them into a desperate situation that wasn't just a simple military simulation, this weeded out any potential friction between the two groups. The mercenaries taught the militants their ingenious methods of braving the deadliness of nature that the soldiers' military training lacked, and the militants taught the mercenaries their battle tactics and weapon quirks to better their advantages against their enemies. In the end, only sixty from the initial one hundred remained, the other forty either outright deserting or succumbing to nature or their assailants.

There was much controversy behind such an unconventional and 'indecent' way of breeding soldiers, but the result was unlike producing any average army; Xanxus, with these sixty men and women who were now the Ylissean military's true pride, simply spat and laughed in the faces of those imbeciles.

And almost as if on cue, Xanxus was approached by one of them.

"Sir, this man is convicted of being a vigilante." The word vigilante was the sole thought that resonated in his mind, bringing an expression of disgust on his face. This is going to be great.

"He murdered three bandits who were robbing an inn and forced another to back down." The grunt paused as he pushed the scoundrel forward. Always the one who tries to play the hero. These kids really need to stay at home. "He tried to get away shortly after, but we caught him. He wasn't resistant per say but it was clear he is bitter about being brought here, sir."

Can my sword pierce his flesh already, Darrian? Is that a possibility?

"He refuses to give us a name, General--"

The soldier would've been able to continue, until the scoundrel interrupted him with a look that revealed how hard he was trying to look menacing to appease Xanxus. "Hello General, my given name is Carn, and I served with the Silver Hawk Company until recently. Our leader was killed, and I simply am off to Plegia to settle some old scores before I go and die in some hole somewhere."

It's trying too hard to sound formal. "At least you're honest." Xanxus directed towards his last statement about dying in a hole.

"Before you ask, I do not regret killing those men, and I would do so again. Scum and villains who pick on those for fun are no friends to me or the public at large."

Typical of a vigilante. And from the looks of it, it's also a swordsman... What a drag. "Yeah?"

"If my sentence is death, I ask that it be quick. But I did not do it out of self-righteous glory; I did it because I wanted to do it. Now, may I ask that I had my side told that you decide my fate?"

Xanxus sighed out of annoyance, shaking his head as he placed a hand atop of it. "What the hell are you on about? Are you seriously that inclined on dying? What are you, one of those mongrels who call themselves valiant and heroic swordsmen? People who attempt to don such a false identity and live a lie make me sick."

"And even if I were to punish you with death, your existence isn't privileged enough to be ended by my inexpensive blade," Xanxus continued to derail the man, who had irritated him alone by being in front of him. "What do you want me to tell you? To hurl yourself off of a bridge? Have some dignity, and be a real man."
A dream of a time when things were simple.

"Mam, whure'sh Xanxhus? Tomorrow'sh ma birthdhey!"

"He'll turn up, Zaino." His mother reassured as she, with a finger in his mouth, slowly opened it and carefully fed him a dark liquid from a spoon. She rubbed the side of his throat to help him digest the medicine as he coughed, feeling his forehead. She reached for a wet towel and laid it there, sighing as she smiled warmly and placed a hand on his shoulder. "He's growing into a man, just like Daddy."

The six year old frowned to his mother, reverting his empty look to the wall at his opposite side. "But isn't Daddy dead? Does that mean Xanxus is gonna die?"

"Don't say that, Zaino." His mother frowned at her son's analogy. "Daddy was a great man, you'll come to see it soon. You and Xanxus are going to be good people, just like him."

"But Xanxus always beats me in everything! And he's never home anymore!" Zaino whined.

"He's just busy, honey. Men are always busy."

"All he talks about is girls..." Zaino sighed, followed by a sneeze. "Where do babies even come from?"

Zaino's mother traced her hand against his cheek in a motherly caress, giggling. "I'll tell you after a few more birthdays. How about you get some rest? That cold isn't going to go away without sleep, and you wouldn't want to miss your seventh birthday."

"Fineee." Zaino, seemingly disappointed, said goodnight to his mother as she lifted the towel briefly to kiss his forehead and left his room with the lamp. He brought both of his hands to the back of his head and stared at the ceiling, thinking. Xanxus... I'm going to beat you in swords! Just you wait!

With a giddy and toothy grin at the thought, Zaino yawned as he shut his eyes and let the darkness of his room send him to the world of dreams.

