Feudal Lords

Nations rise and fall but history will always remain. In this world it is 1100, men in armour swing swords as they battle over the farms and workshops that their lords want so much, meanwhile men of the cloth incite rage and anger at those who dare disagree with the church. In the towns and villages people go about their daily lives, fresh food and tools are brought into the market where children play in the streets and on lookers throw fruit at men in the stocks. However it is not the lives in these petty kingdoms that should interest you. You rule a nation. Swathes of people call your lands home, looking to you for guidance in times of trouble and strife as you expand your borders to grow in size, wealth and stature. However you are not alone, other nations surround you vying for control of the same lands that you so desperately want. It is your job to decide who is friend and who is foe, deal with the politics of your own court, the international stage and the court of the church. Will you lead your nation into the history books and eternal glory, or will you be forgotten and swept into the annuls like so many before you.

Onto the RP itself, as you can tell this is an early medieval nation role play. This is not to say I want any history buffs appearing and explaining the details of every decision to do with armour, weapons or population, if something seems off please just leave it or PM any major complaints to gowia or Innovative Enigmas as this will not be perfectly historically accurate for simplicity and freedom to make decisions. There is a nation sheet below, please fill it out and PM it to either gowia or Innovative Enigmas for us to check it over and suggest changes, if they are needed, and give you your rolls before they are accepted. Once accepted please post them in the Nation Dump provided to confirm joining. In the way of traits it is simple, you start out with +2 points, you may take as many traits as you like however they must total 0 or higher to comply with rules, furthermore you may only take two +/-0 point trait. These traits will affect the rolls you receive for Army, Navy, GDP and Stability directly so choose wisely.

Right now some basic housekeeping rules before people start posting.
1: Basic guild rules, no god-modding etc.
2: Arguments are a no go in the OOC, please start a PM, which includes either gowia or Innovative Enigmas as mediators, to argue about decisions or actions taken.
3: GM decisions are FINAL, mistakes are made and stuff can be amended so suggestions are fine however snide comments or rude comments about the GMs and their actions will not be tolerated and you will be forced to leave.
4: Language and gore is fine but please do not swear just for the sake of swearing.[/center]

You can see below myself and Enigma's sheets as examples.

Question:s Is it okay if I have one city and a small population? And can I give names of the types of soldiers in my army (I won't give the number of soldiers, just the classifications). I don't mind getting the short end of the stick; sometimes being in a hard position can be fun.

By all means you can name your soldiers, but the amount of soldiers you have depends on your population. Concerning just being a small city gotta remember you will probably be pressed to fold into a larger nation wanting to take over. I don't mind though if you want to be a city-state.

A tip for others: I determined my population by estimating by nation's size (By comparing it with RL nations) and multiplying it with my population density, which is usually between 50-90 people/sq.mile (http://www222.pair.com/sjohn/blueroom/demog.htm). Might help others with getting their numbers right.

Vahir I love your signature.

I'm considering only having about 100,00 population to be honest. Maybe even a few hundred... like 900... and having about 100-200 warriors... not sure yet.

The Population I figured is roughly 1 million more people living in France at the current time. If your landlocked sure, but you have to get rid of one of your +0's. Max of two only.

Alright gentlemen, I'm still making a Christian burgundy-like duchy, trade hub, very rich and productive but which has the problem of being of a power comparable to the king of its host nation and somewhat rebellious. Obviously this means backstab & civil war at some point, but I think it makes for an interesting plot no?

Innovative proposed himself but I'm looking for a land based nation if possible to share my border with. Any interested?

Scared of Water i fine if you are land locked however it means you really have no hope of ever becoming anything at sea.

Still, travelers quickly learn that paying mercenaries for escort isn't optional as much as it is a need, anyone that doesn't know its way will land in an alley and be mugged and any unguarded warehouse is certain to see its content stolen as it as much it is the capital of legitimate business, it is the capital of illegal affairs, smuggling and so forth. People however learn to bribe the duke and his guards, otherwise 'Random inspections' may immobilize your goods for quite some times. All that matters to the duke is that the money of the foreigners keeps moving up to him.