Ambra glanced up at the others when Helena said her name. Zaino already had the snakeweed in his system, and by now it should be doing a good job at cleaning out his system. Her blue eyes flicked over to Zaino, and then back down at the wound. Now it was simply a gaping gash, not having any of the discoloration it had once before. Poison, dispelled. Yes. She got back to her feet and made a little flourish in her happiness. Of course, she had been a skilled healerโ€ฆ so who was doubting her? The red haired woman laughed as a spontaneous rush of pride washed over her.
โ€Thereโ€™s no need for more help.โ€ Ambraโ€™s proud voice was shivering slightly as she got up and looked at Phillip. โ€What I just gave a herb called snakeweed to thisโ€ฆ Shepherd. Itโ€™s meant to clean out poison from his body. Heโ€™ll be passed out butโ€ฆ he wonโ€™t die.โ€
She coughed into her hand and watched the horse. The woman liked animals, and this horse was bigger and sturdier than the others that she had seen. No wonder why he had said that the horse could carry most of them. His cute legs were rippling with muscle.
Pain shot through her back and she whimpered loudly as she ran her hand over her lower back. Her eyes squeezed shut and she ground her teeth. That fall from the tree was not good. At least she could walk and feel pain. She heard that you were in for bad news if you couldnโ€™t feel anything. โ€Heโ€™s a bit hostile, yes, but heโ€™s a person. He needs to be treated like one. Even if he did try to kill me twice...โ€
Ambra walked to the other side of the horse and tried to get on Andrewโ€™s back. But every time she tried to jump on, pain split through her back and made it very difficult to move. Owwโ€ฆ
Talbot yawned when people continued to ignore him. Welp, that was it, then. That blond woman looked back at them, face lighting up with joy. Or, it seemed like joy. His brow quirked again and then he looked at the knight. He seemed to have been very used to living in the desert. Talbot was making a lot of assumptions. โ€Oh, yes, carry the archer. Iโ€™m sure heโ€™ll love to be carried by a big, strong man such as yourself.โ€ he smirked at Silas and walked to Ambra. โ€Oopsy daisy.โ€ he took her by the waist, making the woman scream loudly. Talbot winced as he put her on the back of the steed. โ€The hell was that about? You blew out my ear.โ€
The mage sighed and turned to Zaino, who was still on the floor. He rubbed his eyes, which were once again irritated by the sand. Talbot hauled the man to the noble steed and- with all his strength โ€“swung him over the back of Andrew. He almost dropped him, but his hands gripped at his clothes and he steadied him. Ambra was at the back, and he was lying over the front. โ€Hold on to him. Heโ€™ll yowl louder than a wildcat if you let him fall.โ€
He chuckled as Ambra grabbed onto the unconscious man as if her life depended on it. He brushed some of his sopping hair from his face and pulled off his drooped hat. โ€Our camp is the rest of the way up the mountain.โ€ Talbot told him. โ€Thereโ€™s not much shade, but thereโ€™s a lot of other Shepherds there.โ€
Talbot sighed. Maybe that was a bad thing? There had been three fights in the past two days. The camp was overcrowded, and the heat was burning holes into their heads. Game was running low. They would have to leave camp in less than a week to relocate to somewhere that made more food and shade and all of that good stuff.

Carn almost laughed at the notion of HIM of all people being heroic. "Heroic? Hardly I kill heroes for a decent place to sleep and a half decent bowl of soup. Only fools beg for the salvation of humanity. I just like to help out people who can't defend themselves...occasionally...As for my life, which I'm sure is poor compared to one such as yourself, I've got only one thing to live for at the moment and that is the murder of a group of fellow humans living inside of Plegia. As for fake names...I never used them despite my occupation I told the men I've killed by droves in Valm and Ferox who was responsible for killing them before I slew them. I am no coward why should I fear who knows my name? Carn said to the general honestly with a half grin. He looked at the man's face and grinned hoping that his assumption was right, "I see by that look in your eye that you're preparing for something. Perhaps I can be of service to you. If it helps my offer anymore I come from Regna Ferox and was prided for my sword technique there. But I'm sure a mighty general like you could easily match mine but that's besides the point. Carn continued on with what looked sincerity but was really disgust at his own words. So you ask what I want? I suppose a bag full of gold and a place to sleep isn't bad. "Surely a man of your stature and grace shouldn't need to dirty his own blade in combat if need be when a sell sword of my caliber such as I exists." Carn followed up and he had no shame about those words. He'd said them to many a Valmese noble before they hired him to murder children and scum in their sleep. "I'd also like to add one last thing: An apology. I expected you to be like the typical Ylissian Noble. Something like the late hero king Marth if you need a specific example though I'm sure you're more than a match for one such as him. So how about it...You asked what I wanted and be a real man. What better way to answer both than to have me offer my help to you.