_____________________________________

Social Dynamics:
-Citizens: To please the patricians, the duke as given many rights for the peasantry which are not bound to any nobles anymore for example, the constant lack of manpower in the industry of the duchy as also given them the choice of work and as such, have higher revenues to spend than others. Notably, most people in the cities tend to rent as land as become too expensive to afford.
-Patricians: Land owners who have the right to be part of the patrician council, a body that doesn't have much real power but which has the ear of the duke. Many employ mercenaries for protection as assassination have become quite frequent.
-Clergymen: With the population with so many coins, many of these find themselves in the church, as such the church almost likes the priests of Rosenkreuse as they hate them due to their tendency to sin and abuse their resources. The higher the position, the richer as patricians tend to constantly make 'Generous Donations' to be named as a charitable person or have their enemies receive a public accusation of being unchristian-like.
-Condottieri: Mercenary lords who control sizable amount of armed men, they are people not to anger as they and their men both bring good coins to spend as well as have a tendency to arson or ambush people they don't like.
-Noblemen: Depending on their business smarts, the nobility either became extremely rich based not on military might but stewardship or they have been left behind by the economy, selling their lands and be forced to become 'Knights' for the Duke, mainly an honorary position to keep nobles quiet.
-Duke & his retinue: The duke is easily the richest man of his duchy, gaining coins through taxes on one side, the bribes on another and the tariffs on the last, all of these numbers making most kings red of jealousy. The duke however doesn't put much importance of family and many of his cousins and uncles cursing his name for it, he however is considered an important patron of the arts and sciences, someone falling in his good favors often having access to nearly limitless wealth to achieve their projects.

Religion: Christian
Important Events or Holidays:
-Basic Christian
-Topsy Turvy (Summer Carnival, people may go around in disguise and trick their boss should they have been cruel during the year without legal consequence)
-Champion of Champions Tournament (Jousting and fighting competitions where birth sex, religion or nobility doesn't matter, massive price for the winners & visibly for recruitment in elite mercenary companies)
Stability: (This will be rolled for you.)

Military:
Army Strength: (This will be rolled for you.)
Navy Strength: (This will be rolled for you.)

___________________________

Industry: A clergyman once said 'If I had to describe Eden I'd describe Rosenkreuse' as indeed this place seems to have been blessed by god with fertile lands that can be cultivated for many months per year, its soil is rich with minerals and its location is at the crossroad of the world. All it took was the University of Jonesdam to attract and train the best minds of the world to make the duchy the treasury of Christianity. Lately with the annexation of Leuchtenberg who was the only thing contesting the monopolies of Rosenkreuse, the area as been saturated by craftsmen and specialists offering their services. The sheer demand for manpower as raised the life quality of the peasants to something much more superior to those of other countries.

Agriculturally, free market determines the balance of things, only the most expensive and profitable crops being risen, said crops often being owned by patricians involved in alcohol brewing, having distilled their techniques to a science each vineyard and brewery producing something unique.

Industrially the goods move freely through an elaborate system of canals and like the crops, workspace being dedicated to only what profits the most, competition being high, anything that can't live up to the unquestionable of something being from Rosenkreuse being superior automatically being swept aside for a better product to be made. Due to a rise in the price of wood, the furniture has made more place a few years back for metal instruments, especially armors and weapons to equip the mass of mercenaries present in Rosenkreuse.

As Rosenkreuse is the terminus for the mercenaries of the world to wait for new contracts, especially after Constanza was made a count and his armies being hired as needed by the Duke to cover what the city guard can't do (Victor diminishes upkeep and maintenance to a minimum when troops aren't needed, making the standing army a joke). Not only mercenaries however are willing to sell their skills, doctors, engineers, architects and others, formed in the University of Jonesdam, await to give the benefits of the most modern techniques available.

Main problem of this system however is the constent lack of people to keep this machine going and while this benefits the peasants heavily, the patricians are always ready to get more people to work for them, for a salary or in slavery.

Main Exports:
-Quality Armament & Armor
-Quality Wine & Liquor
-Specialists (Mercenaries, engineers, doctors & so forth)
Main Imports:
-Manpower
-Salt
-Horses & Livestock
GDP: (This will be rolled for you.)

I swear I can't figure out how to make my duchy more of an economical power house.

Also, how will mercenaries work? Obviously my army is based around the fact that it's composed of incompetent city guards that at most know how to deal with a riot but war is handled by hired professionals.

And I guess I'm joining you too. I didn't see any history section, should I add one?