Haste fully walking towards the Andrew, Phill grabbed the Mages head and turned it towards his, giving out a fiery aura and a furious expression "IS THAT HOW YOU TREAT A WOUNDED COMRADE, HUH?! HAVE SOME RESPECT!! HE MAY BE AN ASSHOLE BUT HES A PART OF YOUR TEAM DAM IT!! I WAS RIGHT NEXT TO YOU AND YOU FREAKING โ€œSWUNGโ€ HIM BY YOURSELF ON ANDREW, YOU ALMOST DROPED HIM" Phill burst out, grabbing Zaino and positioning him in a sitting position and tying him to Talbot with some rope to help keep him from falling off of Andrew "most of his injuries are on his torso, the horses movements would make them even worse if he were lying down" Phill told Talbot still annoyed "now treat your comrade with respect, and don't let him fall of this horse, you're lucky I still let you ride on Andrew, are we clear"
Even Andrew gave Talbot a pissed off look.

Nothing annoyed Phill more than a man who treated comrades like that, even more so if they half-assed it, it told him a lot of a man's character, something like that could mean life or death in a battle, were you have to leave your life in the hands of your companions.
Still pissed off he waited for Helenas decision as to where to go, now Phill definitely couldn't leave this band to their own devises, even if it meant punishment from his higher ups.

Helena waited till Phillip was finished with his tirade before she walked up to his horse. He had every right to be angry but getting angry only took up more energy. And under this unforgiving heat, using up too much energy would lead straight to death. "Although I agree that this was not the right way to place Zaino on your horse, it might be our only option." She stated calmly, "He has a higher chance of falling over if he is upright." Hopefully, this would ensure that neither party would continue this argument. They were both right, in a way. Helena turned her attention back to the unconscious Zaino and leaned forward. His breathing was slow and haggard, but it was breathing nonetheless.

Taking that moment to consider their options, Helena stepped back into the middle of the group. "Let's head for the camp first. I want to see the other Shepherds. However, there is the chance that we might have to travel for this town so let's not get too comfortable. If everyone is ready, we should get moving." Helena looked at the mage. "Will you be riding, Sir...?" She trailed off, hoping he would introduce himself. Only he and his archer friend were yet to be nameless to her and she would rather they didn't stay that way for long.

"H-hey!" Talbot flailed a bit as he was tied to Zaino. He pulled his face as far away from the creep as possible, growling under his breath. Stupid knight... he was pretty sure if this demon would wake up, his face would be torn off. Silas was probably chuckling, and he flushed at that. The thought of being laughed at made him edgy and uncomfortable. His brown eyes flicked over the scenery, over the large expanse of sand and rock. A frown crossed his cracked lips. Yes, they would have to move to a town. This place was about to give someone a fucking stroke. And, knowing his luck, it was going to be him. Imagine, a heat stroke passing over a mage!
Suddenly, the woman that was named Helena spoke up. He smirked, pulling off his hat and giving her a flourish. "M'name's Talbot. Pleased to meat... I mean... meet you. The lad that's behind me is Silas. Don't mind him, he's a little slow." great, his hunger was getting in his way again. But the joke made him feel a bit better. He rolled his eyes and heaved a sigh. "Yes, I'm riding. I guess I have no choice. This man's tied to me. I'm like a lamb tied to a sleeping tiger." he joked, coughing a bit. The wind was picking up. This put him on edge, He hoped that there wouldn't be a sandstorm while they were riding.
Talbot glanced back at Helena from staring into the distance. "This... man seems to know you. Your name is... Helena, eh? Where have I heard that name before?" he held on to his hat as the wind howled across the desert. Please, don't let it be a sandstorm... he begged. He would have to go and take all of the sand out from between his fragile tome pages...

Silas was, indeed, chuckling. Munching on the remains of the rations heโ€™d had handed back to him, he let out a content sigh. โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™m good to walk, thanks. If Iโ€™m too tired, Iโ€™ll say so.โ€ He mentioned with an upbeat tone. Every step was much lighter now, in the presence of more people. Even though one of them had a righteous stick up their arse, although that just meant heโ€™s very passionate about camaraderie. As the band of misfits began their little trek, however, a snarky comment was thrown about from Talbot. With a malignant glare, he stared down his bound friend, an accusative finger pointed at him. โ€œIโ€™m slow, am I?โ€ Silas growled, a crooked grin spread on his face. โ€œIf you keep this up, nobodyโ€™s going to want to untie you from our scene-maker here.โ€ Doing his utmost to keep a serious face going, however, Silasโ€™ grin cracked into a sincere smile as he let out a small chuckle. โ€œBah, I canโ€™t keep up a farce like that. I sure hope I scared you for a moment, though, hah!โ€

With a change in focus, Silas looked over to Ambra, who he presumed was the one theyโ€™d come to help in the first place. With the eyes of a practiced kleptomaniac, he eyed her well-crafted bow. โ€œโ€ฆWoah. Thatโ€™s a pretty bow you have there, Ms.Ambra. I take it you do archery, then?โ€ He inquired rhetorically.

Ambra calmly continued to sit on the horse, her eyes looking up at the sky. It was so blue. She just loved nature, how the clouds rolled across the cerulean sky and how the trees danced in the wind. Even though it was a dry breeze, they still swayed and rocked back and forth. The leaves that were simply husks, dry, dead. It was sad, but maybe if rain fell to the parched earth, they would be alive again. She imagined the thirsty land drinking the water, the leaves becoming green again. But she knew that the rain would to constantly fall to earth, enough to keep the soil wet. But she knew that Plegiaโ€™s brutal deserts would not do such a thing. They were as brutal as the ruffians that constantly invaded Ylisse. No remorse, no mercy.
โ€Hmm?โ€ Ambra said, a bit tired as she looked over her shoulder. โ€Yes, Iโ€™m an archer. When I began to train the art of fighting, my master Scipio handed me this bow and quiver. He said that an archer was just as important as any lord, warrior, or mage.โ€ she smiled softly. โ€I fell in love with archery soon after. I could hit a birdโ€™s nest at the top most branch of a large tree.โ€
Ambra glanced over Silas then, her eyes flitting over to his bow. โ€Youโ€™re an archer too!โ€ she piped, a smile on her face as she looked at his face. โ€I never had an archer buddy. Not sinceโ€ฆโ€ she drifted off. She never did find out what happened to Scipio. She assumed he was deadโ€ฆ she hadnโ€™t heard from him in a very long time. Why couldnโ€™t she had stayed to defend him? She rubbed her back, wincing in pain. โ€I hope this pain goes away soon.โ€

Haven't I woken up yet? I'm still dreaming, but this...

A shadow dipped close; she felt its breath on her ear. She blinked and the shadow became flesh; a dark-eyed bandit.

It's not Xanxus... this man is different. He looks younger, and has an entirely different atmosphere surrounding him... almost like unpredictability?

โ€œDid you know, Lady Knight, that even criminals have their standards?โ€

She was still, even as he slipped her hand into his, as easily as drawing on a glove. She felt herself being moved to a strange and languorous rhythm (might she call it a dance?), like an infant ship being gently rocked by a deep-lit sea.

โ€œI have one policy that I hold for myself,โ€ he continued, gaze flitting over the swimming lights, over the sentries posted throughout the room (useless), over the myriad of couples that swayed obliviously, merrily, towards their doom. This place would soon collapse.

โ€œI think youโ€™ll agree that it is a reasonable one.โ€ His tone was amiable, as though he was certain she would have no qualms with anything he might say. A sudden swelling of noise bloomed as the orchestra began to play; he leaned closer to speak. โ€œI donโ€™t allow anyone to steal from me.โ€

Where am I? What's going on? Who are these people?

A pause. Her eyes were sharp like crystal even in the dim light.

โ€œUnless,โ€ he inclined his head closer just because he could, โ€œI am reimbursed twofold.โ€

She had not spoken a word, but he could tell she was listening from the tautness that wrought her slender back. A gentle jostle from an unwitting passerby closed the distance between them; a ghost of a smile hovered on his lips. He spoke into her ear.

โ€œI hope youโ€™re ready to pay me back?โ€

Wake up...

This kid was just asking for death.

"First, allow me to draw the line," Xanxus followed through, tapping the hilt of the iron sword resting at his left side. "There is no 'match' between me and you. You could live three more lifetimes, and you would never understand nor reach my stage when I was a teenager. Let's make that clear, shall we?"

If the man thought that Xanxus was being arrogant, than he was sorely incorrect in his assumption; he was only speaking both the truth, and wisdom that this Carn fellow should take to heart. Even if it seemed like he was, he would not mind setting it in stone with another victory under his belt. At this time of day, it wouldn't have been too bad to have a warm-up with killing yet another suicidal imbecile. This man was all but disgusting to Xanxus just by the way he spoke. "A sell sword of your caliber? A bag of gold? Stature and grace? You're a funny kid."

Why should you fear who knows your name? Because no one knows your name.

"I have a kid brother who also hails from Regna Ferox, and I'll admit that he's more worthy of being my personal blade cleaner than you are." Xanxus sighed, already bored of the conversation. The last remark that Carn, however, was perhaps the most boldest and daring thing that someone had ever requested to him; their help. "While your Hero King Marth rots away underneath the ground, I'll kindly reject your insult, seeing as I'm far from a noble. Now, excuse me. I have actual business to tend to."

And with that, Xanxus simply walked away.

The fool was clearly too self confident, stupid, or insane, to clearly know when a man was agreeing with him. He had insulted Marth and had pretty much belittled himself for the idiot and it was plain that he was the blind one. He wondered if the man would talk big with a sword in his gullet...regardless a simple stain on his pride was something he could live with after all Red Fist's captains had done much worse for their part. Carn looked at the guards and they were clearly annoyed at his comments but let him go saying it was for saving those inn keepers. Carn gathered his stuff together and left without another word if this pompous fool couldn't hire him. or was simply as blind as he looked, Carn was given a horse, an old fella but nothing he couldn't live with or feed out of his pocket, and decided to leave the city as his own plan: Go to Plegia and kill those bastards who had done him wrong. After that...maybe he'd reform the Hawks into Carn's Hawks or something along those line. At the moment all Carn wanted was to get himself clean of Ylisstol. The city was even more filthy than he expected. With that Carn and his new horse left the city intending on going to Plegia.

A pegasus soared over the Plegian desert, the blond woman on its back clutching her lance tightly. She scanned the horizon as she rode, tiredly searching for any sign of pursuit. Alicia had been fleeing from Ylisse's Pegasus Knights for days now, and fatigue was starting to take its toll on her. She had outflown her last pursuers to the point where they had apparently lost her trail, but that was when she had been relatively fresh. After riding hard for days on end, she didn't think she would last long if another group of riders discovered her.

Another hour passed, and Alicia saw a group of travelers on the ground mounted on horseback. From a distance, they didn't seem to be Ylissan soldiers, considering their lack of armor and coats of arms, which meant that she might be able to approach this group for aid. With the hope of at least finding out where the nearest town was, Alicia coaxed her pegasus to descend at a gradual pace, not wanting to alarm the riders on the ground.

The pegasus touched down within speaking distance of the group, and Alicia looked them over as she began to speak.

"Hail, travelers. Would you happen to know where the nearest town..." Alicia trailed off as she caught sight of a certain archer in the group. She'd know that shade of hair anywhere. "Wait...is that you, Ambra?" The Pegasus Knight asked incredulously.

Ambra was waiting for the horse to actually move. The heat was pounding down more and more atop her head, and she was afraid that she would get sunburn- again. She was a really pale woman, bound to become injured by the sun. The large globe would sear her skin much like fire would sear boar skin as it roasted. She sighed, removing her water pouch and screwing off the top. The water was already lukewarm when she felt it go down her throat, but she supposed that was to be expected. She sighed, wanting to get out of this damned heat and just wallow in a city. The buildings would provide some shade, at least more than the middle of the desert.
A shadow flitted over them, and a gust of dry wind. She perked, looking to the side and seeing a white Pegasus land on the floor with all of the grace it could muster. It was a fantastic beast, snow white in color with a glorious mane. A young woman rode it, and for some reason, she looked very familiar to the red haired archer. She narrowed her eyes as the woman spoke. Even her voice sounded very familiarโ€ฆ almost too familiar.
It was then that the woman looked over at her and paused before saying her name. Ambraโ€™s eyes grew wide, and she smiled. She finally knew who this woman was. โ€Ali?โ€ she used a pet name to address her, the smile growing wider and wider by the second. The two friends had met one day in the barracks due to her mount, who did not like Ambra that well.
โ€I thought they had gotten you too!โ€ she basically wailed. She was so excited and very relieved. Tears were coming to her eyes, but she blinked them away. โ€Thisโ€ฆ this manโ€ฆ heโ€™s going to take us to the nearest city. I have so much to tell you!โ€
